"Just drink, we have enough supply to last us 2 months. Seriously, how did someone like you even reach Fergo?"
"..."'I died and magically appeared in front of Fergo's gates,' was what Vayne wanted to say to his… cart mate.He didn't have any energy to talk, however, as he felt his lips chafing even with just the tiniest of movements. And that wasn't the only thing that was dried, Vayne's bright auburn hair feels like it would be enough to fry an egg on it due to the scalding rays of the sun.They were in the region of the Dark Continent called Halbarn— which translates to the 'Boiling Field' in one of the local languages. Halbarn, however, was not even the hottest charted region inside the Dark Continent; there is said to be a land where their lakes were magma— just another proof that the Dark Continent was a… magical place.Still, for someone like Vayne who was used to a colder climate, Halbarn might as well be hell.How a region like this existed could only be explained by magic. Vayne, however, has a theory— he always thought there were shards of glass littering the skies of Halbarn, causing the rays of the sun to be amplified… which is ultimately still magic.Vayne wanted to look up if there were any signs of glass above them; But alas, any movement seemed to sap the life out of him.Lucky for him, the caravan had extra covers and sunglasses to spare; if not, then he would probably be a grilled human right about now."..." And so, Vayne just moved the one thing he could, his eyes. He looked at the armored escort that was guarding the 2 carriages— and none of them had any shade even despite their full armor which should be boiling right now.Even their horses didn't show any signs of discomfort.No doubt, some sort of magic was cast on them, similar to the barrier that surrounded Fergo to keep them comfortable.If Vayne was right, based on their formations… they were knights.Is the woman inside the carriage some sort of nobility, then? Perhaps even royalty?If so, then that's good for them, Vayne thought as he let out another sigh and took a sip of water from his jug.With them here, the caravan should be safe from any harm. Vayne wanted to see some action to get a chance to use his Blessing, but this is good too."..." They have been traveling for hours in this red desert, and yet not a single beast has shown itself.It made sense, the monsters should either be asleep right now somewhere underground— no wonder the caravan chose to leave when the sun was at its highest.If Vayne heard it right, then Derek, the caravan manager, is an Explorer with a decent amount of Fame. All the other coachmen were the same; no doubt they were some kind of Explorer guild.Vayne always had a grandiose opinion of the Explorers since they were the most sought profession in the Safe Lands… but they just look like everybody else.Vayne once again let out a breath as he tucked himself inside the covers even more. The heat was making his head even fuzzier… perhaps it was okay to rest?And so, with that thought, Vayne closed his eyes; surrendering to the fatigue that clouded his mind.With these kinds of people escorting and guarding the caravan……there was nothing to worry about."...""...""Protect Mistress Alisa!""Derek is dead! We're on our own!""..." Vayne was expecting to wake up feeling completely fresh with a clear mind. But alas, the ache that was previously just in his head was now surrounding his entire body.He slowly opened his eyes, only to see the boy sitting beside him lying on the ground.No, both of them were lying on the ground— the only difference was that Vayne was lying face first… and he still had the rest of his body— the boy only had his head, neck, and some parts of his shoulders left.…Vayne didn't even know his name."Kh…" Vayne struggled to lift himself as he sat up. Come to think of it, this was the first time he was seeing a dead person.…So why?Why doesn't he feel anything? He read that most people puke at their first sight of gore and death.But him? He… just feels uninvolved."..." Vayne then started looking around, only to see the cart they were riding on now shattered into pieces; at least that might be the cart. It was hard to discern since all the carts seemed to have been destroyed.He then looked up at the sky, the blistering sun, at the very least, was no longer present."Protect Mistress Alisa!"Vayne then finally turned his attention to the voices he heard as he woke up, only to see the knights fighting against… something.There was previously a dozen of them… now there are just two."..." Vayne slightly squinted his still slightly cloudy eyes to get a better sense of what they were fighting against, and there, he finally saw.Skin, as dark as the night itself; but seemingly covered in chalk that held the color of the Halbarn deserts.They were almost as tall and wide as two men; their muscles, seemingly exploding with each movement."...Urucs," Vayne whispered. Orcs that were native in Halbarn; their explosive muscles were a result of digging through the soft red ground of the region— and judging by the red chalk still firmly attached to their skin……they have probably been waiting or even following the caravan.Just what— !!!And before he could continue his thoughts, Vayne's eyes turned wide as an almost moaning whistle whispered into his ear; and once again, everything around him turned slow.Vayne turned around to see what was creating that whistle, only to see an axe— no, perhaps it looked more akin to a hoe if anything. But it didn't matter, whatever it was, it was only an inch away from hitting his head.Vayne took in a small but very deep breath; and as soon as he felt a pain slashing on his cheek, he quickly pushed himself back; his body, rolling several times on the soft ground as everything once again moved at a normal speed.The uruc seemed to have been surprised by this, as Vayne could hear it screeching and talking in its native language… all while violently pointing his axe at him."...Hm," Vayne looked the uruc straight in the eyes as he stood up; their eyes, reflecting each other almost as if creating a silent promise to kill each other.And so, with a breath……Vayne ran away.He slightly limped as he made his way to where he would be safest— the two remaining knights that were still desperately trying to protect their liege."You, you're from the caravan!? You're still alive!?" One of the knights that were fending off two urucs at once quickly noticed him approaching, "Grab a weapon, help us!""...Weapon?" Vayne blinked a couple of times, "What weapon!?""Just loot from the dead bodies!"Vayne then quickly looked around, finally noticing the corpses that were sprawled and littered on the ground; the dead urucs, clearly outnumbering the people of the caravan."...Tch," Vayne could really only grit his teeth as he picked up the first weapon he could get his hands on."I said grab a weapon!" The knight screamed."This is the closest weapon I managed to purloin!" Vayne also roared as he raised… a shield that was almost half the size of his body."That……that's not a fucking weapon!""That's not a fucking weapon! Damn it! It doesn't matter, just do whatever you can to protect the carriage, we will reward you handsomely! Bash them or something!"The knight, Rex, didn't really think Vayne could be of help. With his size, an uruc would probably just step on him.But he'll be a good distraction, and that was all they needed. He already saw him earlier when he woke up— he was able to move away from another uruc."Trent, get ready to carry—" And as soon as his eyes landed on his remaining comrade, he saw him being cleaved in half by a large axe."Trent!" Rex could really only cry out as he pushed the two urucs he was fighting away; he wanted to rush towards the beast that was already heading towards Alisa's carriage, but alas— he already had his hands full just fending off the two urucs. No, there were now three of them as the uruc that Vayne ran from has finally joined his kin."Mistress Alisa, run! Just run!"And as soon as his words thundered in the air, the door of
"You dare trick me?" "...Are you on drugs, madam?""W… what did you say?""I was asking if you are perhaps influenced by illegal substances, madam.""You—""M'lady, is everything alright!?"Alisa was about to raise her hand, but before she could do so, the sole surviving knight that served as her escort, Rex, suddenly opened the carriage doors."What… is happening?"Rex could really only squint his eyes from the scene. From his view, it seemed like Alisa was getting ready to slap a helpless boy that was groveling in front of him.…But how could that be so, when this helpless boy was the one who saved her from a fate worse than death?And Alisa noticed this too, as she saw the look in Rex's eyes that seemed to be judging her and her entire person."It… It is nothing, sir Rex," Alisa could only lower her hands as she cleared her throat, "I… was just startled when our… benefactor woke up so suddenly.""..." Rex looked back and forth between Alisa and Vayne for a couple of seconds, befor
"Truly, I thank you for letting me be a disturbance in your travels.""Not at all, Lord Vayne. It was nice having someone to talk to other than the horses. Maybe after I'm done with… telling the families of my comrades of their and, and you're done with the Explorer exam, we can have a drink."Somewhere in the wide fields of the city of Termont, the carriage that Vayne had been on for weeks could finally rest, as Vayne said his goodbye to his temporary companions."I'm afraid the chance of a fledgling like me passing the exams is almost impossible, Lord Rex. First-timers rarely pass, if at all.""Well, kid. You got here right on the day of the Yearly Exam, I think that's not a coincidence.""I'd… call it fate," Vayne could not help but let out a chuckle, "And you did hasten our travels when you found out I was partaking in the exams.""Well, if it is your fate not to pass, Lord Vayne……then that is all the more reason to drink!" Rex then suddenly burst out in laughter as he tapped Va
"...Ugh."Once again, Vayne's head was filled with a pain that was enough to almost cause him to cry. It wasn't as bad as whenever he used his Blessing, of course— that was a different kind of pain.He forgets the pain immediately since he always either faints or blacks out whenever he uses his Blessing, but now that his mind was slowly getting used to it, he could finally explain the feeling.It was almost as if someone was grazing a corrugated stick into his nostrils, then leaving some bits and pieces inside it."..."It would seem like that was his favorite thing to do now— pass out.Well, at least this time, he wasn't alone. He was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of people that were passed out— lined in a single straight file in a way that Vayne could almost not even see the end; he seemed to be near the end of the line, but it was hard to see due to the dark.Considering they were organized this way… maybe the others were actually dead and they were preparing to bury them?".
The 'Oohs' and 'Aahs' of awe continued for almost an entire minute as everyone's eyes were looking at the son of the Prince of Explorers.As for Vayne, he made sure not to stand out; his hood, fully covering his face as he imitated the others as they stared at Vale. Vayne, however, could not help but feel slightly irritated— his fate was practically sealed by Vale's mother, but it was ultimately him that betrayed him.By all means, he should feel enraged just by looking at him— but he was not, he was just irritated and annoyed. He and Vale could have really been close if it wasn't for the simple fact that he tried to kill him.And so, Vayne could really only let out a sigh. He didn't return home immediately so that he wouldn't meet anyone from the Valentine manor.But now here they are, the very patriarch of the family and his youngest son.[Some of you may think that I introduced my son as a favor, but no,] Valerion then raised his hand as he gestured to the examinees to quiet down,
"Get… Get off me!"Vale's groans and frustrated whispers were being drowned by the hurried screams of the other examinees that were currently trying to drag him down, quite literally. The race had already been going on for minutes, and he wasn't even halfway to the finish line because there were still some that wanted to pass through different means."I said get off!"Vale kicked his feet as a woman suddenly grabbed his leg. But even then, they persisted like ants. There were already other people who passed the halfway point; and if this continues further, he might actually not be able to move on to the next phase."Fuckers… I didn't want to do this!"Vale then let out a roar as he leaped almost 4 meters into the air— and with the sound of thunder, an invisible force pushed him straight back into the ground; his fists slamming violently onto the field."!!!"The soft ground instantly burst; erupting into a wall and burying most of the people that were following him."..." Vale looked
"Are you sure this was broken?""...Yes?"In almost a complete contrast to the vast hall before, Vayne was now inside an immaculate ward; the scent, similar to Sheera's clinic. But of course, that is to be expected, because that is exactly what it was— a medical hall for those that were injured from the previous exam.Unlike Sheera's rundown clinic, however, this one had all sorts of apparatus that Vayne had not seen before, even in books— fortunately for Vayne, unlike a handful of those that passed the exam, he wasn't in need of their services."I think it's just a sprain,""Hm?"Vayne was currently being assessed and examined because of his broken arm… or perhaps not? He was sure the bones in his arm were completely fractured, the fact that it was dangling like a wet noodle earlier was proof of that.But now, as he checked it again, all that was left was a swollen arm that looked like a bloated sausage."..." From the previous test, as well as being transferred to a different area;
"I wish to be an Explorer……for the sake of being an Explorer.""...""..."And then, there was finally silence between the three as Mathilda and Mattheus once again looked at each other. The two then looked at Vayne after a few seconds, before a smile started to grow on all of their faces."Well… alright then, I'll drink some water to that," Mathilda then nodded and chuckled, "To our goals and dreams!""To Destiny!""Hm," Vayne nodded as he too, raised an empty cup."Okay, now that we know each other…" Mattheus squinted, "Why do you talk like that, and why are you covering your face, Vayne?""...Is there a problem with my dialogue?""Yes, exactly," Mattheus said as he pointed at Vayne, "That! Are you some kind of scholar or something? A poet?""Oh, I dare not claim to be any of those things," Vayne waved his hands, "I've only read a lot of books.""So, you're like smart, then?""No," Vayne shook his head, "Just a little knowledgeable, perhaps.""There's a difference?""I… just know s
SFW 36 "We're running low on supplies." "And whose fault is that!? We're supposed to have a month's worth of supply for 10 people, there are only 7 of us!" "It should be fine, the door is opening a few hours from now. Hoho." "Stop talking like an owl, you big useless, hair lump of muscle! We don't even know what's on the other side or if the skinny small stranger really read it right!" "Oi, the guy has a name." "I don't fucking care. As long as he wears that silly eye mask, he remains nameless to me." A few days in the empty, bleak, and cold, darkness of the dungeon; the seven remaining Explorer candidates were still alive and well—perhaps too alive. Don Grecko and Mavey's voices echoed through the corners of the dungeon where their light could no longer reach. The two have been bickering and arguing non-stop for an entire day, making Vayne and the rest of the candidates treat them like white noise already. Vayne and the others were just looking at the colossal door in front o
How did Vale know his name?-- is what Vayne thought for a second. But since he didn't really make an effort in hiding his name, the only thing he could really do was act as naturally as possible.And so, he subtly pulled his hood tighter and cleared his throat to make sure his brother wouldn't be able to recognize his voice."Yes," he then said in a deep and somewhat raspy voice. And as soon as his words crawled through his brother's ears, Vale could really only surmise that Vayne was probably already an old man."I… never thought it was a common name.""No," Vayne quickly said in haste; fortunately for him, the knowledge he garnered in reading all of those history books will finally be put to use,"It's a very common name in Ludia." Not really, but the pattern of their names was similar to his, "...Did you happen to know someone with the same name?""...Yes. He was the one I was speaking about earlier," the tone of Vale's voice started to weaken as he looked to the side,"A… anyway—M
SFW 33“What… befell upon all of you?”There was a sense of dread looming around the air; even without a tragedy happening, the interior of the dungeon they found themselves in was already dreary and ominous. But now, with all of them carrying a sense of hopelessness on their faces, Vayne was once again reminded of the true reality of the exam and what it means to be an Explorer.Throughout the days he and Nisha were exploring the island and hunting treasures, Vayne was having fun. How could he not, when just walking with both feet was a privilege to him?And now, seeing his brother lying unconscious on the ground and missing an arm. He… didn’t really know what to feel."We were being attacked when the ground opened up," Mavey, the girl that was even shorter than Vayne, was the one to answer his question,"It all just happened so fucking fast that none of us could react at all. Well, not all of us…" She then breathed out as she looked at the unconscious Vale."It's my fault." A loud, a
“We’ll… be okay.”--- Vayne no longer knew how many times he uttered these words. He kept repeating it over and over again hoping that it might be true but seeing as darkness was all he could see, there was no way to actually know. The only thing he knew was that a violent pour of vapor was escaping his mouth and nose right now; the cold, beyond chilling as he couldn’t even move a single finger in his body without exerting a great amount of effort. No— at the very least, his body found itself shivering and trying to fight off the cold as much as he could. But Nisha? Her body was completely frozen still and almost held no signs of life. If it wasn’t for the slight warmth that was escaping from her nose, then Vayne would have thought her dead already. He crawled near her and wrapped his arms around her waist and chest, completely hugging her back and even heavily breathing into her neck so he could try and provide her all the warmth he could give…. but it obviously was not enough. “..
"W… wait, be very gentle with it." "Relax, I know a lot more about this than you." "W… why are you using your teeth?" "Some like it." "...Wha—" "There, see!?" Vayne could not help but close his eyes as his face was showered by… bits and pieces of the mechanism that was locking the chest Nisha found beneath the pool. He didn't seem to mind, however, as his eyes even widened as soon as Nisha's fingers lightly brushed across the chest. "O… open it." "I am, can you just have a little patience!?" Nisha raised her voice as she slightly pushed Vayne away. Her face, however, failed to hide her excitement which was even more pronounced than Vayne, "Things like this… should be treated with utmost care." And with those words, she very slowly opened the chest; both of their breaths, almost enough to blow the cover away. And with their eyes filled with nothing but excitement, the insides of the treasure chest almost blinded them as… …it
"No, I'm certain now… …this will work." The leaves that have been falling endlessly around Vayne started to slow down, along with everything else that Vayne could lay his eyes upon. It was always a spectacular sight to see everything around you just frozen— no matter how many times Vayne experiences the world like this, it was something he would always be amazed at. But for now, however, he had something to accomplish. And so, he took his eyes away from the frozen world and started running in it; each of his steps, causing the clouds of dust and dirt beneath his feet to float and flutter. He tightened the shield that was attached to his arm as he continued to move forward. And soon, the dried leaves and their shavings were no more as the soles of Vayne's shoe hit the surface of the water. It rippled, of course— but there aside from being incredibly unstable, the difference between the ground he once stood on and the water was becoming… non-existent.
"She uttered the name of my father... ...Valerion Valentine." "!!!" If Vayne's mouth wasn't covered by Nisha's hand, he would have already coughed. "That is why I want to become an Explorer," Bruno breathed out, "To get a chance to talk to Valerion eye-to-eye." "..." "..." "And to reach that goal… I must become a solitary creature," Bruno then turned around and started walking away, "A creature that stands alone. And so, I'm saying goodbye now. But if fate allows it… …then we will meet again." And so, Vayne and Nisha watched as Bruno disappeared into the forest; the leaves around him, almost echoing his… emotions. "..." "...I'm just gonna say it, he's weird as fuck," Nisha then quickly muttered, "Anyway, now that he's gone, I need to tell you something… …I found a treasure." "..." "..." "...Why aren't you saying anything?" Nisha then turned to look at Vayne, not realizing she was embracing him and s
"..." "..." The deafening silence of the forest was not something Vayne expected. He had always read that one would hear whispers everywhere and that it felt like someone was always watching your every move— but he always thought that they were just a way to express a certain emotion… …he didn't think that he would actually find himself looking over his shoulders every second that passed. And he swears he was seeing several pairs of eyes staring at him from between the cracks of the trees. It… was somewhat terrifying— the forest not permitting any light to enter its domain didn't help. And so, Vayne just decided to distract himself by looking at the uruc he killed. This could be considered only the 2nd life he willingly ended, and yet for some reason, he already felt numb to it. Even when he tries to remember Mathilda's eyes as she drew her last breath, Vayne… didn't feel anything. In the books, it is said that killing never truly gets easier.
"...Fuck." Nisha could really only let out a sigh as she watched the scenery slowly unfold in front of her. She glanced at Vayne to see what he thought of the situation, but like her, the only thing he could really do was watch. He seemed a little tense and curious, however, as he raised his shield and sword from time to time. "..." Nisha looked at him for a few moments more, before turning her focus back to the ice woman. Although Nisha hasn't talked with her even once, she still could not help but express her condolences to a fellow examinee. For her to have reached this far, only to soon be devastated and defiled by the two urucs slowly closing in on her… truly, Nisha shares her pain. "Oh well… that's life," Nisha then said as she quietly crawled back, "Let's go. The urucs will definitely smell us after they're done with her." Nisha grabbed Vayne's wrist… but found him not even moving his feet even for a single inch. "...Are you sure s
