Johnny briefly wondered if he secretly had another power at his disposal that only awakened because of the divine power system's presence. His luck today was just outrageous. It was actually kind of frightening. Well, he could have done without all the near death experiences. He was sure that he was going to have nightmares tonight if he got out of this mess.
"Who are you?" Dorothy demanded as she thrust her chin out haughtily.
Now that he actually saw someone thrust out their chin in person, Johnny thought that it looked funny. He couldn't figure out how anyone thought they looked intimidating when they looked like they were desperately trying to stretch out their neck. Well, that wasn't important right now. What was important was that she looked pissed that he hadn't said anything.
Rachel pushed back her hair as she said, "If you don't answer, you won't like what happens next."
He had no doubt that she was telling the truth, so he really hoped that his new power was in effect. "I'm Johnny Burns. I'm just a delivery man."
A strange look crossed both women's faces as Dorothy asked, "Burns, as in the Burns family?"
Johnny shook his head. "No, I have nothing to do with them. I just had bad luck having the same last name."
Neither of them looked like they believed him. It was only natural, as a powerful family like the Burns wouldn't allow someone to share their last name. They were more likely to kill him and forcibly change his last name so he wouldn't be associated with them. That went for any of the seven families. Their last names were associated with the seven elements.
The Burns family was known for having fire powers, so him getting a fire power really didn't help his case. However, if he was really part of the family, he should have been living with them all this time instead of living as an orphan. He couldn't imagine why a Burns family member would end up in the streets. Also, there hadn't been any news of a missing child. No, he couldn't be related.
"I wish I was part of the Burns family, but I really am not," he said as he kept his eyes open for any signs of trouble. "Think about it. Would I really be doing deliveries if that's the case?"
Their suspicious looks lessened as they considered his words. Johnny couldn't tell if it was because of his power or that they were thinking logically. As long as it didn't put his life in danger, either was good. Behind the two women, he saw a message appear. His eyes widened before he tried to hide expression from them, but they weren't ameuters.
The moment they saw how he was trying to hide his emotions, they immediately followed his gaze and looked behind them. They didn't see or sense anything amiss. Neither of them considered the possibility that someone could be masking their presence from them or that it was the system. Both options were impossible in their minds.
"Anyway, I would like to leave now if you don't mind," he said as he backpedaled away from them.
"We're not through with you yet," Dorothy snapped as her head spun around to face him. "You're not leaving until you answer all our questions."
Johnny could feel himself breaking out in a cold sweat. "I really don't think I can help you. The two of you would surely know more than me. I'm just a delivery guy."
His words tasted like ash on his tongue. He hated how he had to flatter them with words to avoid a beating. It was humiliating, especially since he hadn't done anything wrong. He was the victim here. If anyone should apologize, it definitely shouldn't be him. Of course, he knew that wasn't how the world worked, so he could only go with the flow.
"Then how did you survive against Roy?" Rachel asked. "I find it strange that some nobody could beat that thing."
"Luck," Johnny bluntly said.
He wasn't lying. He had really been lucky to avoid getting killed several times. If it had been someone else, he was sure that the ones in charge of cleaning would be scraping the pieces off the concrete. He would even bet that they died within minutes if he were there to watch it happen. There was no need to explain it any further.
That's when he recalled the unusual situation. "By the way, how are we supposed to leave?"
"Didn't you hear what I said?" Dorothy snapped. "You're not going anywhere."
Rachel sighed. "And you wonder why no one wants to have anything to do with you."
"Excuse me!" Dorothy snarled. "You can't talk to me like that."
Instantly, they were back at each other's throats. Johnny did the only thing he could in his current situation, which was to remain quiet and let them rip each other's heads off. If he was lucky, they would take each other out while he figured out how to get away without being caught. What he didn't expect was to be physically pulled between them.
Neither of them seemed to notice what they were doing, and they were acting like kids fighting over a toy. In this case, the toy was him, much to his annoyance. Listening to them argue, Johnny got fed up hearing all the nonsense they were thowing at each other. He was going to see if his new power could convince everyone to leave, like nothing was wrong.
"If you're done now, I have a question," Johnny said as he put up a brave front.
The duo stopped their argument as Rachel said, "Ask away."
At the same time, Dorothy spat at his feet. "Stay out of it."
Seeing that one of them was on his side, he went ahead with his question since he was confident that he wouldn't die for asking. "Why is it so quiet, and where is everybody?"
When the two women just gave Johnny confused expressions, he became highly concerned about their current situation. "I mean, it's not normal, right?"After he added that part, their expressions turned to understanding, though he didn't miss the glint in their eyes. His years of experience in customer service warned him that he should be wary of what they were about to say. Nothing good came out of it when someone had a certain look in their eyes, especially if they were young mistresses with powers."You do know that there are rules regarding fights between blessed," Dorothy said in a mocking tone."Yes, I do," he said slowly. It was a simple rule, which was to stay out of their way. Once they got into a fight, there was no way a regular human could get in between them. It would be a death sentence to try to stop them. Only another blessed could interfere. That's why he had tried to get away as soon as he could, until that crazy giant attacked him out of the blue."Then you would know
[An anomoly has occurred. Please vacate the premises immediately.]While Johnny had no clue what was going on, he knew a warning when he saw one. He didn't want to wait around and see what happened if he didn't listen to the system. Glancing back at the two women, he could see why their expressions turned ugly. It seemed very likely that they had gotten the same message and weren't happy about the news either."What do we do now?" he dared voice his thoughts out loud."We will have to get moving unless we want to be trapped here," Rachel calmly said.Johnny was anything but calm. Did she hear what she just said? She said they would be trapped in this place if they didn't leave right away. That was basically a death sentence, if he ever heard one. It was terrifying to see how calm the both of them were. That meant that this wasn't unusual and was likely a very common occurrence if they didn't bat an eye."What a pain," Dorothy said as she scratched at her head. "I hate it when that hap
Johnny didn't hear her chasing after him, so he took it as a sign that he was in the clear. Just in case, he kept walking without looking back. As he was thinking about how to get to the registration office, he groaned as he remembered how his car got totaled. Now he didn't even have a place to sleep. A sudden thought crossed his mind, and he frantically searched his pockets. He nearly screamed in frustration. His phone was gone. It must have been destroyed in the fight, along with his wallet. That was assuming they hadn't fallen out of his pockets from all the running he did. This was the worst. He literally had nothing to his name except for his clothes. Speaking of clothes, he noticed the stares he was receiving.Glancing down at his appearance, he could see why. That made why they hadn't taken a second glance at him earlier strange. He looked like he had been put through the wringer. He needed to change, but he didn't exactly have the money to pull that off. Hopefully, no one call
When the Burns family had been mentioned earlier, Johnny never thought that he would be wrong and that the two women would have been right. Seriously, he never thought he was actually part of the Burns family. Well, that wasn't entirely correct. He had considered it long ago when he was young and wishing for a family, but he had gotten over it.Now he wasn't sure how he felt about this sudden revelation. The reasons he gave Rachel and Dorothy before crossed his mind. It made no sense for them to want to contact him now unless it was because he had developed his power. He frowned at the implication. They had thrown him out because they thought he wasn't deserving to be part of the family and were now doing a one eighty. At the sight of Johnny's frown, the scarred man quickly said, "You must be wondering why we're contacting you now of all times. The reason is simple. We were unable to track you until now."Johnny found that hard to believe, and it showed on his face. The Burns family w
Johnny's mind crashed at the sudden relevation that he was the heir to the Burns family. All his life, he had been treated as scum because he was an orphan with nothing to his name. People sneered at him for having the Burns name, but with seemingly no connection to the family. He had encountered many people who implied he had done it to get attention. Now he was suddenly elevated to the status of one of the most powerful and influential people in the world. As the heir to one of the seven great families, doors that had been previously closed to him were now open. No one would able to dare look down on him ever again unless they wanted to suffer humiliation or death. It was too much for him to process.Covering his face with his hands, he vaguely heard the scarred man say, "I understand this news is very unexpected, but it's the truth. Lord Burns and Lady Burns had been desperately searching for you after your disappearance."That was easy for the scarred man to say. Johnny knew nothi
Johnny tried to ignore the whispers and stares he was receiving as he walked up to the front desk. He kind of expected this to happen. It was hard not to notice the sudden guard that surrounded him as they escorted him. Even though he had wanted them to wait until he finished, they had insisted they stay with him for his protection. The receptionist stared at him with wide eyes before asking, "How may I help you, sir?""I'm here to register," he said as he placed his hands on the counter."Of course," she said before looking at the computer. "Please tell me your name.""It's Johnny Burns," he said as he braced himself. Her hands twitched, and she looked back up at him. "Excuse me?"Before he could repeat himself, one of the guards stepped forward with a menacing look on his face. The receptionist flinched and immediately looked back down at the keyboard. As she typed away, Johnny looked back at the guard to give him an unimpressed look. The man was unphased by his reaction. Seeing no
Johnny immediately took back the words he had thought of earlier. They were as ruthless as the media portrayed them to be. At least his father was. His mother hadn't said anything bloddthirsty, but the look in her eyes made him think that she was thinking the same thing as his father. No one seemed to bat an eye at his father's threat. In fact, the scarred man bowed as he said, "Apologies, sir. We were ordered to follow his orders no matter what, and he insisted on coming here.""You should have known better," his mother snapped. "He's a young man who hasn't been raised with us. Of course he doesn't know any better."Feeling the heat coming off her body, Johnny was extremely uncomfortable with where this was going and stepped in. "No, it's my fault. I told them I wanted to meet my parents right away. I'm sorry for not dressing better."The heat that had been coming from his mother suddenly vanished as she said, "You don't have to apologize. It's not your fault. I'm so relieved that yo
Johnny wasn't sure how he did it, but he was able to talk them down from the idea. All he could recall was his parents insisting they go out to hunt down and kill every single person in his life that had caused him grief. If they actually did that, there were going to be a lot of dead bodies. While he didn't like them, he didn't hate them enough to want them dead.Staring down at the cup of tea that was served to him, he wondered if he could ask for the most expensive alchol in the house to drink. He certainly needed a drink to calm down his nerves, and staying sober was a bit difficult. His parents weren't matching the image he had for them, and all the talk about killing was making him unsettled. As he took a sip, his mother asked, "Are you sure you don't want us to take care of them?"He choked on his tea. "It's fine. You don't need to."His father nodded. "We understand. You want to get revenge yourself."Staring at his father, Johnny wondered where the man got the idea. Well, he
