Charlie's face looked pale because he was thinking too much about Mary and Evelyn. Even though he didn't want to think about Mary, the image of the woman's face kept appearing as if beckoning for help. The thing he really hated was that he felt uncomfortable because of Mary's shadow. Charlie seemed to feel like he had failed as a husband because he had not succeeded in educating and protecting his wife.

In fact, it was all Mary's own fault that she shouldn't have to worry about. But, what can I say, Charlie is really too kind and not the type of person who 'has the heart'. Charlie was only afraid that bad news would come regarding Mary's safety.

Sometimes it occurred to me that Mary could have been killed because of Roland, the bad thoughts of his imagination made Charlie lose his appetite. In addition, Evelyn's condition is still not recovered and he keeps calling himself and Mary delirious. Moreover, Evelyn was taken to hospital, which made Charlie even worse.
