Chapter 100- Double cross

Daniel sat in his jail cell, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and guilt. The days had passed in a blur, and he had lost track of time. The clang of metal echoed through the corridor as an officer approached. The door creaked open, and Daniel squinted in the sudden light, barely comprehending the words that followed.

"You're free to go," the officer said. "Charges were dropped. No explanation given."

Daniel's heart pounded in his chest as he stepped out into the harsh sunlight. The air tasted different, freedom an unfamiliar sensation after the darkness of his cell. He walked, his steps heavy with uncertainty, until he found himself standing before the remnants of the old man's farm.

His heart sank as he took in the devastation. The burnt-out remains of what was once a thriving home, a place of hard work and dreams. His gaze fixed on the spot where the barn once stood, his thoughts a tumult of regret and remorse.

"Sir," Daniel murmured, his voice a hoarse whisper. "I'm so sorry."
