The Tables Turned 8
CALEB'S POVBy the time Caleb got home from the mall, it was noon. His grandfather had already left for the office, thus he decided to take the rest of the day to relax and browse the internet about cars and bikes. He would need his personal means of transportation - something moderate which wouldn't give him away as a rich guy as yet, especially on days he might want to get to the office by himself without waiting for the entourage. He sat in the mini living room attached to his bedroom upstairs, with a glass of red wine he found in the wine bar.A few years ago while he was still job-hunting, he assisted his friend, Raj, to run an errand with his boss' scooter. And though it wasn't a motorbike, he dreamed of owning one someday. It was such a tall dream at the time. He thought of a Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Yamaha, or Suzuki brand. He was still poring the internet when his phone buzzed."Hello, Grandpa," he answered."Are you back from the mall?""Yes. We came in a few minutes ago.""How did it go?" Mateo asked.Flashes of the embarrassing moment inside the mall returned and made him stiffen up, his hands started to shake so violently that he immediately dropped the glass of wine on the stool next to the cushion. There and then he decided that when his grandfather gets back, he was going to demand that some money be transferred into his personal account so he could save face in case he needed to drop by the mall again."Em, about that..." he stuttered, "I think I would need some money in my account."The old man didn't let him finish when he cut in."Yeah, right. I was going to discuss that with you just now. Your account needs to be credited and, also, you'd need to start learning how to drive - that is if you don't already know."Caleb brightened up. "I'm not a professional driver, Grandpa. I only did a few road runs when I underwent some training for a job I applied for.""But..." he thought to add, "I do know how to ride a bike."The old man paused a short while then asked, "Then you won't mind getting a bike?"His grandfather's question made him smile. "Of course not. I was just browsing the internet about bikes...""And did you find your choice as yet?""Hmm," Caleb made a throaty sound. "MTT Turbine Streetfighter."He held his breath when his grandfather didn't respond immediately."But if it's too expensive, a good car would just do," Caleb added."Don't be silly, my boy," his grandfather joked, "there's no machine whether on two wheels or four wheels that is too expensive for a Dezani to ride or drive.""Oh yeah?" Caleb screamed in excitement."Send your account details to me as soon as this call is over. I'm going to forward it to the accountant and ask him to credit your account.""Thank you so much, Grandpa.""I will contact the manager of a motorcycle vendor I know and ask him to bring that model to the house."Caleb was overjoyed."Or better still, since you're not occupied with work at home, you could go over there with Ricardo and get to choose something even better."The last suggestion sounded perfect. He wanted to have fun inspecting other brands of bikes and possibly choose something different from the picture he saw on the internet."I will go over there myself," he confirmed to his grandfather."Good. I'll see to it that the money the accountant is sending to your account will cover the bike too.""Yessssss!"Caleb drawled enthusiastically. His grandpa laughed softly and ended the call. Caleb immediately texted his details to him.Five minutes later, a message beeped on his phone. He picked it up and opened it. The amount that appeared on his screen made him scream so loud his mother came running from downstairs to bang on the door."Look, Mama," Caleb was out of breath. He showed Leah the 7 digits figure on his screen. Never in all his life had he seen such an amount of money anywhere, let alone sitting pretty inside his own account. The alert said $10,000,000.00.Leah didn't understand why there were so many zeros in the number. "Wait, did you get a loan from the bank?""Good question! But no, I didn't. Grandpa asked his accountant to send it to me." He explained."Whatever for? That's a lot of money, my son.""I'm going to get myself a motorbike." He replied beaming."That's great. At least people will stop embarrassing you now."The smile on Caleb's face disappeared. The scene at the pay point registered again in his subconscious. "I wish this had happened earlier," he groaned.***Caleb and Ricardo drove out to the bike vendor. On their way going, he peeped at himself from the rearview mirror and remembered he hadn't gotten the haircut he said he would."Can we stop by the barbing salon first?" he said to Ricardo."Master, the bike vendor is only a few blocks away while the barbing salon where the boss usually patronizes is on the other axis we're just coming from. But let me make a U-turn.""No, no." Caleb objected. "I'll have the haircut on our way back."They arrived at the place and Caleb asked Ricardo to wait in the car that he won't be long. Ricardo obeyed. He actually wanted the freedom to explore without any interference. Two salesmen were standing outside the building. He approached them and said he needed to get a high-powered machine that runs at an insane speed. The First salesman chuckled in derision. "You're talking about an MV Agusta F4CC built for high speeds. Are you joking?" he gave Caleb a measured look from head to toe."Not exactly. But if that's the best you have, I don't mind, " he answered politely."Then you must be a clown," the salesman snapped. "That motorcycle costs over $120,000. It's not built for people like you." He hissed with indignation.Just then Ricardo appeared. He was obviously bored staying in the car by himself and so thought to come and skulk around. When the salesman who was attending to Caleb saw him, he immediately left and went over to Ricardo. The second salesman approached Caleb and apologised gently. "So sorry for that, sir. You can actually make your choice from what we have displayed here or you could follow me to the showroom where we have a variety."Caleb admired his kindheartedness. "Thank you. Are you the manager of this place?" he asked."Unfortunately no, I'm just an intern. We both are," he said pointing to his colleague."We are hoping to get promoted to becoming permanent staff at the end of the year if we make more sales to our name," he added casually.Caleb noted."Well, lead me to the showroom."They went inside and the salesman calmly explained in detail the function of each motorcycle.Caleb eventually settled for a Suzuki AEM Carbon Fiber Hayabusa - widely known as the world's fastest-production motorcycle. It cost even more than the MV Agusta F4CC the first salesman mocked him for and the MTT Turbine Streetfighter he originally had in mind."This is the highest single sale I've made since I started working here," the salesman expressed with gratitude. "And this sale alone will more than make up for the past two months of not meeting the target. Thank you, sir."Caleb smiled."Do not worry, I'm going to patronize you again."They both looked up and saw the other salesman frowning. "What's wrong with him?" Caleb asked in pretense."Let me go and find out, sir."Caleb followed behind him."I thought this gentleman was going to purchase at least one item. But instead, he says he came with his boss.""Who is this boss?" the second salesman asked. He pouted his lips at Caleb," Him.""Really?""So did he buy?" he murmured in his colleague's ear."Yes, I did buy," Caleb replied. They were both surprised he heard them."In fact, I picked something superior to the one you claimed was too expensive for me."The first salesman's mouth hung open."Yes, I like that look on your face."Caleb then turned to look at his salesman, "And I'm going to make sure I recommend him to the manager for promotion.""But he barely started two months ago while I've been working for close to nine months without making sales half of that amount." He protested.Caleb shrugged. "You can forget about any sales you'd be making going forward because I'm going to speak with the manager and see to it that you're dismissed from working here."CALEB'S POVResumption at the OfficeAlthough Caleb had bought two brand-new cars for himself - a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and a BMW X5, he still preferred to ride his motorbike because it gave him the feeling of independence and power. That feeling of being in total control of one's destiny and having absolute command of their affairs - something which had eluded him all his life for the long haul. So early in the morning - about a week later, before anyone else was up, he got up and had a quick bath, dressed up and put on his helmet, then quietly stole out of the house on his bike. It was in the middle of summer and the weather was warm even at the crack of dawn. As he rode along the narrow and winding plains surrounded by open fields, he felt like he was floating in the air when the sultry wind kissed his face. He recalled one weekend during springtime a couple of years back when he and Mia went skiing for the first time on a hilltop and had a similar sensation. He had often wondere
CALEB'S POVThe SurpriseRicardo cleared his throat looking confused. "I'm sorry ma'am...""Miss Daniels," Elena said, putting forth her hand for a handshake. Ricardo looked from her to Caleb not knowing what to do. But Caleb simply smiled and said it was okay. He understood that to mean he could shake hands with her. "It's a pleasure meeting you, Miss Daniels," he replied and briefly shook her hand. The two security guards were still standing there, with puzzled looks on their faces. They've never heard Ricardo being addressed as the CEO. If anything, he had always been seen driving the boss. The slim guy spoke first."Welcome, sir. We were waiting for the boss to arrive because there's been a problem."Ricardo turned to face them. "What problem?" The slim guy pointed at the side of Elena's car."Our new employee here bashed Miss Daniel's car and then spoke rudely to her."The other guard rolled his eyes. He knew his colleague was lying but was helpless as he couldn't just inte
Eating the Humble PieCALEB'S POVA few days after the bike incident, Caleb received a phone call from an unknown ID. It was strange because he hadn't given any outsider his private phone contact. Only close friends and family members had this particular phone line. He was at the office looking through some reports on the computer when the call came in. Cautiously, he pressed the receiver button and placed it against his ear. He didn't say a word and neither did the caller. After what seemed like an eternity, the anxious voice of a female chimed from the other end. "Hello!" she said. "Is that Caleb on the line?" Caleb stirred. The voice sounded familiar. He would recognize it even in his sleep. It was the slam-bang voice of Elena. "Hi, Miss Daniels," he replied in an unenthusiastic tone. "How did you come by my private phone line?" "Oh, come on, Caleb. Don't be too formal. Aren't we old friends?" "No Miss, we aren't. In fact, I don't remember ever being treated as someone fam
THE CONFUSION HEIGHTENS Caleb noticed the silent pleas in Elena's eyes and started to feel sorry for her. But he couldn't let her off that easily otherwise she'd have learned nothing."Did Mr Pérez mention something about fixing my bike?"He was observing her closely to see her reaction. If Jose did mention repairing his bike, he also must have told her about the open apology. "Yes, he did," she replied hesitantly."So?" "I am willing to take responsibility for the damage to the bike." "And?" "And fix it I mean." Caleb was wondering why she was suddenly being petulant. "Seems to me like you're struggling between preserving your pride and keeping your job." "Caleb," she spoke his name firmly. The tone of her voice made him bolt upright. "I have apologised a thousand times to you. And if you want, I could apologise a million more. But making a scene before the entire staff of your company is a bit extreme." Caleb chortled. "A bit extreme you say? So embarrassing me in front o
THE UNEXPECTED TURNAROUND Getting to work the following morning, a group of men in blue uniforms was waiting to meet with Caleb. As soon as he entered the reception, the brunette secretary, Sofia, told him he had visitors. "These men are here to see you, sir." "Who are they and what do they want?" "I have no idea. They were insisting that they wanted to speak with you directly." "I can only attend to one person. The rest of them should wait at the lounge," Caleb said and started up to his office. Just as he ascended the stairs, his phone buzzed. Elena Daniels was calling. Caleb answered. "Good morning! I assume the team of experienced engineers I sent over to fix your bike has arrived." Elena said coldly. Before Caleb could respond, she went on. "I also like to think you received my letter of yesterday from your secretary." "Good morning, Miss Daniels..." "The engineers are there to examine the damage to your bike and also fix it. Kindly permit them. Thank you!" Elena con
BUSTEDThe very next random file he picked up and cross-checked had a hundred billion dollar (100,000,000,000) amount recorded for Vaseline and Liquid Bath Soap production, meanwhile, in the computer, it was input as one hundred and twenty billion dollars (120,000,000,000). Caleb noted the file with a red marker and kept it aside.By the time he had gone through about 15 files, Mr Benson who was sweating in his seat despite the cold afternoon weather which indicated the beginning of autumn, could no longer hold it in. "Why are you keeping some of the files separate?""It's for double-checking with the accounts department after I'm done here," Caleb replied without looking away from the screen. "And why do you need to do that, young man?" "Nothing personal, sir. Just company protocol."He stood up and walked to the desk where Caleb was sitting. "Listen, I know you're new here. And as a new employee, you may want to prove yourself as competent and ept to your employer. But I can as
THE DATE "I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams that a mere assistant could hold me to accountability in my place of work." Miss Jonas expressed in annoyance. She was good-looking, educated, intelligent and smart. She earned her place in Dezani Cosmetics with her brains and wealth of experience. But after what happened that afternoon, it appears she was going to need something more to outsmart Caleb if she hoped to remain relevant in the company. She and Mr Benson had agreed to a secret meeting after the close of work that day to discuss their next move to stop him. They were hanging out in a small clubhouse somewhere downtown. "He needs to be set up and taught a lesson." Mr Benson said, blowing out a puff of smoke from the cigar dangling between his fingers. "I've noticed he has a weakness for women?" Liliana murmured under her breath. Mr Benson's eyes narrowed. "Is that right?" She nodded. "You should see the way he drools whenever he sees me." He felt a stab
THE DEAL"You could cooperate with me to enable the company to recover those monies or you could feign ignorance and be accused of complicity in the court of law." Caleb said matter-of-factly while giving Liliana a penetrative stare. She shifted uncomfortably in her chair. All of a sudden, she was feeling self-conscious and cold. But the coldness had nothing to do with the weather.Liliana felt trapped. When she first noticed the irregularities in the records, she was due for a promotion at the time and the position was highly contested by two others: Mr Juan Salvador and Mr Daniel Sergio - both of which were highly connected. She was just a young colleague with a good CV so she had to give in to Mr Benson's demands to garner support for her. The position had come down to whoever won the majority vote. It was the only wise thing to do as Lord Dezani always emphasized due diligence and not favouritism. So when the boss went to Mr Benson for advice since he's the oldest amongst the
THE ENDCaleb went to DeZ Cosmetics the next day with some men from the ministry to reopen the place. He still remembered a few of the staff there and began to call them one by one.Mr Apollo, the company's supervisor, was the first person he called. "Hello Mr Apollo, this is Caleb. Caleb Dezani. I'm calling from DeZ Cosmetics and I am in the office right now. Do you mind reporting to work?"The man grunted in disbelief. "But the company was closed down two days ago. And you no longer work there. Last I asked, I was told you took over as the CEO of another company." Caleb laughed. "Well, that last part is true. However, the company was under dispute and has now been resolved. I have reclaimed it as the rightful CEO and want you to return to work. Please while coming, do well to call others to report to work too. I shall be waiting at the reception hall."But Mr Apollo didn't call anyone until he got to the company and found out for himself that the place was indeed reopened. It was a
THE TRUTH IS OUT It felt like a nightmare as the black police Hilux which carried Madam Rebecca drove into the ministry. Her heart was thumping in her chest. She didn't know what to expect. She was ushered into the office by the officers who brought her with specific instructions from the inspector. Meanwhile, Caleb hadn't joined them. When the inspector asked whether he was going to the ministry from the station, he replied that he wanted his grandfather to be present during the meeting. "I need to go and pick him up at home." The two men shook hands, "Well, whatever happens, do not hesitate to ring me." "Thank you so much, Inspector. I hope we shall be able to meet and have that drink soon." The man laughed. "I will count the hours till I hear from you. Good luck!" he added. Caleb drove back home and lord Diego joined him to the ministry. Abhi couldn't follow because he had already left for work. But his stepmother, Leah, insisted on being a part of it. Caleb obliged her.
The FINAL NAIL The next man to interrogate him was the meanest of them. His face was cold and unfeeling."Why did you abandon your textile business?""I didn't abandon it.""Excuse me?""I did not abandon the business. I was defrauded and the business collapsed." "That means you went bankrupt after that?" He didn't answer. "Please can you speak up so the next person can take over?" "Not really. I had people who pulled resources together to loan me the capital I needed to rebuild my business." "And yet you didn't. Or did you?" Again he swallowed hard. "Okay, let me rephrase the question. As a businessman who was into textile, after you were defrauded and people loaned you money, did you rebuild your textile business?" "No." "So what did you do? "I went into partnership with someone in another line of business." "And what business was that?" "Cosmetics. I went into cosmetics." "Good. That will be all from me."By the time the rest of the members had interrogated him, El-Za
MAKING CONCESSIONEl-Zaki woke up for the third time since he was shot and realised he was in a different atmosphere. This new place smelled of drugs and drip water. "Where am I?" he asked no one in particular. A male nurse who was attached to him was sitting by a desk writing. He looked up and said, "You are in an infirmary. You were shot but now recovering." El-Zaki tried to look around and the effort made his head hurt. "Who shot me and which infirmary is this?" The nurse was instructed not to answer any questions past introducing himself and offering medical care. "I'm sorry sir but you shouldn't be concerned about that. You are responding well to treatment and your wound is drying up faster than expected. Please tell me if you feel any pain or want anything." The man stubbornly tried to sit up and felt a sharp pain on his side." Oh gosh! My rib!" he grunted. "Lie still," the nurse advised. He looked at his watch and said, "It's almost time for your midnight draught. It will
SLIPPING AWAYIt was Mr Ramirez calling back Caleb to tell him the men at the checkpoint said the truck was merely carrying items for charity. But Caleb knew better than to buy that lie. He remembered his own travel adventure with Pedro. How he had to hide at the bottom of Grandpa Carlos' truck loaded with cow refuse and feed for hours until they got to Woodward Valley from Greenville."But did they offload the entire truck to search?" he probed."I doubt that they did." "Okay. You should get to your hotel and remain inside. I just got info that the police team from yesterday may be visiting Cholula this afternoon." "Is that right?" "So I heard. Or better still, do not go to any hotel. Find somewhere else to lodge until you hear from me again." "But where else is safer than a hotel?" he asked feeling desperate. "I know a place. It's an old farmhouse occupied by an old couple. Fabian's grandparents." "Oh ho! Don't tell me this was your grand plan all along to make your friend see
DISCOVEREDIt was lunchtime and Caleb realised he was starving. All he had eaten the previous day was toasted bread and salad prepared by Hannah and Bella. Then in the afternoon, he didn't have time to eat as he spent it trying to help them settle down at the new place he got for them. Later that evening, he was called to be at Primo Palace and all he took was a bottle of the most expensive wine which he shared with Mr Ramirez. And later on in the night, he drank French wine as they talked. He felt his stomach growling in protest. Even Abhi heard it from his office and teased him. "When Madam Leah was begging you to have breakfast at home you said food was the least of your worries. Now the worms can't bear it anymore that they want to cause a volcanic eruption in your stomach." Caleb didn't know when he let out a burst of laughter. "You're crazy, man!" "I swear I've been so busy that I can't wait for all of this to be over so I can take a month-long vacation." "Sure. You will ne
SHOWING UPCaleb called the inspector of police, and he promptly answered. "To what do I owe this personal call?" he said cheerfully. "To a long-lasting friendship of mutual interests," he replied. Then he added, "I was hoping we could hang out maybe later in the day. What do you think?" "Oh, that would be wonderful. Let's make it eight o'clock this evening." "That's fine by me," Caleb consented. "What venue?" the Inspector asked. "FanFood Eatery." "I shall be there," the inspector promised and the call quickly ended. A notification dropped in Caleb's phone. He checked it was a text message. He hastily read through because he was behind the wheel. A delivery truck just turned up in the El-Zaki mansion. It has spent about 25 minutes inside the premises." The message read. Caleb immediately sensed something sinister. He pulled over and replied to the informant. "Have it followed and let me know its destination." The info made him feel a bit troubled. But he shrugged it off an
DOOMSDAY Everyone's attention was turned in the direction of the intruders. "Gentlemen, how may we help you?" the lady questioned. "It's more about how we may help you," Caleb responded. Barrister Crusoe kept his face down avoiding Hart's gaze. The director spoke next. "Yes, let's hear you out." "Good day, lady and gentlemen. My name is Caleb Dezani of Dezani Cosmetics," he introduced himself. The director narrowed his furrow, and the three men seated to the right of the lady gasped. The other three including the lady shone their eyes in disbelief. "You mean you're the CEO of Dezani Cosmetics!" "That's correct," Caleb said suppressing a grin at their dramatic expressions. The director went on. "How may we help you? I mean you already said it's you who wants to help us, so please, to what do we owe this August visit?" "Well, I was reliably informed that you were asking to see the original documents of DeZ Cosmetics." "Dez Cosmetics isn't the same as Dezani Cosmetics, am I
DETAINEDHart drove with bated breath heading to the ministry. He kept trying to reach his father to find out whether he was able to trace barrister Crusoe but his line remained unreachable. It was almost ten o'clock and his line wasn't still connecting. None of the bodyguards that went out with him had returned home last night. It was as if there was a conspiracy amongst them to abandon the mansion the moment their boss went incommunicado. Everyone was just acting strangely - including his mother. She had suddenly packed her bags after his father left the house telling him she was going on an emergency business trip but that she would call to inform him when to join her. "Where is this business conference, seminar, or whatever taking place?" "We'd be touring round different countries starting from Portugal. Then we'd move to Brazil and so on.""All within South America?" Hart had enquired. But she didn't give a definite answer. Surprisingly, not too long after she left for the ai
