Repercussions

The night lights lit up the extravagant Smith family mansion.

Morraine stood awkwardly next to Ava, as the family gathered to hear if she had struck the deal with the VP,

"Well, Morraine, tell us how exactly is this Jonah's fault?" George, the head of the family and Ava's eldest uncle asked glaring at Morraine

"It's that bastard's fault. If he wasn't there to interfere, we could have signed the deal with the VP"

The entire family gasped in extreme shock

Everyone stared at Morraine with bewilderment. They couldn't believe her atrocious tongue. There was no way Jonah would have been able to stop her from signing the deal with the VP.

Was she trying to take them for fools?

"That loser is probably the VP's driver. It's because of him the VP refused to sign the contract, he must have told him not to sign with us. I always knew we never should have allowed that backstabber into this family, or at least we should have kicked him out of the mansion much sooner"

"It's a good thing that he's no longer a part of this family" Morraine shouted angrily

"What do you mean he's not a part of this family?" George hurled the wine glass in his hand to the floor and growled, interrupting his sister-in-law's rants

He marched forward angrily and said "Let me remind you, Jonah Smith is very much still a part of this family until he divorces your daughter. So, this is your fault!" George yelled; his eyes furrowed indignantly

Immediately Morraine retraced her steps, she glared in disdain and said "I apologize, I'll call him back tomorrow and make sure their divorce is finalized and he gets out of this family for good"

The next morning, Jonah was awoken by the noisy ring of his phone

He patted his bed, looking for the phone

'God, who calls this early?' He muttered and then answered the call. Before he could say anything, the ear-piercing annoying voice of his mother-in-law echoed in his ears

"Listen very carefully" she growled immediately Jonah picked up

"You're going to come back and apologize to the family for sneaking in and using Grandpa as an excuse, I know you sneaked in there and this had nothing to do with paying homage", and immediately hung up

Jonah fumed angrily but then took a deep breath and got out of bed. He carried his cigarette pack and pulled one out, lit it, and took a deep drag

He knew something was fishy when Morraine called him back to the same family house she kicked him out of

She connived with Ava's younger sister Caitley to frame Jonah, accusing him of molesting her. This was her last attempt at getting Ava to divorce Jonah, after trying endlessly

Morraine was indignant that her daughter insisted on staying married to her useless son-in-law, so she hatched up this plan to get Ava to sign the divorce,

Finally, she gave in to her mother's and sister's hatched story, out of disappointment, she agreed to the divorce, and Jonah was kicked out of the family

However, there was still a month left before their divorce was final, and Jonah couldn't help but wonder if this was another trap

He shook his head decidedly and then hurried to the bathroom, after a few minutes he hailed a cab and headed to the Smith mansion

When Jonah arrived at the mansion, he saw Vic getting off his BMW 550 series, and heading into the mansion.

Vic Francis was a man who was always pursuing Ava despite her married status. The Francis family was one of the prominent families in the Upper social circle of Eldrege City, which was more powerful than the Smith Family.

Morraine always wanted to get on their good side, so immediately after Ava signed the divorce papers, she tried to set her up with Vic

When Ava married Jonah, Vic was very frustrated and irritated about how such a beauty goddess married a loser. He felt he was the better man for Ava, so immediately after he heard she had finally divorced the loser, he started doting after her again

When he saw Jonah, he straightened his suit and said mockingly

"Are you here to see the face of the man who's currently dating your wife?", Vic taunted, and then his face abruptly changed as his brows turned into a frown and his lips curled indignantly

"I always despised you for marrying Ava, she deserved better, not a poor loser nobody like you, I can give her so much more than you ever could, I can't wait for this divorce to be finalized"

Jonah clenched his fist angrily. He wanted to beat this arrogant Vic but withheld his anger and decided not to cause more trouble

They knocked on the door at the same time and Morraine opened the doors to her house with a warm smile, showering Vic with kind words, after all, he was just the type of in-law she'd been looking for

"How are you dear?" She said delightfully and welcomed him into the mansion,

When she shifted her gaze towards Jonah, her eyes turned cold and empty as she spoke "Come in!" She sneered at him

"Morraine, why is this loser here?" Vic blurted without any regard for Jonah's feelings

"Oh, he's just here to get some of his things" Morraine replied casually,

"Why don't we all have breakfast together?" Vic suggested with a hint of disdain and mischievous sneer

Jonah's face was inexpressive as Vic was insulting him, he couldn't care less. He walked around observing the house he had bought for his wife

"Care to join us, Jonah?" Vic said shifting his gaze at him with a sinister smile

"Of course," Jonah replied absentmindedly

When they settled on the table, Vic broke into a large smile and quickly blurted "Ava, did I tell you that my company just doubled their revenue the year under my management?", he said and shot Jonah an icy glare

"Yes, I just got my new car with the bonus. It is quite the beast, you should see the horsepower on that car", Vic boasted. He wanted to belittle Jonah in every aspect in front of Ava and show her he was the better man for her

"That's great Vic, congratulations! Your company is lucky to have you, and so is my daughter to find such an amazing, wealthy, and prominent man, unlike that loser there who can't even afford a car", she said flattering Vic with her words, then turned to Jonah and sneered

"This is what a real man looks like"

Jonah heaved a sigh of regret and dismay; he didn't wish to be with the Smith family any longer than they wanted him gone

He was about to say something when Vic laughed, and said "Ava would you like to go the movies with me?"

Ava did not know how to respond at first. She gazed sheepishly at Jonah, and when she saw his inexpressive attitude, she was disappointed again

Maybe he had not changed afterall, she thought, and accepted Vic's offer which only made him more relentless in bashing out insults toward Jonah
