While Marquis Desmond had decided to adopt an aggressive approach to counter the Blood Crawlers, Marquis Sullivan had ordered his men to set the barricades around Avondale on fire.

Since the Blood Crawlers had no immunity against elemental attacks, they were afraid of getting burnt, and the flames kept them far away from Avondale’s periphery.

Mahakam, however, did not prove to be so lucky. Marquis Desmond had thrown his cavaliers at the Blood Crawlers without thinking of the repercussions. His impulsive decision had cost him not just his troops, but also put him in a terrifying situation.

Faced with two Blood Crawlers, Marquis Desmond had little choice but to rely on his skills and hope that the rest of the undead horde would not show up at their door while they were fighting.

For a second, Marquis Desmond thought about flying off and launching an aerial assault on the two Blood Crawlers, but the shrill cries of the wyverns circling overhead made him reconsider his decision.

Getting surrounded by the enemy was always a terrible thing, but what made Marquis Desmond’s situation even worse was the fact that he had no cavalry left to defend him.The only troops at Marquis Desmond’s disposal were the archers camping inside the makeshift bunkers. These men were armed with the latest compound crossbows and were excellent marksmen, but they were dealing with more challenging foes this time.Even before Marquis Desmond could give his orders, the archers took their shots, firing upon the enemy. But the steel-tipped bolts missed their marks completely as the resurrected cavaliers dashed across the village, dodging the projectiles like trained assassins.Marquis Desmond fired his rifles, blasting the enemy with magic bullets, but once again, the bloody warriors dashed away, avoiding the attack.Their blinding speed baffled the Marquis and his men. It was as if these resurrected warriors were mere shadows, disappearing and reappearing at will. Even though the bloody

Ezra had already mopped up the Undead Trolls on the beach and cleared the way to Cekunia. Aurelia’s journey, however, took her across a barren moor and brought her to a deserted ruin seventy miles from the capital.Racinta used to be one of the oldest villages in Valaria and was inhabited by groups of barbaric tribes and roving traders from the remotest parts of the country.A hundred years ago, the place was still bustling with life, but a deadly plague killed the inhabitants during one of the harshest winters, and now the village was just a lifeless ruin dotted with thatched huts, derelict granaries, and decrepit wooden shacks. While it was possible to avoid the ruins entirely by going around them, the longer route was fraught with dangers. Racinta was surrounded from all sides by a treacherous bog which often swallowed lost travelers and stray caravans whole if they weren’t careful. Thus, it was much safer for any army to pass straight through the ruins and avoid the deceptive terr

Once Aurelia and Ezra had secured their respective territories, they used two Superior Teleportation Scrolls to arrive at the Brookborrow Intersection, an old crossroad where three major highways converged.Marquis Desmond and Marquis Sullivan joined them shortly afterward, accompanied by their scouts.“Mahakam was attacked by creatures born out of blood magic. My men and I had to fight off two Blood Crawlers and then deal with an army of Crimson Berserkers. Something doesn’t seem right,” Marquis Desmond was the first to begin.Marquis Sullivan joined in the conversation as soon as his friend finished. “Avondale was also in their sights, but I ordered my men to set the barricades ablaze, and that seemed to keep those creatures away. I suppose they are afraid of fire.”“That’s right, most creatures summoned using blood magic are vulnerable to fire as well as sacred incantations,” Aurelia replied. “But it still begs the question, how are they using blood magic? As far as I know, the cult

Barely a few hours ago, everyone was fighting tooth and nail to defend Magaravia, but Ezra’s bold approach reversed the situation completely. He was no longer interested in playing the safe game but wanted to hit the necromancers with everything they had.The only problem was Ezra wasn’t looking to take things slow and focus on one city at a time. His strategy relied on launching a two-pronged attack which would give the cultists no time to formulate a counterattack. However, not everyone was eager to fight two battles at once without even knowing what they were dealing with.Aurelia had already tried dissuading Ezra, but he was obstinate about attacking both cities at the same time and it seemed like even the Goddess herself could not convince him to alter his plans.“I understand that you are not too comfortable with the idea of splitting our forces, so I don’t need anything from you. Take the Imperial Army and the Elementalists. Focus on Ignar while I deal with Malodor’s forces in

Centuries had passed since someone last tried to cast such potent demonic spells. Most mages and sorcerers in this age knew precious little about dark magic, while those who had some knowledge preferred to keep it under wraps.Servius was among the rare few who had read extensively about the dark arts and navigated the depths of demonic sorcery to expand his horizons. However, even with his textual knowledge, he could only tell them the bare minimum.“I think it is best if we speak to someone who is more well-versed in this craft,” he said, acknowledging his own ignorance. “Who?” Aleena asked.Servius moved closer to the princess and whispered a suggestion in her ear, to which she nodded silently.Within a few minutes, Ishani’s High Priestess was summoned to the royal palace and taken straight to the throne room.Servius greeted her cordially, before guiding her to the enchanted mirror. “Our forces need your help. We are dealing with demonic spells,” he said, stepping away. The High

Everyone listened attentively, their eyes focused on the map as Ezra began discussing the plans for the attacks. “Cekunia is the closest city to Magaravia,” he said, circling the port city on the map. “This is where Malodor has been hiding. It is also the last city they captured. Once we manage to liberate it, we probably would not have to another attack on Magaravia.""That's right. The undead presence around the capital was reduced considerably just by clearing those two neighboring villages. I am quite certain that killing a necromancer and liberating his stronghold would deal a crushing blow to their forces,” Servius spoke in his turn.Ezra nodded. “Exactly. Malodor is the oldest necromancer in that group, and I believe he has been leading their forces. With him taken out of the picture, they will lose their edge. Then, we can think about rattling their foundations.”“Since Cekunia is a port city, capturing it would also allow us to reclaim the sea and use the waterways for trans

Ezra parted ways with the group after the meeting concluded and Aurelia bid him farewell with a warm hug, wishing him luck and planting a tender kiss on his cold forehead. However, as Ezra was about to walk out the door, Count Gressil called him back.“If you find my daughter there, let me know. I’ll tear down any damn prison cell keeping her away from me.”As much as Ezra knew the cultists, he was quite sure they would not be keeping Tanya in a dungeon or even a prison cell. Since the Blood Moon was due in two nights, it was an easy guess that they were preparing her for the dark ritual.Just to keep Count Gressil’s troubling thoughts at bay, Ezra decided not to divulge the truth. “You don’t need to worry about Tanya. I love her, and I am going to find her even if I have to search the whole continent.”With those final words, Ezra stormed off and mounted a fresh stallion. Taking the winding shortcut through the barren wheat fields, he cut through the grassy plains and headed for the

Once Ezra was safe under the dome of sacred light, he dismounted from his horse and looked around. Everything seemed quiet now, and there were no undead in sight. However, as Ezra was scanning the area, he spotted a steely gray metallic platform sticking out of the sand. It was a triangular structure with a circular disc embedded in the middle and three magic cores fixed on its three corners.“Is this yours?” Marlin asked, staring at the peculiar object with wide-eyed curiosity.Ezra shook his head. “I don’t even know what that thing is. But it doesn’t look like it belongs to the undead either. It’s far too clean and…sophisticated.”As Ezra was analyzing the triangular platform, it started buzzing, and a circle of vibrant blue light appeared on its surface, illuminating the area in its dim glow.“Teleportation successful!” A squeaky voice exclaimed as a human figure appeared on the platform.Milton stepped out of the blue light, removed the laboratory goggles from his eyes, and took o

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. Each second he held onto the blade it continued draining a portion of his magic power, draining his energy at an alarming rate.Ezra took a deep breath and grabbed th

The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is th

Staring death in the eye had become a habitual hazard for Ezra by now, but his legs froze as he saw the Undead Hydra’s serpentine head inching toward him. “Not tonight!” Ezra tossed a Shock Grenade at the hydra and jumped back. The blast zapped the oversized head, forcing the hydra to pull its snaking neck back into the green mist and disappear once again.Although the Basilisk’s Toxic Cocoon was shielding Ezra from the hydra’s poisonous breath, he could feel his eyes burning from the smoky haze. It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding? Show yourself!” Suddenly, a hydra head appeared from the left and sprayed Ezra with dark fumes. He started coughing fi

  • Hydra's Breath

Ezra was so focused on stopping Malodor’s demonic spell that he had forgotten all about the hydra. But now that the monster had emerged from its dark lair, there was no way forward without slaying it first.“I sure am glad we aren’t fighting it inside its underwater cave,” Marlin whispered in his cold voice, his cursed eye glued to the hydra. “But it’s still going to be one hell of a battle.”The Undead Hydra glared at Ezra, its five vicious heads bobbing up and down as long forked tongues slithered out of its mouths. It was a gigantic monster covered in slimy gray scales and patches of rotting skin infested with maggots.“How the hell is that thing even alive?” Ezra questioned, unable to comprehend how this monstrosity was still standing even though its rotting flesh was covered in thousands of open wounds and deep scars.“You know they call it an Undead Hydra for a reason,” Marlin whispered back. “I am quite sure Malodor resurrected a dead hydra with his dark magic and cursed it to

  • The first confrontation

Cekunia’s walls had been breached, and the undead lurking in the streets had been wiped out with extreme force. A lone Gunner had led the machines through the captured city and marched straight to its heart.Malodor was impressed by Ezra’s unshakeable resolve and great leadership skills. Despite having no support from the Imperial Army or Royal Gunners, he had somehow managed to bring Cekunia to its knees, and now the port city was wide open for assault.“You did well, Lord Ezra. I must confess I never expected you to make it this far,” Malodor’s wispy voice echoed in the darkness as he manifested like a shadow, floating ten feet above the ground, his withered old frame wrapped in loose black robes. “What do you seek, my Lord? And I mean, what do you really seek?” he whispered in a cold voice, staring into Ezra’s soul.“I am here for Tanya,” Ezra replied bluntly, glaring right back at the levitating necromancer.Malodor heaved an exhausted sigh and replied softly, “That girl belongs t

Ezra downed a magic restoration potion and topped off with an elemental affinity potion before heading in through the destroyed wall. The Blademaster Sentries had already gone ahead and engaged the Skeletal Warriors protecting the gate. When Ezra entered Cekunia with the rest of his troops, he was shocked to see how the undead had transformed the port city and turned it into a hellscape tainted with rot and corruption. The huts and cottages were covered in black tar, and the small shacks had been demolished to create room for bone totems that went deep into the ground and tainted the city with their malign influence. The city’s only cemetery had been plundered and razed to the ground, and the feral ghouls feasting on the rotten remains of the dead had turned it into a bloody boneyard.“Damn…This was my mother’s city. This is where she was raised and educated. I remember Aurelia telling me that mother loved watching the ships sail by on a starless night. But they destroyed everything.

  • All becomes flesh

Marching straight into the heart of an undead city did not seem like the most prudent thing, even though Ezra had an army of Sentry Bots at his back, and Marlin was quick to dissuade him.“You don’t even know what’s on the other side. It’s not a smart idea to climb into that dark hole without a plan.”Ezra brushed off his words of caution with a dismissive shrug. “It doesn’t matter what’s on the other side. I can handle it.”But before Ezra could invade the city with his forces, a dirty green liquid oozed out of the wall and the ridges on its surface started throbbing spasmodically. A repulsive belching noise smothered the silence as the ruptured portion of the wall regurgitated half-eaten bones and wads of flesh which filled the gap, closing the hole.Ezra watched in disgust as the wall convulsed like a feverish pig that was about to vomit its last meal all over the haystacks. The sight of the wall reforming with the remains of the dead made Ezra retch hard, and he had to close his
