Chapter 3

"And where are you coming from by this time!?" Mrs Harrington asked as Jared entered the Harrington mansion.

"I warned you this morning not to come back late otherwise you would be severely punished and yet you went against my rule!" Mrs Harrington yelled.

Just as she was about to slap Jared, Elena interfered.

"Mom, please he had to run some errands for me. That's why he came in late and he is your son-in-law's mother!" Elena said standing in between her mother and Jared.

Jared was shocked. Elena who had just betrayed him is also standing in to defend him. He was speechless as he couldn't comprehend all that was happening. All he was concerned about was getting the money to treat his godmother and he knew he needed to get on Mr and Mrs Harrington's good side to be able to do that.

"Mother, I am very very sorry for disappointing you. Please tell me how to make it up to you" Jared said, going on his knees.

Mrs Harrington was surprised, he knew with the way she had always treated Jared. He was still manly enough and would never beg her but seeing him do that now was surprising.

"At least you have some sense today. Make sure you clean the whole house and make sure everywhere is neat and well designed for tomorrow" Mrs Harrington said as she walked away spatting on Jared.

"I never knew you would stoop so low Jared. You are just so shameless, you now lick my mother's feet. I regret the day I met you, although you served your purpose and your time is almost up" Elena said as she walked away.

Jared was confused and did not understand what Elena meant by telling him that his time was almost over.

"What do you mean by my time is almost up Elena?' Jared asked, holding her back.

"Don't you dare lay your filthy hands on me or I will have you arrested right now!" Elena yelled.

Jared knew he had to compose himself. He can't do anything that would make the Harrington's throw him out. He needs to get the money for his godmother's operation.

"I… I am sorry Elena" Jared apologized painfully.

"You better be and don't worry time will tell when your time is up," Elena said as she walked away.

The day for the Harrington family to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Apex Alliance group is finally here. As guests stroll in and out of the beautifully decorated mansion.

The luxurious living room was decorated in all shades of wealth as the lights beamed brightly. Decorative lights and illuminants light up the extravagant Harrington mansion.

The Harrington were all royally dressed. Mr and Mrs Harrington were beaming with smiles as gifts strolled in as the rich elites congratulated them on their tenth anniversary. Elena was also dressed in an eloquent dress. 

Sighting Andrews at the entrance of the living room, Jared knew he had to compose himself. The Harringtons greeted Mr Andrews and also thanked him for investing in their business. Elena walked up to Andrew planting a French kiss on his lips.

Jared knew there was nothing he could do about it. He needed to get the money for his godmother's operation and that's all that matters to him.

Jared knew this was the right opportunity to ask Mr and Mrs Harrington as the crowd had reduced and they were in a very good mood.

"Mother, father, please can you lend me a million dollars for my godmother's operation" Jared asked as he approached the Harrington's.

The entire family gaped in extreme shock except for Elena and Donald.

Mr and Mrs Harrington's demeanor changed to that of anger immediately.

"You are out of your mind. How dare you make such an outrageous request. Look at yourself from your head down to your toe, are you worth a million dollars and you dare to ask me to borrow you a million dollars? An amount your next ten generations would never be able to pay!" Mrs Harrington blurted out angrily.

"Father, please I beg you. I need it for my godmother's operation. I will do anything you want" Jared pleaded.

"It's best for this useless loser to get out of the Harrington mansion now!" Mr Harrington yelled.

"Father, mother, please I will do anything you say. Just please give me the money to save my godmother's life" Jared pleaded.

"Did you just say you will do anything to save your precious godmother's life?" Donald asked as he interrupted the conversation.

Jared was shocked to see Donald say something positive but he also knew he had nothing good up his sleeve at the same time he just wanted a solution to save his godmother's life.

"Yes, I will do anything," Jared responded.

"Okay, then. I will give you the money to save your godmother's life on the basis that you take the fall for me" Donald said.

"What do you mean by taking the fall?" Jared asked, confused.

"Oh, I will explain to you. I was involved in some you know scandal and I was accused wrongly of embezzlement which could be a bad stain to the Harrington family. So all you have to do is say you do it and you will go to prison which then you will be released on bail after some months" Donald explained.

The room was dead silent for some while as Jared tried to comprehend all they were saying.

"So, you mean I should go to prison for a crime you committed?" Jared asked, confused.

"I did not commit the crime and all you have to do is do as I have instructed. That's the only way you can save your godmother's life or you can refuse not to do it and watch her die," Donald said.

"no mother,no father, I will not allow you do this to my husband," Elena said shedding crocodile tears 

"I mean, he is of no use to the family and this is the least you can do probably after you get out of prison we will then acknowledge him as the son-in-law of this family," Mrs Harrington said unapologetically.

"I mean you are just going for some months and your lovely wife here will testify on your behalf and you will be released on bail. it's a win-win you can either accept and save your godmother's life or refuse and watch her die and you have to decide now" Mr Harrington added.

Jared was confused, the whole family had planned it together and now he understood what Elena said when she said his time was almost up. So this was what she meant.

Jared was shattered beyond words as he stared at Elena. He never knew she was that wicked and heartless. But he knew this was the only way to save his godmother's life.

"Okay, I will do it but on one condition and that is you will transfer the operation fee to be used to the hospital right now in my presence," Jared said confidently but painfully

"Of course I will transfer the money immediately but I will only transfer half of the money and until you are in prison I will transfer the remaining half. Do we have a deal?" Donald said.

"No, we don't" Jared responded

"Okay then, you can go and sort the money elsewhere," Donald said as he walked away.
