Chapter 8

The king was silent, and Markus could see the wheels turning in his mind.

"If what you say is true," said the king, his words slow and measured, "then I would be a fool to keep her. But how do I know that you speak the truth? How do I know that you are not simply trying to manipulate me?"

Markus took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the king's. "Because I have nothing to gain from this," he said. "I gain nothing from freeing Celeste, except for her safety.

As Markus watched the slaves disappear into the distance, a weight lifted from his shoulders. But then, he saw the king's expression change, and a chill ran down his spine. "I have changed my mind," said the king, his voice cold and commanding. "Bring the slaves back to me, now."

Markus's heart sank. He knew he couldn't fight the king's forces, and he couldn't let the slaves be returned to captivity. He had to think of something, and fast.
