"Mom, look… that man is walking without shoes on!"
"Shh, it's rude to point. We don't know what he's going through, sweetie."In the somewhat small and busy streets of Fergo, Vayne had been walking around for a couple of hours, 3 hours to be exact. And he did nothing but just that. Limping, as he was still not used to walking normally. And as expected, he had been garnering the stares of all the people there. Some of them, even closing down their stalls as Vayne was obviously a crazy person.Fergo was a very small town— everyone knew each other and if there was a person they didn't, then it could only mean one of two things. The stranger was an Explorer from the outside, or someone being escorted by an Explorer. And seeing how young and thin the boy looked, he was surely the latter. And they would usually welcome them with open arms, as new visitors mean new money. But with the way Vayne looked, well— he looked bad for business.Vayne, however, didn't mind the stares. He didn't even notice them. He was just busy feeling the dried earth beneath his feet. It was weird, he had been walking for hours and yet not a single sweat trailed down his face. He used to be so tired with just a few steps with his crutches, but now there was no sign of fatigue. And so, he just continued to walk. And throughout this walk, he had thought up a few theories as to what could have happened to him.The Vase. The Artifact that they thought was originally a dud… maybe it worked after all? That was really the only reasonable conclusion he could come up with. And this Blessing, it healed his wound. He had been trying to see how to activate it, but he didn't even have any idea on where to start. He was sure that the exploding mug and the broken cabinet were his Blessing activating. But alas, he hasn't been able to replicate it since. There was also the mystery of how he got to Fergo, which is probably the thing that didn't make sense the most. He asked Sheera for the date before he got kicked out… and assuming he spent 2 and a half days bedridden, that would mean… it only took less than half a day for him to get to Fergo from where he was buried, which should be only 2 hours away from the border.Could it be that his Blessing had something to do with spe—"..." And before he could finish his thoughts, he heard a thunder coming from his stomach."...I've only had tea," Vayne muttered as he finally stopped walking and also finally taking in the sights of the small village. Most of Fergo was made in clay; if he was right, then it should be because it was the closest source they have in the area. Everything was made from it, everything except their walls.Vayne then looked at the towering fence that surrounded the entirety of Fergo. It wasn't as tall as the border, but still colossal enough compared to everything else within the vicinity."..." And soon, Vayne's eyes found themselves looking at a stall; juicy meat skewers just being grilled out into the open. He was about to approach the shop, but as soon as the stall owner saw him— he closed his stall."...I guess it doesn't matter," Vayne whispered to himself as he sighed. He didn't have any money to purchase anything anyway."Then let's just steal it.""Hm?"Vayne quickly looked behind him as he heard a voice, only to see Sheera standing there."..." He then turned to look if there was anyone else, as the voice clearly came from a man— but other than Sheera, there was no one there."Madam.""What are you doing?" The irritation in Sheera's voice was clear to hear as she looked at Vayne from head to toe."I'm… doing as you told me to, stretching my legs.""Yeah, and I told you to also go to the chief's house. How can you— and where are your shoes?""Oh," Vayne said as he looked down; his little toes, wiggling on their own, "I left them in your clinic.""Great, and now you got me in trouble," Sheera shook her head, "I told you to go to the chief's office, now I am hearing that one of my patients is terrorizing the streets.""...I apologize, I just… I have never realized how amusing and freeing it is to walk.""Forget it," Sheera hissed, "Let me lead you to the chief's house.""...You think they might have food there?""..."***"You need to leave the village.""...Hm?"Vayne, who was eating—no, devouring an insane amount of food could not help but finally stop moving his mouth as he heard the chief's words. As per Sheera's request, he was now at the chief's house; specifically, at his dining table."..." He looked at the chief, before finally placing the spoon and fork he had not let go of ever since he sat down."I apologize for intruding into your village, chief," Vayne then said, "But it is truly my demise that I have no refuge— Fergo is my only shelter in these dark lands.""Look, son…" The chief leaned closer to Vayne, his long and scraggly beard, almost touching the plate on his side of the table,"You don't have an Explorer's License, you are not here in the escort of an explorer, and you are not a citizen of this village……That means you can't be here.""...""But you're in luck. There's a convoy of merchants that arrived earlier this morning, and they are heading back to the Safe Lands. They are preparing to leave as we speak and will depart in a few hours," the chief said as he stood up, "I have already informed them that you would be joining their journey.""...I understand," Vayne could really only sigh, "You have been very kind to welcome a stranger such as I into your home, lord. I am forever grateful for that."
"..." The chief squinted his eyes from Vayne's words, "I don't know how you got here or whatever your issues are. But do know that if ever you return here with an explorer's license, you are very welcome to stay how long you like, officially……I heard the doc's a little interested in you.""I was under the impression that she hated me," Vayne let out a small chuckle as he lifted himself up, using the table as support. As did so, however……the entire table split in half."Hm…" Vayne could really only blink a couple of times as he looked back and forth between the table and the chief,"...I am going to repay for—""Get the fuck out of here!"***Vayne could really only sigh as he once again got kicked out because of his… sudden bouts of strength.Just what sort of Blessing did he actually have? He had heard stories of uncontrollable Blessings… but that usually ends in the Holder of the Blessing dying at the first instance. But here he is, still alive.Just… what is triggering it? Or rather… how?He needs to control this before anyone actually gets hurt and ended up being the same as the mug, the cabinet, and now the table."..." He then looked at his hands for a couple of seconds, before once again walking around. This time, however, he has a destination. Not the caravan, not yet— but to an empty lot.It was time to see how this… Blessing of his work once and for all.***"So… you're the weird fuck that's been walking around our streets.""...""..."Perhaps he should have gone straight to the caravan, after all."Why doesn't it work?"If frustration had an aura, it would probably be the sighs that currently filled a certain alley in one of the streets of Fergo. After much searching, Vayne found an empty space to learn how to harness his Blessing. The alley was bright, it only went one way since the other side was blocked by crates— it was the perfect area to practice. The sun was still very much scorching the already dried lands; and partnering that with the cold breeze, it would have probably been refreshing to the feel if the alley didn't smell like piss and feces— but that was probably the reason why the alley is empty in the first place.Vayne chose to ignore the smell, however, as the caravan will be leaving in an hour or so. He wanted to at least know how to activate his Blessing, 'less he wanted to hurt people. He would also be vulnerable and wouldn't be able to protect himself in the long journey they have ahead.2 weeks, anything can happen thenBut why……Why can't he activate his Bl
"I told you, imbeciles, to just let me go.""...""My head hurts, fucking hell… everything… everything looks so slow."A whirring whistle whispered in the air. The clouds of dust and any puddle around Vayne's misty silhouette, rippling away like an endless barrage of raindrops were falling on them."You… you're a Blessing Holder!?""What? What was that? Can you speak faster? Oh… oh wow, this is weird.""..." The voice that was coming out of Vayne sounded weird; almost as if his voice was multiplied but at the same time muffled. It sounded… ethereal. The thugs then watched as Vayne's hand was suddenly raised. And then almost instantly, it looked as if he was looking at them one by one— it was hard to discern what it was he was truly doing."You guys… should run," Vayne then muttered, "I… can't control this well."Everything looked slow. Vayne could see the specks of dust in the air floating ever so slowly as he breathe through them; the ripple beneath his feet, he could see every wave
"Just drink, we have enough supply to last us 2 months. Seriously, how did someone like you even reach Fergo?""..."'I died and magically appeared in front of Fergo's gates,' was what Vayne wanted to say to his… cart mate.He didn't have any energy to talk, however, as he felt his lips chafing even with just the tiniest of movements. And that wasn't the only thing that was dried, Vayne's bright auburn hair feels like it would be enough to fry an egg on it due to the scalding rays of the sun. They were in the region of the Dark Continent called Halbarn— which translates to the 'Boiling Field' in one of the local languages. Halbarn, however, was not even the hottest charted region inside the Dark Continent; there is said to be a land where their lakes were magma— just another proof that the Dark Continent was a… magical place.Still, for someone like Vayne who was used to a colder climate, Halbarn might as well be hell. How a region like this existed could only be explained by magic.
"That's not a fucking weapon! Damn it! It doesn't matter, just do whatever you can to protect the carriage, we will reward you handsomely! Bash them or something!"The knight, Rex, didn't really think Vayne could be of help. With his size, an uruc would probably just step on him.But he'll be a good distraction, and that was all they needed. He already saw him earlier when he woke up— he was able to move away from another uruc."Trent, get ready to carry—" And as soon as his eyes landed on his remaining comrade, he saw him being cleaved in half by a large axe."Trent!" Rex could really only cry out as he pushed the two urucs he was fighting away; he wanted to rush towards the beast that was already heading towards Alisa's carriage, but alas— he already had his hands full just fending off the two urucs. No, there were now three of them as the uruc that Vayne ran from has finally joined his kin."Mistress Alisa, run! Just run!"And as soon as his words thundered in the air, the door of
"You dare trick me?" "...Are you on drugs, madam?""W… what did you say?""I was asking if you are perhaps influenced by illegal substances, madam.""You—""M'lady, is everything alright!?"Alisa was about to raise her hand, but before she could do so, the sole surviving knight that served as her escort, Rex, suddenly opened the carriage doors."What… is happening?"Rex could really only squint his eyes from the scene. From his view, it seemed like Alisa was getting ready to slap a helpless boy that was groveling in front of him.…But how could that be so, when this helpless boy was the one who saved her from a fate worse than death? And Alisa noticed this too, as she saw the look in Rex's eyes that seemed to be judging her and her entire person."It… It is nothing, sir Rex," Alisa could only lower her hands as she cleared her throat, "I… was just startled when our… benefactor woke up so suddenly.""..." Rex looked back and forth between Alisa and Vayne for a couple of seconds, befor
"Truly, I thank you for letting me be a disturbance in your travels.""Not at all, Lord Vayne. It was nice having someone to talk to other than the horses. Maybe after I'm done with… telling the families of my comrades of their and, and you're done with the Explorer exam, we can have a drink."Somewhere in the wide fields of the city of Termont, the carriage that Vayne had been on for weeks could finally rest, as Vayne said his goodbye to his temporary companions."I'm afraid the chance of a fledgling like me passing the exams is almost impossible, Lord Rex. First-timers rarely pass, if at all.""Well, kid. You got here right on the day of the Yearly Exam, I think that's not a coincidence.""I'd… call it fate," Vayne could not help but let out a chuckle, "And you did hasten our travels when you found out I was partaking in the exams.""Well, if it is your fate not to pass, Lord Vayne……then that is all the more reason to drink!" Rex then suddenly burst out in laughter as he tapped Va
"...Ugh."Once again, Vayne's head was filled with a pain that was enough to almost cause him to cry. It wasn't as bad as whenever he used his Blessing, of course— that was a different kind of pain.He forgets the pain immediately since he always either faints or blacks out whenever he uses his Blessing, but now that his mind was slowly getting used to it, he could finally explain the feeling. It was almost as if someone was grazing a corrugated stick into his nostrils, then leaving some bits and pieces inside it."..."It would seem like that was his favorite thing to do now— pass out.Well, at least this time, he wasn't alone. He was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of people that were passed out— lined in a single straight file in a way that Vayne could almost not even see the end; he seemed to be near the end of the line, but it was hard to see due to the dark.Considering they were organized this way… maybe the others were actually dead and they were preparing to bury them?".
The 'Oohs' and 'Aahs' of awe continued for almost an entire minute as everyone's eyes were looking at the son of the Prince of Explorers. As for Vayne, he made sure not to stand out; his hood, fully covering his face as he imitated the others as they stared at Vale. Vayne, however, could not help but feel slightly irritated— his fate was practically sealed by Vale's mother, but it was ultimately him that betrayed him.By all means, he should feel enraged just by looking at him— but he was not, he was just irritated and annoyed. He and Vale could have really been close if it wasn't for the simple fact that he tried to kill him.And so, Vayne could really only let out a sigh. He didn't return home immediately so that he wouldn't meet anyone from the Valentine manor. But now here they are, the very patriarch of the family and his youngest son.[Some of you may think that I introduced my son as a favor, but no,] Valerion then raised his hand as he gestured to the examinees to quiet down,
