In the dead of the night, when the clock was about to strike three, Ezra woke up with a start, feeling a searing pain in his right leg. As he parted his eyelids, in the dim glow of the night lamp he spotted something black and slimy squirming on his wooden door.

“What the hell!” Ezra sat up straight and tried to pull his leg free, but something pulled it back.

He quickly threw his quilt aside, and his eyes widened in horror as he discovered a writhing mass of tarry black tentacles wrapped around his leg like vines.

“Let go of me!” Ezra kicked the squirming tentacles with his free leg, but a second pair of tentacles grabbed his left leg as well, binding him in place.

The more Ezra struggled, the more the tentacles constricted. Soon, they cut off the blood flow to his thighs, and Ezra felt his legs going numb.

The squirming mass of slimy black tentacles covering the keyhole, spread all across the door, blocking Ezra’s only exit. It slowly spread to the surrounding walls, growing new

Aurelia had barged into Ramel’s room with the intention of accusing him of attacking Ezra and bringing him to justice. However, what she saw completely altered her perspective. Ramel was still confined to his bed and it didn’t seem like he could even attack a fly in his current state. “How did a damn maid manage to stab you?” Aurelia enquired, looking around the room. “You seriously expect me to believe you could not stop a simple commoner from attacking you?” “I...did not see it coming. She must have drugged me, sister,” Ramel whispered back, gritting his teeth to fight the pain. “Could…we maybe talk…after I get some treatment?” Aurelia did not want to involve any outsiders yet, so instead of calling for a physician, she yanked the knife out all by herself and helped Ramel drink a healing potion. It took a few seconds for the wound to heal, after which Ramel slowly sat up straight and threw his quilt aside. Touching the scar on his stomach, he grinned. “Good thing she didn’t use

Lord Sebastian still could not believe what his son had done. Capital punishment had been outlawed long ago, and this barbaric act of shooting a prisoner in the head was nothing short of brutal tyranny.“You took her life despite knowing she was at our mercy,” Lord Sebastian’s voice deepened as he spoke, and his eyes gleamed with suppressed rage. “Ramel Romanov! You have disgraced my name! It’s a crime to kill an unarmed woman.”“Lolita wasn’t innocent, father. She was a follower of the Lord of Decay. And she sealed her fate by betraying our family,” Ramel replied. “I do not regret my decision. In fact, I’d make the same choice a thousand times.”“So, you feel you can just take a life without any consequences?” Lord Sebastian reprimanded, raising his voice. His keen eyes seemed to peer into Ramel’s soul as he chastised him with his words. “We should have given her a fair trial. We are not barbarians! The Goddess does not support killing the unarmed.”“I think you have grown far too so

All these years he had endured all the mockery and ridicule without losing hope because he wanted to prove himself to his father and bring honor to his family. But now that Lord Sebastian had revealed he wasn’t his own son, it left Ezra disillusioned and aimless. “Who….am I really? Who are my real parents? Why did they abandon me?” The questions came pouring as Ezra struggled to hold back his emotions. The storm raging inside his heart threatened to wreak havoc on the man he had called ‘father’.“You are Ezra Romanov. I am your father, and Lady Fiona was your mother. You are my son.” Lord Sebastian reached out to hold Ezra, but he stepped back, pulling away from his embrace.“All these years…I kept calling you my father. All these years…I kept believing that I was a Romanov

I just don’t give a damn,” Ezra snapped back at him, his eyes gleaming with rage. “Get the hell out of my way unless you want to go back home in a wheelbarrow.”“You son of a gun!” One of the younger bandits corked his revolver and prepared to shoot Ezra in the leg when their leader stopped him.“Calm down, Willy. This one’s an angry young boy way over his head.” He chuckled, staring at Ezra from head to toe. “Judging by your clothes I’d say you are quite well off. Probably a noble, eh?”“I’m a Gunner,” Ezra replied curtly.“And which noble family do you belong to? I reckon your wealthy parents will pay good coin to see you alive again?” The bandit leader stepped forward and pulled back the bolt of his rifle. “My name’s Harwin. What’s yours?”“I don’t ha

Ezra realized he had set foot inside Centaur territory and immediately became cautious of his surroundings. Before venturing deeper he downed a healing potion to mend his fractured collar bone.“You need to be careful, my Lord. The Centaurs are a lot more territorial than bandits and excel at setting traps and ambushes,” Marlin advised as Ezra headed deeper into the forest.Having no experience of dealing with Centaurs, Ezra had no idea what to expect. All he could think of at this time was reaching the monastery and uncovering his past.“It must be heart-wrenching to know you are not a noble at all but some stray orphan abandoned by the peasants,” Marlin whispered, touching Ezra’s weak nerve.Ezra tried to ignore his comments, but the old Gunsmith kept poking him till he could not take it anymore.“If you don’t shut up this instant, you’re going to be in a world of pain!” Marlin chuckled at this. “You already know you cannot hurt me. I am a part of you now.”“You still need to feed

  • Reincarnated in another world with a Gunsmithing System   The hunter and the hunted

Ezra found himself in a precarious situation. He had been poisoned by the barbed vines and was now being hunted by a group of Centaur Warriors who had already picked up his scent. The Centaurs were among the few non-humans who still hated mankind. Though their populations had dwindled over the years due to the extensive raids carried out by the royal knights and paladins, the survivors still remained a huge threat to all humans. Since Centaurs possessed the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse, this gave them the dual benefit of having binocular vision as well as strong hind limbs for chasing prey and fleeing from pursuers. Being humanoid hybrids also meant that Centaurs possessed an extremely high level of intelligence and excelled at working as a team and setting traps and ambushes. Hiding behind a tall woody tree, Ezra peered around the corner and observed the Centaur Hunters nearby. They were inspecting the corpses of their fallen brethren and trying to figure o

Slowly but surely, the poison was starting to take its toll on Ezra’s body. His labored breaths caused him to cough violently, and he could feel a dull pain in his chest. With his fingers and legs trembling, he had no hope of shooting a running Centaur. However, the ring of fire prevented the Centaur Warriors from fleeing. “We need to put out the flames, or the whole forest will burn!” The Centaur Chief yelled between coughs. The other Centaurs started looking around for stones and pebbles which they could dump on the burning leaves to extinguish the fire. But the dense gray smoke made it extremely difficult for them as it filled their lungs and stung their eyes, bringing them to tears. Ezra peeked from cover and reloaded his Angus rifle with Flameshot Bullets. Dizzy and reeling, Ezra could not see his targets clearly as everything kept spinning around him. But he could hear the Centaurs yelling and running in panic. Even though Ezra could not aim properly, he lifted the rifl

As the forest burned, the flames danced over the treetops and dense gray smoke spiraled upward, blanketing the undergrowth. Alarmed by the wildfire, the animals scurried away and the birds flew off to seek refuge in distant trees. The Centaur tribe quickly forgot all about the intruder and focused all their efforts on averting the disaster at hand. The women rushed back and forth, carrying pails of water to dump on the flames while the Centaur Brutes started chopping down the burning trees to prevent the fire from spreading. This calamity kept the Centaurs distracted for now, but Marlin knew once they were done dealing with the forest fire they would put together a hunting party to track and kill the intruder responsible for this. “Damn it! Why do you always need to put us both in danger?” Marlin was seething with anger but there was little he could do without his body. “I swear being bound to you is a greater punishment than being eaten by ghouls!” Despite Marlin’s taunts and insu

Alas, his mother never got the chance to see him grow up,” a feminine voice stated wistfully. “The question remains, what must we do with him now?” the male voice questioned.“I think it is time to leave the choice in his hands,” a second feminine voice spoke aloud. “Wake up, my dear child. Your mortal troubles cannot touch you here. Wake up and choose.”Groggy and disoriented, Ezra slowly parted his eyelids and immediately squinted as the bright white light flooding the room smarted his eyes. Still dizzy and weak, he somehow rolled over and gasped.“Where am I? What happened?” “You are safe inside the Hall of Wandering Souls,” a measured feminine

“The hour of darkness descends upon this world like a shroud, and the bleeding moon beckons the Lord of Decay to reclaim his lost domain. Come forth and ascend the throne of darkness, my Lord!”Ezra’s heart pounded inside his chest like a caged animal, and his head throbbed in pain as he heard muffled words shouted in the distance. Lying in a bloody puddle on the black marble floor, he parted his droopy eyelids and saw Lord Wilhelm standing behind the altar and Lady Lillian facing him on the other side.Though Tanya’s face was hidden from view, Ezra could see her supple white fingers tingling as her delicate arm dangled from the stone altar. She was still alive, but Lord Wilhelm was already anointing the ceremonial dagger forged from infernal obsidian and preparing to plunge it into her heart.“You…cannot do it. You need the crimson moon to…summon Zepheroth,” Ezra said, fighting the pain.“The hour of our Lord is nigh. And all celestials shall obey his will,” Lord Wilhelm continued cha

No one can withstand its power!”Jasenki reloaded his weapon and fired again, unleashing another flaming barrage. But this time, a barrier of flames erupted around Ezra, cocooning him within an elemental shell. All fifteen fireballs exploded into sparks as they collided with the flame barrier, leaving Ezra unharmed.“Damn you, Ezra. • Lovers in Crime

Ezra looked at the two Spectral Companions hovering behind Jasenki and Cecilia and realized these spirits weren’t obtained from their ancestral artifacts. “I see you have abandoned your family relics,” he said, carefully analyzing the two specters with his Dragon Eye skill. “These spectral entities are gifts from the Lord of Decay,” Jasenki replied, raising his head with arrogance. “I bet you have never encountered anything so powerful before.”“Go on, Ezra. Call your little Spectral Basilisk, and let us see if it can stand up to our companions,” Cecilia mocked, casting a disdainful glance at Ezra’s tattered brown jacket and muddy black boots. “You still look as beggarly as before. I suppose some things never change. I am so glad I rejected you when I did.”Suddenly, Ezra’s eyes glinted, and his pupils brightened with a bright blue flame that blazed with magic energy. The scar on his chest glowed through his shirt, revealing his true power.Reaching inside his jacket, Ezra pulled out

  • Hour of Judgment

Following the glowing trail left behind by the Spectral Beholder, Ezra avoided the rot vines squirming in the mire, and the Medallion of Purity hanging over his chest shielded him from the swamp's corrupting influence.Dark geysers erupted around Ezra, spewing molten tar several feet in the air and filling the swamp with a sulfurous haze. The choking odor brought tears to his eyes, but he pushed on through the vaporous veil. The Spectral Beholder led Ezra to a small patch of dry land surrounded by rotting oak trees. As he stepped onto the elevated mound, he spotted a fiery blue orb floating in the distance.Ten more orbs appeared out of thin air, floating through the foggy darkness. At first glance, they looked like glowing power crystals, but as Ezra took a closer look, he realized these orbs weren’t floating crystals or fireflies, but Elven Wisps. The Elven Wisps were unique spectral entities only found in the Violet Everglades. Unlike Banshees and Spectral Wraiths, the Elven Wisps w

  • Lady of the Swamp

A weary traveler lost inside the Violet Everglades was an easy prey for the creatures of the dark, and Ezra had just encountered one such nefarious entity. But instead of fear, his eyes lit up with a strange hopefulness.“You called out to me in Tanya’s voice, so you must have seen her passing through. Point me toward the Fountain of Chaos, and I won’t kill you,” he spoke in a cold, emotionless voice, without even turning to look at the creature creeping toward him.The creature laughed at his words and rushed through the darkness, moving like a shadow to play with his mind. Her voice echoed from different directions as she disappeared like smoke and danced around Ezra.“You are in my home, youngling. The dark ones told me you’d be coming,” she cackled. “But you won’t be walking out alive. So, forget about your friend and save yourself if you can!”As Ezra stood there motionless, a howling shadow rushed past him and gathered on a dry patch of grass overgrown with violet tulips that glo

  • Swamped!

The upturned black carriage slowly sinking in the mud, had turned into a feasting ground for the necrophages prowling nearby. But these slimy creatures neither resembled Ghouls nor Drekavacs. At first glance, it was easy to mistake them for Merfolk due to their scaly bodies and fish-like gills. However, their sharp black claws and long white fangs gave away their real nature.About thirteen of them were gathered around the carriage, fighting for the best share of the food and tearing out lumps of flesh from the dead horses lying in the mud. Seeing no human bodies around, Ezra concluded the cultists must have ditched the carriage upon entering the swamp and proceeded on foot from this point onward.“The cultists are already here. We should be careful,” Ezra cautioned the Count as he slid out of the saddle and dismounted from his horse. It was far too dangerous to ride any animal into the swamp, leaving him with no choice but to walk.“We are losing time here. Let’s go in and kill thos

  • The Everglades dilemma

Marquis Desmond volunteered to stay behind and defend Stonewell while Count Gressil and Aurelia joined Ezra, ready to venture into the Everglades and rescue Tanya. However, as soon as Flavius heard their plan, he immediately objected to the idea.“The Violet Everglades is a perilous swamp haunted by malevolent specters and damned elven warriors who were cursed to roam this world forever. Chaos magic flows in its murky depths, twisting everything it touches and distorting the surroundings. Aberrations and magical anomalies are as common in the Everglades as trees in a forest. It is not wise to willingly venture into that death trap.”“The cultists have Tanya, and they are going to sacrifice her at the Fountain of Chaos. I don’t care about the dangers!” Count Gressil retorted, his fatherly feelings pushing all thoughts of caution out of his mind. But Flavius, being a distant guest, could look at things objectively without getting overwhelmed by his emotions. Ezra rummaged through the pile of ashes on the ground, hoping to find that one elusive clue that would lead him to Tanya. But all he managed to get his hands on was a pile of disjointed bones buried amidst the heap.“God, how I wish you were here with me, Marlin. I could really use your help.”The thought of summoning Vorus’ departed soul to this mortal plane crossed Ezra’s mind for a moment, but as he looked at his shattered Mystic Lamp medallion, he remembered the necromancer had destroyed his old relic, vanquishing the Tainted Djinn.“Damn it, Vorus. You are a pain in the behind even after your death!” Ezra clenched his fists, anger, and frustration surging in his heart. Even after killing all three necromancers, he had learned nothing about Tanya’s whereabouts. As Ezra’s pocket watch ticked the minutes away, his heart raced faster and faster. He knew he barely had a couple of hours to locate Tanya and free her before the other cultists sacrificed her.The sound of heavy footsteps m
