Dying

I was still trying to understand what was going on. If this was a dream, I wanted to wake up right away. My family lay in front of me, not moving at all with their pale bodies. Blood stained their clothes. Their eyes opened, showing the last horror they saw before they gone.

Two men lifted their bodies and threw them into the fire.

"No!" I screamed as loud as I could but they didn't stop.

I thought it was a dream. There was no way they would suddenly die in front of me. That couldn't be real.

Someone suddenly tugged at my hair, making me turn my head painfully. That man, the scary man with a scar on his face stood before me.

"You think you can run from me?"

"Why are you doing this to me?" I couldn't hold back my tears.

"You have seen what you should not have seen."

That was not fair. He killed all my family just because I witnessed a murder. I did nothing wrong. I never asked to see that. My family shouldn't take the blame.

He just grabbed my hair and I couldn't move anymore. I felt so weak and useless. Why was I that weak? I tried to let go of his hand, but my strength was not commensurate with his hand.

If only I was stronger, I might be able to protect my family.

"Let me go! Let me go!"

"Killing orphans is not a problem for me." He burst out laughing.

"Gerald!"

I froze when I heard that sound. Gray was still there, he was the only one left alive. A slight sense of relief crept into my heart. I still had Gray. He must be safe.

The scary man let me go. He headed towards Gray, picked him up, and threw him to the ground.

"Stop it! Don't hurt him!"

He lifted Gray once again and slammed him down. He took out his gun.

"No! You want to kill me, right? Just kill me! Kill me!"

Why did he have to kill my family? Why did he have to kill Gray? I was the one who should be dead.

"Please, let him go!" I cried, begged, and prostrated myself until my face was full of dirt.

"He did nothing. Please don't kill him!"

The scary man looked really happy to see me desperate. He laughed very loud.

"Look at them! They all die. What's the use of you leaving one child? Let them all die!"

He pointed at Rose's body which was being thrown into the fire. I clenched my fists, squeezing the ground together with my tears. Rose died and was burned. It still felt unreal. Rose shouldn't have died that easily. She was a fighter.

"Don't worry. I will make sure you die after I kill this kid."

He directed his gun to Gray again. I didn't have time to think. My body moved spontaneously. I ran to Gray as fast as I could and hugged him.

Bang!

The gunshot deafened my ears. I felt something hot cut my back.

"Gerald," Gray called me softly.

"You want to die?"

The scary man screamed. I didn't have much time. I picked up Gray and ran away.

Bang!

Bang!

He shot at me several times and the bullets hit my hand, my leg, and my back. I kept running. I was numb. My desire to save Gray was far greater than the pain.

I ran into town. It was still crowded at midnight and people looked at me in surprise. I ran towards the police car parked on the side of the road. I looked back and the people who chasing me stopped, even they were still watching me from a distance.

"Please help me. They want to kill me!"

Those police officers were confused to see me covered in blood. Gray still crying with a trembling body.

"Relax. We'll take you to the hospital first."

One of the officers took Gray from my arms, and at that moment my body lost all strength. I sat helplessly on street while the officers called for an ambulance.

At least Gray survived. I didn't know how long I could last with this wound. I shouldn't have died, I had to make sure Gray was completely safe.

The roar took me back to my senses. The ground suddenly shook and a light appeared before us. People were confused. The ball of light enlarged, getting bigger and bigger becoming a big flat light ball surrounded by electricity.

Even on the verge of death, I could still remember when I saw that kind of light in a sci-fi movie. Usually, it would be a portal in a time machine. But looking directly in front of my eyes, it felt unreal.

"What is that?" I heard one of the officers mutter.

People began to came closer while taking out their phones. They took photos and didn't care about me lying in front of the portal. If the portal explodes, of course, I would be the first to die.

The portal shook like something was cracking on that.

"Run!"

The people suddenly shouted.

They ran away, leaving me helpless on the road.

From the portal emerged green hands, then the feet and head of a horned creature. It looked like a monster.

I got my instinct to run but I couldn't do that. My body was too weak and I couldn't move.

"Gerald! Run! Gerald!"

Gray shouted. I could only stare at him weakly. He was already down from the officer's arms. His body suddenly lighted up, and so did the other people. I didn't know what happened but when I realized it, people started to fight that monster.

I lay staring at the sky. It was a lie if I said I wasn't afraid. There was a monster in front of me, how could I calm down?

I wanted to fight too like other people, but I couldn't do anything. How could people suddenly be so powerful? Why were they not afraid? What happened to them?

An ugly green face with two horns was looking at me. It was an orc, I saw it a lot in games.

That was the last thing I saw before its hand separated my head from my body.

[Congratulations!]
