Ezra and Aurelia rushed out of the prison and flew straight to the shrine where Tanya had been staying in one of the priestly quarters.

Count Gressil had already arrived along with Marquis Sullivan, and despite the several restrictions, the shrine was filled with Elite Knights.

As Ezra entered the room, he immediately noticed the tarry black circle on the tiled floor. It was still wet and pulsating with dark energy.

“They teleported straight into her room via a dark portal,” he observed before shuffling across to examine the other things.

“And just how the hell did they manage to get inside a shrine? I thought Ishani’s light repelled all practitioners of dark magic!” Count Gressil was fuming with rage, his bloodshot eyes restlessly flitting across the room. “I should have never allowed her to follow this madness. Now, her blind devotion has cost her everything. Damn, the shrine. Damn, Ishani!”

Moving to the far end of the room, Ezra reached Tanya’s bed and found the bedsheets stained

Marlin was reminded of his younger days as he watched Ezra work tirelessly under the light of the table lamp. He measured every single line with perfect precision and sketched like a man possessed, till finally, a faint outline emerged on the paper. There were several mechanisms in this special weapon, each composed of hundreds of tiny moving components. But this particular gun looked nothing like a rifle or even a hand cannon. In fact, it resembled something close to a mechanical extension of a Golem’s arm.“Is this also a weapon from your world?” Marlin asked, unable to contain his curiosity any longer.“Yes, it is one of the most powerful guns to exist in my world. But it's usually fitted on battle vehicles since it is too heavy for a single soldier to carry around,” Ezra replied without pausing his work.Marlin was surprised by this new information. “There are vehicles in your world that wield guns?” he asked.“No, the gunners stationed inside man the guns. The advanced scouts returned just as Ezra was about to ride out, but only half the squad had managed to make it back to the city. Among the five returning scouts, two were critically wounded, while another was delirious and shaking in his boots.“What happened out there?” Aurelia rushed to them, demanding an explanation while the medics tended to the wounded.“They are everywhere. We are surrounded by death!” the delirious one spoke out in a cracking voice, his eyes gleaming with madness. “They are…beasts from the blackness. They cannot be killed. I saw them…their claws…and their fangs.”“Speak some sense, will you? What attacked you?” Ezra asked, looking into the man’s dilated pupils.“There were gray wolves…and then there were black bears!” the scout answered, turning his face away and cowering in fear. “We were attacked by vipers and trampled by bulls. There were griffins and Razor-tailed Scorpions too!""This one has clearly lost his marbles. We need to get him to the shrine and le

Aurelia left for Racinta at once, but instead of flying, she chose to ride a black stallion to avoid getting spotted by the wyverns and dragons prowling the skies.Ezra wanted to clear the way to Cekunia as soon as possible since it was the first city on their list of targets. However, the reports from the scouts made it clear that they needed to exercise caution. Before heading out of Magaravia, Ezra decided to give his next orders as the commander of the allied forces. He immediately called for High Mage Ignacious and Overlord Dojing Wu.“The reports are alarming. The necromancers have their troops posted at every major checkpoint. We need to consolidate and fortify our newly captured territories first. If we go on the offensive now, there is a good chance the undead will try to organize another raid on our forward bases,” he said.Dojing Wu had fought plenty of wars against other Overlords as well as the barbaric hill tribes from the snowy north. It had been a long time since Dojing Wu had led his fliers into enemy territory at night. But the darkness suited them well since Griffins were predatory hybrids and had excellent night vision. As far as the Sea Dragon was concerned, its emerald-green eyes could detect the slightest changes in temperature and spot enemies from miles away. But the darkness also empowered the undead and their infernal legions. As the influence of dark magic grew stronger at night, the ones raised from their graves became more ferocious, and some even gained new abilities.Dojing Wu flew across the Great Plains, keeping his eyes open for any sign of trouble. Each Tower of Corruption was a withered branch on the tree of undeath, connected to the abyssal realm by threats of darkness. Any attack on either of them resonated across the undead legion, alerting them instantly.Dojing Wu realized this a little too late, but once he figured it out, he understood he had to sever the tower’s connection with the abyss, or the reinforcements would never stop.As the Infernal Wyverns and Necro Bats swarmed in from all sides, Dojing Wu summoned his Thunder Spear and hurled it at the Tower of Corruption. He was hoping it would be able to destroy the Dark Crystal in one shot, but as the lightning bolt streaked across the sky, a dark barrier encased the gem atop the tower, absorbing the attack.“Keep the undead fliers at bay. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is th

It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding? Ezra was so focused on stopping Malodor’s demonic spell that he had forgotten all about the hydra. But now that the monster had emerged from its dark lair, there was no way forward without slaying it first.“I sure am glad we aren’t fighting it inside its underwater cave,” Marlin whispered in his cold voice, his cursed eye glued to the hydra. “But it’s still going to be one hell of a battle.”The Undead Hydra glared at Ezra, its five vicious heads bobbing up and down as long forked tongues slithered out of its mouths. It was a gigantic monster covered in slimy gray scales and patches of rotting skin infested with maggots.“How the hell is that thing even alive?” Ezra questioned, unable to comprehend how this monstrosity was still standing even though its rotting flesh was covered in thousands of open wounds and deep scars.“You know they call it an Undead Hydra for a reason,” Marlin whispered back. “I am quite sure Malodor resurrected a dead hydra with his dark magic and cursed it to
