Enjoy his new life his foot. Caleb wasn't sure what the system or who created the system was on, but there was no way he could possibly enjoy his new life when he was a demon rat about to be eaten by a demon wolf. He didn't even know wolves ate rats. He thought only birds did, and they were both demons too, so what was with this unfair treatment? He demanded a refund.
[Refunds are not possible.]
Caleb glared at the screen that was currently mocking him. If he wasn't worried about getting the demon wolf's attention, he would be swearing right now. However, that didn't stop him from uttering all kinds of insults in his head. When he woke up after bonding with the system, he had thought he might have gotten a lucky break, so what were his stats?
[Caleb Gonzales]
[Level 1]
[Species: Demon Rat]
[Strength: 1]
[Intelligence: 1]
[Stamina: 1]
[Endurance: 1]
[Dexterity: 1]
[Mana: 0]
It was basically telling him to drop dead with those stats. Yes, he was a rat, but this was too much. It could have at least made his stats higher since he was a demon. Was it telling him that he was no different than a regular rat? Pausing to look down at his body, he had to admit he didn't look like the demon rats in the game. Well, his new life was going to be cut short at this rate. Maybe if he died, he could go back home.
[The user will just die.]
His rage toward the system was distracted by the fact that the demon wolf had found him and was clawing at the hole he was hiding in. Shaking with terror, he tried to burrow himself further into the hole. He could feel the demon wolf breathing down on him. Tears streamed down his face as he frantically told the system to do something. Even if he were a demon rat, he didn't want to die yet.
[The user is in distress. Patching through to the administrator.]
As his tiny paws dug into the dirt, he squeaked, "Hurry!"
[An error has been detected in the user's stats. Recalibrating.]
"Recalibrate faster!" Caleb squeaked loudly.
[Recalibrating complete.]

His new stats weren't any better. They barely went up at all, but he supposed he should be happy that the system even bothered to modify them. It even increased his Mana stat more compared to his other stats. However, that wasn't what caught his attention. What bothered him more was the next message that had popped up after the stats.
[Quest]
[Defeat the Demon Wolf]
[You have been cornered by a demon wolf.]
[Defeat the demon wolf.]
[You will be rewarded once the demon wolf is dead.]
The system was really telling him to die, wasn't it? Even without comparing their stats, the result was very obvious. What was the point of fixing his stats if it was going to assign a quest like this? What did the system expect him to do? Bite the demon wolf to death? It would only make the demon wolf angrier, and that was only if he managed to get close enough to bite it in the first place.
[Would the user like help?]
"Yes!" Caleb squeaked.
[Initiating request.]
[The user's life is currently in jeopardy.]
[Reevaluating the current quest.]
[The current quest cannot be modified.]
[Scanning for possible solutions.]
"Hurry already!" he demanded right as he felt something catch his tail and pain shoot up through his tiny body.
Suddenly, he was pulled out of his hiding spot despite his best efforts to dig his paws into the dirt. As he laid helplessly on the ground, he realized that the demon wolf's paw had somehow caught on to his tail. Caleb pawed uselessly at the ground, trying to run away, but the demon wolf's firm grip on his tail made it impossible. All he could do was wait for death to come.
"Help!" he cried as the demon wolf temporarily let him go to snatch him up in its mouth.
[Solution found.]
[Temporarily allowing the user access to one of their past lives.]
[Past life selected.]
[The user can now use their abilities from their life as Nelson Garrett, the strongest mage in the Nazinar Empire.]
Caleb could honestly care less about what the system was talking about. All he wanted was for the system to get him out of this mess right now. He struggled in the demon wolf's mouth, which wasn't biting down on him, when it suddenly threw him up into the air. As he was coming down, he saw the demon wolf open its mouth wide open to eat him.
He waved his tiny legs as he cried, "No!"
[Searching for available magic for the user to use.]
[Warning]
[Mana stat is insufficient.]
[Will the user still proceed?]
"Yes!" Caleb said as the demon wolf's mouth shut closed around him.
[The user is currently unable to cast magic.]
[Selecting the weakest magic.]
[Fireball will be cast.]
Fire erupted from the demon wolf's mouth as it howled in agony. Caleb flew out of its mouth and rolled across the ground, covered in saliva. He took the moment to catch his breath after surviving his near death experience. That was far too close for comfort. He was lucky that he had landed directly in the center of the demon wolf's mouth.
Otherwise, he would have been a goner. However, it was too soon to celebrate, as the demon wolf was not dead yet. In fact, it was already recovering from the sudden fire that only left smoke pouring out of its mouth and was glaring in his direction. It looked seriously pissed and eager for revenge. He might not survive this time if he didn't do something quick.
"System. Cast another fireball," he commanded.
[It is ill advised.]
[The user's condition is quite poor. Casting another fireball might cause the user to lose consciousness or die.]
"I'm going to die if you don't do it. Just cast a fireball," he ordered.
[Fireball will be cast.]
Just as the demon wolf lunged at him, a fireball formed and launched itself at it. Fire and smoke engulfed his vision, leaving him unable to determine if he had killed the demon wolf or not. Suddenly, his vision blurred, and his body felt weak. He tried to keep his eyes open as his body swayed, but he was unable to keep himself from losing consciousness.
[Quest][Defeat the Demon Wolf][You have successfully defeated the demon wolf.][Quest Rewards][You have gained a level and received 1 gold.]Caleb wasn't sure what to feel as he looked at the messages hovering over him. He didn't know how long he had been out, but it must have been a couple hours at least, as night had already fallen in the time he had been unconscious. Honestly, he was lucky that nothing else had shown up while he was out cold. Then it would be really over for him."System. Explain," he said as he stood up to investigate the corpse.[What is your query?]He could feel the veins in his head pulsating as he said, "Everything. You've barely explained anything since I arrived here. Start from the very beginning."[Since the beginning of time, angels and demons have waged war...]"I don't mean that." The last thing he needed was for the system to relegate the entire prologue of the video game to him. "I mean, explain why I'm here and how to use the system."[The user w
Level 100. That wasn't too bad. Who was he kidding? He barely managed to level up once. If his encounter with the demon wolf was anything to go by, it was that it would be impossible for him to accomplish anything on his own, even with the system. He had gotten lucky with the demon wolf. Next time, he probably wouldn't be as lucky. Then he realized something. "Wait. You said permanently. Does that mean I can still go back to my world temporarily?"[Correct. The user can temporarily go back to their own world every ten levels, but it will consume resources.]That didn't sound like a good trade off. "If I don't go back every ten levels, will I be able to go home quicker?"[No.]"What if I don't want to go? Will I be able to exchange for other stuff like items or skills?" he asked.[Yes.]That was much better. Even though he wanted to go home, he didn't think it was worth having the system take him there for maybe a few days before he had to come back. He would be constantly aware of how

That had left Caleb with four stat points left to use. He knew he should save the rest for emergencies, but after everything, he didn't feel comfortable leaving the rest of his stats as they were. After raising his Stamina and Endurance stats to four, he had been left with one stat point left. He considered saving it for a brief moment, but ultimately added it to his Endurance stat in hopes that it would make him sturdier in future fights. Now all that was left was to actually eat the demon wolf's corpse. With a grimace, he went right to work.[You have eaten a portion of a demon wolf. "You're back," the thing on him said.Caleb stopped squirming as he tried to process what was going on now that it looked like he wasn't going to die, at least not right away. "System, what's going on?"[The user is currently being buried under other demon rats.]That was what it was. He had been worried there. His relief was soon replaced with anger at the system, which could have at least notified him before he freaked out. He wouldn't have run off if he had known that there was nothing for him to be worried about. Then he realized that he had understood what the other demon rat was saying."Wait. Can you understand me?" he asked in the darkness. The demon rat on top of him said, "What do you mean?"Okay, that had been a dumb question. Since they were currently of the same species, it made sense for them to be able to understand each other. He had just been overwhelmed by the idea that he could finally speak with someone. The only beings he had encountered since he arrived were the
Caleb had known it wouldn't be an easy task to start building his army of demon rats, but it really honed in when none of the demon rats were interested in hearing what he had to say. Every time he tried to speak with one, they would either ignore him, examine him, or pick a fight. The latter wasn't really an issue since he had gotten stronger, but still, he couldn't get a single demon rat to join him.Well, that wasn't entirely correct. The demon rat that had greeted him last night and led him back to the nest was sticking to his side for some reason. He didn't know why, but he really hoped it wasn't for the reason he was thinking of. Caleb couldn't even tell if they were a girl or boy demon rat. In any case, he really had no luck getting anyone's attention.[Can the system offer up a suggestion?]"Go ahead," he said with a sigh.[Why not recruit the demon rat currently with you? They appear to be open to listening to you.]The system wasn't wrong, and it wasn't like he had better op
Well, that certainly put things into perspective, but it did make sense the more Caleb thought about it. Of course, there would be a leader running the nest. It would be stranger if there wasn't one when there were so many demon rats running around, and obviously the biggest, meanest one would be the leader. That was why he refused to fight the demon rat.[Quest][Defeat the Demon Rat Leader][You wish to create an army of demon rats, but there is something standing in your way.][Defeat the demon rat leader.][You will be rewarded once the demon rat is defeated or killed.]Staring at the message for a few moments, he blurted out, "Are you kidding me?"[It isn't optional.]"Didn't you say you were on my side? The quickest and most efficient way to do so is to assert dominance by defeating the current leader.]Caleb didn't want to ad
Caleb was hesitant to let go. It could be a trick, and the larger demon rat was just waiting for him to release it. He didn't want to take the chance and continued to sink his teeth. It was only after a message stating he had completed the quest popped up that he dared to relax. Removing his teeth from the corpse, he noticed that they had gathered a crowd.A legion of demon rats were staring at him, and the sight unnerved him. He felt as if they were ready to pounce on him at any given moment. Karen also let go of the corpse and joined his side, making him feel slightly better about it, but they wouldn't be able to do much with just the two of them. Even if they were slightly stronger, the others had the advantage in numbers. For now, it seemed like they weren't going to do anything to them, so he took the opportunity to look over the message he had received for defeating the demon rat. If he was lucky, he would have leveled up, so he was getting more stat points to improve his stats.
Caleb took his words back after trying to organize his newly formed rat demon army to obey his commands. While the skills he had obtained certainly helped him quite a bit, it wasn't that simple to get them to do what he wanted. Their intelligence was simply too low. Just looking at their stats made him grimace, as they might as well be regular rats. They wouldn't make very good meat shields."Karen, you really are the only one I can count on," Caleb said as he faced his companion, who was helping deal with some rats causing trouble. As if hearing him call her, she looked back at him as her whiskers twitched. He waved his paw at her to let her know he didn't need her right away. She returned to what she was doing as he considered what he needed to do to build his rat demon army properly. Obviously, he needed to increase their intelligence enough so they could understand other commands other than attack and eat.Unfortunately, he had no way to do it. They couldn't exactly attack other de
Hello, I just wanted to inform everyone here who had been following Rise of the Demon King: Caleb Gonzales's Rat Race that I'm going to be rewriting/editing it for eBook, paperback, etc.I figured that since this work was never marked complete when it was supposd to back in January, I might as well post another author's note here.I will try to keep everyone up to date on when the first book will be released here on my currently updating stories and on F******k.If anyone's interested in beta reading for me, please contact me through F******k since I have no idea how to contact anyone on here.I'm also thinking about redoing the covers again.
Hello everyone. I just want to thank all my readers who have been following along for so long. Caleb's story has ended, which means I currently don't have any stories being written on the platform at this moment.I feel like my writing style has changed since I first started writing on Meganovel, and I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. We shall see how much more it changes.Anyway, there are several things that I want to let you know.I'm a bit sad that Rise of the Demon King: Caleb Gonzales's Rat Race didn't get as much love as my other stories, but there could be many factors that could have contributed to it. Maybe in the future I'll do a rewrite or remake of it since I still like the idea.If I do go through with this idea, then I'll just immediately go to eBook and paperback, and it would be very different from the one here. We will have to see, and I'll let everyone know.As for a new story, I'm still debating on what story I want to do. My plan is to have at least one ex
"Have you heard? They say a new demon king has appeared," someone whispered in the streets."How can that be? Wasn't the demon king killed before they could become the demon king?" another whispered."Well, the demons are acting differently compared to after the previous demon kings died," a person said.Caleb pulled down his hood even more as he passed by the gossiping crowd. He had only stepped away from the castle to catch his breath. It had been months since he had returned to this world, and he had so much work to catch up on that it wasn't even a joke. So much had happened that it felt surreal. There were still plenty of demons defying him. They still couldn't believe he was the new demon king. Caleb could understand why. He hadn't become the demon king the proper way, so it was natural that they were suspicious of his claims despite all the support he received. Even with support, there were some who simply didn't care. Bringing the demons together was a difficult job.He didn't
Caleb didn't like the sound of that. Why was the fake laughing? It was obviously at the end of its rope. There was no way it could stand a chance against all of them. Something wasn't right. As the smoke cleared, his face curled in disgust at the sight, and he wasn't the only one. He could feel Grace lean towards him as if trying to hide from the sight. The fake could barely be called alive. Its body was fraying at the seams, and the skin was peeling off. The fact that it was still standing was unreal. It was really a gruesome sight that would have made him sick if it had been the him from before he showed up in this world. He was a bit unnerved and worried about what the fake would do next."It looks like it's my loss. I had really hoped to get rid of you, but it looks like I'll just have to wait for another opportunity to arise. You got lucky," the fake said.Just as those words left the fake's deformed mouth, bats swarmed around it. None of them could see what was happening, but th
"Do you think the human will really return with our new demon king?" Lisa asked as she leaned back against the wall. "He wasn't exactly enthusiastic about it before.""Who can say?" Takisha said as she brushed her hair back. "We can only wait for the results.""It's not like he would make a good demon king anyway," Ruth said with a huff."Are you going to try to kill him if he returns?" Mildred asked."Of course not," she snapped before she muttered the next part to herself. "It's not like you'll let me.""Shouldn't you be more honest with yourself? He actually grew on you," Lisa said with a smirk.Ruth hissed. "You're one to talk. You think the same."Lisa scowled, but she didn't argue against it. She wasn't the only one feeling some attachment. Well, it wasn't exactly an attachment. Takisha and Mildred barely knew much about him. They had only known each other briefly. However, that didn't diminish their interest in him. It was the only reason why they weren't eager to kill him off
Caleb's body moved to shield her. He grunted as he felt the bullet strike his side. Fortunately, it didn't hit anything vital, but that didn't make it hurt any less. Grace was screaming his name and rushing to his side as the fake waved the gun around with a bored expression on its face. Caleb pressed a hand to the injury and felt blood coat his hand."I guess that didn't work out. Let's try again," the fake said as they raised their gun again.Suddenly, the duo found themselves falling through the air before hitting the ground hard. Caleb wheezed as he landed on his injured side. He rolled onto his back to relieve the pressure and catch his breath. Grace was quickly at his side, casting her healing magic on him again. He could feel the telltale signs of her magic working before it stopped."What? Oh, no," Grace muttered as she cast again. This time, the effect was even shorter. Caleb could still feel his injury bleeding out. For some reason, her healing magic wasn't working properly
It was silent as Caleb and the fake Grace stared at each other. The real Grace glanced between the two of them, wondering what she was supposed to do. This was beyond anything she had expected when the system assigned the quest. She had thought it was a strangely easy task at first, but she quickly realized it wasn't as simple as she first thought. At first, she couldn't go herself. When she saw the restriction, she had thought she had misread it. However, the words didn't change, no matter how much she looked at them. The system had really told her that she couldn't go personally, even though it said she had to find him and convince him to come back. Luckily, she was able to convince the four demon women to go.Grace had been worried that they wouldn't listen, but they strangely went along with her request. When she had asked why, they all gave a different response. In the end, they all wanted the same thing, which was to have him back. That was good enough for her. With their help,
Caleb grunted as they reappeared in a different location and crashed into the ground. Apparently, Grace had teleported them away from the danger. Unfortunately, she hadn't done a good job at it, which was why he was currently in pain. Ignoring the pain and getting to his feet, he took a look at their surroundings. He didn't recognize where they were.Looking back at Grace, he said, "I have so many questions that I have no idea where to begin.""You asked how I got here, well, I got a little help from the system," she said.He frowned. "The system helped you?""It assigned me a quest to find you and convince you to return," Grace said."I see," he said.Even though the system did say it would help him return home, it didn't say it wouldn't get someone
As they sat in the car, Caleb couldn't stop feeling uneasy about the whole thing. This was probably the first time he had ever gotten in the car without someone who wasn't family. It felt odd, and he didn't know what to do about the atmosphere. Caleb wanted to break the silence, but he didn't know what to talk about. He obviously couldn't bring up the other world. There were several reasons why that simply wouldn't work. One was that this fake Grace wouldn't know about it. At least he didn't think she did. She would just think he was crazy, which led to the second reason. Even if she did know about it, they weren't alone in the car. Talking about the other world in front of others was just not the smart thing to do.Caleb kept glancing at Grace out of the corner of his eye, but she didn't even look in his direction. Her eyes were focused straight ahead, with a blank expression on her fac
