Ezra's expression soured as he contemplated his choices. He knew he could trust Tanya with his secret identity, but he wasn't sure about Marquis Desmond and the others.

“Spending the day with Marquis Desmond and his family will help us win their trust and learn about his political ambitions.” Tanya’s voice prodded Ezra, interrupting his thoughts.

His initial thought was to devise an excuse to postpone the meeting. But he knew it would only delay the inevitable and raise more questions.

Realizing there was no way out of this mess, Ezra decided to play along. “I have heard about the dueling tournament. But I have never been there. When is the next round?”

“It’s scheduled to be held tomorrow and my sources have informed me that Marquis Desmond’s son is among the duelists,” Count Gressil replied on his daughter’s behalf.

Ezra had already met Marquis Desmond’s son, Rasher Desmond, and he had come off as a snobbish prick. But he still had no clue about Rasher’s dueling skills.

To collect them, he only needed to verify his identity with a matching signature.Since Golden Brooke was the most popular banking choice for most commoners, Ezra knew he could not visit the bank in his official tournament attire as it would create a commotion. Ezra was only a child when Lady Fiona left this world. He only remembered her face in blurry fragments, but her sweet voice was still crystal clear inside his mind. As the cashier led Ezra to the backrooms, his heart yearned to be with his family one last time. At this moment he felt like he could give anything just to meet his parents again.“You know Fiona never told me she had a nephew. But she did talk a lot about her daughter. I think her name was Aurelia. It’s a shame what happened to the Romanovs,” the cashier said as she opened the locker room door and requested Ezra to step inside. The bank had seventy lockers in total, with only three of them belonging to the nobles. Naturally, it roused Ezra’s curiosity.“Who do these other Regal Lockers belong to?” he asked. The cashier turned around and replied, “I am sorry, but we do not share the details of our customers with others. Who did you say you were again?”“My name is Loris Lagerlof,” Ezra replied.“I don’t think you are from

Over the last few days, Ezra had familiarized himself with Magaravia’s streets, and he no longer felt like an outsider. Even Ashton Alley had lost its initial repulsiveness and become a part of his routine visits. However, as the wagon crossed the stone bridge leading out of Bolter Street, the coachman pulled to a grinding halt right at the entrance to the slums. A large crowd of commoners had gathered on the streets, armed with sticks and brooms.“I am sorry, but this is as far as I can go my good sir,” the coachman whispered in a nervous voice. Ezra tossed him a handful of Scepters and stepped down.As the carriage drove away, Ezra approached the mob and tried to get a closer look at things.“I tell you these Blue Caps think they can do anything they want!” a lean middle-aged man dressed in soiled clothes exclaimed.Another raised his axe and yelled angrily. “We should teach them a lesson they will remember for the rest of their lives!”“Yeah! We should show them we are not afraid o

Running a profitable tavern or inn inside a shady alley deep within the slums was an impossible task.Ezra had realized long back that Madam Moonfrey made most of her coin from selling stolen wares and smuggling goods. However, the familiar old faces getting drunk in her establishment at the oddest hours of the day meant that she ran the liquor business as a front for her illegal activities. And judging by her attire and the number of helping hands she had hired, it was clear that she was raking in quite a lot of coin.Ezra had no intention of interfering in her personal affairs or reminding her of her moral obligations, but today’s incident involving the city guard made him suspicious about her true nature of work.As Madam Moonfrey guided Ezra to the bar counter, he looked around suspiciously, trying to find clues that would lead him to the right answers. But everything seemed as normal as ever.“I see you have taken a liking to my humble establishment. Remember, if you are looking f

In the course of his short interaction with Marquis Desmond, if Ezra had learned anything it was that the man was extremely reserved and preferred staying aloof rather than mingling freely with his peers.A connection between the Marquis and a lowly smuggler like Madam Moonfrey seemed highly improbable. But the undeniable proof was right there in Ezra’s hand.“What would you want with a slum-dwelling trinket seller?” Ezra mumbled as he unfolded the letter and held it in front. As he hurriedly ran his eyes over the creased white paper, things became more intriguing. It read as follows:Dear Madam Moonfrey,I send my regards to the Bleeding Roses. You have been a valuable ally and helped us keep an eye on what transpires in the streets and between the sheets. His Grace is pleased with your efforts but advises you to exercise caution.Keep us informed of what the hyenas whisper in the dark, and we will keep watering your flowers. Long live the king! When Ezra returned to the mansion, the elite knight in charge of security informed Ezra that Count Gressil had left a while back to visit the Viscount, and Tanya had been summoned by the High Priestess.Ezra acknowledged with a nod and enquired about the remodeling work. The knight revealed that Count Gressil had arranged for some decorators and gardeners from the surrounding villages and they were going to arrive the very next day.The only issue was the extensive arrangements and remodeling would take a lot of time. And to get the job done within a day, they needed to vacate the premises.“His Excellency is looking for another temporary residence,” the knight added. “He has requested you to personally talk to the decorators and gardeners before they begin their work tomorrow.”Ezra nodded and instructed him to inform him as soon as the Count returned.Having the whole mansion to himself felt both liberating and lonely at the same time. However, Tanya looked troubled over something.“How did things go with the Viscount?” Ezra asked the first question to the Count and Tanya eagerly turned to face her father.Count Gressil smiled and leaned forward with his hands on the table. “Viscount Forell seems quite impressed with Lord Nazarus. He told me he had his doubts about joining our cause before, but after your little conversation at the ball, he feels confident about your plans.”Tanya had already divulged her proposal to her father, and the Count readily accepted her plan. Even though it was criminal to plan something like deposing the king, the idea of replacing him with his daughter seemed to be the best way out of this mess.“I am told that Princess Ale

Outside the walls of Stonewell, the Imperial Army was nearly spent from the endless fighting. The ghouls and resurrected skeletons kept coming even as the soldiers killed them in hundreds. “I don’t think we can hold them back much longer,” Marquis Desmond relayed in his hoarse voice, his throat sore from shouting commands and organizing his troops. “These things just keep coming. There is no end to their numbers.”“Don’t give up just yet. Ezra needs us to hold the line and keep them distracted,” Aurelia replied, firing a firebolt from her musket. It burned through five packs of ghouls and cleared a path to the Infernal Gates. “Those Lich Kings are doing all the summoning. If we kill them, there will be no one left to raise the dead again.”“The problem is getting close to them,” Count Gressil said, riding down from the frontlines. “We tried shooting at them, but they are protected by unholy barriers. Not even my enchanted bullets could get through.”While the three of them were busy

Fighting demons was nothing new for Ezra. He had single-handedly vanquished a Flame Demon barely a few weeks back and then held his own against an even stronger Abyssal Demon. However, the Shadow Demon blocking his path presented a whole different challenge. To make matters worse, Vorus had already enlisted the help of a dozen more cultists to empower his spell and prevent the dark barrier from shrinking further. Now, even with one of the dark towers disabled, the spell’s influence continued growing stronger by the minute.Ezra could feel his muscles turning stiff as the decaying influence of the dark spell slowly sapped his strength, wreaking havoc on his body. The Shadow Demon noticed Ezra’s hands trembling as he leveled Lord Sebastian’s enchanted musket against his shoulder and took aim. A ring of blue light appeared in front of the barrel, and as Ezra pulled the trigger, a bolt of forked lightning erupted from his rifle. It crackled through the air and zapped the Shadow Demon, bu

  • Rotting away

Destroying the tainted crystal disabled the dark tower, severing its link from Vorus. With just two dark towers empowering his spell, the dark barrier shrunk back to the walls of Stonewell, weakening in intensity.Ezra breathed a sigh of relief as the decay slowed down, giving him just enough time to drink another Rapid Rejuvenation potion.Although it wasn’t a permanent solution, the magic brew helped Ezra buy just a little more time for himself.“One down. Two to go.” As Ezra looked outside, the shrieking of wyverns alerted him. The dark ones had heard the explosion and were now circling the skies around the tower.Flying out of there was only going to land Ezra in more trouble, so instead of taking the quick way out, he jumped down onto a broken ledge and rolled onto the rubble to cushion his fall.It wasn’t the smoothest path, and it tore Ezra’s jacket and bruised his legs, but he managed to get out of the tower before the necro bats swarmed in through the hole in the wall.Ezra’s

The Imperial Army fighting outside was forced to back away and adopt a more defensive approach as the dark barrier expanded, engulfing a good quarter of the vast plains.Even the elves under Flavius’ command ran back to escape the effects of the spell.Ezra, however, had no choice but to push through the city while struggling with the constant life drain. Every second he spent inside the dark barrier leeched an hour from his life, making him age unnaturally.Although Ezra had only been inside Stonewell for a couple of minutes, he could already feel his limbs growing stiff and his skin turning wrinkly and soft.“Why don’t you just attack and kill Vorus directly? Why go through all the trouble of sabotaging the dark towers and

  • Rot and Decay

Ezra moved like a shadow, his boots kissing the cobbled road noiselessly as he sneaked up to the walls of Stonewell. A barred iron gate guarded by Elite Gunners obstructed his path while an army of Skeletal Archers kept watch from the battlements above.Even though the night was blindingly dark, the faint light from the spectral lamps hanging from the wall flickered in the soft-dying wind, illuminating the city in an eerie glow.In the past, a traveler could hear the grinding of factory gears and the crackling flames of the blazing furnace even from outside the gate, but now this once bustling city had fallen into a deathly slumber. The only sounds that reached Ezra’s ears were the wailing of banshees and the distant howls of feral ghouls. No living creature could survive within the walls of Stonewell while the dark barrier was active, yet Ezra was puzzled to see two human Gunners guarding the gate.“This doesn’t make any sense. How are they fighting the curse?” he mumbled in confusi

The cavalry units rode down the lowly ghouls while the riflemen continued targeting the Slashers.Even the Skeletal Warriors found it difficult to penetrate the defensive circle as the Imperial Swordsmen hacked and slashed through the undead attackers, covering all sides.Count Gressil and Marquis Desmond acted as commanding officers, organizing the whole offensive and charting a course through the madness. Their strategy of supporting the melee attackers with ranged gunfire worked wonders against the undead. However, the tides of battle turned once again as Vorus sent out his fliers to engage the enemy.Dark Harpies and Tainted Beholders flew out of the clouds, catching the human troops by surprise. The riflemen were too busy dealing with the Slashers and this sudden aerial assault left them defenseless.Flocks of harpies swooped down like eagles and plucked the s

Owing to their scaly hides and tougher flesh, the Slashers resisted the burn but were dazzled by the bright light.Staying in the holy light caused the necrophages to lose their regenerative abilities and dealt continuous damage to their rotting bodies. Their flesh started peeling off their bones as their skin sizzled and hissed.Marquis Desmond realized the enemy was in a spot of bother and immediately pressed the offensive, ordering the Imperial Troops to attack. The Imperial Cavaliers rode out with purpose and trampled down the retreating ghouls while the swordsmen formed a protectiv

Soon, it turned so chilly that a thin sheet of ice covered the ground, and the troops started shivering in their boots.“This cannot be natural,” Marquis Desmond pointed out as he noticed the water inside his flask freeze without warning. Even though he was wearing a heavy jacket layered with fur, he could feel the chilly wind biting through his clothes like daggers. “Hold!” he ordered, bringing the marching formation to a sluggish halt.Up ahead, even Count Gressil commanded the Imperial Riflemen to stop their advance and dig in for now. However, the golems marching in front continued trudging through the fog, unfazed by the whims of the weather and undeterred by the fear of the undead.Just when things had r

I think your elves are more suited for infiltrations and assassinations,” she explained to Flavius. “Where do you want us then?” he questioned, eager to join the war efforts.“You are staying back.
