“Stay on his heels!”
“He must not get away or you’re all getting three months in the dark!!”
These words were like adrenaline shots as he redoubled his efforts. Right behind him, the footsteps that stayed right on his heels also got faster.
“Kid, you running away will only make your father suffer more pain”.
Refusing the urge to think, he scrunched up his face and ran faster. Unknowingly, he had tears streaming down his face. The thought of his father suffering the punishment the Viceroy would pass down was like a knife stabbing at his heart but he kept running.
“Go, I’ll hold them back”
Recalling the smile on the face of the man he called father and the order that he gave, he had no words. He had turned around and ran. He couldn’t stay even if he wanted to.
Suddenly he ground to a halt as he turned around and let out a bitter smile.
‘Even though father held them back, it wasn’t enough’, he thought to himself.
The footsteps that were not too far behind arrived in a few moments.
“Stay alert, he might still be dangerous”, the man who stood in front of the group ordered his comrades. It was the man who had spoken of the punishments earlier.
This was the Captain of the Watchers. He was a ruthless man who would do anything to get the job done and now he wore a sinister smile as he looked at the boy.
“It's the end of the road now, what other tricks do you want to try?”, he taunted.
Looking at the Watchers who had come to hunt him, he help but raise his head to look at the sky.
With a heavy voice, his eyes glazed over as he looked at the sky that dyed a deep grey, a phenomenon caused by the influence of the boundaries, he said, “Nothing must happen to my father. If I survive this, you all will suffer for what you took from me”.
In the hopeless setting that was him standing in between two problematic choices; capture by the team of Watchers and The Devil’s Summit; he began mumbling some incoherent words.
“You can still threaten us? Do you really believe you will sur...”
The words got caught in his throat as he saw the boy taking steps backward at increasing speeds before he suddenly turned and jumped into the dark abyss that stood behind him.
The team of Watchers found it incomprehensible that someone would dare such a thing. The Devil’s Summit was said to be a place of death that transcended reality. Entering into it was equivalent to dying in every sense of the word as the soul of whoever died there would be destroyed.
The Captain of the Watchers had an ugly expression as he continued to stare at the entrance of The Devil’s Summit.
The fact that the boy had chosen to die in The Devil’s Summit was not the problem. The fact that he had to return to Nethilor without the boy was the part he found painful to think of.
Threatening his men with the punishment; ‘spending time in the dark’ was something he loved to do but now he would have to suffer through that as well. The thought of this made him shiver.
“Return to the city”, with a dark gaze and a heavy voice, he ordered his men.
The Devil’s Summit –
The Devil’s Summit was not a summit as far as one could visually see. It was easier to call it the word ‘deep’, no matter how you choose to describe it.
A 50km wide opening leading into the abyss with an unknown depth. It looked and felt completely ordinary even if you stood right on the edge but falling into it was the end.
In this abyss, a body continued to fall. With no impression of the depths, the body looked to be weightless.
It was a boy with dark grey hair, almost completely black. His face could easily be called handsome but at the moment, it had tears smeared all over it and this handsome looked incredibly pitiful. He was unconscious as he fell but his hands were clenched into fists that were tightly clenched, making his knuckles turn white.
This was Aiden... Aiden Tarrenblaze, the boy who had jumped into the abyss after he was cornered by The Watchers.
The depths of the abyss did not seem to be any closer but besides Aiden who was freefalling in an unconscious state, light particles started to appear.
In the darkness of the abyss, the light particles that flowed around Aiden like a small stream began to converge onto a spot, building a figure of light with an aura that felt as vast as the world.
The figure that exuded light had female features but her face could not be seen.
A sigh came from her and echoed through the abyss. The sound carried with it an ancient feeling like one was listening to the very beginning.
The woman made of light touched Aiden’s forehead before she dissipated into the light particles that soon vanished. In the darkness that soon rolled back in, Aiden remained suspended in the air but now he was no longer in freefall.
Around him, there was some sort of barrier that kept the darkness at bay. As for Aiden, his features began to change like his skin was being peeled off. His hair grew longer, turning from its dark grey color to a pure, snow-white color.
His body which had shed a lot of fair skin showed much fairer skin underneath while his face also changed, turning even more handsome, like a perfectly sculpted model.
He was already quite handsome before the transformations began but now he could only be described as the one and only Prince Charming.
When the transformation ended, a blinding beam of light shone down on Aiden and when the light faded away, he was no longer there.
Close to the Boundaries, Nethilor City –
In a dark, gloomy dungeon; the sound of key unlocking something rang out, echoing through the entire place.
Three people stood in front of a particular cell as if waiting for something after its doors were unlocked. Two of them had swords strapped to their waists while the last person had a sword strapped to his back.
There was a faint rustling like someone was trying to stand up, followed quickly by heavy footsteps that soon revealed a man who stood at a height of 6 feet and 5 inches with a muscular build that simply screamed every synonym for powerful.
This was General Tarrenblaze, Aiden’s father who had been locked up in the dungeons after he assisted his son in escaping arrest.
He had fiery red hair that cascaded down onto his shoulders. His face exuded an aura of authority and a toughness similar to tempered iron.
He had cuffs on both his hands and legs.
The two who had their swords strapped to their waists walked towards General Tarrenblaze, flanking him on both sides as they walked towards the dungeon’s exit with the one who carried his sword on his back walking behind the three.
The four maintained an eerie silence that seemed to infect wherever they passed through. Their destination was The Viceroy’s Court.
Huge double doors that were crafted from some sort of glistening metal and an exquisite inlay of gold, this was the entrance into The Viceroy’s Court. Two guards stood on either side of the doors and they could easily be described as ‘giant’. They made General Tarrenblaze’s height seem like that of a growing boy.
“Your Excellency, Fraser Tarren, father of the fiend is here per your orders".
There was a deafening silence right after the man with the sword on his back announced their arrival.
The silence stretched on for a few moments before it was broken by a deep voice.
"Enter"
The two giants immediately got to work, hauling the huge golden doors. Saying they did so effortlessly would be too much of an exaggeration but the doors were pushed open in no time.
Only one person went through the door, the other three stood outside waiting for a response.
Fraser Tarren walked in with a stoic expression on his face as the doors closed behind him.
He walked down the aisle with steady steps that echoed through the hall. If not for the chains on the cuffs put on his feet that rattled with every step he took, it seemed like he was just taking a stroll.
The hall had tall chairs on a platform raised off the ground on both sides of the aisle while at the end of the hall stood a throne exquisitely crafted with gold like the huge double doors: The Viceroy's Throne.
There were 14 chairs on raised platforms before another 7 chairs that were on higher platforms, signifying a higher level on both sides of the aisle. All of them had someone seating on them except for one of the chairs in the group of 7 that was closest to the Viceroy's throne.
The aisle was neither too long nor was it short, so a few moments was all it took for Fraser Tarren to walk up to the throne.
On the throne, the Viceroy was seated and Fraser Tarren made a light bow in greeting.
"Your Excellency".
There was no answer to this greeting but Fraser Tarren retained his bow. He did not move an inch nor did his expression change before a small sigh was heard a few moments later.
"Will you take your place on the council?"
These words were unlike what was expected. It made the hall fall into another moment of deafening silence.
At some point, Fraser Tarren had raised his head. He had a solemn look on his face as he answered with a hoarse voice.
"Okay".
Somewhere, on a rocky road, a four-wheeled carriage was parked on the side of the road with a few horses surrounding the carriage.
Two men stood there looking at something. Both men had armor on their bodies and they were soldiers.
They were examining what seemed to be an unconscious person who lay there on the side of the road when the carriage door opened.
Almost immediately, the men who sat on the horses dismounted and bowed in greeting towards the carriage.
"Your Highness", they all chorused.
He answered perfunctorily before he sauntered over to where the unconscious person was lying.
He looked at the person who lay there and he couldn't help but pause. The unconscious person had impeccable looks that made him feel inferior but he soon calmed himself. There was a difference, he had an entourage that was dedicated to protecting him while the guy was lying unconscious in the middle of nowhere.
He turned around intending to return to the carriage but he stopped after a few steps. Taking another glance at the unconscious person, "Bring him along".
This unconscious person was Aiden who ended up unconscious in an unfamiliar place.
Whatever that beam of light was supposed to do, it had inevitably dumped him on a roadside.
The carriage continued on its way after everyone was done with the interlude that was Aiden, the pretty boy.
In the vast expanse of space, Aiden's eyes opened to find himself floating toward something.
Looking at what he was floating toward, his head began to throb but he could not tear his eyes away from the sight in front of him.
In the distance, there was a bright light that shone with a colorful glow on the periphery and a bright blinding white glow at the center.
'What is causing this bright glow', he thought to himself as he squinted to reduce the glare of the light.
Suddenly, he noticed that the glow had dimmed down... No, the glow no longer affected him and as if he had phased over a great distance. He was standing right in front of the light.
He was stunned by what he saw. He saw different colored little glows flying out from what looked to be a female figure curled around a grey-colored orb that had different colors swirling around it.
"What do you think happened to him?""Your Highness, his body has signs of dark energy. He must have been corrupted as a result""In that case, how long will he stay unconscious?""I have never seen such potent dark energy. Normal people would be dead if they were in his place but his body is purifying itself. A true marvel to behold, Your Highness""As for how long he will stay unconscious, I cannot give an accurate answer, but at the rate his body purifies itself of the dark energy, I believe a few days to a week should be sufficient""You said he is an arcana?""A newly awoken one, Yes. Due to various factors, his seed has been sealed and I cannot determine what element he has an affinity for""Look after him and let me know the moment he awakens""Yes, Your Highness"The door closed leaving two people in the room with an unconscious Aiden. One of them was an old man with a white beard and grey hair while the other was a young man who stood behind the old man like the disciple he w
He could hear the murmurings of the servants, maids, and guards who lined the walls as he was led to The Viceroy's Court. He had no way to understand what happened as he had no recollection of those events. For a sixteen-year-old whose whole life had been dedicated to being the best he could be as he followed in his father's footsteps, this was a massive blow. His legs paused which led to him getting dragged along until he found his footing again. His mind was blank and his eyes unfocused until he felt the hands holding onto him leave him.His eyes focused again as he assumed he was standing in front of The Viceroy and that the trial was about to begin but what he saw was unlike what he expected. In front of him was the figure of a man he had spent his whole life working towards. This was his father, Fraser Tarren."Father", he muttered as tears streamed down his face. His head was bowed as he felt he could not look his father in the face after what had happened but what he got was tw
"Your Highness, the man you saved has regained consciousness"A servant had his head bowed as he relayed the news to the man who sat next to the window in a reclining chair made of polished wood."Tell him to visit as soon as he can", he answered without turning to look at the servant."Yes, Your Highness", the servant replied and quickly backed out of the room, closing the door with a soft click.Outside the window, there was a yard in which a girl twirled around with two swords in her hand. She phased all over the place as she attacked with her swords while an old man with white hair stood with a man who had a crown on his head as well as a woman who wore a crown as well. The two who wore crowns were The King and Queen and the old man was the Keeper of Time, Lord Ajax who had brought The Emperor's gift during the birthday party. The girl was Princess Diane who had been a recipient of the gift, Lord Ajax brought. From time to time, The King would nod with a smile while the old man ha
"What are your plans going forward?""I believe working to be an arcana is my best choice. Before that however, I need to find a way to make a living for myself"Aiden sat opposite Prince Adrian on the terrace outside his living quarters.Till now, he still had no idea what the seal on his seed was, but he could feel it weakening ever since he woke up. It was a thought that flashed across his mind every now and then.Of course, he did not understand his element yet but it must be something worth training if he could beat a bunch of savages after it was forcefully activated by burning his primordial blood essence.A library was meant to contain information and a myth was better than nothing when no one understood something. It would give him an idea of what it was he had awakened. He needed to find one."What element did you awaken?", Prince Adrian asked."I have no idea, Your Highness. The elders had checked and declared that it was the result of a failed awakening"Obviously, they we
"Dinner"This word resounded in his head. It was not that he couldn't do without food or something of that nature but his body was weak after he had been unconscious for so long. Before that, he was running for his life through the Wildlands that were found outside the city of Nethilor using the knowledge he had gained from the several trips he had made with his father on hunting and camping trips. It was the only way he could think of to shake off his pursuers. They did catch up to him in the end but before they did, he had plucked off fruits to be eaten as he ran.He washed his face and straightened his hair that had been ruffled. There was a mirror in the bathroom. He ran through his hair which was now white. He shook his head before he changed his cloth to one of those he bought earlier that day.He walked out of his room to see many of the workers in the hallway. They all looked to be heading to the same place as they walked out of the block in pairs and groups.A few glanced
The next day after meeting Warden Bo, a 'charming' guy, by the way, Aiden found his way to the royal library with his ears still ringing from the crazy shouting of Warden Bo.He had gone to the training grounds early that morning, in a bid to meet Warden Bo, as this was the most likely time he would be at the training grounds, and he was right. The only part he did not expect was for the Warden to tell him to stay and watch till the workers at the training grounds finished their morning shifts. As expected of the palace guards and the army that trained there, some of them loved to behave with some sort of superiority. An example was the incessant ordering of the workers to complete tasks that they could easily do without help or to do things that were way too hard for the workers to do without getting injured. One such example was when a tall lanky soldier, ordered a worker to hold one of the mannequin-like targets and use it to block as he attacked.Doesn't sound too hard, one would
"Your Majesty, this is blood I took from the boy His Highness, Prince Adrian saved"King Robert was surprised by what he heard as his eyebrows twitched."Blood?", he repeated."Yes, Your Majesty"He put the bottle down on the small round table before he started explaining what he meant."Your Majesty, that boy had been corrupted by a highly corrosive form of dark energy. The dark energy was potent enough to kill a normal person in a few days after making them lose their senses and turn rabid""What I found out from my initial checks was that the boy's body was somewhat special. It did not just resist the corrosion, it was actively purifying it""I was intrigued by the prospects of obtaining some of his blood to study but I stopped myself from doing so..."At this point, King Robert nodded but his gaze quickly flicked to the small bottle on the table. It was unnoticeable unless one were to be watching his face carefully."I tried to take it off my mind but this did not work and I ended
["Why won't you acknowledge me?"]The voice was tiny and felt like a child. It felt like a part of his thoughts but he could tell that it wasn't."Who are you?", Aiden immediately asked, speaking in his mind while his mouth responded to the King's questions."This is the royal physician that looked after you when you were still unconscious and his only disciple"King Robert introduced the two in one sentence.Aiden who had just raised his head had to bow again to greet the old man.He could now put a face to the man who had drawn his blood without permission.Drawing his blood to test was not something special but the fact that it had been done sneakily for some reason made things look... wrong."Thank you, sir, for your care""It was not an issue. You're welcome", the old man replied. As soon as Aiden heard the voice, he could confirm his thoughts. This was indeed the same man who had taken his blood. In that case, all this was very clear. The old man had found something strange happ
The crowd was pulled from the tragedy that the nobles caused, and some people started to point to the group suspended above them, whispering and murmuring various pieces of gossip. This was a topic that excited them all, however, the ones who were most excited for the revelation were the nobles who finally knew the people who beat them to occupy the highest floor of the tower. They did not hide the wicked grins on their faces and Aiden saw these grins on their faces. He also saw that the group were starting to descend from the sky into the midst of the crowd. That was bad and was quickly made worse when he noticed the nobles setting their hounds on the group. He could guess their thoughts. Even if the group was stronger than they were, given the position they occupied, they did not believe it and wanted to know for themselves how powerful they were. This gave Aiden a headache and his mind began to spin quickly, looking for a big enough distraction that would give the group a chance to
None could ask the other for help because each had someone attacking them, however, they were not noble scions for nothing. Despite being overpowered by the golems, they dealt some damage over time.It was not immediately obvious, but they managed to hold their own, and avoid grievous injuries even though there were several close calls. It took them each about an hour to circumvent their respective golems and deal enough damage to break through their chests.Hadrian was the first followed by Oscar shortly after with Tristan clocking in third, a few seconds behind Oscar. He was unhappy with this but he had no time to be unhappy because his face soon changed into a somber look. Oscar who had just tried to pick up the glowing multi-coloured orb was surprised to find the orb roll away from him and float up to meet the orb that came from Tristan’s golem. This also meant that the orb in Hadrian’s hand was the only one that remained.Oscar and Tristan noticed this, but they could do nothin
No one cared who had said that word because they all ran. The sight of the gray tentacles rising like pillars from the depths of the abyss was enough to scare every one of them.At the same moment, there was a rumble that spread across the skies of the city at that moment. Everyone heard it. Aiden, sitting in the restaurant was jolted from his thoughts and joined everyone else as they looked up at the ruin.He witnessed a few of the tentacles of the beast appear on the edge of the ruin as he had seen before they entered the ruin.‘That bridge, huh? They might be lucky enough to escape'.He did not care much if these people beat the ruin and made it to the temple. He had gotten his rewards and he was happy with that.Tristan and his group had immediately dashed off the bridge, but the tentacles came down on the bridge at a lightning-fast speed. This attack ripped the bridge apart, leaving just three people from Tristan’s group unscathed.Tristan’s face was painted with horror like ever
Aiden was dumbfounded. How was this a reward? It simply contradicted itself. The problem it caused was having him be a prime target for the Zaltyr, but it would also save him from them once. Then, is the mark erased once the life-saving opportunity is used?[Yes, everything returns to normal after that]This made him heave a sigh of relief. He tried to look at this from a positive perspective. This meant the mark was not meant to specifically protect him from the Zaltyr, its main purpose was to protect him from every other thing that tried to kill him.Thinking about it this way made it easier to accept the fact that he was going to be in trouble with the Zaltyr sooner or later, albeit only slightly.Elder Zarek watched Aiden go through his thoughts for a few minutes while he thought of the command he had received from The World Seed.Aiden had recovered his thoughts at this point and decided to check on his elemental seed. He was elated to see the changes to his elemental seed. The mu
None of the thirty remaining survivors was stupid and they took things as calmly as they could. There was no visible harm to resting till a problem was identified and this was something they unanimously agreed on.As they expected, there was something that was out of the ordinary and it was found after two hours of waiting. The quiet rumble that came from the depths of the chasm was enough of a wake-up call.Theo of the Arco twins was the one who made the first comment, breaking the silence. None of them believed that crossing the bridge would be easy from the start, however, the realization that some unknown danger lurked beneath was enough to bring them flashbacks of their time in the maze.“There’s something down there as well? Why is this trial so difficult?”“Good thing we were patient…”“Patient? What does that do for us?”“Theo is not completely wrong. Every stage of the trials had been harder than the last”, Oscar took a deep breath.“Indeed… Something that can cause such a ru
“You just had to jinx it?”Raven rolled her eyes in response. The orb glowed and the rubble spread across the hall was drawn to it. One piece after the other, they mashed together and barely a moment later, a statue had formed. This statue looked the same as the ones they fought before, save for a few important differences. One, this new statue was massive, at least three times as tall. Two, the statue now had a weapon – A halberd which it swung around. Three, most importantly, it had lines running all over its body. Looking close enough these lines were runes just like the ones Aiden and the rest had, but these were very close to being complete, easily dwarfing the ones they had.Their expressions turned grave as the glowing eyes of the massive statue locked onto them.It was a golem, and it wasted no time. With a roar that sounded like thunder, it wielded its halberd and charged at them. There was no running from it, because, a sweep of its halberd made the hall feel claustrophobi
Raven who had suggested was the first to move, and the moment she did, everyone else followed her one after the other. They got to the stone coffin amidst their careful creeping without any problems. The unnerving feeling that they felt from the statues kept them on their toes as they expected everything to go wrong at any moment. "Now what", Raven asked. Aiden and Connor stepped here, and as he instructed; "Keep an eye out", the two of them pushed the lid off the stone coffin. They were right to be worried, because the moment the stone coffin opened slightly, light burst out of the opening. They were taken aback by this absurd light show, however, the light was like a tonic, one that breathed life into the surrounding. Life into the several warrior statues that lined the walls. Each of their eyes opened with a snap, glowing a bright orange, followed by cracks that came from the loosening of the joints on the statues. Gadiel was the first to speak regret about the situation, but
With Aiden and Connor leading the way, they stepped onto the rope bridge. The silence that fell on them at that was quite unnerving, but it helped them keep their focus. This meant that their reactions were spot on as they responded immediately to Aiden making any signals. This was the moment that they finally understood the danger that lay in the chasm beneath them. Apart from the scary chasm that looked like a bottomless pit, a sight that already promised them death should they fall into it, there was something else living in the chasm, and the dreadful atmosphere it brought with evidence of its existence sent chills running their spines. The conclusion here was very simple, there was trouble and they needed to be careful.Listening carefully, they heard the silent rumbles gradually fade away, taking with it the tense atmosphere they felt. You would expect Aiden to make a sudden dash to get across as quickly as possible, but he didn't. He was taking no chances, so continued steadily
"Three days?!", Raven started."Oh, don't get worked up, it was more like two and a half days", Princess Eleanor chipped in.Unfortunately, this did not change the reaction Raven had; in fact, her reaction got worse at that moment as she got frantic and almost lost her mind as she looked around."Calm down, Raven. Things are not as bad as you think. We are out of the grassland maze; of course, we had to wait for everyone to de-petrify before we continued…", Deirdre explained."So, what trial do we have now?", Raven asked and immediately got a response."Oh, the long rope bridge, strung across the chasm that has a tentacled beast living in it", Deirdre responded like that piece of information was of no consequence.Raven was silent as she stared off into space for a moment. When she got her mind back, she asked almost immediately… "Are we crossing now that I am awake?"A question to which Princess Eleanor answered in a snarky and sarcastic tone… "Hopefully". Her comment got a few gazes
