Ezra narrowed his eyes on the Tower of Corruption as Zala turned the knob and dropped two sandbags to reduce the drag and take the airship higher.

The tower erected on the ground roughly resembled an ancient watch tower with a wooden framework and black stakes jutting out of its sides to make it appear more formidable.

A raised platform on top served as a shooting deck for the Skeletal Archers housed within, and a black gem glistened on its crown, hoisted by two severed human hands crossed at an angle.

Each time the gem vibrated, it released a corrupting pulse that contaminated the surroundings, tainting the minds of living beings unfortunate enough to be caught within its sphere of influence.

Ezra watched as the vultures circling above fell from the sky, struck by the corrupting pulse. But instead of staying dead, the birds underwent a terrifying change.

Their bones burst out of their chests, and their beaks turned black and grew larger. Every feather on their body became coated with

The Vespid Swamps had always been notorious for their terrifying wildlife which included several kinds of deadly reptiles and amphibians. It was the reason why most people chose to avoid going anywhere near it.Glenn would have preferred to take the longer route and go around the swamp, but the two roads on each side were guarded by Towers of Corruption.Although the airship could fly above the clouds to avoid detection, the magic crystal powering it had expended most of its energy, and trying to boost its power and increase the altitude again would slow the airship down and prolong their journey. To shorten their travel time, Glenn and Zala had decided to take the quickest route by flying over the swamps. However, this treacherous path also brought them closer to the monster lurking in the depths of the tarry black bog.As the Wind Rider approached the Vespid Swamps, Ezra leaned over the railing and looked below. The wetland was festering with corruption, and every single tree was cho

A creature like the Ancient Garnock did not belong in the human world. It was a being tied to the abyssal realm, but the scourge spreading across the lands had destroyed the barrier between the planes, tearing open a dark rift that allowed the monstrosity to cross over to the other side. There were no books in Valaria that described the Garnock and no tales on the lips of the oldest adventurers that narrated an encounter with this abyssal being. Yet, Ezra found himself face-to-face with the monstrous abomination. With two of its tentacles holding onto the airship, it looked like the Garnock had its hands full, but as soon as it spotted Ezra flying away from the gondola, its other tentacles emerged from the slimy bog. Wriggling like gigantic worms, the tentacles prepared to catch another prey as the Garnock locked its eyes on Ezra.Thwip! The largest tentacles lashed out straight toward Ezra. But before it could jab him in the head, he blasted it with a hail of magic bullets. The Garno

Glenn lauded Ezra’s efforts as he returned to the airship while Zala looked on in disbelief. He was among the few dark mages who knew about the powers of the Ancient Garnock and the threat it posed to any magic user.“Not even the most powerful Elementalist could have survived that encounter. But you came out on top and even managed to kill the Garnock,” Zala spoke with a note of admiration in his voice. “I never believed Glenn when we told me about you, but now that I have witnessed your power with my own eyes, I cannot deny you are truly Ishani’s favored sword. Perhaps there is still hope left for humanity.”“I have to admit I have never seen a Gunner using such advanced skills in battle at such a young age. You are truly a prodigy, Lord Ezra,” Glenn added.Ezra brushed the praise aside and looked westward. “The Garnock was powerful, but it wasn’t too smart. I am more concerned about the three necromancers.”“You will need the help of Elementalists and sorcerers to deal with their da

The four Forest Guardians stared at Ezra, their hollow bones peeping through the holes in their faces. Only a handful of intruders had been lucky enough to escape their clutches but Ezra was all alone with no one to watch his back.“I see it’s four against one, but I am used to being outnumbered by now,” Ezra huffed arrogantly and fixed his gaze on the Forest Guardian in front of him. “Eat this!” he shouted, firing his gun on full auto. The submachine gun sprayed the Forest Guardian with magic bullets, but the lumbering hybrid didn't even flinch. It would have shredded any other creature to pieces by now, but the moving tree crossed its arms together and resisted the attack with its woody limbs.Ezra continued firing till his whole magazine was emptied but shockingly enough his magic bullets bounced off the hybrid's woody bark like harmless needles.A hundred magic bullets peppered the Forest Guardian without leaving a single scratch on its body. “How is this possible?” Ezra looked s

They initially looked like dark silhouettes, but gradually transformed into clones, copying Ezra’s physical features to perfection and even replicating his clothes and weapons. The four Forest Guardians were confused by this sudden increase in their enemy’s numbers. It now became impossible for them to find the real Ezra since all the shadows resembled him perfectly.Unable to understand what was happening, the Forest Guardians started attacking the shadows at random. Their vines whipped through the crowd, targeting multiple clones at once. And as soon as they struck a shadow it disappeared. • Reincarnated in another world with a Gunsmithing System   The tale of the firstborns

The elf’s words painted a completely different picture of Valaria than what Ezra was used to. Every history book he had ever read described the lifelong enmity between the elves and the humans and how the first kings had fought tooth and nail to defend their cities from the elven invaders. There had never been a time when the humans and elves weren’t engaged in a bloody war, and King Rudeus and his ancestors had fought countless battles to push the elven armies back and reclaim the lands from the elven rulers. However, after the last Great War that had lasted twenty years, the elves signed a peace treaty with the humans and promised to stay away from the major settlements. A hundred years had passed since the last conflict, and now King Reginald Aubrey followed a policy of appeasement to establish friendly relations with the elves. Though the old elven royals still harbored hatred against the humans, a few new bloods had started mingling with humans and living alongside them. However,

The blood dripping down his face hardly bothered Ezra, and he seemed to pay no heed to the necrophages growling around him.A horde of feral ghouls had rushed into the firearms factory, and the place was now swarming with undead, but Ezra focused on the dark tower in the middle of the courtyard.“I am coming for you, Vorus!” he yelled, summoning three Corrupted Cannons. But instead of firing them, Ezra combined the three cannons into an even bigger weapon that looked almost like a terrifying rail gun. Lord Lucius heaved a sigh of relief but still kept his sniper trained on Ezra. “You know, the good ones don’t always win. This is a cruel and unfair world. But at least you tried,” Lester scoffed in his arrogant voice as his war axe grated against the wet floor like a long-handed scythe. “Your father was too self-righteous for his own good. He should have just taken the hint and stepped down while he had the chance. It would have certainly saved us all the trouble of killing him.”Those cruel words stung Ezra’s heart. Once again, he was reminded of that fateful day when he had lost everything. But instead of trying to lash out or curse Lester, he remained as calm as a monk.“My father trusted you. We thought you actually cared about the people of Aranor. But you really just care about filling your pockets,” he spoke in a cold, emotionless voice.Lester chuckled and grabbed his war axe with both hands, raising it above his head. Cracking his shoulders, he stretched his arms back to lo

The Primal Demon was a hulking mass of muscle and rage, obedient only to the Lord of Decay. Its sheer size was enough to make any army turn pale and flee in terror, but the Imperial Troops were surrounded by ghouls on all sides and had nowhere left to run.“The demons walk among us now. Ishani has abandoned our world,” Marquis Desmond spoke in a cold voice, his eyes glued to the colossal brute glaring at them.“Run back!”“We can’t kill that thing!”“Move!”Panicked voices rang out across the battlefield as the Imperial Swordsmen ran back, fleeing from what looked like certain death.Swish! The Primal Demon swung its burning meat cleaver, slashing a wide arc through the terror-stricken crowd and slicing the swordsmen in half.Blood and guts splashed out in the air as horrified screams echoed into the night. Outside the walls of Stonewell, the Imperial Army was nearly spent from the endless fighting. The ghouls and resurrected skeletons kept coming even as the soldiers killed them in hundreds. “I don’t think we can hold them back much longer,” Marquis Desmond relayed in his hoarse voice, his throat sore from shouting commands and organizing his troops. “These things just keep coming. There is no end to their numbers.”“Don’t give up just yet. Ezra needs us to hold the line and keep them distracted,” Aurelia replied, firing a firebolt from her musket. It burned through five packs of ghouls and cleared a path to the Infernal Gates. “Those Lich Kings are doing all the summoning. If we kill them, there will be no one left to raise the dead again.”“The problem is getting close to them,” Count Gressil said, riding down from the frontlines. “We tried shooting at them, but they are protected by unholy barriers. Not even my enchanted bullets could get through.”While the three of them were busy

Fighting demons was nothing new for Ezra. He had single-handedly vanquished a Flame Demon barely a few weeks back and then held his own against an even stronger Abyssal Demon. However, the Shadow Demon blocking his path presented a whole different challenge. To make matters worse, Vorus had already enlisted the help of a dozen more cultists to empower his spell and prevent the dark barrier from shrinking further. Now, even with one of the dark towers disabled, the spell’s influence continued growing stronger by the minute.Ezra could feel his muscles turning stiff as the decaying influence of the dark spell slowly sapped his strength, wreaking havoc on his body. The Shadow Demon noticed Ezra’s hands trembling as he leveled Lord Sebastian’s enchanted musket against his shoulder and took aim. A ring of blue light appeared in front of the barrel, and as Ezra pulled the trigger, a bolt of forked lightning erupted from his rifle. It crackled through the air and zapped the Shadow Demon, bu

  • Rotting away

Destroying the tainted crystal disabled the dark tower, severing its link from Vorus. With just two dark towers empowering his spell, the dark barrier shrunk back to the walls of Stonewell, weakening in intensity.Ezra breathed a sigh of relief as the decay slowed down, giving him just enough time to drink another Rapid Rejuvenation potion.Although it wasn’t a permanent solution, the magic brew helped Ezra buy just a little more time for himself.“One down. Two to go.” As Ezra looked outside, the shrieking of wyverns alerted him. The dark ones had heard the explosion and were now circling the skies around the tower.Flying out of there was only going to land Ezra in more trouble, so instead of taking the quick way out, he jumped down onto a broken ledge and rolled onto the rubble to cushion his fall.It wasn’t the smoothest path, and it tore Ezra’s jacket and bruised his legs, but he managed to get out of the tower before the necro bats swarmed in through the hole in the wall.Ezra’s

Vorus’ mastery over dark magic, combined with Stonewell’s advanced technology, allowed him to amplify his spell, increasing not just its area of influence but its power as well.Encased inside a dome of decay, Stonewell remained impervious to all attacking forces. The Imperial Army fighting outside was forced to back away and adopt a more defensive approach as the dark barrier expanded, engulfing a good quarter of the vast plains.Even the elves under Flavius’ command ran back to escape the effects of the spell.Ezra, however, had no choice but to push through the city while struggling with the constant life drain. Every second he spent inside the dark barrier leeched an hour from his life, making him age unnaturally.Although Ezra had only been inside Stonewell for a couple of minutes, he could already feel his limbs growing stiff and his skin turning wrinkly and soft.“Why don’t you just attack and kill Vorus directly? Why go through all the trouble of sabotaging the dark towers and

  • Rot and Decay

Ezra moved like a shadow, his boots kissing the cobbled road noiselessly as he sneaked up to the walls of Stonewell. A barred iron gate guarded by Elite Gunners obstructed his path while an army of Skeletal Archers kept watch from the battlements above.Even though the night was blindingly dark, the faint light from the spectral lamps hanging from the wall flickered in the soft-dying wind, illuminating the city in an eerie glow.In the past, a traveler could hear the grinding of factory gears and the crackling flames of the blazing furnace even from outside the gate, but now this once bustling city had fallen into a deathly slumber. The only sounds that reached Ezra’s ears were the wailing of banshees and the distant howls of feral ghouls. No living creature could survive within the walls of Stonewell while the dark barrier was active, yet Ezra was puzzled to see two human Gunners guarding the gate.“This doesn’t make any sense. How are they fighting the curse?” he mumbled in confusi
