Arthur raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement playing on his lips. "Anything, Wellesley? You're willing to give me anything?"

That was his first genuine show of reaction since the interaction started and normally that would be a bad sign but it seemed Wellesley was much too distracted to think about that, or perhaps he did consider it but wrote it off as unimportant.

Wellesley nodded frantically, his eyes returning to the floor after meeting Arthur's gaze for the briefest of moments. "Yes, anything! Just please, don't hand me over to the police! I'll do anything, just don't let them take me away!"

“Is that so?” Arthur asked, his seemingly clueless tone further unsettled the crouching man who understood that it was an obvious attempt at taunting, and a somewhat successful one at that.

“Yes sir, please. I won't last a day inside prison. Please.” Wellesley put aside his pride and ego and begged. It was not something he would have ever imagined himself doing in his lifetime, but it was ne

The atmosphere at the police headquarters was already suffocatingly tense and while no one said a word about it, everyone present felt the mood couldn't get any worse. But their thoughts were proved to be much further from the truth after the arrival and departure of the renowned Laura Hughes, the daughter of the family that was the main reason for the tension they experienced at the time.Merely moments after she left, the exhausted police commissioner returned from his well deserved break, the somewhat calm expression he wore fading away as he noticed the stuffy atmosphere in the office.Turning to the detective who approached him, the man who was one of the very few who he truly confided in out of all his subordinates, he asked. “Timothy, did something happen here?”He glanced around the office, returning his gaze to the commissioner with a sigh. “Yes sir. Laura Hughes came here.”His brows furrowed as annoyance flickered across his features that formerly reflected the concern he f

“What? How did you come to that conclusion?!” The commissioner asked, genuinely curious as to how the man before him, the victim in this case, was able to arrive at such an answer.Shaking his head from side to side, Arthur replied. “No, that's for you to find out. Also, as far as anyone is concerned, you were the ones who originally had the lead and were preparing for his arrest.”Commissioner Geston understood the reasoning behind his statement and while he didn't not fully agree with his way of doing things, he did not have any other options. The plan was simple, while the commissioner or his subordinates would pressure Wellesley to get more answers, they could also reassure the public by showing that the force was making considerable progress.“Well then,” his remark cut off the commissioner’s train of thought and grabbed his attention just as he continued. “I'll be on my way now. Keep me posted.”Arthur turned to leave, a bit eager to get started on his next objective. He has pla

Stepping into the villa and walking side by side with him, Arthur glanced around, noting a good number of new faces among the house personnel. He observed for a bit longer before turning to Henri and asking, “Did you change your butlers and maids too?”Looking from the ones who bowed in greeting to Arthur, he replied. “Well, yes I did. I was thinking a lot after discovering one of my own workers was the one responsible for my daughter's state. It was shocking but I had to make a decision to prevent anything like that from ever happening.”“And you did that by hiring some naive and lousy new blood?” Arthur asked, gesturing at the door from where they entered.Understanding that he was referring to the guards outside, he bowed slightly again as he commented. “You have my apologies for that once more. I ask that you understand that they were tense due to the failure of their predecessors.”Henri opened the door to his private study while he continued. “As for the maid servants and butler

Exotic was an understatement for the products brought for the auction during the occasion. From weapons to people to animals down to antiques, anything rare and mostly illegal could be acquired there.Another thing associated with it was the secrecy. It was an extremely hush event that was only spoken of by the who's who. And even at that, entrance was invitation only. No one who wasn't on the invitation list could find the cruise ship where it took place talk less of even joining the banquet. So he was immensely surprised when Arthur stated the exact details of said occasion while also implying that he was not one invited or even reached out to by neither the organizers nor the attendees. But more than that was the danger Henri had associated with that event. It was no secret that several law enforcement units had made it a task to find and shut down the event for years but none had made any progress. What they had done instead was to change their manner of approach. Since it was dee

And so, over a week passed before the arrival of the long awaited D-day.During that time both Arthur Rhyfel and Henri Lefevre prepared everything required for their strategy. As far as Henri knew, the plan was simple; both he and Arthur were to board the cruise ship and attend the event while the latter was in the guise of a bodyguard. His aim apparently was simply to meet someone and that was all Henri needed to know, both for his safety and that of his family. But for Arthur it was anything but a simple or straightforward plan; he would need to infiltrate the Merchant's cruise ship while maintaining his persona as Henri Lefevre's bodyguard. If that wasn't tough enough, he had to also navigate and properly investigate the ship for any and all sorts of evidence that could be used against the Hughes family. This was an objective suggested by Charles and not long after it was given to Arthur as a sub mission under the main one which was; [Defeat the “Merchant”.]Charles had given his

So due to that kind of leadership, there was no proper successor for the great family. That brought about a great rift and the formation of several new factions, each fighting for control.Control of the assets, control of the influence and most of all, complete ownership of the position of the patriarch.Due to their current state, there was no true leader to reach out to the Hughes family for assistance or for the Hughes family to contact. So after declaring them a lost cause at least for now, they stepped back and monitored the situation. These among many other reasons contributed to the current behavior of the great family and to make matters much worse, the family's second son was revealed to be murdered and the rumors that his corpse wasn't even left intact had begun to spread, courtesy of Arthur and Charles of course. So the facade of absolute strength they kept up began to slowly crumble and the death of the Surgeon led to the formation of more cracks in the fragile thing they

Arthur remained by Luna as the maids placed his luggage in the black car that was to take him to the Lefevre house. Then from there under the guise of Henri's bodyguard, he would be taken to the cruise ship where if things went as planned, he would meet the Hand of the Hughes family called the Merchant. He could sense her unease, her fear of being separated from him after being reunited for only a short while. Arthur's heart swelled with empathy; he knew exactly how she felt. He had promised her and himself that he wouldn't cause her anymore pain and yet again he found himself breaking that promise. It seemed that all his planning and their outing was not as effective as he had originally hoped it to be. "Luna, my dear cousin," he said, his deep voice soothing, "I'll be fine. I promise. This trip is just a quick one as I told you before, a meeting with a contact of Henri Lefevre to discuss potential business ventures. I'll be back before you know it." Luna's eyes narrowed, her

“Are we heading to Henri Lefevre's villa first, sir?” Leon asked, glancing at the reflection of the stoic Arthur on the rear view mirror.Resting his chin on his hand as he stared out the window, Arthur replied. “No, we'll go over to Charles' headquarters first to see if he has any new information and then we'll be on our way to Henri's place.”“Understood sir.” Leon stated curtly, returning his attention to the wheel.Prior to his departure, Arthur had made a request to Charles concerning gathering sufficient information on the venue where he would soon clash with the Merchant, one of the Hands of the Hughes family and for the first time ever, he was unable to properly fulfill his request. It would be safe to say without a doubt that Charles was the best information broker in the entire region and finding those close to his level of skill or connection was such a rare thing that one could count the number of them on a single finger. So making the statement that if Charles was unable

Leonard Hughes sat behind his large desk in his study, a chilled glass of whiskey in his frail hands. If he had been told this would be how the great Hughes family that had survived and prevailed for centuries would fall, he would not believe. But that was the cold harsh reality. It was ironic and somewhat of a sick joke that it all ended on the same day that it started.Like someone had chosen it particularly because of its significance. Perhaps they had.On that very day fifteen years ago, The Hughes family, Burton family and Williams family, three of the seven great had joined hands together to bring the downfall of the Rhyfel family.Their actions against them had long begun, but that day marked the finale, the end of it all. They had pooled their resources together and attacked the Rhyfel family estate with the intention to spare not a single soul. And surely they would have succeeded at that, if not for the bravery of the young flower of the Rhyfel family, Luna Rhyfel.Pushing a

His eyes widened as he took in the information: financial records, names, operations, evidence that implicated the Hughes family in countless crimes. It was the breakthrough he had been waiting for, but even more comprehensive than he had hoped."This is… beyond what I expected," he murmured, still processing the weight of what he held. Then, snapping into action, he pressed a button on his desk intercom. "Bring in Agent Marlowe and Special Operative Ryder."Within moments, the door opened, and two figures entered. Agent Marlowe, a sharp-eyed woman with an air of calm authority, and Special Operative Ryder, a tall, muscular man with a cold, calculating demeanor. They had been sent from the capital, handpicked by the emperor to assist in cleaning up the city, a task that had proven more daunting than either had anticipated."Commissioner," Marlowe greeted, nodding as her eyes flicked over to Isabella, recognizing the family resemblance. The commissioner wasted no time. His voice, though weakened, was laced with bitterness. “Saul... if only you had been more competent. We wouldn’t be facing this now.”With a final, pained sigh, Leonard collected himself, his expression hardening into a grim resolve. “Summon all the Hands back to the estate immediately. We cannot let Rhyfel breach our defenses.”Ian nodded sharply, understanding the gravity of the command. “Yes, Father. I’ll see to it.”As Ian departed to carry out his father’s orders, Leonard muttered under his breath, his words dripping with venom. “Uther Rhyfel… you’ve always been a thorn in my side. Even from beyond the grave, your son continues to cause me trouble.”Meanwhile, Arthur Rhyfel was making his way through the bustling city streets with a purposeful stride. The same city that had seen his return for the first time was once again unaware of the storm that was brewing beneath. He approached a sleek black vehicle, where Elias, his driver, waited at the wheel. Arthur’s destination was Is

As he rounded a corner, he saw her, Luna, his older cousin, the only living family he had left and his only true reason for engaging in such a war. Yes, he wished to avenge his deceased family, yet if she had not saved him on that day, fifteen years ago, he would not have been alive to do so.She was his sole purpose for being alive and the one dearest to him. The one he had to protect at all costs. Many would claim that the war god had no weaknesses, and that was in fact true. Luna Rhyfel was not his weakness but his strength and while she might be the weaker of the two, should anything befall her it will not break the war god, no.It would simply unleash the demise of the ones foolish enough to commit such an act.The earth itself would not hide them from his fury if they were to do something as hopelessly stupid as even attempting to bring about the demise of the flower of the Rhyfel family. She was standing by the large windows that overlooked the estate’s gardens, her gaze dist

Ian took a deep breath, knowing the next part would be the hardest to convey. “To gain more information about him, we need to surrender information on the Hands of the Hughes family.”Leonard’s eyes sharpened, a dangerous glint appearing in his gaze. The Hands of the Hughes family were their most protected assets, their identities known only to the inner circle. To give up that information was to expose the family’s very core, to lay bare their most guarded secrets. He leaned back, closing his eyes for a moment as he considered the implications. Ian waited, his breath almost held as he watched his father’s face for any sign of what he might decide.Outside the warehouse that served as Charles’ base, Laura sat in the backseat of the car, her fingers tapping against the leather seat in a rare display of impatience. The weight of the conversation with Ian earlier still hung over her, the gravity of what was at stake gnawing at her composure. She glanced at the warehouse, its weathered

So while she was not one to so readily show emotions outwardly unless she deemed it necessary. Her experience growing up as the daughter of the patriarch in the Hughes family had made her this way.It was necessary for her survival, so her visible nervousness had hinted to her bodyguard and driver who watched her from the side, on how drastic the situation was.Her mind drifted to the response of her father should the news be delivered. She wondered if he would side with her uncle, his brother who had blamed the fall of two of the Hands on her “bad management.”As if that wasn't enough, more stray thoughts seemed to emerge, only further worsening her nervous state. What would the patriarch say? How would he react to the news of the war god’s return? And more importantly, what would he decide about the information Charles held?Taking a deep breath, Laura pushed those thoughts aside and steeled herself. She had a role to play, and she would do it to the best of her ability. The Hughes

Laura stepped out of the study, her heels once again clicking against the marble floor as she moved briskly through the corridor. The conversation with Ian and their uncle still echoed in her mind, but she couldn’t afford to dwell on it now. There were more pressing matters to attend to.As she stood by the car that had brought her, she began to consider her next course of action. While she was granted authority over the Hands of the Hughes family due to her father, the patriarch's current state as well as her older brother, the heir apparent’s view on handling things, her authority was limited.Something as drastic as handing over information on the group whose identities were the most secured amongst all of the seven great families was not something she had the clearance to do, so in that case, she needed to seek who could. This was a one in a million opportunity and she was sure no one else but Charles could grant her the information that would help both her and the rest of the Hug

It was what the likes of a treacherous family like them deserved. The Hughes family would get no mercy from the war god, just the pain, suffering and tears they had brought upon the Rhyfel family.Their actions had birthed the unstoppable existence that was the war god, and that very same existence that their actions had created would now be what would bring about their demise.Truly ironic if one were to consider it.And so following his order while having an idea of Arthur's intentions, the prominent information broker returned to his seat, eyeing the bodyguard as he prepared to carry out his plans.“So, are you done compiling the necessary information?” She questioned, her tone hinting at the sense of urgency she felt, although she tried to hide it.“Well, I am now, lady Laura.” he replied, adjusting his posture on his chair.“Then why the delay? Is he that important of a person that revealing his identity is problematic?” Her question did little to hide not just the sense of urgen
