Chapter 4

Chloe stood in front of Mr Lester, shaking like a leaf.

She had always hated the man, realising that something was off about him. The lingering stares, how he practically stripped her naked when he looked at her.

All in all, Lester rubbed her the wrong way and she did everything possible in her power to steer clear from him, except when it was unavoidable…like now.

“I asked you a question, girl!” He growled, slamming his hand on the table.

“S-sir, I-I…” Chloe stuttered, not sure what to say.

“You're dragging us back, Chloe. Both this month and the last, you failed to meet your target.” Lester said, walking around her in a predatory manner. “If you continue like this, it won't bode well for the company.”

She started to panic, reading between the lines. Ever since Chloe started working in this company, Lester had been looking for an excuse to fire her.

Tears welled up in her eyes, and she folded her hands in prayer. “Sir, please…don't do this. I promise I'll work harder and be better!”

He just shook his head, stretching his hand towards her.

Chloe flinched, moving away from his touch but he wasn't set out to touch her, rather to pick up an envelope. “Open it.”

Her heart in her throat, Chloe tore open the envelope to reveal a letter. The words ‘Severance package' jumped out at her and she immediately slammed it close. “Sir, but I thought you said you weren't firing me.”

“I'm not!” He smiled. “I'm letting you know, there's a difference.

“Please, please…Lester, I can change. I'll do better.” Chloe wasn't far from begging.

“Really?” Lester placed one leg on his desk, those beady eyes roving hungrily over her face. “There is…something that you can do.”

She was eager to find out what it was but then Lester touched her jaw, rubbing those filthy hands over it.

Suddenly the gentle caresses were over and he grabbed her arm, much too tight. “You're a good fit nothing bitch, and you're only good for what's between your legs.”

He pushed her away in anger, spreading his legs wide. “I have a proposition for you. Sleep with me tonight and you can have your job back.”

Her entire body had gone cold. Staring at Lester, she realised that he had already planned this, and sleeping with her was his end goal.

Just before she could respond, his secretary Jane walked in her too-tight skirt and her shirt which had several buttons undone.

“Sir, here's the work you asked for.” She bent over, surely giving Lester an eyeful from his vantage point.

“Thanks, Jane.” He turns to her. “So what do you say, do we have a deal?”

Her gaze darted towards Jane in fear.

“Oh, don't worry about her, Jane's cool,” Lester answered, reading her expression.

He grabbed Jane's ass, and much to her surprise, he planted a kiss on her lips.

“Jane is very happy with me, aren't you?”

Jane nods, even though Chloe detects a bit of hesitation to it. “Yes, sir.”

“You'll be very happy with me too.” He pulled away from Jane, walking towards Chloe.

She moved away in fear, trying to leave but Lesterd clamped down on her arm, halting her movements.

She screwed her eyes shut, hoping for a miracle when Lester's door blew inward and the last person she expected to see walked in.

Sean.

Sean took a quick inventory of what was about to happen, his eyes narrowing.

“Let go of her now, or you're going to regret it!” He ordered, his eyes glued on Lester's grip.

Lester snorted. “What are you going to do about it if I don't? You have a lot of nerve to dare interrupt in my office!”

Somehow Chloe managed to twist her arm free, and she ran over to Sean's side.

“Let's just go, Sean.” She begged, facing Lester. “Listen, I'm so sorry for all this. I-”

“Oh shut up!” Lester bellowed, taking one step further. “Look at both of you, poor church rats who can't even feed themselves.” Locking eyes with Sean, the derisive look in his eyes was cutting. “I've heard about how broke you are, and seeing you in person, it's obvious. You can't even afford new clothes…so sad.”

That rubbed Sean wrong and he bristled. “That's where you're wrong. I can do more than buy new clothes, I could even buy a villa if I wanted.”

Lester sputtered out a laugh. “Oh, please! Even if you save for ten years, you still can't afford it.”

Lester's door swung inward for the second time today, allowing Amelia and a dark-haired dude that Sean had never seen before.

Judging by the way, Amelia's claws were all over the guy possessively, it wouldn't be hard to say that he's her new guy.

“You should quit lying, Sean. It's not quite your forte.” She smirked, locking eyes with Lester. “You're right, he's as poor as a church rat. To think that you couldn't pay up my compensation fee which was just $1 million, you're here running your mouth that you can buy a villa?” She snorted. “What a joke.”

As if on cue, Amelia's boyfriend removed the phone from his breast pocket, handing it over to Lester.

It turns out it was a clip from their failed wedding ceremony, where he was kneeling down desperately begging Amelia to marry him.

“Wow, you're even more pathetic than I thought,” Lester commented when he was done watching. “Being a man is a thing of pride since we take charge of our surroundings.

To have a man begging like you did is wrong. You're a black mark, an example of what men shouldn't be like.” Glancing at Chloe who was cowering behind him.

“You both deserve each other, poor church rats mingling.”

Lester and Amelia burst into laughter as though that was the funniest joke ever told.

Sean felt humiliated, and spoken down by people whose net worth was not even half of what he currently had in his account.

He reached for Chloe's hand, intertwining their fingers. “You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you know?” He stared at Lester. “As for that villa, I'm going to buy it today.”
