“Thank you…” Her mother gave him a gentle smile and wrapped a protective arm around her daughter.

“Let’s get her cleaned up and then head home, hmm?”

“Sounds wonderful.”

When she awoke the following day, her mom was sitting next to her bed holding her hand.

“You’re awake,” she said softly, her fingers gently running up and down Emily’s skin. “You were sleeping so peacefully I decided to stay and wake you up once you woke up…it took a while though. How are you feeling today?”

Emily let out a soft sigh and rolled onto her side. She propped herself up against the headboard and leaned back against the pillows. “Fine,” she mumbled, closing her eyes. “Everything hurts…everything aches. My leg especially.”

Her mother chuckled lightly, brushing her bangs aside. “That doesn’t surprise me…you were screaming and fighting for a long time yesterday.”

“I’m sorry,” she replied, opening her eyes again.
