chapter 11

Nathan's POV

Downstairs, Scott was already waiting for Nathan when he arrived. Spotting his brother, he couldn't help but whistle, appreciating his good looks.

His brother looked hot and handsome. If there was one thing Scott was known for, it was being good at surprising people.

The suit Scott had on matched the one he had chosen for Nathan. Dressed like a winter prince, he stood in a blue tuxedo and a white fur coat, holding a black one fur, drapped in one of his arms.

Nathan felt like the brothers might share clothes since they were twins, often dressing alike for events.

Back in high school, he saw a video of the Hayes twins showing up at an event, looking exactly the same, from their clothes to their hairstyles. The Hayes twins really do like twinnin'!, He thought.

Looking at Scott now, he noticed that Scott appeared quite the opposite of what he had claimed earlier.

Nathan rolled his eyes and gagged, "I thought you didn't want me stealing the spotlight," he said as he descended the stairs.

In response, Scott scoffed, "I try not to make an effort, but somehow I always end up looking too good," he said with a smile.

Nathan found himself returning the smile, realizing he was growing rather fond of Scott and enjoyed seeing him happy. Was he somehow sensing Nathan's emotions? He pondered this as he raised an eyebrow, admiring Scott's good looks.

" Wipe that grin off your face. We'll be late if we don't leave now," Scott teased, causing Nathan to laugh.

"What? A guy can't appreciate good things," he teased back, catching the black fur coat Scott tossed at him.

"Gross, I'm your brother," Scott laughed, taking the lead as they exited the house.

Nathan shrugged into the coat, following after Scott. "Still doesn't mean I can't appreciate it when my brother is looking hot and sexy," he muttered playfully.

The banter continued as they made their way towards the black shiny Mercedes parked in front of the house.

Scott shot him a stern look, then hopped into the car parked in the front yard, shutting the door before Nathan could say something else.

Nathan shook his head, snorting, and strolled to the other side of the car. The driver gave him a nod as he opened the door for Nathan to get in.

He was a bit surprised that someone was opening a car door for him, and even the driver seemed uneasy looking at him while he stood there staring at the man.

"Nathan, get in!" Scott's voice echoed from inside the car.

Nathan flashed a tight-lipped smile at the driver before entering and closing the door. He had to get use to living like Nathaniel Hayes, this was now his life.

He was no longer Lucas the poor guy from nowhere, but Nathaniel Hayes, heir to the Hayes empire and brother to Scott Hayes. He was one of the rich and he had to act like that.

Leaning back on the comfy leather seat of the car, he sighed and closed his eyes for a moment.

Feeling the engine start, the car rolled out of the front yard onto the road. Nathan remained still for a few minutes before opening his eyes.

Scott was giving him a concerned look when he opened his eyes.

Nathan sighed, anticipating Scott's question. "I'm fine," he assured before Scott could ask.

Scott was a mother hen and would always notice when something was wrong. He wanted to tell the guy to quit worrying over him ever second but he couldn't bring himself to say the words, especially when he saw the worried look on Scott's face.

"Sure? You looked off earlier..." Scott inquired with a worried expression.

Nathan agreed with a nod. It's normal to feel a bit weird when you go from being poor to suddenly having lots of money.

"Yeah, I was just thinking about how I have to get used to everything tonight," he admitted honestly.

That was a honest worry of his. How he had to act around the high class, what he was supposed to say. Was he even allowed to drink their expensive wine? He thought.

Scott reassured him, saying, "I'll be with you, so don't worry. If you feel tired or uncomfortable, just let me know, and we can leave right away."

Nathan looked at Scott, taken aback and saw that his brother was serious. He smiled and nodded. It felt good to know Scott would be there with him at the event because he could not guarantee that things would not go wrong.

Looking out of the car, he noticed the scenery changing as the car drove by. They were no longer in the busy city anymore, but in the fancy part of town where only rich people hung out.

The car started slowing down, driving at a slow pace as it joined a line of shiny luxurious cars driving towards a huge building; the Central Hemisphere building.

This was the first time he was seeing the building with his two eyes even though he had seen pictures of the building on TV and the papers. If anyone had told him that he would be attending a charity gala in the building, he would have laughed at the person, but here he was.

The building hosting the gala was impressive, standing tall with a red carpet rolled out at the entrance.

Nathan spotted more luxurious cars like theirs pulling up at the entrance of the building, and rich people wearing expensive dresses walking down the red carpet into the building.

Nathan gazed at the grandeur of the event, feeling a bit overwhelmed. He turned to Scott, who was engrossed in his phone. He wondered who Scott was talking to every single time he was typing away in his phone.

" Can you stay off your phone for at least one hour? Who are you always talking to…" he muttered.

Scott snorted, " I get that you want to act all big brother on me tonight. You've been itching to scold me but please, get off my back" he fired back.

No, he wasn't trying to act like a big brother, he was simply nervous and needed to talk to someone to ease his nerves. Nathan decided to take a new approach.

"Who exactly are we expecting at this event?" he asked, sudden nervousness creeping in.

Scott looked up, as if sensing that he was nervous, he sighed, "Every influential person in the country. The big shots and nitty-gritty of society." He explained.

"So, everyone who's someone is coming tonight," Nathan mumbled more to himself.

Scott nodded, affirming, "Yes, Nathan."

Nathan let out a sigh, rubbing his hands together. Accepting the invitation to escort Scott to the charity gala seemed like a good idea when he agreed. Now, being there, it felt like it might not have been the best decision.

As their car pulled up at the entrance, his door swung open before he could utter a word.

Nathan took a deep breath as he stepped out, needing a moment to adjust to the bright lights and flashes from various cameras that filled his vision.

The reality of being surrounded by influential people sank in, making him sense a mixture of excitement and anxiety.

Scott stood ready on the other side, greeting Nathan with a smile. "Remember, if you feel tired, just let me know, and we can leave right away," he said, extending his hand.

Nathan nodded, taking hold of Scott's hand. It felt good having a brother that he could rely on.

'Breathe and walk, you own the stage,' Nathan silently coached himself as he stepped alongside Scott on the vibrant red carpet.

Despite the bombardment of questions from reporters, the different eyes that were on him and the flashes from cameras, Nathan focused on the path ahead, comforted by Scott's presence. Climbing the stairs, he gracefully navigated the attention around them.

Curiosity surrounded Nathan due to his remarkable recovery from a coma. Everyone wanted to know how he was doing after waking up from a ten years coma.

Numerous broadcasting stations had sought interviews with him, eager to share his story, but Scott had declined all the invitations, prioritizing Nathan's well-being.

The red carpet journey became a blend of overwhelming attention from everyone and the reassuring support of his brother.

Now that he was out in the world, Nathan found himself immersed in the realm of the rich and powerful, led by Scott, who confidently navigated the surroundings.

Scott guided them through another door, revealing a spacious hall filled with a swarm of people.

The music echoed in Nathan's ears, creating an atmosphere he wasn't used to. Despite the magnificence, a sense of unease crept over him. He felt like he didn't belong.

Before he could express his thoughts to Scott, someone in the crowd caught his attention – someone he anticipated seeing at the event, as Scott had mentioned that all the noteworthy individuals in the society would be present.

Even amidst the crowd, he managed to spot her – his ex-wife, Piper Ross.

She stood gracefully like the devil she was, twirling a glass of champagne in one hand and the arm of another man in the other. Nicholas Rivers was no doubt showing off his girlfriend.

As Piper turned, their eyes locked, and an unexpected sense of purpose filled Nathan.

Suddenly, the idea of leaving didn't appeal to him anymore.
