Chapter 11- Uncovering the truth 1

Meanwhile, Devian was on his way to check on the sheriff at the station, on getting to the entrance far away he sighted the sheriff tiptoeing away from the station. Watching his surrounding while he made his way to wherever he was going.

“What is he hiding? and where is he going?" Devian thought. “Maybe something's wrong at the station”

Devian decides to follow him and see if he found out anything about what he was investigating.

He stopped in the middle of a wooden house in the middle of the forest, the Sheriff looks to see if he was alone before proceeding into the house.

“Something is dirty, I need to find out what the sheriff is up to" Devian whispers to himself. “Or do I call the other first?”

“Why can't he just come out and ask?” Devian asks himself while shaking his head. “I'm just being paranoid again...”

Devian approaches the door cautiously and listens for any signs of movement inside the house.

He hears nothing. He places his fingers against the knob slowly and turns it. He pushes the door open and slowly steps inside the house. His eyes wander around, trying to figure out where the sheriff would go.

“We need to find a solution, a way to break the curse" the sheriff's voice could be heard talking to someone.

“Sooner or later the chase is going to come for us,” another voice says out loud.

That voice, it's familiar to me... Devian thought as he looks to the source of the voices. “Who’s that? And why does he sound so familiar”

The person speaks, “If only we could kill him now without anyone getting hurt...”

“I agree but let's not forget that the curse would only return once the person who cursed us was killed”

“Right, that's true. We need to wait until we find another witch with powers that could defeat this demon before acting. And we need to get rid of the curse as well.”

Devian tries peeping closer, only to see two familiar faces. The sheriff and the mayor argue for control over the fate of the town. They stand next to each other. Their eyes lock as they talk about killing the demon.

“It's all his fault, he got us involved in this now he's the only one the demon isn't going to. Every night I can't sleep because I fear I will be haunted by that hell freaks” the mayor growled.

The sheriff looks shocked as he watches the mayor speak about the demon so freely. He turns his attention back to the demon's plan and thinks about ways to stop him. After thinking for a few minutes, he turns to face the mayor.

“Mayor”

The mayor glares back at his ally angrily.

“We need to get rid of him soon before more people die,” he said with malice.

“And how do we do that? We barely even know how to defeat him!”

“With authority. Let me do my thing; the rest will be up to you”

“Well then” the mayor looked annoyed, Consider my part done. All I care about is I want no one to find out the truth about our illegal activities”

The sheriff nods. Then the two of them turn towards Devian who was watching them in silence.

“Ah, Sean, nice to finally meet you! You are just in time,” the mayor says.

“Just in time? In what way?” Devian asked suspiciously.

“For us,” the mayor smiled smugly as he looks behind him to show Sean a group of men dressed as police officers; several guns strapped to their backs, holding their rifles tightly in their arms.

“Tie him down" the mayor instructed his guards as Devian just stood shocked.

Minutes later Devian is tied down to the table, shirtless while a rat was placed on his stomach with a cage covering them.

“You monster, what are you doing?" he asked while struggling to get himself free

“You know the truth Devian, and we can't allow you to expose us," The sheriff says with an evil chuckle.

“But I swear...I haven't told anyone!” He exclaimed. The rat bites him causing him to scream.

“Those rats are hungry ones kept for days in a dark place when it starts they eat your whole stomach down to your intestine” the mayor smiles as he pokes through the cage.

Devian's expression changes to fright as he trembles under the horrible torture the rats are putting him through. It's almost impossible for him to breathe, but he can't seem to scream due to the rat biting him.

"Now you must tell the truth," The sheriff says. “And it won’t take long before you become very uncomfortable"

“Ok, I promise I haven’t told anyone anything," He manages to choke out as he squeezes his eyes shut tight. As hard as he can, he strains to pull at the ropes around his wrists.

“Let's start,” The mayor says, pulling on the rat's leg causing it to jump off him.

“Now,” he adds, grabbing the rat by its tail. As the rats noticed the smoke placed on top of their cage while there started to dig through Devian's stomach. He screams and gasps uncontrollably as tears form in his eyes.

After a few seconds, a small hole was dug in the floor of the cage. With the hole large enough the rats start climbing through. One of them climbs up the back of Devian's shirt and continues digging through until reaching his intestines; he continues chewing through his body.

“Hey, hey!" the sheriff shouts. “Get that damn rat out of here!"

Once the rat is removed, Devian coughs for air, wiping the blood from his mouth with his sleeve. Tears are rolling down from both of his eyes as the rats finish their job on him. Finally, after devouring every single piece of food within reach, the rats lay their ears flat on their heads and close their eyes contentedly.

“See? That wasn't that bad, right? Now...tell me the truth...” the sheriff asks while sitting across the table from him.

“I-I didn't mean to! I swear to you I didn't mean to”

“Yeah? What did you mean when you said that? Because I have a hunch that you did.”

“I...I wanted you...to...find out..." he whispers, unable to look the sheriff in the eye. “I promise—"

Before speaking an Axe beheaded Devian, leaving his decapitated body on the table in front of the sheriff.

“He's just going to be another burden,” the voice says while he walks back out of the house. “And get a way to get rid of the body”

“ Yes sir” one of the guards answers as he goes into the house, dragging out a cart. Soon the body is laid on the cart.

The sheriff gets in the cart while shouting instructions to his crew as they load his cart.

Meanwhile, Eric could be seen breaking through a house alongside Ryan, trying a way to find out the truth. “Isn't this too risky?” Ryan says out silently

“No, it isn't, we just search the entire house to see if we can find any evidence. I advise we split up” Eric says as he points to the side and begins to walk away. “Maybe we should check the upstairs as well?”

“Alright, then what? Shouldn't we try searching the basement first?" Ryan follows Eric, following him along.

“Nope, we'll just do a quick round through the whole place and search the rest from outside” Eric continues walking forward.

Ryan sighs heavily. “Alright, I trust your judgment then”

Eric stops walking for a second to make sure Ryan followed behind him. When he notices Ryan is close, he keeps walking. He continues to make his way around town searching for the best route, hoping to find out anything that could help him get his family home.

As they enter the living room furnished with lots of things for entertainment.

“What is it?” Ryan asks, noticing that nothing has changed since the last time they were here.

“Do you see what I don't?” Eric turns to stare at him.

“I don't understand” Ryan tilts his head to the side.

“The whole town languishes in poverty while the Mayor is here enjoying everything all by himself,” Eric says while going to notice a pic of the mayor before an orphanage taking pics with lots of children smiling. “Outside he's seen as a responsible person. Where was this taken?”

“The orphanage of course” Ryan answered with confidence in his voice.

“They probably had pictures taken in those places”

Eric ignores Ryan’s answer and continues to scan the room with a deep frown on his face.

“Look at this,” Eric pulls a picture frame out of one of the shelves nearby. “I think he has taken this photo,” he shows the photo to Ryan, showing the Mayor in his formal clothes.

Ryan examines the photo closely and sees that the Mayor wears a smile on his face. However, the image in the frame feels unnatural to him, like the mayor isn’t really happy in the picture.

His eyes linger on the mayor longer than necessary.

Eric stares at Ryan in confusion, “Are you ok?”

Ryan snaps his head upwards, looking confused.

“I’m fine, sorry” Ryan clears his throat and continues to inspect the photo.

“So then let’s start with some stairs” Ryan suggests pointing to the staircase which leads up to the second floor.

“Ok, but I'm not going to waste any more time. If we can’t find anything here, we'll go straight upstairs and see if we can find a window or something."

“Got it,” Ryan responds while heading up the stairs. Eric follows them and entered a room which of course would be the mayor's bedroom.

Eric goes to the wardrobe opening it to find a brown envelope. He opens it to see it was a cheque and some other receipts for various gifts and souvenirs received over the past two years.

“This was sent out just yesterday," he explains to Ryan who nods and continues to explore.

“We need to find where these guys came from,” Eric says.

“What? How?!” Ryan exclaims exasperated and frustrated.

“Well, maybe the mayor knew about the curse. Or he's involved in some kind of deal" Eric says while sighting a bill in an A2 paper. “This showed the price of profit SCarville gets and the debt paid back, but it says here most of the expenses go to the Saint Orphanage, and there aren’t any signs of anyone paying for those costs” he shows the document to Ryan.

“Wait,” Ryan starts. “Does that mean he might owe the Saint Orphanage money?”

“Could be” Eric replies. “I think the mayor is hiding something. But if so why hide it inside such expensive gifts, he doesn’t know that someone knows?” he adds.

“We need to investigate this further" Ryan concludes. "Let's continue to search around this mansion" he decides. "You keep going, I’ll take care of investigating in the kitchen"

“Why not use the attic instead?” Eric asks. “There might even be clues there"

“I think you're missing the point. There are no secrets there, no one wants to steal anything there” Ryan explains while entering through a door leading to the attic.

He grabs the flashlight on his belt and makes his way down the stairs leading from the attic, leaving Eric to search through the library.

The attic was filled with bookshelves, and dusty shelves filled with books and random items. Some are old and worn, and others are new, colorful, and well-decorated. Many of them had pictures of people and towns that weren't there. In many places in the room, books are piled up.

While scanning the area, he finds a photo book that caught his attention. It was a black leather-bound book with faded gold letters writing in it:

'For the record,'

“This has to be it,” Eric says. He puts the book to the side and continues his search for the information he needs. He finds a couple of papers with notes, but nothing else in the attic. After searching the room again, he decides to leave the attic. He takes a quick moment to examine the floorboards of the house, and as he does he notices a dark stain. Upon closer inspection, he realizes it was blood. It appeared that the blood trail went somewhere near the fireplace and ended at a wooden beam on the wall that had been cut through. As he moves further into the attic, he looks for other areas around the house.

Eric walks past the room full of broken toys towards the next, this time
