The journey through the cavern stretched on, but no one spoke. The tension hung thick between the four boys like an invisible fog. Their every step echoed against the cold, smooth walls, and the rhythmic pulse of the spire behind them faded into the distance. Orin’s vision still weighed heavily on Kade’s mind, the cryptic words of the Keeper echoing in his thoughts.

One must fall, and all await.

What did it mean? Who would have to die? Or was there a way to escape the sacrifice altogether?

The deeper they moved, the more the air seemed to thrum with energy. It wasn’t the gentle hum they had felt near the spire, but something darker, more foreboding. The walls of the cavern were slick with moisture, and the faint glimmer of crystals seemed to flicker as they passed, like dying stars. Kade’s skin prickled.

“I don’t like this,” Zane muttered, glancing around. “It feels wrong down here. Like we’re being watched.”

“We are being watched,” Jett said quietly, adjusting the settings on his wrist device. “The energy levels are spiking again. It’s like something’s tapping into our movements. We need to stay sharp.”

Kade nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. The more he thought about the Keeper’s words, the more unsettled he became. They were meant to fix this, but the prophecy seemed to have other plans. The Rift had chosen them, drawn them together with purpose—and yet they didn’t know what that purpose was, not really. Could they truly stop this cycle? Or were they simply playing into the hands of something far older than themselves?

Orin broke the silence. “I don’t know what I saw back there,” he said, his voice trembling. “The visions… the symbols. It felt like… like a warning. But it wasn’t just a warning. It was a call. A call to all of us.” He wiped his face, looking down at his feet. “The spire isn’t just a place of power. It’s a prison. A gateway.”

Jett turned to him. “What are you saying?”

Orin met his gaze. “The Rift is bigger than any of us. It's a tear between dimensions, a place where worlds bleed into one another. The Keeper was right about one thing: we are part of a cycle. But it’s not just a choice between saving or destroying. It’s about breaking the cycle itself.”

“What if we can’t?” Kade whispered, the fear in his voice more evident than he cared to admit. “What if we’re supposed to fail?”

“No,” Zane said firmly. “We won’t fail. We’ve come too far. If there’s a way to stop this, we’ll find it.”

Kade looked at him, wondering if Zane truly believed it, or if he was just holding on to that hope because it was all they had left. But before Kade could voice his concerns, a flicker of movement caught his eye.

They had reached a narrow passageway, the walls lined with more of the glowing crystal, but something had changed. The ground beneath their feet seemed softer now, as if the stone had turned to mud. The air grew warmer, the oppressive chill of the cavern dissipating. The passage curved ahead, and Kade could see a faint light in the distance, like a star at the end of a long tunnel.

He squinted, heart pounding. “Do you see that?” he asked.

Jett looked up, eyes narrowing. “Yeah. There’s light ahead. Something’s there.”

“Stay alert,” Zane muttered, his hand tightening on his rifle. “We’re not alone.”

They crept forward cautiously, their shadows stretching long and thin in the dim light. The tunnel curved again, and as they stepped into a larger chamber, the ground beneath their feet gave way, and they tumbled into an open space.

The fall wasn’t far—only a few feet—but it left them disoriented. Kade rolled to his feet, heart racing. He looked around, trying to get his bearings. They were now standing in an enormous cavern, its walls covered in strange markings that seemed to pulse with energy. A massive, circular platform stood at the center of the room, surrounded by glowing symbols that spiraled outward. It looked like an ancient ritual site.

“What is this place?” Orin breathed, stepping forward.

“This is…” Kade started, but his voice trailed off as he saw what lay at the center of the platform.

A figure.

It was unlike any creature Kade had ever seen. Its form was humanoid, but its skin was a smooth, translucent black, like a shadow made solid. It stood motionless at the center of the platform, its body wrapped in intricate, glowing runes that shifted with each movement of light.

“What the hell is that?” Jett whispered, wide-eyed.

Kade swallowed, stepping forward instinctively. There was something in the figure’s gaze—a haunting emptiness that chilled him to his core.

Before anyone could speak, the figure’s voice echoed through their minds. You have arrived at the final trial.

Kade felt his pulse quicken, his mind racing. Final trial? What do you mean?

The figure’s eyes glowed brighter. The prophecy is not one of salvation or damnation. It is a test. A test of will, of strength, of heart. The figure’s voice was deep, resonating in their bones. You are the Four Bearers. But only one will emerge with the strength to close the Rift. One must prove themselves worthy to sacrifice all. To seal the wound of the universe.

The words hung in the air like a weight. Kade stepped forward, his heart thundering. “What do you mean by ‘prove ourselves worthy’? How do we do that?”

The figure tilted its head, and for a moment, the room seemed to flicker, as if the very air around them were bending. The path will not be clear, Bearers. The Rift chooses who will remain. The prophecy unfolds in its own time.

Orin’s voice trembled. “We’re supposed to kill one of us, aren’t we?”

The figure didn’t answer directly, but instead, the platform beneath their feet began to shift, the symbols glowing brighter. A low hum filled the chamber, and the walls seemed to close in, creating an oppressive, claustrophobic feeling.

You must face your own fears, the figure said, its voice now taking on an almost predatory edge. The Rift feeds on weakness, on doubt. Only the one who can conquer their own darkness will be the one to claim victory.

Kade clenched his fists, feeling the pressure building. This wasn’t just a prophecy; it was a game—a deadly game with the lives of everyone in their world hanging in the balance. But who would be the one to step forward? Who would be strong enough to bear the weight of the Rift?

Zane took a step forward, his eyes hard. “I don’t care about this prophecy. We’ll fight until the very end. No one has to die.”

The figure’s glowing eyes narrowed. That is your choice. But you will face the consequences of that choice. If you cannot conquer the darkness within yourselves, the Rift will consume all. It always does.

Suddenly, the platform erupted with a flash of light, blinding them for a moment. When the light faded, Kade saw that they were no longer standing on solid ground. Instead, they were floating above an infinite void, stars swirling around them in a vast cosmic expanse. The air around them crackled with energy.

The test has begun, the figure’s voice echoed, reverberating in the void. Face your darkest fears, Bearers. And know that not all who enter will survive.

Kade’s breath caught in his throat as the ground beneath his feet began to fade away. A chill ran through him as the stars around him seemed to shift, revealing strange, otherworldly creatures—monsters, nightmares—manifesting from the darkness.

“What the hell is this?!” Jett yelled, backing away from the creatures that crept closer.

Kade’s vision blurred. In that moment, he saw a flash of his own fear—his father’s face, twisted in pain, the words echoing in his mind: You’re not strong enough. You’ll never be enough. It was the darkest part of himself, the voice that had always haunted him.

The ground beneath him seemed to crack. Kade stepped back, his heart hammering in his chest. But then, he remembered: He wasn’t alone. And they hadn’t come this far to fail.

“We’re not alone,” Kade said, his voice trembling but resolute. “We’ll face this together.”

Zane, Orin, and Jett nodded in unison, each one fighting their own battles, their own fears. Together, they would face whatever the Rift had in store. Together, they would overcome this darkness.

The test had begun. And they had no choice but to face it.
