The following morning, the people of Aranor gathered in the town square to cast their votes and elect the new mayor.

It was a diverse multitude consisting of humans, merfolk, dwarves, elves, and even a few woodland nymphs.

Apart from the commoners, the four noble houses were also present there.

Lord Cornelius and his wife were joined by the Du Vaine household whose head, Lord Arnold Du Vaine still held power over the mayor’s office for now.

Lord Wilhelm and his son Jasenki arrived shortly, accompanied by the other members of their house consisting of his second wife, Lady Mariana, and her younger son, Kyson Morelis.

The Romanovs were the last to arrive, but they were missing one member. Although the other nobles did not mind Ramel’s absence, the commoners were eagerly waiting for their favored knight to make an appearance.

“Where’s Sir Ramel?” one of the young lads asked.

“Maybe he is still busy with his training,” another piped.

“He never trains alone and I haven’t seen him in a whi

Currently, Lord Sebastian was in the lead with sixty votes while Lord Wilhelm trailed with forty. However, Aranor’s commoners consisting of both humans and non-humans could alter the results due to their superior numbers. The town had a modest population of ninety adult humans and forty adult non-humans, including the hybrids. This brought the total number of voters to one hundred and thirty, keeping the elections fair and balanced. After the first phase of the voting came to an end, the commoners dispersed to grab refreshments and discuss things with their favored political groups before making their minds up.Aurelia and Ezra seemed confident about a smooth victory since Lord Sebastian had the over

As the three noble families met in the middle of the town square, things quickly became tense, and the townsfolk started chattering among themselves.“We don’t remember inviting you. Surely, as residents of Stonewell City, you have no role to play in today’s election,” Aurelia said.Lord Lucius smiled at her words and straightened his tie. “But my Lady, you forget that I am a businessman, and this town presents quite an attractive business opportunity. I am not here to make friends. I am here to support Lord Wilhelm and his family.”“You have no business interfering in this election,” Aurelia retorted. “You may be a Vice Patriarch of Dragon Claw, but you are still not welcome to influence the results of the general election.”Lord Lucius ignored Aurelia’s remarks and turned to look at Ezra. “I am not here to interfere in the elections. However, a lot had changed over the past few weeks.Ezra had impressed the miners by slaying the Heragore hiding in the Kasari mines and earned the respect of the dwarves. And this was only the beginning of his heroic endeavors.By slaying the undead Behemoth and rescuing Count Gressil’s only daughter, Lady Tanya, Ezra had caught the attention of not only the commoners but the most aff

Lord Cornelius put his finger on the trigger and started counting aloud so that everyone standing there could hear the timer.“Five….four….three….two….one!”On the count of one, he pulled the trigger, firing a magic round into the sky.Bang! As soon as they heard the gunshot, Ezra and Jasenki spun around and turned to face each other. Jasenki was a little slow to react, allowing Ezra to score the first shot. Ezra fired his enchanted six-shot revolver, greeting his rival with a hail of normal bullets.“Is that the best you got?” Jasenki mocked as he activated his Bulletproof Armor skill to block the bullets. “Come on, Ezra! Try again! Surely you can do better!”Ezra reloaded his revolver with magic rounds and unleashed six quick shots in Jasenki’s direction. The pale blue barrier erected in front of Jasenki buzzed and distorted as the magic rounds struck its mid-section. But Jasenki clenched his fist, pooling all his magic energy into his arm to fortify the shield.Once more, Ezra’s s

Its muzzle flashed as it reached its magic threshold, and he fired without a second thought.A massive fireball the size of a melon was launched in Ezra’s direction. “Get down!” Lord Cornelius shouted before ducking like a timid hare. The rest of the crowd shrieked and scampered to safety.Swoosh! As the magic fireball struck Ezra, it erupted into flames, spewing embers in every direction and engulfing him in dense black smoke.“Ezra!” Lord Sebastian shouted.Aurelia could not hold back any longer and rushed to her brother’s aid, but Lord Cornelius got in her way, stopping her in her tracks.“Let me go! Get out of my way!” she yelled at the top of her lungs.Lord Cornelius spread his arms apart and shook his head. “I am sorry, but I cannot let you do that. No one is allowed to interrupt the duel. Ezra’s demands stunned the Rodels, shocking them into silence. Ten thousand Sovereigns was no small amount even for a factory owner, and on top of that, Ezra had also asked for the motor wagon which had cost Lord Lucius well over five thousand Sovereigns. What was even more unbearable was the humiliating idea of walking all the way back to Stonewell City like desperate commoners. It was an affront to their pride and an insult to their family legacy.“We are not peasants,” Lord Lucius muttered, clenching his fist and glaring at Ezra. “You cannot treat us as if we were commoners. Your poor town should be grateful for my visit!”“You should be grateful if I let you walk out of here with your clothes still on your back,” Ezra whispered back in a cold voice, his eyes staring into Lord Lucius’. “Your power and your money mean nothing here. But now, Valaria had adopted a pseudo-democratic form of government. Even though the nobles retained their positions, the administrative officials were now chosen through elections. However, since the nobility still held on to their lands and titles, they exercised considerable power over the cities and towns, and not even the mayors and ministers had the authority to pass new regulations and decrees without consult

Alas, his mother never got the chance to see him grow up,” a feminine voice stated wistfully. “The question remains, what must we do with him now?” the male voice questioned.“I think it is time to leave the choice in his hands,” a second feminine voice spoke aloud. “Wake up, my dear child. Your mortal troubles cannot touch you here. Wake up and choose.”Groggy and disoriented, Ezra slowly parted his eyelids and immediately squinted as the bright white light flooding the room smarted his eyes. “The hour of darkness descends upon this world like a shroud, and the bleeding moon beckons the Lord of Decay to reclaim his lost domain. Lying in a bloody puddle on the black marble floor, he parted his droopy eyelids and saw Lord Wilhelm standing behind the altar and Lady Lillian facing him on the other side.Though Tanya’s face was hidden from view, Ezra could see her supple white fingers tingling as her delicate arm dangled from the stone altar. She was still alive, but Lord Wilhelm was already anointing the ceremonial dagger forged from infernal obsidian and preparing to plunge it into her heart.“You…cannot do it. You need the crimson moon to…summon Zepheroth,” Ezra said, fighting the pain.“The hour of our Lord is nigh. And all celestials shall obey his will,” Lord Wilhelm continued cha

The choking odor brought tears to his eyes, but he pushed on through the vaporous veil. The Spectral Beholder led Ezra to a small patch of dry land surrounded by rotting oak trees. As he stepped onto the elevated mound, he spotted a fiery blue orb floating in the distance.Ten more orbs appeared out of thin air, floating through the foggy darkness. At first glance, they looked like glowing power crystals, but as Ezra took a closer look, he realized these orbs weren’t floating crystals or fireflies, but Elven Wisps. The Elven Wisps were unique spectral entities only found in the Violet Everglades. • Lady of the Swamp

A weary traveler lost inside the Violet Everglades was an easy prey for the creatures of the dark, and Ezra had just encountered one such nefarious entity. But instead of fear, his eyes lit up with a strange hopefulness.“You called out to me in Tanya’s voice, so you must have seen her passing through. Point me toward the Fountain of Chaos, and I won’t kill you,” he spoke in a cold, emotionless voice, without even turning to look at the creature creeping toward him.The creature laughed at his words and rushed through the darkness, moving like a shadow to play with his mind. Her voice echoed from different directions as she disappeared like smoke and danced around Ezra.“You are in my home, youngling. The dark ones told me you’d be coming,” she cackled. “But you won’t be walking out alive. So, forget about your friend and save yourself if you can!”As Ezra stood there motionless, a howling shadow rushed past him and gathered on a dry patch of grass overgrown with violet tulips that glo

  • Swamped!

The upturned black carriage slowly sinking in the mud, had turned into a feasting ground for the necrophages prowling nearby. But these slimy creatures neither resembled Ghouls nor Drekavacs. At first glance, it was easy to mistake them for Merfolk due to their scaly bodies and fish-like gills. However, their sharp black claws and long white fangs gave away their real nature.About thirteen of them were gathered around the carriage, fighting for the best share of the food and tearing out lumps of flesh from the dead horses lying in the mud. Seeing no human bodies around, Ezra concluded the cultists must have ditched the carriage upon entering the swamp and proceeded on foot from this point onward.“The cultists are already here. We should be careful,” Ezra cautioned the Count as he slid out of the saddle and dismounted from his horse. It was far too dangerous to ride any animal into the swamp, leaving him with no choice but to walk.“We are losing time here. Let’s go in and kill thos

Chaos magic flows in its murky depths, twisting everything it touches and distorting the surroundings. Aberrations and magical anomalies are as common in the Everglades as trees in a forest. It is not wise to willingly venture into that death trap.”“The cultists have Tanya, and they are going to sacrifice her at the Fountain of Chaos. I don’t care about the dangers!” Count Gressil retorted, his fatherly feelings pushing all thoughts of caution out of his mind. But Flavius, being a distant guest, could look at things objectively without getting overwhelmed by his emotions. But all he managed to get his hands on was a pile of disjointed bones buried amidst the heap.“God, how I wish you were here with me, Marlin. I could really use your help.”The thought of summoning Vorus’ departed soul to this mortal plane crossed Ezra’s mind for a moment, but as he looked at his shattered Mystic Lamp medallion, he remembered the necromancer had destroyed his old relic, vanquishing the Tainted Djinn.“Damn it, Vorus. You are a pain in the behind even after your death!” Ezra clenched his fists, anger, and frustration surging in his heart. Even after killing all three necromancers, he had learned nothing about Tanya’s whereabouts. As Ezra’s pocket watch ticked the minutes away, his heart raced faster and faster. He knew he barely had a couple of hours to locate Tanya and free her before the other cultists sacrificed her.The sound of heavy footsteps m
