The shower was still on, but the water actively avoided him. It was as though a thick, invisible layer was wrapped around his body, keeping it at bay. It didn't matter how he tried to touch the steaming water since the strange barrier moved with him.
Callum choked as his heart pounded, and the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. There was an electrifying sense of power in the air that reeked of danger. It was then that a dull green glow in the corner of his sight drew his attention as he struggled to calm the raging storm within.
What the hell is that? Callum stared at his grandfather's ring sitting on the edge of the sink while painting the bathroom in the eerie green light. He could see lines on the dull gold of the same colour as the light while a pattern of circles and lines decorated the onyx.
The power the ring exuded resonated with Callum. It was as if a siren was calling out to him, begging him to wear it.
He couldn't help but wish he would wake up or that this was all a hallucination caused by his grief. However, no matter how he wanted to deny it, his brain told him this was reality. His hand trembled as his body moved as though it had a mind of its own. Each heavy step brought him closer to the unknown phenomenon.
Callum's eyes widened as he reached for the ring, but another unbelievable thing happened before he could grasp it. The ring rattled on the ring as it edged its way toward his outstretched hand before it flew onto the ring finger of his right hand of its own accord.
A gut-wrenching wail filled with the promise of pain filled the bathroom as a metallic taste coated Callum's tongue. The green pattern on the ring turned blood red as its energy invaded his veins.
Like a deadly snake slithering beneath his skin, the foreign substance followed them up his arm, across his chest, and then up his neck to his brain. Callum's skin itched like crazy as he felt like he was burning from the inside out. At the same time, the energy shifted colour to a dark grey.
He collapsed to the ground and curled up in the fetal position as his screaming continued. Desperate for relief, he struck his head with his fist in an attempt to drive the energy out. However, his mind continued to deliver a pain on par with it being put in a blender.
Vomit escaped his mouth and nose as his psyche finally snapped, falling unconscious to protect himself from the pain. If anyone else had been there, they would have seen the energy turn a dull gold after an hour. His wounded knuckles and the cut on his arm healed at a rate visible to the naked eye, leaving his skin without a mark or scar.
At the first rays of dawn, the golden energy withdrew from Callum's body into the ring, and a few minutes later, his eyes fluttered open. As the blurriness cleared from his sight, he frowned at the dull gold text box floating before him.

[You have 1 New Message...]
When Callum finished reading the strange messages that made him think of a computer log, he focused on the last entry.
[Open Inbox? Y/N]
Yes. The thought happened quicker than Callum could think, and in the next moment, his heart leapt into his throat. A lonely message sat in the inbox, titled From Me To You. However, it was his grandfather's name marked as the sender that fueled his emotional turmoil.
Callum bit his lower lip, uncaring of the weirdness of it all if it meant he could reconnect with the man who raised him just one more time.
Open.[Dear Callum,
I hoped this day would never come. Since you're reading this, something must have happened to trigger your awakening. I'm sorry for whatever you have just been through, and that I can't be there for you anymore. Just know that everything you need to get accustomed to your new self is stored in my ring.
When you didn't awaken before your sixteenth birthday, I prepared our family's magical legacy in the enchantment I placed on it. It was set to trigger in the event it detected an awakening of a member of our bloodline. It will guide you, and prove to be an invaluable tool in the days to come. Get familiar with what it has to offer as soon as possible. Your life may depend on it.
There's only so much I can say without clouding your judgement with my own thoughts. But you should know there are others like you, and this world isn't as simple as it seems. A friend of mine will contact you soon, and help guide you. No matter what, you can't allow our legacy to fall into someone else's hands. Promise me.
This ring is my final gift to you. I hope it will help you find where you belong in your darkest days. Know that I will always love you.
Goodbye, Cal. Stay safe.]
Warm tears fell from Callum's eyes as he stifled his sobs. Uncertainty blew his thoughts around in his mind as he wondered if he had snapped. That was the only explanation he could think of as he replayed everything over and over again.
However, the sound of the birds outside, and his grandfather's message still hovering in the air begged to differ. He slowly got dressed in the new clothes Dani had bought him before choosing to believe in his grandfather one last time. Even if it turned out to be a mad delusion of his own making.
It took Callum a few minutes to make a coffee, unfortunately there was no milk since nobody had lived there for a few weeks. As he sank into the couch in the living room, he swore to make something of his life. To prove everyone who doubted him wrong. Let's see what this thing can do. Show me my inheritance.
Callum gripped his now empty mug as he stared at the text boxes in mid-air. After playing around with it for a while, he realised it worked as an interface similar to a computer or videogame. Except the input came directly from his thoughts. It seemed to have been set to only unlock certain information in the Archives after he had read through the basics, which served as an introduction to being an Awakened. That's the term for people like me who have awoken their talent for magic. Callum sighed into the empty mug as deep frown lines appeared on his forehead. He glanced at the introductory text again, where it described the process of identifying which of the six magical elements he was naturally attuned to. It refused to go beyond that point, and he assumed the enchanted ring on his finger was waiting for him to perform the task. This is stupid, but I've already come this far, so why not?A few moments after searching the house, Callum sat down again. This time, he placed a glass of
Sweat ran down Callum's forehead as he attempted to manipulate his mana again. It had taken him several attempts to get the feel for changing the shape.Unfortunately, he found he had to use his hands as a crutch, and could only manipulate the shape by moving his fingers like a puppeteer. Damn, this is hard. He could guess that with practice he would eventually be able to do it using only his mind. However, that thought only made him more frustrated since he couldn't do it right now. This should be enough. He could feel his mana taking the form of two hands, but the flip side of that was the rest of the mana around him becoming thinner. So, if I think of it as a liquid and the shape is the container, it's obvious the extra mass would have to come from somewhere.Something seemed to click when Callum realised that. There was a clear limit to how much mana he could use. Instead of trying to force out more from a dry well, it would be better to use the unneeded mana from elsewhere.Sudd
Cairo, Egypt:A middle-aged man leaned against a wall and began crying as he touched the single blue bead hanging from a black string around his neck. The mana is agitated. He sighed as he looked up at the clear blue sky. The Major Arcana is complete once again. The world is in danger. His shoulders dropped as he vanished into a dark alley.Tokyo, Japan:It's time. A smile appeared on the young woman's face as she pulled her long, silky black hair into a ponytail. The question is, which way will the winds blow?Edinburgh, Scotland:A young Nepali woman held her grandfather's arm as he trembled while they disembarked from the plane."Is everything alright?" She asked, her brow knotted in concern."Everything's fine. There's no need to worry. Hurry along and see if our taxi is here. I'll be along in a moment."He smiled as he watched his granddaughter, who was also his only apprentice, hurry away. A grimace washed the smile from his face as his eyes fell on the floor. This shouldn't hav
"What the fuck!" Callum roared as he looked around the kitchen, expecting to see the guy pop out of nowhere. "What just happened?"He would've thought it was a bad dream or that he'd gone crazy if it weren't for the ice shards on the floor and the broken glass of the door. Callum took several deep breaths while trying to calm his pounding heart while remaining vigilant.Suddenly, the sounds of the outside world returned. It must be over. Callum wasn't sure why he thought that, but he was certain it was right. Before he could celebrate, he heard the dreaded sound of footsteps in the hallway. Please, no!"Quick, Maya, check the kitchen." The old voice Callum heard moments before the attack shouted.Callum frowned as a young Nepali woman with straight black hair appeared. It took a moment for her to scan the damage before noticing Callum off to the side. Her eyes went wide for a moment before a bright smile lit up her face."He's here! And he's alive!" Maya called over her shoulder."Hmm
Callum watched the scenery go by as the train rumbled along the tracks. He was lost in thoughts since Dani had seemed angry when he called her. He'd given her the excuse that he needed to get away from everything and had decided to move to London for a while.Naturally, she tried to talk him out of it. She argued he shouldn't make such big decisions while his emotions were a mess. Dani only gave up when he told her he was already on a train and that he would be staying with a family friend."Hey," Maya grunted to get Callum's attention. "You need to focus. You heard Grandpa, you need to refine your mana and deepen your understanding of magic before we reach The Clocktower.""Sorry," Cal smiled. "You're right. What element do you suggest I start with?""Huh?" Maya raised an eyebrow at the ridiculous question. "How many elements are you attuned with? Two? Three?"Maya's voice rose an octave with each number she said. However, before she could get an answer, Master Gurung sitting next to
"What the" Maya blurted out when she felt the temperature around them dropping. "How? It's not even been an hour yet!"Callum chuckled at her expression which looked like she had eaten something sour. He swore a smirk on his face as he shrugged."It's not that difficult. I'm sure Master Gurung wouldn't have asked me to do something he didn't think I'd be capable of."It was a loaded statement. After all, Callum was certain it was something that should be beyond the level of someone who didn't have the answers. He only said it like that to see what reaction the old man would have. However, Master Gurung didn't even bother opening his eyes as he nodded. Damn. Either Grandpa told him what our legacy is capable of or he already had his suspicions. If it's the first then it's not a big deal. But if it's the second...Callum chewed on the implications of that question for a moment. Then he's testing the limits of The Magician by using me as a test subject. He could only trust his Grandpa'

He had managed to raise his fire-related stats by 3 and his air-related ones by 1. Unfortunately, the train had become busier which brought a halt to his training to prevent anyone from noticing the anomalies caused by it.After arriving in London, they had taken a taxi. Callum had fully expected to be brought to Big Ben considering the organisation was called The Clocktower. However, they stopped outside an old antique shop that nobody glanced at twice."Hey, why are we here?" Callum asked Maya as Master Gurung paid the driver. "I don't know." Maya shrugged. "It's my first time in London outside of airports."Callum grimaced when he realised there
Callum's eyes went wide as they stepped inside the room. He had expected to find a woman behind a desk in a neat office. However, what he stepped into instead was the largest garden he had ever seen!Shrubs, trees, hedges, and flowers he had never seen were dotted around the landscape. Their colours and hues made a perfect harmony that seemed to soothe his soul. Soon, he heard the sound of birds chirping. As the fragrant scents washed over him, Callum spotted cats, dogs, foxes, bees, ants, and many other living creatures going about their business. A short distance away, a stunning woman in her early thirties sat inside an octagon-shaped white gazebo. Her light brown hair was done up in a tress, and her white day dress gave her a certain look of purity. That, combined with the scenery, made her look like a nature goddess descended to earth."My, my," The woman said with a bright smile as she turned to look at her guests. "Who do we have here? The elusive Hermit of all people! I must s
