Caleb snapped his head in the direction of the noise as he checked his map. The heroes were not near him, nor were there any other enemies, but this didn't calm him down. Even though there was proof staring him in the face, he couldn't stop thinking that an enemy somehow avoided the system's detection and was waiting for the chance to attack.

Running for cover, he cowered in his hole, hoping the enemy would leave him alone. After several long moments, nothing appeared. However, he kept his eyes on his surroundings and the map. Suddenly, one of the heroes broke away from the party and was slowly heading in his direction. The urge to dig a deeper hole so he wouldn't be seen rose up.

He forced himself not to act on it, as he didn't want to draw any attention to himself. The red dot grew closer and closer until it suddenly stopped. That wasn't enough to make him abandon his spot, but he was curious about the hero, who was several feet away. The trees kept them out of sight, so he couldn't

Caleb remained silent to prevent himself from giving himself away. Regular rats didn't talk. He wasn't even sure she could understand him. In the game, the demons couldn't speak unless they were one of the stronger demons, like the demon king, or at least humanoid, like a succubus. It was likely all she would hear was his squeaking. However, he wasn't going to risk it.Grace didn't appear bothered by it and said, "You shouldn't be out here by yourself. Where's your family?"He remained silent as the reminder brought back bad memories from both worlds. Memories about how his relatives treated him and what happened to his nest flashed before his eyes. She obviously didn't mean to, but that didn't stop him from pulling his paw back and stepping away from her. Grace pulled her hand back at his reaction and frowned."Mr. Rat?" After several moments, she said

Caleb would wait and observe them from afar. It was far too dangerous to get up close and personal just to stay close to Grace. While he had the [Stealth] skill, it currently only affected those that were either as strong as him or weaker. Since he had no clue how strong the heroes were, it was just too risky to follow them. Also, he would be able to judge their abilities before confronting them.Satisfied with his conclusion, he turned and headed in the opposite direction. Now that the heroes were here, he was certain he didn't have to wait a week before heading back into the town again. The townspeople would surely let their guard down, which would allow him more room to spy on them and learn more valuable information.Just as he expected, he was able to enter the town without anyone noticing his presence. The people were too busy getting excited over the fact that the heroes were there to deal with their demon problems. He didn't use his [Stealth] skill right away, as he wanted to

After listening to the people in the tavern nag and nag about the heroes, Caleb finally got fed up and sneaked his way out. There hadn't been much worthwhile to hear, but he did learn a few things outside of the people not appreciating the heroes. The heroes were going to stay for about a week to clear out the demons before moving on to the next town.Caleb just had to avoid them for a week, and then they would be out of his fur. However, it was going to be tricky. He had already almost gotten caught not too long ago. Also, he couldn't count on Grace being able to protect him from the others, given her position in the party. Getting stronger was the easiest solution, but it was also easier said than done."System, is there really no way for you to compare my stats with the heroes'?" he asked as he peeked from the alleyway.[That is i

  • Rise of the Demon King: Caleb Gonzales's Rat Race   Chapter 39: Spying on the Mayor

For a mayor of a town, Caleb had expected something more when he first looked for them. The only difference between the mayor's home and every other home in the town was that there was a one block buffer around it. Otherwise, it looked exactly like all the other homes. He had been so confused when he saw an isolated building.Caleb had initially assumed it was a place where unwanted people stayed or perhaps acted as a storage facility. It had been a shock to see an elderly man step out and for the people to greet him as mayor. He still couldn't decide if it was a good or bad thing. On the one hand, he didn't have to worry about other people coming out of their homes and instantly spotting him.On the other hand, he was also likely to be seen. It really was a contradiction. With so much open space, there weren't really places for him to hide from others. The place was really well maintained and clean. However, people rarely came by. Caleb wasn't sure of the reason, but people simply di

Caleb couldn't take his eyes away from the information in front of him. It was so unbelievable, but the evidence was right in front of him. What was on the documents had to be true. There was no reason to fake it. However, he wasn't sure what to make of this information. Could he use this to convince the heroes not to harm him?He was so consumed with the documents that he didn't notice the red dots heading towards him. It was only when he heard someone opening the door that he realized he was in trouble. Without hesitation, he threw himself over the edge of the table just before the door opened. However, he knew he couldn't dart back the way he came without being spotted, so he hid underneath the table.Watching the map, he still couldn't believe how quickly the mayor returned. He couldn't have been reading the documents for that long. Well, whatever the reason was, he kept himself hidden out of sight. Hopefully, the mayor won't take too long. It would be bad if the old man decided t

  • Rise of the Demon King: Caleb Gonzales's Rat Race   Chapter 41: Gathering Demons

Now that he had time to think things over, Caleb was able to cobble together a plan that he was sure would be foolproof. First, he would need to talk with the heroes and let them know the truth. Once they did, they would surely stop hunting the demons. When that happened, he was going to have them help him gather up the demons to attack the town. It was perfect.Who was he kidding? There was no way it would work. So many things could go wrong that it wasn't even funny. While the information he found was groundbreaking, there wasn't anyone he could exactly tell it to. The demons likely wouldn't care, and no human was going to stop and listen to him. They were more likely to believe he was lying to them in an attempt to trick them."Is there really no way I can use this information?" Caleb muttered to himself.[Unfortunately, the system can't help with this matter. It is something that the user must resolve on their own.]"Are you sure? Can you really not help?" he asked as he held up h

Caleb wasn't sure what he was expecting when he finally tracked down where the green dots were. He certainly didn't expect a little nest of demon rats huddling beneath the leaves. How did he know they were demon rats? He honestly wasn't sure, but he couldn't think of another demon species that would look like that. It obviously couldn't be a regular animal, as they didn't appear on the map.A lot of questions ran through his mind as he stared at the little puff balls. However, the first thing that came to mind was why they were so cute. When he looked at other demon rats, he never thought they were cute. He might consider them furry and soft looking depending on which one he looked at, but otherwise he didn't think they were cute. The ones right in front of him were the exception. It was like someone purposely tried to make them as adorable as possible, as if to deter anyone from harming them. Even someone like him, who didn't care much about cute things, fell for their charm. Caleb never signed up for this. When he first arrived in this world, he never thought he would end up becoming the babysitter to about a dozen baby demon rats. He could barely take his eyes off of them before one of them got into trouble. It seriously made him question how they could have survived on their own without supervision. He wanted to accuse the system of being involved somehow, but it claimed it was incapable of caring for baby demon rats or bringing them out of nowhere. If anything, it suggested that maybe one or some of the members of his army survived long enough to smuggle them out. Of course, they were both skeptical about the idea. They both knew a demon rat's nature. The chances that a demon rat would run away from a bunch of humans to save the babies were unlikely. It had to be before the attack, but why would they do that? After observing them for a couple of days, Cal

    Author's Note

Hello everyone. I just want to thank all my readers who have been following along for so long. Caleb's story has ended, which means I currently don't have any stories being written on the platform at this moment.I feel like my writing style has changed since I first started writing on Meganovel, and I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. We shall see how much more it changes.Anyway, there are several things that I want to let you know.I'm a bit sad that Rise of the Demon King: Caleb Gonzales's Rat Race didn't get as much love as my other stories, but there could be many factors that could have contributed to it. Maybe in the future I'll do a rewrite or remake of it since I still like the idea.If I do go through with this idea, then I'll just immediately go to eBook and paperback, and it would be very different from the one here. We will have to see, and I'll let everyone know.As for a new story, I'm still debating on what story I want to do. My plan is to have at least one ex

    Chapter 190: A New Beginning

"Have you heard? They say a new demon king has appeared," someone whispered in the streets."How can that be? Wasn't the demon king killed before they could become the demon king?" another whispered."Well, the demons are acting differently compared to after the previous demon kings died," a person said.Caleb pulled down his hood even more as he passed by the gossiping crowd. He had only stepped away from the castle to catch his breath. It had been months since he had returned to this world, and he had so much work to catch up on that it wasn't even a joke. So much had happened that it felt surreal. There were still plenty of demons defying him. They still couldn't believe he was the new demon king. Caleb could understand why. He hadn't become the demon king the proper way, so it was natural that they were suspicious of his claims despite all the support he received. Even with support, there were some who simply didn't care. Bringing the demons together was a difficult job.He didn't

    Chapter 189: Resolving Matters

Caleb didn't like the sound of that. Why was the fake laughing? It was obviously at the end of its rope. There was no way it could stand a chance against all of them. Something wasn't right. As the smoke cleared, his face curled in disgust at the sight, and he wasn't the only one. He could feel Grace lean towards him as if trying to hide from the sight. The fake could barely be called alive. Its body was fraying at the seams, and the skin was peeling off. The fact that it was still standing was unreal. It was really a gruesome sight that would have made him sick if it had been the him from before he showed up in this world. He was a bit unnerved and worried about what the fake would do next."It looks like it's my loss. I had really hoped to get rid of you, but it looks like I'll just have to wait for another opportunity to arise. You got lucky," the fake said.Just as those words left the fake's deformed mouth, bats swarmed around it. None of them could see what was happening, but th

    Chapter 188: Return

"Do you think the human will really return with our new demon king?" Lisa asked as she leaned back against the wall. "He wasn't exactly enthusiastic about it before.""Who can say?" Takisha said as she brushed her hair back. "We can only wait for the results.""It's not like he would make a good demon king anyway," Ruth said with a huff."Are you going to try to kill him if he returns?" Mildred asked."Of course not," she snapped before she muttered the next part to herself. "It's not like you'll let me.""Shouldn't you be more honest with yourself? He actually grew on you," Lisa said with a smirk.Ruth hissed. "You're one to talk. You think the same."Lisa scowled, but she didn't argue against it. She wasn't the only one feeling some attachment. Well, it wasn't exactly an attachment. Takisha and Mildred barely knew much about him. They had only known each other briefly. However, that didn't diminish their interest in him. It was the only reason why they weren't eager to kill him off

    Chapter 187: Escape

Caleb's body moved to shield her. He grunted as he felt the bullet strike his side. Fortunately, it didn't hit anything vital, but that didn't make it hurt any less. Grace was screaming his name and rushing to his side as the fake waved the gun around with a bored expression on its face. Caleb pressed a hand to the injury and felt blood coat his hand."I guess that didn't work out. Let's try again," the fake said as they raised their gun again.Suddenly, the duo found themselves falling through the air before hitting the ground hard. Caleb wheezed as he landed on his injured side. He rolled onto his back to relieve the pressure and catch his breath. Grace was quickly at his side, casting her healing magic on him again. He could feel the telltale signs of her magic working before it stopped."What? Oh, no," Grace muttered as she cast again. This time, the effect was even shorter. Caleb could still feel his injury bleeding out. For some reason, her healing magic wasn't working properly

    Chapter 186: Brawl

It was silent as Caleb and the fake Grace stared at each other. The real Grace glanced between the two of them, wondering what she was supposed to do. This was beyond anything she had expected when the system assigned the quest. She had thought it was a strangely easy task at first, but she quickly realized it wasn't as simple as she first thought. At first, she couldn't go herself. When she saw the restriction, she had thought she had misread it. However, the words didn't change, no matter how much she looked at them. The system had really told her that she couldn't go personally, even though it said she had to find him and convince him to come back. Luckily, she was able to convince the four demon women to go.Grace had been worried that they wouldn't listen, but they strangely went along with her request. When she had asked why, they all gave a different response. In the end, they all wanted the same thing, which was to have him back. That was good enough for her. With their help,

    Chapter 185: Catching Up

Caleb grunted as they reappeared in a different location and crashed into the ground. Apparently, Grace had teleported them away from the danger. Unfortunately, she hadn't done a good job at it, which was why he was currently in pain. Ignoring the pain and getting to his feet, he took a look at their surroundings. He didn't recognize where they were.Looking back at Grace, he said, "I have so many questions that I have no idea where to begin.""You asked how I got here, well, I got a little help from the system," she said.He frowned. "The system helped you?""It assigned me a quest to find you and convince you to return," Grace said."I see," he said.Even though the system did say it would help him return home, it didn't say it wouldn't get someone

    Chapter 184: Trap

As they sat in the car, Caleb couldn't stop feeling uneasy about the whole thing. This was probably the first time he had ever gotten in the car without someone who wasn't family. It felt odd, and he didn't know what to do about the atmosphere. Caleb wanted to break the silence, but he didn't know what to talk about. He obviously couldn't bring up the other world. There were several reasons why that simply wouldn't work. One was that this fake Grace wouldn't know about it. At least he didn't think she did. She would just think he was crazy, which led to the second reason. Even if she did know about it, they weren't alone in the car. Talking about the other world in front of others was just not the smart thing to do.Caleb kept glancing at Grace out of the corner of his eye, but she didn't even look in his direction. Her eyes were focused straight ahead, with a blank expression on her fac
