20 Minutes Later

“Alright, we’ve rested long enough for everyone to regain some energy. Let’s keep moving up,” Max announced firmly.

No one complained as they stood up and continued climbing. They reached the 21st floor, then the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, surprised to find no zombies on the stairs or in any of the rooms. The lack of threats made the group subconsciously relax. Some of the ordinary humans even began murmuring among themselves. As the saying goes, a drop of black ink spoils the white, and the murmuring grew louder and louder until Maverick couldn’t help but frown.

Seeing Maverick’s displeasure, Max immediately understood his irritation. Just as Max was about to order the group to keep quiet, a loud banging sound erupted from a door beside them as they reached the 26th floor. The sudden noise froze everyone in place, silencing them instantly.

Terror gripped the group as the banging continued, growing louder and more insistent, as though it had attracted more zombies to join

Seeing this, Max’s eyes lit up with happiness. He looked at Maverick with genuine gratitude and said, “An all-access key! You’ve been a huge help this time, and I’m sure the others will be grateful too. With this key, everyone can have their own rooms, keeping them apart and reducing the chances of conflict.”Twenty-five or twenty-six agitated people crammed into one room was a nightmare scenario Max could already foresee turning into chaos if left unchecked. With the key in hand, the two of them spent the next thirty minutes systematically clearing each room. They encountered a total of ten zombies, dispatching them easily. Since the zombies weren’t in large numbers, the task proved manageable for the duo. Finally, with all the zombies cleared, Max went downstairs to address the group of people who were waiting anxiously. Their faces carried a mixture of hope and fear as they waited for news.“The floor is clear now. You can all come up,” Max announced calmly, watching their expressi

“What a sad fate. Humans can never go against destiny, no matter the amount of preparation—except with true power. If only I had the absolute power of greed in my previous life, it would’ve been so much easier to kill that annoying Bruce Chen,” Maverick thought, sighing as he strapped the flying swords to his waist. With weapons in hand, Maverick immediately began devising a plan to grind the zombies. He needed to kill them in large numbers without drawing too much attention; otherwise, a swarm could overwhelm him and slow his progress. The aftermath of the nuclear explosion filled the air with a hazy fog, no doubt caused by radioactive particles."I forgot to collect a better mask," Maverick muttered, slapping his forehead. His impatience to increase his power had made him overlook this crucial detail.“Biolens, is there a way to become immune to the radiation in the air?” he asked, finally remembering the AI embedded in his consciousness. Its robotic, feminine voice responded instan

From the first floor, the battle had erupted like a storm of death, and Maverick had been forced to retreat relentlessly until he reached the twelfth floor. It was here, standing amidst a sea of destruction, that he finally confronted the horde toe-to-toe. The trail of carnage he left behind was nothing short of apocalyptic—corpses piled high, torn flesh smeared across walls, intestines strewn like grotesque decorations, and brain fluids pooling in sticky puddles. The stench of decay and iron choked the air.Even Maverick himself was not spared from the macabre artistry of the battle. His clothes were soaked in congealed blood and glistening brain matter, with bits of flesh clinging stubbornly to the fabric. His boots squelched with each step, coated in the crushed remains of human meat and viscous brain fluids. He looked like a warrior sculpted out of gore, a living monument to the fight for survival. After catching his breath, Maverick’s gaze swept the ruined stairway. He found a ro

But, at that moment, a thunderous crash echoed through the area as a car was hurled aside like a discarded toy, revealing a monstrous creature that immediately locked its predatory gaze on Maverick. The beast stood a menacing 6 to 7 feet tall, its body form an abominable mutation of its former self— which was the once harmless Flying Squirrel. Its coarse, grayish-brown fur bristled with razor-sharp quills along its spine, glinting coldly under the dim light. The creature’s glowing, crimson eyes radiated primal bloodthirsty. Its patagium—the gliding membrane—had grotesquely expanded, its translucent surface crisscrossed with pulsating veins. Beneath its taut flesh, the webbing seemed alive, trembling with each movement. The beast’s fangs were long and curved like sickles, crafted for ripping flesh and crushing bone. Its muscular hind legs coiled and looked filled with terrifying power, ending in hooked claws capable of shredding metal like paper. With a swift swipe, his sharp combat knife sliced across the Sky Scourge's thick hide, carving a flesh wound. However, the damage barely registered, the cut appearing as nothing more than a thin red line against the creature’s hardened, almost armor-like skin. Maverick grimaced. His strength was too low to deal any real damage to the mutant monster, and every strike felt futile. The realization came fast, but Maverick acted faster. Using his knife’s failed slash as a distraction, he drove his foot into the creature's flank with all his might, propelling himself backward through sheer force. The momentum launched him several feet away, giving him just enough room to raise his gun. Without hesitation, he squeezed the trigger, firing two shots midair, both aimed squarely at the Sky Scourge's exposed neck.Roarrrrrr! The beast roared in fury and pain, its massive head snapping toward Maverick. The bullets had struck true, puncturing its neck and causing dark, viscous blood to ooze from th

“We are thinking of dividing into two groups,” Jennifer replied to him calmly. She immediately briefed Maverick on their next move, making him understand their plan. Jennifer was a secretary before the apocalypse; therefore, her communication and planning skills were top-notch, which was also one of the reasons Max made her one of the leaders of the group. Moreover, she was fair and beautiful to look at. Although no one had dared to act on their desires yet, perhaps it was due to her being stronger than an ordinary human, or maybe due to the stress of the apocalypse, no one had the time to consider such things.“We've decided that the first group of us should roam the floors below in search of survivors, while the other group of us should lead the stronger and braver survivors to head to the upper floors and get rid of the zombies there. This will increase the floors we can roam during our time here and at the same time save any survivors we meet,” Jennifer explained calmly without pa

1:50 PMThe sun bore down relentlessly on the deserted street, its rays glinting off the dried blood splattered across the tarred road. The heat only worsened the foul stench emanating from the corpses scattered around. The smell was both nauseating and revolting, as decomposing bodies and putrid bodily fluids filled the air with a sickening odor. Any normal human unaccustomed to such sights would struggle to keep their stomach contents down.Burnt and blackened cars were piled up against each other like pieces in a game of Tetris, forming an almost impenetrable blockade across the street. Zombies roamed aimlessly, their vacant eyes and jerky movements adding to the eeriness of the scene. Many of the buildings had been reduced to rubble by nuclear strikes, but a few remained standing, though barely. Their doors and windows were tightly shut, a clear sign that survivors were likely hiding within, hoping to avoid detection.Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat!The oppressive silence was abruptly sh

Maverick's whole body was covered in his own blood. His chest appeared slightly carved in, added with the claw marks on his chest, arms, and bruises on his face, with his hair dusty and messy. Max and the others could swear that no ordinary human would survive in such a condition, even if there was medical equipment around for them to use.“What the hell did this to you?” Max finally couldn't help but yell in shock. Not only him, but Judy, Divine, and Jennifer appeared to be in a state of shock too upon witnessing his condition. To them, the cold, heartless, ruthless bastard of a man called Maverick, who had no issues killing a fellow human in

Chapter 46: Going Back To The Tech Company

Grabbing the beast core, Maverick didn’t hesitate to absorb it. He knew time was of the essence. In his current weakened state, any beast daring to stride into Sabertooth territory had to be either incredibly powerful or at least on equal footing with the apex predator. If such a creature stumbled upon him in such a frail and vulnerable state, it would snap him in half and devour him in one bite without hesitation.Giving a swift mental command to his biolens, Maverick initiated the absorption process. His eyes fixed on his palm as faint energy began to seep from the beast core, flowing into him. Slowly, the vibrant hues of the core dimmed, its once radiant luster fading entirely. Within seconds, Maverick had drawn out all the energy it held.A chilling sensation coursed through his arm, spreading from his palm to his chest, then directly to his heart, before dispersing into his limbs. The pain in his body dulled, replaced by a cool, soothing comfort. Unable to suppress the reaction,

The knife stabbed into the Sabertooth’s chin, upward, dealing deadly damage to the vascular structures and soft tissues in the neck and throat region. This led to excessive bleeding as the carotid arteries—major arteries supplying blood to the brain, face, and neck—were severed. The rupture or puncture of the carotid artery caused rapid and severe bleeding, but that alone wasn’t enough to put the beast down. What sealed its fate was the damage to the jugular veins, large veins that return deoxygenated blood from the head and neck to the heart. The damage caused significant bleeding as well. However, due to its incredibly high vitality, the Sabertooth didn’t die immediately. It continued struggling violently for a while, before finally going limp.[Ding!]Hearing the notification, Maverick felt as though he’d finally escaped the depths of hell.[Congratulations, you've eliminated a peak Gamma-3 Sabertooth. 10 Energy Points Extracted.]Maverick didn’t even glance at the notification. Suddenly, a glowing orange paw appeared behind Maverick. He instinctively sidestepped, but it was a fraction too late. He couldn't believe how lightning-fast the Sabertooth's reaction speed was. Its attacks came in relentless waves, offering no reprieve—completely unlike the partially mutated zombie, which always needed a short pause before attacking again.Without a moment to spare, Maverick rolled to his side and turned, only to find the Sabertooth’s massive paw already arcing toward his face. Knowing fully well that the attack can smash his face to pulp, Maverick quick reflexes kicked in. Quickly raising his twin axes, he crossed them in front of him in a desperate defensive posture.BANG!The force of the blow slammed into him like a freight train, sending shockwaves through his body and crushing his internal organs. As the creature swiped, he sidestepped fluidly, evading the attack with practiced ease.Without hesitation, he grabbed the zombie by its filthy, matted hair and slammed its head against the concrete wall with a force that shook the foundation.Pop!The sound was sickening, like the shattering of an overripe watermelon. Blood and brain matter exploded outward, splattering the wall in a grotesque display. Maverick didn’t even blink at the mess. The structural pillar, weakened and barely holding on, gave way entirely. Hundreds of zombies caught beneath the rubble were obliterated. He instinctively retreated deeper into the garage, his boots scraping against the unsteady ground. "No," Maverick replied, shutting his eyes as he tried to absorb the large amount of information he had just received. It was overwhelming for him; he never expected the power levels of this world to be so complicated and intricate. Not only were the materials needed to break through to the next level hard to obtain, but even if one managed to gather them, there was still the chance of dying in the process, turning insane, or worse—mutating into a grotesque creature.Unlike in his world, where one only had to guard against developing an inner demon while cultivating, the challenges of this world were far more intense.Sighing in frustration and exhaustion, Maverick quickly turned his attention to the skills he had just unlocked as he massage his eyebrows.
