Reed knocked on the door, thrusting his hands into his pockets while he waited for a response. Not long after, the door was flung open and a short, stocky man with beer gut and rounded glasses perched on his square face opened the door.
“What do you want?” He barked, giving Reed a once-over.
“I want to see…” Reed's words trailed off because the client, Anna was already standing behind her father, staring at him with eyes as wide as saucers.
It was obvious they were fighting. Her lashes were wet with tears, her cheeks sunken and even her clothes hung off her frame.
Guilt slammed into Reed when he took in her appearance, especially when he knew that a large part of what was happening was his fault.
Making a decision there and then, Reed decided to return Anna's money even though it went against the rules of his profession…in return for a small favor.
“Can I see you for a moment?” He asked politely.
Anna glanced at her parents and then at him, nodding eagerly. “Sure.”
Her Dad wasn't so quick to let it go though. “Anna, who's this?!”
“He's just a friend.” She snapped, jerking the door out of his hold, and slamming it hard. Facing him, she folded her hands. “What are you doing here? How did you even find me?”
Reed raised his phone. “Technology, but anyways that's besides the point. I think we can be beneficial to each other at this point.”
“How?” She cocked a brow.
Reed inclined his head towards the closed door. “I heard what happened and I can help…by giving you the money back.” Anna's face lit up, and then he went for the kill. “But I'm going to need a favor from you in return.”
“Like what?” Suspicion colored her eyes.
Reed made a gesture towards his car, where his daughter was visible. “I need you to look after my daughter for a couple of days, I need to take care of this drug dealer business.”
Anna gaped. “How do you want me to explain that to my parents?”
“Just tell them I'm your classmate or something and I'm having a family emergency.” Reed looked up. “Oh, and I would advise you to take your family away, preferably out of the city for a couple of days.”
Anna nodded, taking the stack of dollar bills Reed offered her. “You need to be careful. Killing someone that dangerous is risky business which could get even worse if you die, leaving me with blood on my hands.” Glancing towards her house, Anna bit her lower lip. “After everything went south, I started to contemplate using legal means go catch that bastard…”
Reed only smiled, indulging her but deep down, his heart thumped hard in anticipation.
It had been way too long since he had killed many people.
Anna shook it off. “ I'll go in first and explain things to my parents, that should buy you enough time to say goodbye to your daughter.”
Reed's steps felt ten times heavier as he walked back to the car.
Mandy looked when Reed's shadow fell over her. His heart also felt heavy, hating the fact that he had to leave her so soon after they just reunited.
Ripping off the band-aid at once, Reed knelt. “Hey, pumpkin. Daddy has to go off and deal with the bad guys but you're just going to hang out with a friend for a couple of days…is that okay?”
Mandy was silent for so long, her eyes roving over his face that he thought he had done something wrong. Suddenly, she rushed towards him, circling her slim hands around his neck. “Whatever decision you make is fine with me Daddy. I know you're going to come back, no matter what.”
Reed felt overwhelmed by emotions and he fought to blink back the tears, softly cupping the back of his daughter's head.
Then he pulled away, reaching for a gun tucked into the waistband of his slacks, and handed it to Mandy.
He spent the next couple of minutes, showing her how to lift and level the muzzle, also showing her how to hit a target. They practiced how to flip the safety on and off without pulling the trigger and once Anna returned, Mandy had already gotten the hang of it.
Mandy turns off the safety, hiding the gun in her bag so she can follow Reed inside, introducing her to Anna.
Once Reed was satisfied that his daughter was safe, he drove away, locating the nearest payphone he acted out step one of his plan.
Reporting the laundromat.
“911, what's your emergency?” The female operator answered on the third ring.
Distorting his voice a bit, taking on a fake accent, Reed answered. “There's a laundromat on River Street and the owner is a drug dealer, using the laundromat as a cover for his illegal business. Also you'll need to get witness protection for A Margie Blackwater.”
There was a brief pause. “Okay, sir. We'll get someone to check it out, what's your name and location?”
Reed ended the call, getting back into his car for plan B.
Even though he had applied for a witness protection program for his mother, Reed's faith in the police system couldn't be stretched that far so he drove over to the hospital.
Tugging a baseball cap low on his face to hide from cameras, he walked briskly into the hospital only to realize there was a bit of commotion ongoing.
Police cars were parked haphazardly in the parking lot, and there were a lot of people hurrying to and fro.
Was there some kind of emergency happening?
His instincts never let him down, indicating that there was something fishy going on.
Reed sprinted to his mother's room in haste, but he stopped short when he over a nurse describing the situation to the police.
Directly opposite where he stood, was a monitor that displayed the CCTV footage which showed a familiar figure walking out of the hospital by herself.
His mother…
Reed stood in the hospital room, his heart sank with worry. His mother, who was supposed to wait for him in the bed, was nowhere to be found, “why did she leave?” The question kept replying in his head. Reed couldn't bear the thought of losing her, especially not now. As he sat there, his thoughts turned to Walker Rhomes, Rhomes was ruthless and lacked regard for human life. Reed hoped that he hadn't a hand in her leaving. Reed's mind raced with questions and fears. He wondered what would prompt his mother to leave the safety of the hospital room. Was it the fear of being trapped in this sterile environment, or was there something more sinister at play? He couldn't shake the feeling that Rhomes would stop at nothing to harm her if he set his eyes on her. But before he could protect his mother, Reed knew he had to leave the hospital. He couldn't risk Rhomes or any of his men showing up and causing chaos. With a heavy sigh, he stood up from the chair and glanced at his mother’s empty
Sarah's grip tightened on Anna's shoulder, her voice filled with determination. "We won't let them harm you, Anna. We'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe." Anna nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Thank you, Mom. We need to leave immediately. Mark looked at his wife and then back at Anna. He realized that his daughter was genuinely concerned for their well-being. With a heavy sigh, he finally nodded. "Alright, Anna. We'll go to the cabin. But promise me that we'll come back once things are better." Anna smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you, Dad. I promise, as soon as it's safe, we'll come back. We just need this time to regroup and take care of each other." Mark's jaw clenched, his protective instincts fueling his resolve. "We'll gather what we need and leave right away. We won't let them get to you, Anna." And with that, the family began to pack their essentials, preparing to leave the city behind and seek refuge in the safety of their family cabin As they hurri
Margie Blackwater stormed into Walker Rhomes' lavish office, her eyes blazing with anger. The room was adorned with opulent furniture and expensive artwork, a stark contrast to the fury radiating from Margie. Walker, a tall and imposing figure, sat behind his mahogany desk, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he observed her entrance."Come in, come in, Margie," Walker beckoned, his voice dripping with false charm. He rose from his seat and approached her, his eyes never leaving her face. But Margie was having none of it. She shrugged off his outstretched hands, her voice laced with frustration and determination."You promised, Walker," she seethed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You promised that if I gave you the evidence I had on you, you would leave my son and his daughter alone. But you are still having your men hunt my son. This isn't the deal we had."Walker's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. He circled his desk, leaning aga
Mike's head throbbed as he slowly regained consciousness. The room spun around him, and he struggled to focus his blurry vision. With a groan, he pushed himself up, his body aching from the impact that had knocked him out."Shit," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. Panic surged through him as he scanned the room, his eyes widening in disbelief. Mandy was nowhere to be seen, and neither was Reed. Dread settled in his chest like a heavy weight as he realized the gravity of the situation. He had failed. Walker would be furious.Mike's mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened. He had been so close to finishing Reed off, but something had gone wrong. He cursed himself for letting his guard down, for underestimating the danger that Reed posed. Now, not only had he lost his chance to eliminate the threat, but Mandy was missing too.Fear gnawed at his insides as he stumbled to his feet, his legs wobbly and weak. He knew he had to act quickly. Walker wouldn't tolerate failu
Kayla sat in the newly acquired apartment that Mike had arranged for her. As she settled in, her phone rang, and it was Mike on the other end. He requested Reed's number from her, prompting Kayla to question his intentions. "What do you want with it?" she asked curiously. Mike replied, "Walker wants to have a word with him." Curiosity piqued, Kayla hesitated for a moment before agreeing. "Alright, hold on. Let me send it to you," she said, quickly typing out Reed's number and sending it to Mike. As she waited for an explanation, she couldn't help but wonder what was going on. "What's happening? Is everything alright?" she inquired, concern evident in her voice.Mike sighed on the other end of the line, his voice filled with frustration. "Nah, getting rid of Reed is proving to be more difficult than we initially thought. But now the boss has found a leverage on him," he revealed, his words hinting at a complicated situation. After Kayla angrily dropped her phone, frustration and anger
Reed knew he was treading on dangerous ground, but he had no choice. The possibility of running into an ambush loomed over him, but he had to gather information. Joyce Palmer was his best bet. She had dealt with Walker Homes before, and Reed hoped she could shed some light on the situation. With a determined resolve, Reed got into his car and started the engine. As he drove through the dimly lit streets, Reed's mind raced with thoughts of his mother's safety. He contemplated various strategies, considering every possible scenario that could unfold. He knew he had to be prepared for the worst, but his heart ached at the thought of his mother being in danger. He couldn't bear the thought of losing her. Finally, Reed arrived at Joyce Palmer's home. He parked his car and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He knew he had to be cautious, as danger could be lurking around any corner.
