Maya gazed down into her wine glass, swirling the ruby liquid pensively. Clara's proposal to join forces against Ethan had caught her off guard, but also awakened troubling doubts she could no longer ignore.

She raised her eyes to meet Clara's intense, searching look. "Your offer is enticing for many reasons. But earning Ethan's trust was no easy feat. If he ever suspects me of betraying him..."

"He needn't ever know of this conversation," Clara said earnestly. "We would be the utmost discretion." She extended her hand across the table in appeal. "Ethan has brought much pain to both our families. Together, perhaps we can protect ourselves and those we love from further harm."
