The priests returned to their positions once all the candles had been lit, and they immediately resumed their prayer. None of them had any idea that Ezra was right there in the room with them, but one wrong move could give him away.

As the priests closed their eyes and folded their hands to ask the Goddess for forgiveness, a heavy voice echoed within the walls of the inner sanctum.

“I see your sad plight, and it breaks my heart, children. But fear not, for light shall always drive out the shadows and cleanse the land of all evil!”

Startled by the unexpected voice, the priests opened their eyes and stared at the idol of the Goddess.

“Who…who are you?” one of the older priests finally asked, gathering his courage.

“I am Aranya, the God of Creation!” the voice replied. “As Ishani’s elder brother, it is my duty to protect her and guide her followers when they stray from her path. But I am afraid her light is dwindling from your world.”

Ezra quickly unleashed two controlled bursts of

Headstrong and determined, Ezra set off to look for the last missing component without paying any heed to Marlin’s repeated warnings. As the night darkened, the clouds gradually drifted away, letting the moon bathe the streets in its dim glow. Most of the patrolling guards had retired to the barracks by now, and the few who were still on active duty were starting to yawn. Since Aranor had not come under any direct attack and the undead hadn’t been spotted on the nearby roads, the guards had become complacent. The prophecy meant little to them, and many even thought it was another lie to keep the people faithful to Ishani. Ezra stuck to the shadows, carefully avoiding the street lamps and bright windows as he traversed the dimly lit streets with the wind still howling outside. As Ezra finally reached the old part of town, the last of the patrolling guards disappeared in the distance. Most of them preferred not to go near the merfolk, and the only ones posted to watch over this gate

As the night darkened, fleecy gray clouds drifted over the Erubean Plains, and the restless wind whistled from the east, carrying with it the damp stench of rotting mushrooms. Ezra had a tall task ahead of him, with no one to rely upon except the Gunsmith bound to his arm. Unlike the town guards patrolling the streets of Aranor, the Skeletal Warriors looked vigilant and prepared. And since they had been tasked with guarding the tomb by a higher entity, there was no way to lure them away from the area. Ezra peeked around the rock he was hiding behind and carefully observed their patrol routes for a minute. The Skeletal Warriors seemed to be moving back and forth at regular intervals and occasionally turning to their left to observe the area outside. Meanwhile, the Skeletal Archers were standing still with rusty iron-tipped arrows drawn over their longbows, ready to let loose at a moment’s notice. Though threatening in a large group, these lowly undead were the least of Ezra’s con

[New Shooting Objective Acquired: Eliminate the Beholder while under the effect of a dark curse!] [Note: Contracting multiple curses will provide a greater reward!] The throbbing red eye darkened as it glared at Ezra and the Beholder’s twisted black lips parted to reveal a slippery red tongue dripping with saliva. Ezra fired his weapon without a second thought, unleashing a volley of magic bullets at the enemy. But the Beholder’s psionic shield absorbed the flashy blue projectiles, rendering Ezra’s attack utterly ineffective. Without giving Ezra any chance to retaliate, the Beholder rushed at him. “Magic Burst!” Ezra shouted, pointing his right palm toward the Beholder. But his skill failed to activate. Thwack! A slimy green tentacle lashed out at Ezra, smacking him away and sending him flying into the marble pillar behind. The impact from the blow nearly broke his back, leaving him groaning in pain. Blood trickled from the corners of Ezra’s mouth as he tried to get back on

The fight with the Beholder had left Ezra bruised and battered, but he quickly put all that behind as the newly acquired skill piqued his interest. “Use skill: Shadow Gun!” Ezra exclaimed, raising his right hand, but a searing pain made him clench his fist and drop to his knees. “What the…hell is happening.” “I believe the curse is still active. You cannot use any skills before cleansing your body. The shackles will tighten their grip every time you try to use a skill,” Marlin explained. “You need to visit a shrine and seek the aid of a priest. Only they can dispel dark curses like these.” Ezra swiped to his Gunner profile and tapped on the ‘status effect’ panel. [Two curses contracted:] [1. Shackles of the Fallen.] [2. Never in his wildest dreams would Ezra have thought about raiding an elven tomb in the middle of the night. But his perilous adventure had been fruitful. Not only had he acquired all the crafting components for the new weapon, but also managed to get his hands on a rare soul gem. “Congratulations, my dear Lord. Your persistence finally paid off,” Marlin greeted Ezra as he gazed at the items in his inventory. This nightly escapade had turned out to be quite rewarding for Ezra. Now all he needed to do was find a way to cleanse his body and get rid of the curses before returning home. Ezra returned the dagger to the elven king’s corpse, and drew the lid over the coffin, closing it shut. Putting the dead elf back to rest, he headed up the stairs and climbed out of the tomb. By now, the clouds drifting across the sky had disappeared, and the crescent moon was visible again along with its retinue of twinkling stars. As Ezra walked out of the ruin, he felt a tremor run along his spine.

By the time Ezra and Aurelia returned home, Lord Sebastian and the others had already gone to sleep. It saved Ezra the trouble of having to explain himself to his father, but Aurelia still remained cold to him. “Good night, sister,” Ezra wished her, hoping she would return the courtesy, but her words remained measured. “Night,” she replied curtly as she walked back to her room. Marlin was starting to enjoy this family drama, and he could not help but mock Ezra. “Oh, the poor little boy…Losing his only friend in the world. Must feel sad?” “Aurelia still loves me and cares for me,” Ezra replied. “She’ll never give up on me.” Marlin wanted to amuse himself a while longer by taunting Ezra, but he once again proved to be more mature than Marlin had expected him to be. As soon as Ezra was back inside his own room, he shut the door and set to work on his Gunsmithing workbench. Retrieving all the crafting components from his inventory, he put them on the table. In the dead of the night, when the clock was about to strike three, Ezra woke up with a start, feeling a searing pain in his right leg. As he parted his eyelids, in the dim glow of the night lamp he spotted something black and slimy squirming on his wooden door. “What the hell!” Ezra sat up straight and tried to pull his leg free, but something pulled it back. He quickly threw his quilt aside, and his eyes widened in horror as he discovered a writhing mass of tarry black tentacles wrapped around his leg like vines. “Let go of me!” Ezra kicked the squirming tentacles with his free leg, but a second pair of tentacles grabbed his left leg as well, binding him in place. The more Ezra struggled, the more the tentacles constricted. Soon, they cut off the blood flow to his thighs, and Ezra felt his legs going numb. The squirming mass of slimy black tentacles covering the keyhole, spread all across the door, blocking Ezra’s only exit. It slowly spread to the surrounding walls, growing new

Aurelia had barged into Ramel’s room with the intention of accusing him of attacking Ezra and bringing him to justice. However, what she saw completely altered her perspective. Ramel was still confined to his bed and it didn’t seem like he could even attack a fly in his current state. “How did a damn maid manage to stab you?” Aurelia enquired, looking around the room. “You seriously expect me to believe you could not stop a simple commoner from attacking you?” “I...did not see it coming. She must have drugged me, sister,” Ramel whispered back, gritting his teeth to fight the pain. “Could…we maybe talk…after I get some treatment?” Aurelia did not want to involve any outsiders yet, so instead of calling for a physician, she yanked the knife out all by herself and helped Ramel drink a healing potion. It took a few seconds for the wound to heal, after which Ramel slowly sat up straight and threw his quilt aside. Touching the scar on his stomach, he grinned. “Good thing she didn’t use

They had been marching for two hours now, and even the horses looked tired. But Aurelia knew they had to get moving as soon as possible, or Lorelai could use her blood magic to wreak havoc on them.As the soldiers secured the village and gathered in the middle, Count Gressil lit a bonfire and ordered the men to drink up and recheck their gear.Meanwhile, Sir Galahar instructed two of his most trusted Royal Guards to scout the way ahead and scope out Ignar

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. • Malodor's Fall

A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is th

Staring death in the eye had become a habitual hazard for Ezra by now, but his legs froze as he saw the Undead Hydra’s serpentine head inching toward him. “Not tonight!” Ezra tossed a Shock Grenade at the hydra and jumped back. The blast zapped the oversized head, forcing the hydra to pull its snaking neck back into the green mist and disappear once again.Although the Basilisk’s Toxic Cocoon was shielding Ezra from the hydra’s poisonous breath, he could feel his eyes burning from the smoky haze. It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding? Show yourself!” Suddenly, a hydra head appeared from the left and sprayed Ezra with dark fumes. He started coughing fi

  • Hydra's Breath

Ezra was so focused on stopping Malodor’s demonic spell that he had forgotten all about the hydra. But now that the monster had emerged from its dark lair, there was no way forward without slaying it first.“I sure am glad we aren’t fighting it inside its underwater cave,” Marlin whispered in his cold voice, his cursed eye glued to the hydra. “But it’s still going to be one hell of a battle.”The Undead Hydra glared at Ezra, its five vicious heads bobbing up and down as long forked tongues slithered out of its mouths. It was a gigantic monster covered in slimy gray scales and patches of rotting skin infested with maggots.“How the hell is that thing even alive?” Ezra questioned, unable to comprehend how this monstrosity was still standing even though its rotting flesh was covered in thousands of open wounds and deep scars.“You know they call it an Undead Hydra for a reason,” Marlin whispered back. “I am quite sure Malodor resurrected a dead hydra with his dark magic and cursed it to

  • The first confrontation

Cekunia’s walls had been breached, and the undead lurking in the streets had been wiped out with extreme force. A lone Gunner had led the machines through the captured city and marched straight to its heart.Malodor was impressed by Ezra’s unshakeable resolve and great leadership skills. Despite having no support from the Imperial Army or Royal Gunners, he had somehow managed to bring Cekunia to its knees, and now the port city was wide open for assault.“You did well, Lord Ezra. I must confess I never expected you to make it this far,” Malodor’s wispy voice echoed in the darkness as he manifested like a shadow, floating ten feet above the ground, his withered old frame wrapped in loose black robes. “What do you seek, my Lord? And I mean, what do you really seek?” he whispered in a cold voice, staring into Ezra’s soul.“I am here for Tanya,” Ezra replied bluntly, glaring right back at the levitating necromancer.Malodor heaved an exhausted sigh and replied softly, “That girl belongs t

  • Malodor's corrupted stronghold

Ezra downed a magic restoration potion and topped off with an elemental affinity potion before heading in through the destroyed wall. The Blademaster Sentries had already gone ahead and engaged the Skeletal Warriors protecting the gate. When Ezra entered Cekunia with the rest of his troops, he was shocked to see how the undead had transformed the port city and turned it into a hellscape tainted with rot and corruption. The huts and cottages were covered in black tar, and the small shacks had been demolished to create room for bone totems that went deep into the ground and tainted the city with their malign influence. The city’s only cemetery had been plundered and razed to the ground, and the feral ghouls feasting on the rotten remains of the dead had turned it into a bloody boneyard.“Damn…This was my mother’s city. This is where she was raised and educated. I remember Aurelia telling me that mother loved watching the ships sail by on a starless night. But they destroyed everything.

  • All becomes flesh

Marching straight into the heart of an undead city did not seem like the most prudent thing, even though Ezra had an army of Sentry Bots at his back, and Marlin was quick to dissuade him.“You don’t even know what’s on the other side. It’s not a smart idea to climb into that dark hole without a plan.”Ezra brushed off his words of caution with a dismissive shrug. “It doesn’t matter what’s on the other side. I can handle it.”But before Ezra could invade the city with his forces, a dirty green liquid oozed out of the wall and the ridges on its surface started throbbing spasmodically. A repulsive belching noise smothered the silence as the ruptured portion of the wall regurgitated half-eaten bones and wads of flesh which filled the gap, closing the hole.Ezra watched in disgust as the wall convulsed like a feverish pig that was about to vomit its last meal all over the haystacks. The sight of the wall reforming with the remains of the dead made Ezra retch hard, and he had to close his
