Mr. Blackwood looked at her, his eyes full of sadness. "I understand," he said.

Mr. Blackwood sat by the window of their bedroom, his eyes fixed on the ocean under the moonlight. Mrs. Blackwood slept soundly, her dark hair fanned out across the pillow. Gently, Mr. Blackwood brushed a strand of hair from her face.

He knew that Mrs. Blackwood had married him for his money, and that she might not stick around if she knew the truth. But he also knew that if he could keep her bound to him, she would stay. He couldn't bear the thought of her leaving him alone, his heart aching at the thought. Yet he knew he couldn't tell her the truth, for it would put her in danger.

Mr. Blackwood closed his eyes and tried to clear his mind. But the memory of that fateful night kept playing over and over again, like a broken record. The night he had vowed to avenge his sister's death, no matter the cost.
