Thin rays of the Moonlight streaked into the tiny cell ,showing a visible part of the aged cracked face infront of Alex.
The face looked ancient under the light of the moon, even though the cell was dark,Alex could still make out the image of the rest of the body.He slowly walked to the corner of the cell, opposite the man.The floor was moist from the lack of fresh air and sunlight, Alex held in a sigh of relief as he sat down on the floor. He could make out the man's face, turning to stare at him.The man looked at him with a crooked expression."I've not had a cellmate in two years." The man croaked, his voice was hoarse and weak."Why are you here?" The man continued.Alex was too stunned to speak, the man's voice didn't fit the face.He looked like he was around seventy years old but he sounded younger and like someone that had once lived sophisticatedly." Marshall." The man continued.Alex knew marshall, he was one of the nicest wardens if not the nicest."He usually has a little chat with me everyday, especially whenever he comes to drop a meal."He told me about you and your involvement with the Connery family." The old man grunted."I can't believe those psychos are still walking the face of the Earth!" He continued, he looked hurt and angry."what do you mean?" Alex asked innocently, he hadn't for once thought of the Connery family's hand in this.all he had been thinking about was Sarah. The old man looked at him dumfoundedly."I'm Laury, Laury Jackman." The man croaked, Alex could hear the hatred in his voice, he wondered what the Connery family had done to him." I'm Ale…." "I know that." The man cut him off."countless of Innocent lives have been wasted! all because of their unaccounted misuse of power!" The man continued."Families have been seperated! companies have been burned to the ground! lives have been ruined! by those greedy bloodsuckers and yet they walk freely!" The man vibrated angrily.Alex quickly stood up, reaching out to pat the man."Don't!" the man bellowed, casting Alex's hand aside angrily."you won't understand what it feels like.""you won't understand what it feels like watching your own daughter grow up while you're rotting inside a cell."you won't understand what it feels like! how it feels to see your own daughter growing up without a family! growing up without a father in her life!""you won't understand the pain of losing your family and everything you worked for!""The pain of watching your own son, go cold in your own arms.""The pain of everybody seeing you as a mad psychopath!""The pain of living the last years of your life in an underground cell in the worst prison in the state!""I haven't seen the light of day for fifteen years!""I haven't seen my daughter for fifteen years!""whenever she comes to visit me…Marshall always helps to pass messages along!"Alex was stunned as he watched the man's body shake with obvious anger and resentment, he could feel the hate seething from the man."How did you end up here? what happened?" Alex asked, the cell became quiet as the man edged his shoulders, he looked defeated, Alex wasn't expecting any reply from the man."L.J." The man said silently"You must have heard of L.J company? they were once a subsidiary of Concorp, the Connery Family company.""I was once In charge of L.J" The man continued, detectable sadness in his voice."I was neutral on working with Concorp, all I cared about was providing for my family and watching my children grow, I didn't care about what the company did.""Till I found out what Concorp was using the softwares we produced for them to do.""They were weaponizing the softwares and selling it to government militaries and terrorists.""I didn't like the idea and I approached the Connery family about their actions." He stopped as he started another racket of dry cough.Alex looked at the man again, you could tell he had been through alot."We had a big fallout and the fight lasted for months. I didn't want anything to do with Concorp again but L.J was still a weak company.""So I decided to chase power, but I chased it the wrong way.""After years of working with Concorp, we finally had enough power to move out on our own, so we went forward with it, Concorp wasn't pleased about the fact that we were leaving, Concorp was the face of the company and L.J was the brains and the body, they didn't want us to go because we were going to take a lot of their best workers with us.""The Connery family promised us heaven and Earth but I didn't want anything to do with such heartless people.""We finally left and we started L.J.""Concorp couldn't get over the loss and the company's stock started to plummet.""Concorp was weakened but the Connery family wasn't.""It all took a brutal turn after L.J got a chance to have a legal contract to build nuclear weapons controlled by softwares. The idea of the weapons was to be used as a defense weapon against nations who tried to attack our country.""Concorp were on the contract too, they wanted the contract but we were a good opponent, we fought hard and legally.""Not until My son was kidnapped.""The Connery Family took the fight into something else.""My wife and son were killed.""I watched them die with my own eyes, I watched them tear down L.J""And when the government got in on the fight, I was sent to jail.""All the illegal weaponized software that Concorp had been producing had my company's name on it, so I took the fall.""I lost everything, my family, company, name, everything!""Here I am now.""The only thing keeping me alive is my daughter.""She's survived every single thing the Connery family and Concorp threw at her.""She's building L.J from scratch.""She's building it with blood, sweat, and tears.""I know I failed her, I didn't set a good example for her, but I feel proud to know that I gave birth to a tiger, a fighter.""Thinking of her keeps me awake every night.""It keeps me alive." a crooked smile spread across his lips, igniting some kind of fire in his eyes."Waiting for the day that she'll bring The Connery family to their knees, the day that she'll bring Concorp down and right all the wrongs." He coughed again as his eyes shone, it was full of hope, undying hope. The man looked over at Alex."Only hope and drive can get you out of here alive," he continued. The man rolled over to sleep and after some minutes Alex could hear him snore silently.Alex reflected on his own life.He remembered Sarah, he wondered if she still thought of him.He knew he couldn't spend his life behind bars.He had to get out, he had to do something he hadn't been doing all his life. he had to live.He shut his eyes, drifting off to sleep, not bothered by the biting cold or the insects that crawled all over his body. The loud clanging of the gates made him sit up immediately, he had a swift dream, he could barely remember the details, it was something about a cliff, he could remember seeing sarah.oh yes! he could remember seeing sarah hanging off a cliff, he had attempted to save her and she had taken him down with her instead. The loud clanging on the prison cell made him open his eyes again, he looked at the opposite cell of the room, the old man sat there, bent over like he was a scribbling something on a piece of paper.Marshall stood at the gate, looking at them suspiciously."suspension time is up! we're returning you back to your cell.""hope you learn to be on your best behaviors boy!" Marshall grunted loudly as he watched Alex drag himself off the ground. The old man stood up and walked over to the gate, he whispered in Marshall's ears and handed the paper to him.Alex walked to the gate as he watched the old man scruffle back to his corner."Take care of yourself chap, good luck." The
Alex looked at the darkened roof as it vibrated dangerously, debris pouring into his eyes, the building was falling apart. The smoke was too thick and it stung his eyes. He looked at the old man again, the flames were not near him yet, it would take a while for it to get near him, meaning he still had time to get a wet blanket or something to beat the flames and smoke with.Alex turned around, he had to run back through where he came from in search of a wet blanket, time wasn't on his side.He heard a loud rumble, a louder one following the first. The ceiling was collapsing already! He was halfway down the hall already, Alex rushed down the hallway back to the old man, the ground behind him giving way as the ceiling collapsed chasing him and he ran.He grabbed the old man's arm and pulled him into what appeared to be a hallway closet“Al—?” he couldn’t get another word out, as Alex's big hand clamped over his mouth. His muscular arms held him tight and the look in his eyes told him h
In his life,Alex had done many crazy things but this was the craziest. The air was cold against his face as he leaped into the air, the building crumbling and going up in flames behind him. The hard ground came rushing at him. Unable to stop the momentum, he lifted his leg to take the brunt of the impact.A roar erupted from his chest as his whole body connected with the solid hard ground, pain splintered through his body, especially his leg. He had angled his body so his legs could take the fall and held his hands tight around his head as he crashed to the floor.Everything went dark.*****With every ounce of strength she had left Joanne tried to hold herself together, Marshall had called her late last night telling her about the fire at the prison, she had rushed here, driving all through the night and here she was, in Marshall's cramped up apartment, Marshall was lucky, he wasn't on shift last night but immediately he heard of the fire he had rushed straight to the prison. He had
He had taken some of the drugs he found on the cabinet and he felt better. He watched her eyes blink several times. She didn't look worried but he knew he still had to put her at ease.“No one knows what happened to me. It’s all over the news that a lot of us were killed in that explosion." Alex said as he motioned towards the black couch. " Yeah, you guys don't have much time.I'll call them to set the record straight,” Marshall chipped in.Alex glanced over at him, he looked like he was prepared for whatever storm was coming“What—what would happen if they get hold of you? or if they know I'm with you?” She twisted her hands in her lap, starting to look very nervous.Alex shook his head firmly and she relaxed a little in her seat. “We shouldn't be worrying about that, we should be preparing to leave here before twelve.once it's twelve, every of the city's exits would be shut."“What did the police say?” She leaned closer to his chair as she asked Marshall, who stood across the room
Joanne walked into the dark room and felt around for a light switch. When the room flooded with light, she gasped. It was full of tall shelves stocked with everything from flashlights to rubber hoses. She almost tripped over her backpack as she started walking the aisles. Why would Marshall have all this stuff? Who was he? How did Alex know him?Taking the bag, she started walking the aisles, grabbing a flashlight, grabbing a handful of batteries, a box of matches, and other basic items. When she reached the back, her bag was heavy with stuff she thought she’d need. She’d spent four years in the Brownies growing up and knew what it took to go camping. She spotted a small silver box on the top shelf and took it down. Inside was a silver .45. She reached in and felt its weight, knowing she had to make room in her bag. She grabbed a box of bullets and before placing the gun in the small side pocket of the bag, she made sure it was unloaded. Her father had forced her to take gun classes a
Alex walked at a steady pace as he watched the back of Joanne’s dark head. She defiantly fit in to the crowd. a few heads turned when she walked down the street and men had seemed to fall aside with their tongues wagging. At least that’s what he imagined. She had that effect on men, kind of like the coyote in the cartoons when steam shot out of its ears, and its eyes did the slot machine spin.Okay, so it wasn’t that bad. If he wanted to be totally honest, that’s the way he’d felt when he’d first seen her. She’d walked across the room in a hot red outfit even though she looked sad, he’d lost control of his wits. Not only had his temperature risen, well … he shook his head and cleared the image from his mind. They’d been walking for almost an hour and already he could tell she was slowing down. So far they hadn’t run into any trouble. When Joanne stumbled, he reached out and took her arm. She yanked it free and glared at him. He smiled at her in return, which only caused her to frown.
Joanne was going to kill him. They were on hour five of their ‘small trek’, as he’d called it, and not only were her feet killing her, she was sure she’d sweat more fluids than she had taken in, or weighed, for that matter. He’d never told her they were going to be hiking through the jungle at top speeds. If he had, she would have told him where to go and how to get there.“Arg… Alex.” She corrected herself. “I have to stop.”“Shhh!” He’d been acting strange for the last half a mile. She had a few rocks in her boots and needed a moment to use the nearest tree. Her shirt was sticking to her skin, and she wanted nothing more than to remove it and toss it aside. But the bugs were so bad under the canopy of the trees, she didn’t want any new bites on exposed skin. Looking at the back of his head, she realized he wasn’t fighting any bugs off.“Alex, I need to stop.” She thought this name suited him better than Argon. He turned and looked at her, his eyes burrowing into hers. She tried very
Alex watched Joanne across the small space as she slept. He’d sat across from her last night at Marshall’s and watched her, much like he was doing now. She slept like he’d dreamed of doing for years, like the whole world had dropped off and she had no cares. He knew the hike had been hard on her. Hell, it had been hard on him, but he was used to being uncomfortable and tired. He’d done it all his adult life and had no plans of letting up any time soon. He liked helping people out and working with his buddies from his time in the Connery corps. He was very glad that he and Marshall had patched up their relationship. He’d been his best friend for the last year. Alex had hated knowing the man was not around to call when he got in a tight spot. But above everything else about his current life, Alex liked the danger and the thrills he got when he outmaneuvered his opponents. It was like a game to him. He’d always been good at it. When he was a kid, he’d played paintball wars with all his f
