Darkness closed in on Ethan like a shroud, thick and suffocating. His heart pounded in his chest as he watched Lysara's figure stand before him, the power emanating from her like an unholy storm. The woman he loved was no more. There was something in her eyes something cold, distancing that hit him in the chest like a blow.

"No…" Ethan's voice cracked as he reached out to her, desperation clawing at his throat. "Lysara, don't you see? This isn't you. This isn't who you are!"

Her lips twisted into a cold smile, one that didn't belong to her, and for a split second, he felt a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she was still there, the woman who'd held him, kissed him, and laughed with him. But the hope was brief.
