Ezra rushed at the Skeletal Warriors and peppered them with Fireshot bullets. The mini explosions spewed magma all over their bones, shattering their ribs and turning them to ash.

Although the Skeletal Warriors were highly resistant to fire due to the absence of a fleshy covering, the magma eruptions were hot enough to even melt bone and steel.

Ezra continued firing without stopping, his enchanted bullets slowly thinning the horde. Since his magic power had peaked at 200% percent he did not have to worry about drinking potions as he could fire around 60 enchanted bullets before draining his magic power completely.

While Ezra dealt with the dazed skeletons, Aurelia focused on the Slasher. She started off with Radiant Glory bullets and her enchanted nine-shot revolver empowered them with each new shot.

Beams of golden light shot out from the barrel of her gun, pushing back the shadows and illuminating the surroundings. As they struck the Slasher, it tried to shield its vitals with i

Aurelia looked around her as a hoarse cackle echoed in the darkness. The Night Walker was nearby, but the blinding fog made it impossible to see anything through its shadowy veil. “Ezra! The Night Walker is close. Be on your guard!” she shouted to caution Ezra. “Where are you?” Ezra shouted back and tried to wade through the foggy cover to find his sister, but the inky darkness made it difficult to see anything. Even though Aurelia was only standing a few paces away, Ezra had lost all sense of direction in that darkness and wandered off like a lost lamb. “This does not bode well. Why did it have to be a Night Walker?” Marlin asked in a trembling whisper. Although the Gunsmith wasn’t afraid of monsters and mages, the undead always made him feel uneasy. He had already suffered enough at the hands of ghouls when the king’s court mages had tricked him and thrown him into an infested cave, and he did not want to relive his traumatic past. “Why would your dear father even send you out

Ezra had heard about necromancers raising the dead from their graves and even twisting corpses with dark magic to turn them into necrophages. However, he had never read about wild animals being transformed into the undead. The Night Walker had not only killed the brown bear but corrupted its body as well. Its flesh was now merely a husk of its former self, and the creature ambling toward them was nothing more than a walking corpse. However, the surprising thing was that the bear’s flesh had not started decomposing, and the only signs of decay were visible on its furry hide. Apart from that, the bear looked to be in great condition for a walking dead. As Ezra and Aurelia prepared their weapons, distant growls reached their ears. Dozens of blood-red eyes stared at them from the darkness, surrounding the village from all sides. Undead direwolves killed by the Night Walker joined the fray, ready to do their master’s bidding. They looked pale, and their fur was stained with blood, but

The stench of death lingered in the air, but not even maggots dared to touch the villagers killed by the undead. Even the vultures in the sky avoided flying over the village. It was almost as if they could sense the suffering of the deceased. While Ezra went from hut to hut to check for any useful items, Aurelia made her way to the pit where the half-eaten corpses of the villagers had been dumped along with many animal carcasses. “May your souls rest in peace. You all deserve a proper funeral, but I am afraid there is no one left to perform your last rights. All I can do is offer my humble prayers and hope you find relief in the afterlife,” she whispered, joining her hands in prayer. Even though the rotting stench wafting from the pit was unbearable, Aurelia continued praying for several minutes before finally moving away and tossing two flaming bottles into the pit. As the fire spread across the pit, the flame feasted on the decaying bodies, licking them with its searing tongue an

The boy who had been hailed as a prodigy in his early years had yet again become tangled with the threads of fate and awakened an old prophecy. “I have never seen anything like this before. This weapon isn’t a gun. It cannot be,” Marlin remarked as he analyzed the blueprint spread atop the altar. “The one who designed this wasn’t trying to create a firearm. This is entirely different. It’s shaped almost like a dragon’s gullet. There is no way this thing can shoot bullets.” “I don’t think he designed this weapon to fight other gunners. Maybe this was created to deal with the undead,” Ezra replied, taking a good look at the strange blueprint before him. “But how did I become a part of this prophecy? What has this got to do with me?” Even Marlin was surprised to learn that his fellow Gunsmith had kept a blueprint hidden for Ezra. There was no way to dismiss it as a coincidence anymore since Ezra had seen the village in his visions, and the pillar’s magic seal was awakened by his touch.

When Ezra and Aurelia returned to Dragon Claw's guild house, the Elders had gathered not just the Gunners, but the other important dignitaries as well. Even Lord Wilhelm was there along with his attendant. Iraka and Jasenki too were back from their mission. “What news do you bring?” Abigor asked as Ezra and Aurelia walked into the council room. “It is bad. We encountered a Night Walker out there. It was trying to perform a dark ritual to resurrect the dead and turn them into walking corpses,” Aurelia replied. “We had to burn the whole village down to prevent a repeat of the incident.” “That sounds a bit excessive, don’t you think?” Lord Cornelius asked, raising his eyebrows. “It is always better to be safe than sorry,” Flavius replied on their behalf. He then turned to look at Ezra. “Were you able to find any clues which might point us in the direction of the necromancers?” Ezra shook his head. “Nothing. The Night Walker was the one leading the undead horde.” Lord Sebastian ask

Once the other Gunners left, Lord Sebastian headed out with Abigor to inspect Aranor’s defense and check on the town guards. With the election coming up shortly, he wanted to spend more time with the common people and understand their hardships and grievances to serve them better in the future. Since the news of Zepheroth’s awakening had already spread like wildfire, the townsfolk were already beginning to doubt the Goddess, and many were even suggesting that they should leave Aranor and find safety behind the walls of the capital. The town guards had also started panicking because they were only used to fighting bandits and wild animals. However, none of them imagined they would be asked to defend this little town against the undead. Being a commoner belonging to the lower rungs of society, Abigor had been able to interact freely with the townsfolk and learn more about their opinions and this helped Lord Sebastian understand whether he was walking on the right path. If the electio

Ezra knew a blueprint that had been hidden for so many years would help him get his hands on a powerful new weapon. But for that, he needed to acquire two more components. “Where do I find these?” Ezra questioned Marlin, hoping the Gunsmith would have a better idea about gun components. But Marlin was as perplexed as him. “Like I said before; this blueprint isn’t for a conventional gun. I do not think just any component would fit with this weapon. You might need to acquire very specific parts designed especially for this particular blueprint.” “That’s not very helpful at all,” Ezra replied with a disappointed look on his face. He was so close to acquiring a powerful new weapon, yet its two parts were still not in his possession, and he had no idea where to look for them. Marlin peered at the blueprint for a good while and suddenly a thought occurred to him. “Where is the component you retrieved from that shrine? Show it to me.” Ezra retrieved the customized steel nozzle from his i

The dim light of the crescent moon filtered through the cloud cover and illuminated the town with a dim glow. Ishani’s shrine lay secluded in partial darkness, with its tinted glass windows glimmering as the moonlight washed its façade at uncertain intervals. The guards stationed outside the shrine had been hand-picked by Lord Sebastian himself, and were actively patrolling the area to keep trespassers at bay. They weren’t like those piggish sentries who gobbled gluttonous meals after dark and fell asleep as soon as the clock struck one. Ezra knew he had to be careful, or else he risked creating a bigger mess than he had ever been in. Attempting to sneak into the shrine would raise several questions about his intentions, and if Lord Wilhelm and the others found out, they would not miss the chance to drag his family name through the dirt and fling accusations at all the Romanovs. “It feels like you are stealing from your own house,” Marlin whispered as Ezra slunk behind a tamarind

Led by Sir Galahar and his Royal Gunners, the Imperial army had finally arrived at Racinta. The ruined city looked inhospitable, much like the rest of the barren lands around it, but it was much safer to be camping inside Racinta, than resting in the open while the undead were howling in the dark. The dome of holy light shielding the ruined village kept the shadows at bay and allowed the soldiers to finally catch their breaths. They had been marching for two hours now, and even the horses looked tired. But Aurelia knew they had to get moving as soon as possible, or Lorelai could use her blood magic to wreak havoc on them.As the soldiers secured the village and gathered in the middle, Count Gressil lit a bonfire and ordered the men to drink up and recheck their gear.Meanwhile, Sir Galahar instructed two of his most trusted Royal Guards to scout the way ahead and scope out Ignar

  • Dead men tell no lies

Ezra’s medallion emitted a faint green light, and a cloud of darkness gushed out of its core, taking the shape of a humanoid entity. The Tainted Djinn emerged from the shadows, holding a mystic lantern dangling from rusty iron shackles.“How may I serve you, master?” It asked, bowing its hooded head in submission.Ezra pointed at Malodor’s corpse and replied, “I need to talk to him. Reckon you can arrange a meeting?”“Of course, master. Your wish is my command,” the Djinn replied before moving across the room like a shadow and hovering over Malodor’s lifeless body. It uttered an archaic incantation in its raspy voice and lowered the mystic lantern, allowing its pale green light to illuminate the necromancer’s pale white face.Using its Dark Rite ability, the Tainted Djinn summoned Malodor’s soul before Ezra, binding it to the mystic lantern for a few fleeting seconds.A ghastly gray apparition materialized in front of Ezra, and the air turned cold and arid.“Welcome back, Malodor. • Malodor's Fall

A Gunner with a sword was a rare sight, but Lord Sebastian had trained Ezra to use short swords and sabers at an early age. He wasn’t the best when it came to melee weapons, but the situation left him with little choice.“Please guide my hand, Goddess,” Ezra uttered a faint prayer to the Goddess of knowledge before reaching out for the flaming longsword. As Ezra grabbed its handle and wrapped his fingers around the hilt, the flames rose higher, and the runes carved on its surface pulsed with divine energy. This wasn’t just any enchanted sword, it was one of the five divine weapons wielded by the immortal deities. And right now, this blade had chosen Ezra as its new owner.[Yolen’s Blade equipped successfully!][Magic Power consumed: 5000%!]Just equipping the sword drained Ezra’s magic power by half, but that wasn’t all. Each second he held onto the blade it continued draining a portion of his magic power, draining his energy at an alarming rate.Ezra took a deep breath and grabbed th

  • An ever-evolving enemy

The Undead Hydra’s incredible regenerative ability amplified Ezra’s problems, leaving him in a precarious situation. In the sky above, the Crimson Maw was rapidly taking shape, forming itself into a demonic head, and Malodor was still far out of his reach.Realizing that he needed to deal with the hydra as quickly as possible, Ezra reloaded his enchanted minigun with Flame Burst Bullets and fired again, concentrating on the monster’s bloated belly.A blistering volley of fiery explosions lit up the hydra as the flaming rounds seared its dark hide, but the projectiles did not manage to punch through its toughened scales.Ezra rotated the weapon, targeting the softer spots on the hydra’s chest. This time, he succeeded in burning a patch of rotten flesh and leaving a deep scar on the monster’s body. But despite being peppered with a thousand rounds, the hydra refused to go down. Its skin molted, regrowing a new patch of flesh covered with a hardened layer of scales.“What the hell is th

Staring death in the eye had become a habitual hazard for Ezra by now, but his legs froze as he saw the Undead Hydra’s serpentine head inching toward him. “Not tonight!” Ezra tossed a Shock Grenade at the hydra and jumped back. The blast zapped the oversized head, forcing the hydra to pull its snaking neck back into the green mist and disappear once again.Although the Basilisk’s Toxic Cocoon was shielding Ezra from the hydra’s poisonous breath, he could feel his eyes burning from the smoky haze. It was as if someone had sprayed pepper on his face, and each time he squeezed his eyelids, tears trickled down his face, stinging his skin like needles.Dizzy and disoriented, Ezra looked around frantically, scanning his surroundings for any hint of movement. But everything seemed as still as death, and the hissing noises had ceased as well.“Where the hell are you hiding? Show yourself!” Suddenly, a hydra head appeared from the left and sprayed Ezra with dark fumes. He started coughing fi

  • Hydra's Breath

Ezra was so focused on stopping Malodor’s demonic spell that he had forgotten all about the hydra. But now that the monster had emerged from its dark lair, there was no way forward without slaying it first.“I sure am glad we aren’t fighting it inside its underwater cave,” Marlin whispered in his cold voice, his cursed eye glued to the hydra. “But it’s still going to be one hell of a battle.”The Undead Hydra glared at Ezra, its five vicious heads bobbing up and down as long forked tongues slithered out of its mouths. It was a gigantic monster covered in slimy gray scales and patches of rotting skin infested with maggots.“How the hell is that thing even alive?” Ezra questioned, unable to comprehend how this monstrosity was still standing even though its rotting flesh was covered in thousands of open wounds and deep scars.“You know they call it an Undead Hydra for a reason,” Marlin whispered back. “I am quite sure Malodor resurrected a dead hydra with his dark magic and cursed it to

  • The first confrontation

Cekunia’s walls had been breached, and the undead lurking in the streets had been wiped out with extreme force. A lone Gunner had led the machines through the captured city and marched straight to its heart.Malodor was impressed by Ezra’s unshakeable resolve and great leadership skills. Despite having no support from the Imperial Army or Royal Gunners, he had somehow managed to bring Cekunia to its knees, and now the port city was wide open for assault.“You did well, Lord Ezra. I must confess I never expected you to make it this far,” Malodor’s wispy voice echoed in the darkness as he manifested like a shadow, floating ten feet above the ground, his withered old frame wrapped in loose black robes. “What do you seek, my Lord? And I mean, what do you really seek?” he whispered in a cold voice, staring into Ezra’s soul.“I am here for Tanya,” Ezra replied bluntly, glaring right back at the levitating necromancer.Malodor heaved an exhausted sigh and replied softly, “That girl belongs t

  • Malodor's corrupted stronghold

Ezra downed a magic restoration potion and topped off with an elemental affinity potion before heading in through the destroyed wall. The Blademaster Sentries had already gone ahead and engaged the Skeletal Warriors protecting the gate. When Ezra entered Cekunia with the rest of his troops, he was shocked to see how the undead had transformed the port city and turned it into a hellscape tainted with rot and corruption. The huts and cottages were covered in black tar, and the small shacks had been demolished to create room for bone totems that went deep into the ground and tainted the city with their malign influence. The city’s only cemetery had been plundered and razed to the ground, and the feral ghouls feasting on the rotten remains of the dead had turned it into a bloody boneyard.“Damn…This was my mother’s city. This is where she was raised and educated. I remember Aurelia telling me that mother loved watching the ships sail by on a starless night. But they destroyed everything.

  • All becomes flesh

Marching straight into the heart of an undead city did not seem like the most prudent thing, even though Ezra had an army of Sentry Bots at his back, and Marlin was quick to dissuade him.“You don’t even know what’s on the other side. It’s not a smart idea to climb into that dark hole without a plan.”Ezra brushed off his words of caution with a dismissive shrug. “It doesn’t matter what’s on the other side. I can handle it.”But before Ezra could invade the city with his forces, a dirty green liquid oozed out of the wall and the ridges on its surface started throbbing spasmodically. A repulsive belching noise smothered the silence as the ruptured portion of the wall regurgitated half-eaten bones and wads of flesh which filled the gap, closing the hole.Ezra watched in disgust as the wall convulsed like a feverish pig that was about to vomit its last meal all over the haystacks. The sight of the wall reforming with the remains of the dead made Ezra retch hard, and he had to close his
