EARLIER, the church was full of noise as the guests chit-chatted among themselves, creating a lively buzz. But as soon as August spoke, an eerie silence swept across the room. Tension crackled in the air, thick and oppressive.

“Who is he?”

“How can he ask someone’s fiance to marry him?”

“Is he crazy?”

The visitors' whispers and inquiries about August were like daggers, stabbing into him. However, August found it ridiculous that nobody had recognized him until now. 

Or maybe they had, but it was hard to believe that Augustus Fordman, the pathetic commoner they had known, could be wearing an expensive suit and looking rich as hell.
