The morning weighed wordless between Cassio and Milena, who faced the gray sky as they stood at the bus stop. Cassio clutched the divorce papers in his hand while entombing the other deep in his coat pocket. Milena scrolled her phone, expressionless.
He turned to her then, his heart heavy either way. "Milena," he said quietly, first to break the silence, "are you sure about this?"
She let out a deep sigh, her eyes still on her screen. "We have been through this, Cassio. Yes, I am sure.
His jaw was clenched, but he refused to let the conversation go. "I mean, really sure. I'm giving you one last chance-one last chance to think about what we've shared, what we've built, even if it's small.
Milena finally lifted her head, and her eyes were colder than ice. "What we've shared?" She laughed in anger. "Cassio, what have we built? A shack in the middle of nowhere? A life where every penny is accounted for? I told you before, this is not what I want."
For the first time, Cassio's voice went spitty while talking. "I've loved you with everything I have, gave up everything for us-for you."
"That's just it, Cassio," Milena spat, her voice cold as ice. "You gave up everything. You left behind the life I wanted."
The weight of her words pressed upon him, sagging his shoulders. Before he could reply, Milena's phone rang. She peered at the screen, a small smile dancing across her lips.
"Yeah?" she answered, softer now. "Bruno, hi. Yes, I'm on my way now."
Cassio straightened up at the sound of the name and continued to listen in as she spoke.
"Yes, I'll see you soon. Don't worry, it's almost done." She giggled-the sound foreign and insincere. "Of course, I miss you too. Can't wait to see you."
She hung up and dropped the phone into her purse without a glance his way.
"Bruno," Cassio repeated, his voice laced with disbelieving incredulity. "So there's someone else."
Milena didn't bat an eyelid. "If you must know, yes. Bruno can give me the life I deserve. The life you couldn't."
Cassio's fists had clenched by his sides, but he made his body relax. "You mean the life of money, luxury, superficiality?"
Milena shrugged. "Call it what you want. At least I won't be struggling anymore.
The bus pulled up, its screeching tires ringing loudly in the air; its doors groaned open. Milena stepped inside first, wordlessly brushing past Cassio. He followed, heavy of heart, and chose a seat far from her.
The ride to the Civil Affairs Bureau was silent, each lost in their thoughts. Cassio stared out into the window; his reflection distorted because of the rain streaking down the glass. He wondered how things had come to this-how the woman he once adored could have become so cold and distant.
When they arrived, Milena moved quickly, her heels clicking sharply against the tiled floor of the Bureau. Cassio trailed behind, his pace slower, reluctant.
Inside, Milena approached the clerk with barely disguised impatience. “We’re here for a divorce,” she said briskly, handing over the papers.
He watched in silence as she signed her name without the slightest hitch. When it came to him, his hand hovered above the paper for a few moments before he finally scribbled his signature.
"Congratulations," said the clerk, stamping the documents in the most matter-of-fact way. "You are officially divorced."
Milena blew loudly, turning to Cassio with a triumphant smile. "Well, that's that. Finally."
Cassio frowned. "Finally?
She shrugged. “You heard me. These six months have been a nightmare, Cassio. I’m glad to be free of it—and you.”
Her words hit like a physical blow, but before he could respond, the unmistakable roar of a luxury car engine filled the air outside.
They turned to see a flashy, fire-engine red BMW pull up to the curb. The driver's side door opened, and out came Bruno Mancini-a short, stocky man, clad in an upscale suit that did little for his figure. His chains in gold and shades of oversized sunglasses screamed money, but the cocky grin that spread across his face was far from charming.
"Milena, sweetheart!" Bruno called, opening his arms wide.
Milena’s face lit up as she hurried toward him, her heels clicking loudly on the pavement.
Cassio followed slowly, his expression unreadable as he watched the scene unfold.
Bruno smirked at him, sliding an arm around Milena’s waist. “So, you’re the poor loser she’s been stuck with, huh?”
Cassio’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
Milena smirked at Cassio, full of even more confidence because Bruno was around her. "This is Bruno. He is all you are not, Cassio-successful, ambitious, rich. He can give me the life I deserve."
Bruno snorted, playing with a bunch of car keys and tauntingly dangling them. "Yeah, buddy, maybe next time don't let your woman live like a peasant.
Cassio watched in dismay as Milena's eyes finally met his, the storm welling up from inside him. "If it is wealth that you want, well, I hope it finds you, Milena. Just remember one thing-money will never fill the void where love should be."
Milena snorted. "Save the lectures, Cassio. I'm through listening to you."
With that, she slipped into the passenger seat of the BMW and giggled as Bruno started to rev the engine.
Cassio watched as the car disappeared into the distance, running him over where he stood-cold and alone in the rain. Sharp was the ache in his chest, but deep inside it, a spark of resolve had started to flicker.
She would have sold him out for money, but Cassio knew his worth wasn't tied up with her shallow desires. His life, his legacy, his strength-too big for her to understand.
Rain pouring down around him, Cassio turned and began to walk-heavy at first with every step, but with each of them, he felt the weight start to lift. This was not the end. This was a beginning.
The inimitable growl of some powerful engine sounded from behind as Cassio walked away from the Bureau, his thoughts milling. In time, he turned to see a gleaming black Mercedes-Benz SUV roar into view, its polished exterior glistening even in the overcast sky. The huge vehicle veered deliberately toward Bruno's parked BMW and, with a sickening crunch, the luxury car was flattened beneath the SUV's immense weight.
Cassio's eyes widened in horror at the audacity of such a move. A few feet away, Milena and Bruno stared aghast, their faces contorted in a mixture of horror and incredulity.
"What the hell?" Bruno yelled, running toward the wreckage of his prized car. "Are you insane? Do you know how much that car costs?"
The Mercedes' driver's-side door creaked open; out popped a vision of svelte poise. A woman in a tight black suit, heels clicking their weight in authority onto the pavement. Silvia had that kind of presence-magnetic-and her long, dark hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail, while her ice-blue eyes scanned the scene before her as if affronted by what she saw.
Who is vile enough to park such an ugly, obsolete monstrosity in the path of greatness?" Silvia's voice was silky but managed to ooze disdain as she motioned toward the crumpled BMW.
Bruno's face went beet red. "Ugly? Obsolete? Lady, that's a brand-new model! You're going to pay for this!
Silvia raised one perfect brow, her lips curling in a sneer. "Pay? For clearing that eyesore off the street? I think not.
Milena took one shrill step forward. "Excuse me, who do you think you are? You don't know who my boyfriend is?"
Silvia's gaze darted at Milena, taking her in with an almost amused expression. "Boyfriend?" she repeated mockingly. "Ah, you must mean this ogre who dares compare himself with men of true stature." She nodded at Bruno, even her tone dripping with sarcasm. "How charming.
Cassio stood quietly a few feet away, crossing his arms while he took in the scene unfolding in front of him. He said nothing, not interfering, content to keep on allowing Silvia to handle her own situation.
"Listen here, you conceited-" Bruno started to say, but was promptly cut off by the swift wave of Silvia's hand.
"Spare me the tantrum," she said briefly, voice peremptory. "You're making enough of a fool of yourself as it is."
Bruno's fists clenched at his sides; his mouth opened and shut, fishing for a comeback inside himself.
But Milena didn't flinch. Incensed, she turned on Cassio, her finger wagging at him in frantic time: "Is this another one of your crazy friends, Cassio? You think that even after I've left you, you can ruin my life?
Silvia's eyes flashed, and she took a step closer to Milena. "Ruin your life?" She had repeated in a soft, deadly tone of voice. "If anything, my presence here is the best thing that's happened to you. Though," she paused, her gaze wandering down Milena, "it's crystal clear that you wouldn't know value or power if they stared you in the face.
Milena's face colored. "Who do you think you are to talk to me this way?"
Silvia smiled, though it did not reach her eyes. "Who am I? Just someone who believes in honor and loyalty, two things which you seem to possess zero amount of."
Bruno.
