Eddie couldn’t shake Axton’s words. They echoed in his head, louder each time. *“Stay away from Agatha, or she’ll ruin everything.”* He knew Axton was right in some ways—Agatha had secrets, and she’d been hiding things from him. But the pull of her plea, her desperate voice as she asked for his trust, gnawed at him.

He tossed the phone onto the bed and ran his hands through his hair. He couldn’t think straight. The weight of it all was pressing down on his chest. His family’s company, his loyalty to them, and his personal connection to Agatha were all tangled into a knot he didn’t know how to untangle.

The door to his room creaked open slightly, and his younger sister Jennifer peeked in. She had that concerned look on her face, the one she always wore when she knew Eddie was struggling with something serious.
