Dropping a Spell Book

After a week of monitoring, Luke had a good idea of the routine followed by the three direct descendants. The group consisted of eight people: the three direct descendants and five guards.

Aaron and Tilly had been in the First Rank for some time, while four of the guards were experts in the intermediate stage of the First Rank. The only person in the Second Rank was the oldest guard, who appeared to be in his early thirties.

Luke knew all of this thanks to his Eighth Rank Core, which allowed him to easily see the cultivation level of others.

After training for about six hours inside Rotten Valley, the group would return following the same route, passing outside the Piggy Bar. Unlike at noon, when the whole group would go together, on the way back Adam would walk quite far away from them.

"There's no way I can carry out my plan at noon. I must take advantage of the boy going away from the group in the afternoon and make my move at that time. I must act now, every day that passes is advantage I gift to the members of the Rockwell Family."

Luke's plan was simple. Create a lot of chaos and put on a performance worthy of actors working in the most famous theaters. The first thing he had to do was to avoid making Tristan suspicious.

This was the easy part of the plan. For this, Luke arrived at the Piggy Bar as soon as it opened its doors and drank alcohol as he had rarely done in his life. By doing so, he got himself a ride home and was automatically off Tristan's list of suspects regarding the events that would take place in a few more hours.

"Damn, how can this alcohol be so bad? The Royal Family has no shame in cutting corners, those who drink this stuff daily are definitely masochists." Luke felt the world spinning around him. However, he already expected this outcome and simply used some of his World Energy reserves to expel the alcohol from his system.

Although this would prevent him from using his best tricks in the big show later, he wasn't willing to take any risks regarding his identity.

"Well, now I have to get out of this makeup and wait for them to come back from Rotten Valley."

Luke decided to keep his natural appearance, as he would cover his face with a mask. In addition, he put on some dark torn clothes full of dust. The idea was to give the impression that he was a cultivator on the run.

This was a one-man show, and he would need to use all his World Energy to pull it off.

These days he had managed to discover that Adam had a greater affinity for the thunder element. On the Aurora Continent, World Energy itself had no elemental properties and those who reached First Rank could in theory use spells of any element.

However, no one did this. Doing so was simply stupid and a waste of time. The universal rule was that cultivators should focus on learning spells belonging to the element with which they had the greatest affinity.

The reason was simple, using spells that did not match your element's affinity would lead to a greater World Energy drain and consequently less effectiveness in battle.

Luke was a rare exception who rarely appeared on the Aurora Continent. Although his greatest affinity was with the dark element, he also had an extremely high affinity with the four most common elements: earth, water, wind and fire.

This was the main reason he had created so much trouble for The Circle. It was too difficult to corner him in a place where he was at a disadvantage, as well as having an exorbitant amount of spells.

Gathering World Energy and refining it in the Core was something that all cultivators could do. The only differences were talent, which limited the speed at which this process could be done, and elemental affinity.

In a battle, the decisive factor to determine the winner was the spell grade and the mastery he had over them. They were classified as Common Grade, Advanced Grade, Elite Grade, Epic Grade and Legendary Grade. In a place like Ludwit City, the best spells were at the Advanced Grade, which were only held by the patriarchs of the respective families due to their high value.

"I don't have too many thunder element spells, and I need to give him something that can be learned quickly. Almost all the spells I know can only be used at Fifth Rank due to the large amounts of World Energy required. I guess I'll give him Thunder Rupture, it's complex enough that I can better understand its potential, but it doesn't require an exorbitant amount of World Energy to use."

Luke had two Advanced Grade spells in his hands that were suitable for Adam, Thunder Rupture and Thunder Bomb. Thunder Rupture was a movement spell that allowed one to travel small distances at an explosive speed, while Thunder Bomb was an offensive area damage spell.

Thunder element movement spells were very rare, so it was a more suitable option to enhance Adam's arsenal. Besides, simply manifesting World Energy was good enough as an offensive weapon at these low levels given the destructive nature of the thunder element.

"Well, I've got it all planned out. Let's just hope there aren't any surprises and that the kid isn't a fool." With these last words, Luke left his house and headed for the place where he would hold his show, about 300 meters from the Piggy Bar.

---

Seven hours later...

'Here they come. Excellent, it's time to start my show, hehe'.

As had been the case for the past few days, Aaron and Tilly came along with their guards, while Adam walked apart from the group. This would make it impossible for the guards to intervene and steal the spell book.

When Adam found himself about fifty meters from his position, Luke's heart sped up involuntarily. This was a kind of excitement he hadn't felt since his youthful antics, apparently these three years of inactivity had taken their toll.

The moment he reached the spot, Luke leapt from the shadows and crashed into Adam as he shouted.

"You damn dog, how long do you plan to keep chasing after me? Is your life that boring? I've already told you I'm not giving anything to you, I'd rather die than have these spells fall into the hands of someone like you!" Luke imitated the voice of someone on the edge of insanity to make it all more convincing, while at the same time he dropped a book at Adam's feet.

He then ran about a hundred meters in the direction of the outskirts of Ludwit City, in the opposite direction of the Piggy Bar, and stopped.

"Are you not planning to give up? You leave me no choice. Take this, Fire Rain!"

Suddenly, a fireball appeared over Luke's head. Fire Rain was an Advanced Grade spell that consisted of creating a large fireball from which a rain of projectiles came out.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

The fire projectiles shot everywhere, setting dozens of stores on fire in an instant. This was the most important part of the plan.

Using Fire Rain at its current level meant depleting much of his World Energy reserve, and barely leaving enough to use in case of emergency. This way, any cultivators in the vicinity would be distracted by helping people out of the stores and wouldn't follow him.

Before escaping into the dark alleys, he focused his gaze on Adam and watched as he quickly hid the spell book in his clothes. His efforts had not been in vain.

'Well, it's time to run so I don't get caught. Just as there are good-hearted people, there are also bastards like me. Who knows if someone decides to follow me out of greed?'

With this thought in mind, he disappeared into the shadows that covered the alley. However, when he was halfway down the path, he felt a few pairs of eyes settle on his body. Three guards of the Rockwell Family had split from the group to rob him, while the other two had presumably stayed behind to protect the three descendants.

They fully understood their position within the Rockwell Family. If something were to happen to one of the direct descendants, ending up as dog food would be a very optimistic outcome.

Luke understood why they had decided to pursue him despite casting an Advanced Grade spell. They probably thought he was injured, which combined with the little money they were getting for their work, made greed get the best of them.

'Looks like I've got company. Luckily, it's not the guy in the Second Rank. Although these three will be a pain in the ass, they're just annoying flies.'

Luke would take it upon himself to give them a few lessons in robbery and assassination before sending them off to the next world.
