The magic rain that had been pelting the capital for hours, drove the people to seek shelter, leaving the streets lightless and deserted. And just like before, the shower had ripped open dimensional portals all across the city, opening the gates for Stalkers and Wraiths to escape from their shadowy realms.

As Ezra hurried across the empty streets, he kept his eyes open for anomalies, and his ears alert to the slightest noise. His only respite was that the mobs had dispersed, and most of the guards had sought shelter inside their watch towers and barracks, making it easier for him to move unnoticed.

Avoiding the smoky pits swirling with gust, and side-stepping the flaming blue puddles on the cobbled road, Ezra made his way across the city accompanied by nothing but his shadow.

The splash of his boots resonated with his pounding heart at every turn as he desperately tried to avoid the Shadow Lurkers who had just started emerging from the portals and were now pouring onto the streets lik

But it failed to realize that the rules of the hunt had changed tonight.Ezra snapped his fingers to conjure a dark orb mid-air and gradually transformed it into a gigantic battle axe with a smooth curved blade and a long black handle studded with spik

The dark fog choking the city streets gradually dissipated as the Abyssal Lurker’s mutilated body turned to ashes. Even in death, it emanated an aura of despair that sent the curious rats scurrying for the sewers, where they perished within a few seconds. Not many Gunners in the city could boast of surviving an encounter with an Abyssal Lurker at night, but Ezra had managed to come out on top without using any firearms. He could see how casting low-tier dark spells was convenient in such fights. The only downside was that these basic dark spells were only effective against weaker enemies who had been isolated from the group. But there was no way his tricks would work against a bigger horde or a stronger opponent.Ezra knew his enhanced magic skills were far more powerful than these weak conjuration spells and they provided him a chance to be more versatile in combat. The darkness festering inside Ezra oozed out of his inky black palms and leaked out of the soles of his blackened feet. His lips turned pale and a gray numbness discolored his face, giving him the appearance of a corpse drained of all blood.Noticing the drastic change, Tanya realized Ezra’s life force was slowly being sucked away and it made her suspect the dark mage kneeling on the ground.“What are you doing? He is dying!” she shouted, threatening to cast a holy spell and strike him down.Fortunately, Glenn was there to stop her before she could do any harm.“My Lady, Zala is not trying to kill Lord Ezra. My brother is only trying to help him.”“Help him?” Tanya snapped angrily, her eyes narrowing on him. “Just look at Ezra’s face. Can you not see that he is dying? Your brother is draining his life!”Glenn shook his head. “No, my Lady. He is trying to bind himself with the dark energy trapped inside Lord Ezra’s body. It might be the only way to save him. You need to trust Zala.”Tan

The stormy night ended abruptly as the sun’s golden spears pierced the clouds, ushering in a new dawn. The rain had stopped long back, and the wind died down a few minutes later.Despite the day being bright and warm, Ezra felt chilly and feverish. Most of his memories from the previous night were a hazy blur of disjointed images and disconnected thoughts. All he could manage to piece together was his last conversation with the princess before he stepped out of the palace grounds, setting off homeward.Glenn helped Ezra to his feet and gave him a new shirt and a clean pair of pants. He changed into his new clothes and sat down on a little cot in the corner of the room, still dizzy from the ordeal.“Where’s Zala?” Ezra asked as fragments of what had happened last night flashed in his mind.Glenn did not have the heart to repeat the tragedy, so Tanya narrated the whole thing to Ezra. After listening to everything, Ezra’s face fell, and he hung his head in despair. “So…another person sac

The only Gunner who had managed to slay a dragon in Valaria’s long history was the legendary hero Edwaine Erlock. But that was almost two hundred years ago, and the dragon he had gunned down was a Silver-winged Firetail, the weakest among all the species.Since then, there had only been a couple of dragon sightings off the coast of Valaria, but they never ventured inland as the Elder Dragons of Xerkonia had forged a peace treaty with the humans in exchange for the Island of Yikendi, which was a treasure trove of awakened magic crystals. However, the dragon Servius had spoken about was far different than those in Xerkonia. The elven Gunner was the first to object to this seemingly impossible task. She raised her hand once and activated a magic cube to get her voice across to the crowd.“The Grand Dueling Tournament has been held every year for over three decades, but never in its history have the participants been asked to slay a dragon. This is unfair!” she protested. “There is no way

As Ezra flew over the city and headed for the volcanic plateau, his mind raced with excitement. He remembered his first hunt, and it brought back fond memories. By killing the griffin, Ezra had reclaimed his reputation and earned the title of Ishani’s Chosen Sword, but many grueling days had passed since then. Forced to flee from his own home, he had to conceal his true identity and keep living in the shadows. But Ezra’s days of living in obscurity were now ticking down quickly. He intended to reveal his real identity before challenging the champion. However, for that, he first needed to win this crucial round.“Accelerate!” Ezra ignited his magic power to boost his flying speed, and it enabled him to soar across the clouds like a blazing comet. The volcanic plateau was only a few dozen miles away from Magaravia, and Ezra wanted to find the dragon before the other participants, especially Archibald. As Ezra was flying across the sky, he suddenly spied something from the corner of his

Archibald readied his silver-barreled musket and flew up to get a better view. He was still under the impression that he was the only one hunting the dragon, but little did he know he was in for a rude awakening.Ezra rocketed across the sky and blasted through the spurting geysers like a comet. “What the hell was that?” Archibald’s eyes widened as he saw Ezra through his sights for a brief moment. But before he could track him, Ezra disappeared amidst the smoke. For a second, Archibald thought he was just imagining things, but soon he caught up with Ezra again as he speared through the smoky veil and appeared in his line of sight.“Damn you! How did you get here so fast?” Archibald frowned, his teeth grinding against each other and his fingers digging into the butt of his rifle. “You must be barking mad if you think you can take my prize from me. The dragon’s head belongs to me and me alone!”While Archibald watched from a safe distance, Ezra dived straight into the maw of the furnac

Bang!Crack!A loud shot rang out from above, piercing the clouds and leaving a blazing white trail in its wake. The enchanted bullet split into three in mid-air and struck the dragon on its head.Archibald had just fired a Fragmenting Disintegration Round that was designed to penetrate the toughest of armors. But instead of punching through the dragon’s hide, the bullets bounced off its scaly head.“There is no way any creature can shrug off this bullet,” Archibald gasped, his piercing gaze glued to the dragon’s reptilian frame. Without wasting another second, he reloaded his weapon and took another shot. This time, another volley of Disintegration Rounds struck the dragon’s head, leaving a scar on the left side of its bony jaw. But it was merely a flesh wound, no deeper than a few millimeters.“Just a scratch. Impossible!” Archibald’s eyes widened in disbelief as he used his True Sight skill to zoom in on the dragon’s face. His shots had hit their target with perfect accuracy but fai

It was my fault for allowing him to lead the charge all alone,” Marquis Desmond responded, his eyes still glued to the bloodstained patch of withered grass where his friend had breathed his last.“They even swallowed the bodies,” one of the paladins mumbled anxiously. The fear soon spread through their ranks, and the rest of the troops became increasingly agitate

  • Bloodbath on the battlefield

Corrupted Slashers stood at the top of the necrophagic hierarchy, and despite being similar to ghouls, they were driven by wild hunger and often could not differentiate between friends and foes.A single Slasher could slaughter an entire village, and only trained Gunners could handle a Slasher prowling among a pack of ghouls. However, these undead monstrosities were rarely found in the open and disliked hunting in groups.Strangely enough, Marquis Desmond could already count fifteen Slashers hiding in the shadows. It was a bizarre occurrence, one that posed a bigger threat than a horde of ghouls."There is too many of them," Marquis Sullivan whispered, furrowing his brow. "They must have been summoned by that necromancer to guard this valley.""Well, Lady Aurelia did say it wasn't going to be a walk in the park," Marquis Desmond responded.Count Gressil, being the most experienced Gunner, rode to the frontlines and prepared to engage the enemy head-on.“I can handle these bastards. The craggy mountains flanking their path watched on like ancient guardians, their ominous cliffs darkening the skyline. The arid path running down the middle was wide enough for troops to pass unhindered, but there was always the danger of being ambushed from the cliffs above. Count Gressil had known this rugged terrain for decades and was no stranger to such tricks. He could sense that the eerie silence pervading the darkness was merely the calm before the storm, and it kept him on his toes.“Never thought I would have to march on Ignar as a foe,” Marquis Sullivan was the first to speak, breathing some comfort into the tense atmosphere. His eyes scanned the cliffs as he continued riding. “I sure am glad we are not fighting elves. Their archers would have picked us off like fish in a barrel from up there.”“We still are sitting ducks until we cross this valley,” Count Gressil r

However, Lorelai’s blood magic had brought the city to its knees in one fell swoop.Despite her unconventional methods, she had succeeded far beyond Malodor’s wildest expectations, and now this great city once known for its values of chivalry and justice was wallowing in darkness, its walls and towers stained with the blood of the innocent.Inside the grand hall of Bloodflame Castle, Lorelai was seated on a bed of blood orchids, surrounded by nine pregnant women bound in dark vines.A clay pot in the middle of the room was gradually filling with bloo

Led by Sir Galahar and his Royal Gunners, the Imperial army had finally arrived at Racinta. The ruined city looked inhospitable, much like the rest of the barren lands around it, but it was much safer to be camping inside Racinta, than resting in the open while the undead were howling in the dark. The dome of holy light shielding the ruined village kept the shadows at bay and allowed the soldiers to finally catch their breaths. They had been marching for two hours now, and even the horses looked tired. But Aurelia knew they had to get moving as soon as possible, or Lorelai could use her blood magic to wreak havoc on them.As the soldiers secured the village and gathered in the middle, Count Gressil lit a bonfire and ordered the men to drink up and recheck their gear.Meanwhile, Sir Galahar instructed two of his most trusted Royal Guards to scout the way ahead and scope out Ignar f

  • Dead men tell no lies

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. • Malodor's Fall

A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is thi

It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding?
