Getting Started 5
CALEB'S POV"It was going to be a long night," suspected Caleb. His grandfather had asked that they continue the discussion in his private chambers so he could lie down on the bed and rest his head on a pillow.Caleb agreed."As I was saying," Mateo began as soon as they went inside and shut the door, "Dezani Cosmetics is one of the biggest companies in Mexico City. At least it used to be."Caleb heard him murmur that last part under his breath the moment his head hit the pillow."It competed with some of the big brands in the cosmetic industry around the globe: from France to the United States, to Korea, and even China.""China?" Caleb sounded surprised."Yes. Dezani Cosmetics was a famous manufacturer of ladies' lipsticks for brown skin women. We co-sponsored the Miss World beauty pageant about 22 years ago - if memory serves me well - when a black woman from West Africa won the contest.""This is too good to be true," Caleb said in pleasant delight."Best believe your grandfather. We were the talk of the whole country for a long time, even at the AGM held later that year, Dezani Cosmetics was used as a case study.""What is AGM?""Annual General Meeting. It's a meeting that official bodies, associations, and companies hold each year to elect the board of directors and inform their members of previous and future activities. I was appointed the chairman that year for our outstanding rating by the European Union in the global market.""Wow." Caleb digested the info with awe."Unfortunately though, that was the last time we made our mark on the international stage. Since the gruesome death of Lorenzo..." his voice tailed as he struggled to choke back the lump in his throat. He recovered just as quickly and continued, "the company has suffered a steady decline year after year."Lord Dezani paused to adjust his pillow even as a pensive look gleamed in his eyes. "And also because I'm getting along in years, I haven't been able to run it as efficiently as your father did. New companies have sprung up with young, brilliant minds manning them and they've overtaken ours. The business world is now fast-paced with everything going digital, which is the advantage El-Zaki has.""What is he doing differently, Grandpa?""His son is the brain behind the running of the company even though he's still acting as the CEO."Caleb could swear he heard the old man sniff. And the sound broke his heart."I'm sorry to hear all this, Grandpa," Caleb said amidst his own private agony, "I'll make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible when I take over."Mateo silently groaned. He loved his grandson and was happy to be reunited with him, yet deep down he knew that running such a big company was going to be a huge responsibility. Especially for someone who was an amateur in business. But he couldn't outrightly say that to the young man."I'm sure you will do all you can, my boy," he said and patted his shoulder. Caleb was sitting next to him on the big bed made of cedarwood."I know you have your doubts about my leadership skills, Grandpa. And understandably so. However, I've got a few years of working experience - albeit in smaller firms. Recently though, I worked with DeZ Cosmetics for close to two years and know a bit about running an organisation. My ex-boss left some of the administrative work to me and I delivered as best I could. There is still so much I could learn, I admit, but I'm really a fast learner. Trust me."The old man smiled at his grandson's enthusiastic thinking. He admired his never say die spirit. "Then you will have to accompany me every day to the office from henceforth.""I will love to do that, Grandpa.""Well then, go get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be the first of many days ahead," Mateo said and yawned."Right, Grandpa. I can see you are exhausted and need to sleep too.""Goodnight, my boy.""Sleep well, Grandpa."Caleb slowly stood up and opened the door. As it shut behind him he exclaimed. "I can't wait for tomorrow to come."***At the office the next day, Lord Dezani took Caleb through a tour of the massive building complex, showing him the administrative block, the lab where production takes place, and the storage room. He asked the secretary to send a circular to every department calling for an emergency meeting so he could introduce him to the other members of his staff."Grandpa," Caleb whispered when they were about to commence the meeting, "please do not announce to anyone yet that I'm going to be the next CEO.""But why?" the old man was curious."Because that might make things a bit difficult for me.""How so?""I want to be able to work without being given preferential treatment. That will avail me the chance to understudy all the staff closely, to know each of them their true colors, and generally see how things are done around here."Lord Dezani considered his words for a moment and nodded." That's a brilliant idea."At the meeting, Caleb was introduced as an intern who would be working directly with the boss to enable him personally supervise his performance. That seemed to thrill some of the workers who were already feeling jealous that he might get preferential treatment as against how they were all being treated.Vincent, the junior clearing agent was the first to react after the meeting. Caleb had gone to inspect the storage room. "Just know that in this company every one must learn fast or else they'll be dropped.""How do you mean?" Caleb inquired."The company I heard is looking to downsize soon. And many staff might be affected if they aren't making much impact. I'm just giving you a heads up," he said looking over his shoulder."Well, thanks for the pep talk. I'll keep that in mind."The HR personnel was rather rude in her reaction to him. "If you must be a part of this company, at least dress to look the part. Being an intern shouldn't be an excuse to appear tattered." She was referring to Caleb's unkempt hair and worn-out clothes. He hadn't shaved for two days and his hair was due for a visit to the barber. Going out with his grandfather the next day wasn't planned at all. In fact, nothing in the last 24 hours of his life went according to plan.Caleb felt embarrassed but kept his cool. "Thanks for your kind suggestion, Miss Johnson.""Jonas." She snapped. After then Caleb returned to his grandfather's office and spent the remainder of the day going through some official documents. Late into the afternoon, they were ready to go home. Mateo had an appointment with a new client slated for 5:00 pm.On their way, he asked Caleb what his experience with the workers was like. "It wasn't any different from my past experience," he answered honestly."See why I wanted people to get to know you for who you really are?""I know. But let's leave things the way they are at the moment."Lord Dezani shrugged, "If you insist."Caleb's mind flashed back to what Miss Jonas had told him. He also remembered the kind of dressing he used to see Mr Hart wearing whenever he came to the office and voiced out."Although, I'm starting to see the need to have that change of wardrobe you mentioned yesterday.""Right. Tomorrow morning Ricardo can take you shopping."Going Shopping 6CALEB'S POV The following morning, Caleb was awoken by the smell of coffee and waffles coming from downstairs. He promptly sat up in the big mahogany bed and tried to take in his new environment for the first time. Everything happened too fast in the last two days that he barely noticed his surroundings. The bedroom wall was painted white and covered with wallpaper depicting a tropical rainforest overlapping a waterfall. The ceiling was immaculate and shaped like a cone - a contrast from the wooden roof that housed him and his mother in their old rented house. The door blinds were velvet green with golden threads draped against the edges. "I can't remember the last time I slept so well," he murmured to himself, his voice still groggy from sleep. His eyes then wandered to the steady rays of sunlight dancing against the glass window covered with a white curtain indicating it was already broad daylight. Stretching, Caleb yawned and got out of bed. He walked over to th
Another Drama 7CALEB'S POV Ricardo pulled the car to a stop in front of the biggest mall Caleb had ever seen.Inside the place was a beehive of activities. So many luxury brands were neatly arranged in different compartments: Dior, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Rolex, etc. Caleb looked about in amazement. "I will need assistance in selecting stuff," he said to Ricardo."Of course, Master."Leah was over at the female section. From the way her eyes darted about, it was obvious she too was having trouble choosing from the array of beautiful dresses and accessories on display.Caleb and Ricardo shopped for clothes, shoes, belts, and briefs. Then they moved to the male accessories section and Ricardo excused himself to quickly use the convenience. Caleb released him to go. As he turned to assess the gold wristwatches on the counter, his eyes caught a glimpse of someone familiar standing a few yards away. It was Mr Hart, his ex-boss. "Wonders shall never end." He sneered at Caleb as he
The Tables Turned 8CALEB'S POVBy the time Caleb got home from the mall, it was noon. His grandfather had already left for the office, thus he decided to take the rest of the day to relax and browse the internet about cars and bikes. He would need his personal means of transportation - something moderate which wouldn't give him away as a rich guy as yet, especially on days he might want to get to the office by himself without waiting for the entourage. He sat in the mini living room attached to his bedroom upstairs, with a glass of red wine he found in the wine bar. A few years ago while he was still job-hunting, he assisted his friend, Raj, to run an errand with his boss' scooter. And though it wasn't a motorbike, he dreamed of owning one someday. It was such a tall dream at the time. He thought of a Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Yamaha, or Suzuki brand. He was still poring the internet when his phone buzzed. "Hello, Grandpa," he answered. "Are you back from the mall?" "Yes. We cam
CALEB'S POVResumption at the OfficeAlthough Caleb had bought two brand-new cars for himself - a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and a BMW X5, he still preferred to ride his motorbike because it gave him the feeling of independence and power. That feeling of being in total control of one's destiny and having absolute command of their affairs - something which had eluded him all his life for the long haul. So early in the morning - about a week later, before anyone else was up, he got up and had a quick bath, dressed up and put on his helmet, then quietly stole out of the house on his bike. It was in the middle of summer and the weather was warm even at the crack of dawn. As he rode along the narrow and winding plains surrounded by open fields, he felt like he was floating in the air when the sultry wind kissed his face. He recalled one weekend during springtime a couple of years back when he and Mia went skiing for the first time on a hilltop and had a similar sensation. He had often wondere
CALEB'S POVThe SurpriseRicardo cleared his throat looking confused. "I'm sorry ma'am...""Miss Daniels," Elena said, putting forth her hand for a handshake. Ricardo looked from her to Caleb not knowing what to do. But Caleb simply smiled and said it was okay. He understood that to mean he could shake hands with her. "It's a pleasure meeting you, Miss Daniels," he replied and briefly shook her hand. The two security guards were still standing there, with puzzled looks on their faces. They've never heard Ricardo being addressed as the CEO. If anything, he had always been seen driving the boss. The slim guy spoke first."Welcome, sir. We were waiting for the boss to arrive because there's been a problem."Ricardo turned to face them. "What problem?" The slim guy pointed at the side of Elena's car."Our new employee here bashed Miss Daniel's car and then spoke rudely to her."The other guard rolled his eyes. He knew his colleague was lying but was helpless as he couldn't just inte
Eating the Humble PieCALEB'S POVA few days after the bike incident, Caleb received a phone call from an unknown ID. It was strange because he hadn't given any outsider his private phone contact. Only close friends and family members had this particular phone line. He was at the office looking through some reports on the computer when the call came in. Cautiously, he pressed the receiver button and placed it against his ear. He didn't say a word and neither did the caller. After what seemed like an eternity, the anxious voice of a female chimed from the other end. "Hello!" she said. "Is that Caleb on the line?" Caleb stirred. The voice sounded familiar. He would recognize it even in his sleep. It was the slam-bang voice of Elena. "Hi, Miss Daniels," he replied in an unenthusiastic tone. "How did you come by my private phone line?" "Oh, come on, Caleb. Don't be too formal. Aren't we old friends?" "No Miss, we aren't. In fact, I don't remember ever being treated as someone fam
THE CONFUSION HEIGHTENS Caleb noticed the silent pleas in Elena's eyes and started to feel sorry for her. But he couldn't let her off that easily otherwise she'd have learned nothing."Did Mr Pérez mention something about fixing my bike?"He was observing her closely to see her reaction. If Jose did mention repairing his bike, he also must have told her about the open apology. "Yes, he did," she replied hesitantly."So?" "I am willing to take responsibility for the damage to the bike." "And?" "And fix it I mean." Caleb was wondering why she was suddenly being petulant. "Seems to me like you're struggling between preserving your pride and keeping your job." "Caleb," she spoke his name firmly. The tone of her voice made him bolt upright. "I have apologised a thousand times to you. And if you want, I could apologise a million more. But making a scene before the entire staff of your company is a bit extreme." Caleb chortled. "A bit extreme you say? So embarrassing me in front o
THE UNEXPECTED TURNAROUND Getting to work the following morning, a group of men in blue uniforms was waiting to meet with Caleb. As soon as he entered the reception, the brunette secretary, Sofia, told him he had visitors. "These men are here to see you, sir." "Who are they and what do they want?" "I have no idea. They were insisting that they wanted to speak with you directly." "I can only attend to one person. The rest of them should wait at the lounge," Caleb said and started up to his office. Just as he ascended the stairs, his phone buzzed. Elena Daniels was calling. Caleb answered. "Good morning! I assume the team of experienced engineers I sent over to fix your bike has arrived." Elena said coldly. Before Caleb could respond, she went on. "I also like to think you received my letter of yesterday from your secretary." "Good morning, Miss Daniels..." "The engineers are there to examine the damage to your bike and also fix it. Kindly permit them. Thank you!" Elena con
