When Ezra had set out with Tanya, he had plenty of things on his mind, but running into the Bleeding Roses was something completely unexpected. It was as if fate had guided him to this hideout and pointed him in the right direction.

The letter Ezra had retrieved from Madam Moonfrey hinted at a strong connection between the Bleeding Roses and the loyalists. However, the elusive noble at the helm of affairs still remained a mystery along with his secret plans.

But now that Ezra had found out about the prostitution racket, he could feel he was close to unraveling their secrets.

The token Ezra had just pocketed was marked with the initials L.H. and had the numbers 0230 hyphenated with it. Together, they identified the name of the customer as well as the appointed time.

Ezra pulled out his silver pocket watch and glanced at the time. It was still a quarter past one and the minutes were crawling by a lot more sluggishly than he would have liked. He still had plenty of time to prepare for his

Once the sounds in the hallway had ceased and the place had slumbered back into silence, Ezra quietly slid the door open and slipped outside. The cloaking spell kept him safe from watchful eyes as he walked down the narrow corridor flanked by rooms on each side.Ezra could hear muffled moans and peals of ecstatic laughter coming from the adjoining rooms. They were occasionally interspersed with heavy groans and excited shouts. He could tell the pleasure house had plenty of other customers tonight. As Ezra continued walking down the corridor, one thing puzzled him. He could not understand why Madam Moonfrey would allow a young vice lieutenant to have fun with her girls. His thoughts went back to that day when she had caught a guard collecting bribes from the poor folk of Ashton Alley and given him a sound thrashing.Ezra wondered if Holmes was the only city guard who had been invited to the pleasure house or if there were others like him. To confirm his doubts, he peeped through one of

The conversation between Eva and the captain of the City Guards made it perfectly clear that Duke Carrington was no longer loyal to King Reginald, and his show of allegiance to the throne was only an act to fool the other nobles. However, the evidence was still too inconclusive for Ezra to suspect the other loyalists. It remained uncertain whether Marquis Desmond and his men were being manipulated by the duke or if they too were involved in the whole conspiracy.Ezra knew he could not trust the loyalists, but the stakes just went up as he discovered Duke Carrington was using Madam Moonfrey’s connections to buy the City Guards. As Ezra continued eavesdropping, the conversation became more interesting. So far, he had only figured out a part of the duke’s plans, but Eva spilled the remaining details in no time.“Our most honored patron, Duke Carrington, has everything planned to the letter. You need not fret about anything at all, my captain,” she spoke coaxingly while running the back o

Duke Carrington was playing a dangerous game, but he knew the king was weak, leaving the throne vulnerable. Valaria lacked a strong leader, and the commoners knew this as well. This created the perfect chance for the duke to dethrone the weak king and wear the royal crown. The only thing the duke wasn’t expecting was outside interference, and Ezra wanted to strike from the shadows and foil his plans before he could vie for the throne. As the discussion drew to a close, Ezra excused himself and ventured into the gloomy night, his destination known only to Marlin.“Care to explain what’s going on in your head?” the old Gunsmith asked, his voice rife with concern.“I need allies. This isn’t a fight I can win alone. Politics is beyond me,” Ezra replied as he flew across the city and landed right in front of the Tower of Justice. “Duke Carrington has the Bleeding Roses in his pockets, and the only ones who can foil their plans are the Black Nightshades.”“You do realize they have no allegi

And his promise was all Ezra had to go by in these desperate times. With Duke Carrington and his accomplices conspiring against the crown, only the Black Nightshades could tip the scales and keep the conspirators in check. But for now, Ezra felt relieved knowing he had bought some time for the king and his allies. “Five days is not enough time to win Princess Aleena’s trust and convince the king to step down. Are you sure this was a good idea?” Marlin asked.Ezra took a deep breath, stepping perilously close to the ledge, and replied, “It was the best idea I could come up with. Besides, at least we will have one less enemy to worry about.”When Ezra returned to their mansion in Verdant Gardens, Tanya and Count Gressil beamed in with their ques

Esmeralda’s sudden arrival caused quite a bit of commotion since she brought news of Duke Carrington’s upcoming visit. Servius immediately instructed the Royal Guards to prepare a formal escort and ordered the attendants to prepare the banquet table.Though Esmeralda had been sent here with the express purpose of announcing the duke’s visit, her thoughts wandered off at the sight of the two hooded guests.“It’s Lord Nazarus and Lady Nixia, is it?” she asked in a tone feigning innocence, but Ezra knew she had already discovered who they were and was merely toying with them. Before Ezra could get ahead of himself and stir trouble, Tanya clasped his hand and shook her head, motioning him to stay calm. Instead of letting him engage the enchantress, she took it upon herself.“I believe we’ve met before, Esmeralda, wasn’t it?” she asked, turning around. Esmeralda smiled gleefully, her face with a peculiar excitement, and bowed. “I am honored by your remembrance. So, are you here to meet Hi

But, despite her harsh words, deep down in her heart, she was secretly praying for their success.Queen Guinevere had spent almost half a decade confined in a room on top of the Celestial Tower, separated from the whole kingdom. Aleena still remembered her mother’s loving touch and her tender embrace, but the whole kingdom seemed to have forgotten the kindness of the queen. Aleena’s eyes widened with horror as she felt the overbearing weight of Tanya’s words on her drooping shoulders. Her heartbeat quickened, and a cold shiver ran down her spine, making her fingers tremble. “What’s a blood curse? And who would curse my mother?” she asked in a quivering voice, her lips pale and dry.Tanya pointed her open right palm at the wailing queen and whispered in a mellow voice, “Let your troubled mind find peace in Ishani’s care as the stars find shelter in the lap of the darkling sky. Let your worries be eased by the grace of the comforting maiden.”As soon as she uttered those words the queen’s voice became muffled and her threats turned to mumbling noises. Her eyes became heavy with sleep and she slowly eased into her bed, her head laid onto the downy pillow.“What did you do to her?” Aleena asked in an anxious tone.Tanya looked away from the sleeping queen and replied, “I gave her the rest she needs. Facing a vampire was hard enough for even the most skilled Gunners, but doing it without any magic was a nearly impossible task. Ezra wanted to believe the old vampire sealed inside the catacombs had passed away peacefully after all these years, but he knew it was only wishful thinking.“Why can’t we ask Glenn about this curse? I’m sure he can do something about it,” Ezra whispered in Tanya’s ear.But she shook her head. “Blood Mages cannot lift curses. If anything, his interference will only make it worse. Besides, if we bring him here, it would expose his identity and quite possibly get him executed.”Hearing Tanya’s explanation, Ezra backed away and turned to Aleena. “Are you sure there aren’t any other entrances to this catacomb?”“All other entrances were sealed decades ago, and I don’t even know where they were. I only know the blackwater lake has a secret entrance through it,” she replied.Ezra nodded. “Alright, I will need some time to prepare. But I promise we will get your mo

It was my fault for allowing him to lead the charge all alone,” Marquis Desmond responded, his eyes still glued to the bloodstained patch of withered grass where his friend had breathed his last.“They even swallowed the bodies,” one of the paladins mumbled anxiously. The fear soon spread through their ranks, and the rest of the troops became increasingly agitate

  • Bloodbath on the battlefield

Corrupted Slashers stood at the top of the necrophagic hierarchy, and despite being similar to ghouls, they were driven by wild hunger and often could not differentiate between friends and foes.A single Slasher could slaughter an entire village, and only trained Gunners could handle a Slasher prowling among a pack of ghouls. However, these undead monstrosities were rarely found in the open and disliked hunting in groups.Strangely enough, Marquis Desmond could already count fifteen Slashers hiding in the shadows. It was a bizarre occurrence, one that posed a bigger threat than a horde of ghouls."There is too many of them," Marquis Sullivan whispered, furrowing his brow. "They must have been summoned by that necromancer to guard this valley.""Well, Lady Aurelia did say it wasn't going to be a walk in the park," Marquis Desmond responded.Count Gressil, being the most experienced Gunner, rode to the frontlines and prepared to engage the enemy head-on.“I can handle these bastards. Count Gressil led the Imperial forces through the treacherous valley, cautiously observing the surroundings. The craggy mountains flanking their path watched on like ancient guardians, their ominous cliffs darkening the skyline. The arid path running down the middle was wide enough for troops to pass unhindered, but there was always the danger of being ambushed from the cliffs above. Count Gressil had known this rugged terrain for decades and was no stranger to such tricks. He could sense that the eerie silence pervading the darkness was merely the calm before the storm, and it kept him on his toes.“Never thought I would have to march on Ignar as a foe,” Marquis Sullivan was the first to speak, breathing some comfort into the tense atmosphere. His eyes scanned the cliffs as he continued riding. “I sure am glad we are not fighting elves. Their archers would have picked us off like fish in a barrel from up there.”“We still are sitting ducks until we cross this valley,” Count Gressil r

However, Lorelai’s blood magic had brought the city to its knees in one fell swoop.Despite her unconventional methods, she had succeeded far beyond Malodor’s wildest expectations, and now this great city once known for its values of chivalry and justice was wallowing in darkness, its walls and towers stained with the blood of the innocent.Inside the grand hall of Bloodflame Castle, Lorelai was seated on a bed of blood orchids, surrounded by nine pregnant women bound in dark vines.A clay pot in the middle of the room was gradually filling with bloo

Led by Sir Galahar and his Royal Gunners, the Imperial army had finally arrived at Racinta. The ruined city looked inhospitable, much like the rest of the barren lands around it, but it was much safer to be camping inside Racinta, than resting in the open while the undead were howling in the dark. The dome of holy light shielding the ruined village kept the shadows at bay and allowed the soldiers to finally catch their breaths. They had been marching for two hours now, and even the horses looked tired. But Aurelia knew they had to get moving as soon as possible, or Lorelai could use her blood magic to wreak havoc on them.As the soldiers secured the village and gathered in the middle, Count Gressil lit a bonfire and ordered the men to drink up and recheck their gear.Meanwhile, Sir Galahar instructed two of his most trusted Royal Guards to scout the way ahead and scope out Ignar f

  • Dead men tell no lies

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. • Malodor's Fall

A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is thi

It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding? Show yourself!” Suddenly, a hydra head appeared from the left and sprayed Ezra with dark fumes. He started coughing fit
