Markus trudged up the familiar path to his home, his steps heavy with weariness. He had hoped that the alliance with the werewolves would be a turning point in the war, but instead it had only brought more grief and uncertainty. And now he had to face the people he loved most, and tell them that the situation was even more dire than before.

As he approached the door, his heart sank. It felt like an age since he had seen his mother, and he could only imagine how worried she must be. But he knew he had to be honest with her, no matter how hard it would be.

"It's good to see you, my son," Nora said, her voice warm but tinged with sadness. "I can't help but worry about you, always off on these dangerous quests. It's hard to sit here and wait, not knowing if you're safe."

"I'm sorry to put you through that, Mother," Markus said, his voice heavy with guilt. "I know it must be difficult for you, but I'm doing what I have to do. I promise I'll always come back to you, no matter what."
