Over an hour after being wheeled into the emergency room on a fucking gurney, Alex was done with people poking and prodding at him. The wounds in his upper arm and calf hurt the worst, but the doc had already confirmed there were no bullets in him, just bits of concrete and splinters of metal. Two nurses were currently pulling some of them out of his back with tweezers while the doc sewed up the hole in his arm in preparation for a precautionary round of x-rays.

Biting back a snarl when one of the nurses dug deep into the middle of his back to extract a splinter of shrapnel, he gritted his teeth and fought for patience. Joanne was safe; she was being looked over somewhere in this same ER, he just couldn’t go to her. And he needed to. Wanted to see for himself that she was truly okay.

The doctor, a young Cuban woman, tied off the last stitch and set down her needle driver on the metal tray beside his bed. “I stopped all the bleeding so that should do for now. Once we verify via x-ray t

Alex reached down to take Joanne’s hand, aware of the color in her cheeks and that he’d just said the L word to Marshall instead of her. Hell. There was plenty he wanted to say to her, just not in front of anyone. He held her hand as they walked out of the hospital and into the hot afternoon sunshine. The moment they exited the building, Alex spotted Sean and Duke leaning against their parked SUV at the entrance. They headed straight over, their posture and expressions telling him something else was going on.“What’s up?” he asked them, bracing for more bad news. He felt Joanne’s hand tense in his, squeezed gently in reassurance.Sean shot a look at Duke before turning his attention back to Alex. “Think we’ve got something.”Oh, hell yes. Not wanting her to overhear in case it made her more upset, he released Joanne’s hand and limped over to them, Marshall right beside him. “What?”“Had someone in Hernandez’s off

“Joanne.” A hand waved in front of her face. “Hello?”She looked away from the Emirates 767 parked at the gate waiting to take them to London and turned to blink up at Pam. “Sorry?”She didn’t comment on her spacing out, just gestured across the gate lounge toward the snack shops where a few vendors were open to cater to the tourists who weren’t observing the Ramadan fasting. “I asked if you want something to eat before they start boarding us.”“No thanks.” Ick, the last thing she felt like doing right now was eating. She glanced at her watch. They were due to board in another few minutes. Pam as well, since she was coming with her and Michelle all the way back to Chicago. she’d told her she meant to see her home safely, and she wasn’t going to argue because the truth was she felt better with her there. God knew she needed the mental support Pam’s protection gave her.She covered another dry cough with one hand, wince

Eleven days laterThe last smudge of purple was fading on the horizon where the sky tumbled into the inky black ocean. A thin swath of light sliced over the dark surface from the crescent moon in the west. Stars winked to life overhead, a million sparkling diamonds appearing through the haze of high clouds. Another beautiful, peaceful night on St. Simons.Alex stood on the back deck watching the waves roll in, forearms braced on the wood railing he and Sarah had installed, ignoring the twinge in his healing triceps. His stitches were out and only some muscle soreness remained in his upper arm and calf. He took a sip of beer, set the bottle on the railing and let the breeze wash over him, pulling in a deep breath of salt-tinged air. Damn it felt good to be home. But there was an even more important reason for his relaxed mood.Behind him the sliding glass door that led out to the deck opened and shut quietly. The sweet scent of vani

2 weeks later Rushing to a last minute meeting early on a Monday morning didn’t exactly bode well for the rest of her week. Walking as fast as she could in her four inch heels, Claire was halfway from her car to the front door of the imposing black Fort Meade CIA headquarters building when her cell rang. It wasn’t even seven a.m., so whoever was calling probably didn’t have good news. With a mental curse she slowed enough to dig through her purse then continued hurrying to the entrance as she checked the screen. She bit back a groan when she saw her father’s number on display and answered anyway. “Hi, Dad. I’m just on my way into an important meeting and I’m in a rush, so I can’t talk right now.” Her boss’s call had woken her from a dead sleep at five thirty and she had less than ten minutes to get up to his office for the impromptu seven o’clock meeting. Whatever it was about, it had to be big. The nervous flutter in her belly intensified.

The door opened. A dark-haired man probably in his mid thirties stood there dressed in a navy blue dress suit. He nodded at Luke as he entered. “Morning.”“Morning. Evers, this is Claire Oliver. Claire, Jake Evers, FBI.”Claire half rose to shake the hand he offered. “Hi.”“Hello.” Evers released her hand and glanced at Luke. “You tell her?”“Just did. She’s doing fine.”She didn’t feel fine, Claire thought as she sank back into her chair and Evers moved past her to another. Her hands were clammy and her insides were in knots.Luke turned his head and smiled at someone else in the doorway. “Hey.”Claire looked over in time to see a familiar face appear. Pam Webster, part owner and head of L.J Corp  Security. Delighted, she smiled too and started to rise then spotted a second man behind her. For a second her heart stuttered but then he came into the light and she recognized Alexaner Kane

Stepping out of his apartment building into the late September sunshine, Paulo walked down to his favorite neighborhood coffee shop on the corner. The sunlight felt good on his face as it filtered through the scarlet and gold leaves of the trees he passed, transforming them into blazing pieces of jewel-toned stained glass. Though it was warm out now, the temperature overnight had been chilly and a lingering dampness hung in the air.The heady scent of freshly roasted coffee beans hit him when he opened the door to the shop and held it for a woman carrying a to-go cup in one hand and leading a toddler with the other. She smiled her thanks and he carried on to wait in line.At the counter, the barista smiled at him. “Morning, Paulo. Usual today?”“Two of them, please. To go.”“You bet.” She took his money and he walked around to wait by the side counter for his drinks. He filled the first one with a good amount of cream and laced

The cheap and slightly rundown apartment building where Robby lived was surrounded by blocks of others just like it. The wooden exterior’s paint was peeling and nothing had been remodelled since it was built in the 60s. Since he lived on government assistance and wouldn’t take any money from her or their father, this was all he could afford.Claire parked at the curb out front and climbed out as Marshall pulled up behind her. She offered him a wave of thanks and he raised his hand in acknowledgement. Then to her surprise, he cut the engine. She stopped on the sidewalk to look back at him. Was he seriously going to sit there while she checked on her brother and then follow her home afterward? She sighed and headed for the frosted glass door at the apartment’s entry. Yeah it felt nice to know he still cared, but she refused to let that sway her. It wasn’t fair to either of them. She couldn’t live the kind of life he wanted.Facing the prospect

At seven thirty the next morning Marshall pushed open the door of the team’s new office space the CIA had put them in. Alex was already there, along with the two other L.J Corp  employees they’d worked with over in Cuba, all seated around a large rectangular table strewn with laptops and papers.Blake Sean looked up to nod at him, a former Marine Scout/Sniper with medium-toned brown skin and hazel eyes. Beside him sat Bob Duke, ex Force Recon NCO and resident computer genius. Aside from Claire, Duke was the best Marshall had seen with IT stuff. His collar-length black hair was already mussed from him shoving his fingers through it. Staring at the laptop screen in front of him, he muttered a quiet curse and typed something with a series of quick keystrokes.Marshall strode over to take a look at the screen. “Hit a snag already?”Duke typed something else in and responded without looking up. “Whoever the Connery and Cuban terrorists have as an

Evelyn came awake slowly. Painfully. A sharp ache pulsed inside her head and made her wince as she tried to open her eyes. What? She was facedown over an animal, no saddle. The animal’s spine dug into her hips and stomach. Her hands were bound. The lack of blood flow and frigid temps meant they were like ice blocks on the ends of her arms. Dammit, what if she had frostbite and was too far gone to even know it? She wriggled her fingers, and the returning blood made her gasp. She kept moving, tried to wriggle her legs but they were also bound. The struggle shifted her center of gravity until she was in danger of toppling upside-down beneath the animal and being trampled. Hell. Who’d done this to her? What did they want? The smell of musty fur was overpowering, making her throat heave as her stomach rebelled.“I’m going to be sick.” The contents of her stomach splashed against the gray talus that the horse was working hard to cross. They’d followed the spoor for two hours but ground sign was disappearing as dust swirled in the wind. Duke was torn. Did he keep following the unknown originator of these tracks or go back to base camp and regroup. Base camp was calling his name but he wasn’t sure whether that was because Evelyn had destroyed his objectivity or because it was the smartest thing to do.Hell, right now he was going in circles.“Let’s mark this GPS position and head back,” he said to Sri luc quietly. The sound of horses hooves drumming against solid earth made him glance in the direction of the biologists’ camp. The student—Ivan—came flying into view, coat open and flapping in time to the rhythm of the horse.“What the feck?” They’d all rendezvoused at the snare where the tracks had been spotted, but he’d sent Ivan and the local man back to camp on horseback an hour ago. He hadn’t liked the idea of Evelyn being alone, although she’d managed without hi

He split them into three groups.“Can’t I go with the doc?” Lucas moaned. He might have the reputation of being the ladies’ man of the Mountain Troop, but after what Duke had been thinking five minutes earlier while trying not to kiss Evelyn Cox’s lips, legs, and everything in between, maybe he was a frickin’ ladies’ man too.He wanted her and he’d let his eyes tell her exactly how much he wanted her. What was he thinking? There was a time and a place for that sort of thing and this wasn’t it.“No.” He kept his voice light. None of them were here to get laid. “You’re with Sri luc. Jordan you go with the Great Dane. I’m with the doc.” He gave them a firm smile that told them this wasn’t up for debate. “We’ll get the biologists to give us a demo how to tranq and release the Polar bears before we head out. I want hourly radio checks.” He nodded to the men. “It might be a couple of days until the other guys get here. I’m

When she woke she was staring straight into the startling cobalt eyes of Officer Robert Duke. He looked like he’d wait all day for her to wake up.“I must be dreaming,” she croaked. He held out a mug of black tea.“Definitely dreaming.” She sat up, took it, and sipped. The warm liquid eased her dry throat. “Thanks. What time is it?”“0600.” His voice rolled over her. She blinked groggily. There was enough of a burr in his accent to make his voice very sexy and she figured he was laying on the charm this morning. His face was scrubbed and clean-shaven. She found herself studying his features. The vivid eyes shaded by thick brows, the cheeks scraped smooth, the jaw firm and obstinate, his nose too flat to be conventionally handsome. Yet the combination stirred up her insides like hot coals. She fought the urge run her fingers through his short blond hair. He was tall and lean and he looked really, really g

Evelyn shoved back the yurt flap. Mikado flung up his hands in surprise and gave a nervous laugh. “You’re back. You scared me.”“There’s a lot of that going around.”He smiled at her, brown eyes twinkling. “Ivan was worried when the horse came back without you, but I told him you be okay.”Mikado had more faith in her than she did. He returned to whatever he was doing with the cubs. She strode to the computer and opened her email and read the message. Christ, the Trust really had forbidden her to release the animals. She inhaled deeply and tried to calm the rage that continued to burn inside. They thought she was overreacting and had no proof, and in the next sentence they told her it was too dangerous for her and Ivan to go after a guy with a gun. Ivan came slowly into the tent. She didn’t know if he was scared or angry. He had a right to be both.“Did you reply to this email?” She was vibrating with em

He ended up accused of being exactly the same sort of nutcase by someone he was trying to help. It stung. He wasn’t about to let her know that.“That’s right, love. That’s why they pay me the big bucks, so let’s move it.” He maneuvered her in front of him. “Step where the trooper steps if you want to keep your legs.” He let her walk a few paces ahead and spoke into his comms. “Jordan and Lucas, keep a low profile as we head back to the RV. The midday sun beat harshly on this patch of barren rock, melting the inch of snow that had fallen during the morning. The woman beside him had finally stopped wriggling and fallen asleep a couple of hours ago. His team was in position and they’d been on stag duty while he caught a quick nap. Now he was wide awake and refreshed, but so far, nothing yet. What had made Vladimir jores turn his back on his former homeland? What made him defect to fight on the side of people who got their kicks out of brutalizing innocent civilians?Duke understood terrorists better than anyone this side of a suicide vest. He’d grown up with them, would probably have become one himself if not for the tragic death of his sister. That was the family business, right alongside farming. Being immersed in that indoctrinated shit from a young age meant he understood how people born into it found it hard to break free. It was so ingrained, so fecking normal. Talk about brainwashing. H

How many years had it been since she’d held hands with a guy? A soldier? A shiver brushed over her skin like a ghost from the past.It felt strange. As if she’d been transported back in time. And yet, here she was, relying on the strength of those long, strong, foreign fingers to guide her safely through the night. Adjusting her footing in response to subtle pressure changes, tuning her body to match his. Trusting a man she’d just met. Relying on a man, period. It wasn’t something she did.It wasn’t who she was.She believed in saving things, in using data to make her point, not violence. But data wasn’t going to save her Polar bears from their current predicament. Her fingers tightened involuntarily and he slowed to match her pace. As Evelyn lay down, her mind kept wavering back to years ago when she was still a child. When her  grandfather was still the minister of ammunition, their family had been good friends with the Connery family so they always stood by each other. Her grandfather had hated L.j corporation because they and Connery corporation were rivals. They each made weapons for governments and L.j corporation were beginning to outsell Connery corporation. She remembered the old Mr Connery coming to visit her grandfather and the two of them talking in hushtones about the issues.During that period, a heated rivalry had begun and it all came to its peak one cold night, years ago.she remembered it clearly. Her mind went back through the years, reliving the moment.“Come away from there, Evelyn.
