Dorian's lack of reaction was more unsettling than if he had become angry or sad. His neutral expression left Nancy feeling anxious and unsure. She was afraid that he might be angry with her, but she couldn't tell for sure.

As she huddled behind Mrs. Blackwood, she heard the sound of laughter and music from the ballroom. It was a stark contrast to the quiet and tense atmosphere where she stood. She wished she could go back to playing and dancing, but she knew that was impossible now.

Dorian's expression softened, and he turned to Nancy. "I'm sorry if I upset you, that was not my intention," he said. "I was just... surprised by your appearance."

Nancy looked up at him, tears still in her eyes. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable," she said. "I just wanted to look nice."

Nicklaus stepped in. "You look lovely, my dear," he said. "It's just a bit of a change from your usual attire."
