Chapter 3

"This steak is amazing!"

Shawn sliced the premium beef steak and ate it with gusto. A smile appeared as he chewed and tasted the rich man's dish. The meat melted in his mouth and was juicy. Every chew made Shawn feel happy. "No wonder the rich love to eat at expensive restaurants like this. This food is delicious!"

His face beamed. All this time, Shawn could only eat the cheap food he bought from the convenience store. He even got used to eating those non-nutritious foods.

He did that to save money and send it to his family in the village. There wasn't much he could eat. Fortunately, today, he could buy it with the money in the Black Card. It was a stroke of luck for Shawn to take the contract from Rachel. Shawn found it incredibly easy to use the Black Card. All he had to do was swipe the card, and he could get what he wanted.

As Shawn stood up, a slight vibration in his pocket stopped him. Shawn picked up his cell phone and looked to see who was calling him. Shawn sighed lazily when he saw that it was his stepmother, Lisa. He accepted the call with a weak voice, "Yes, ma'am."

From the other side of the line, a woman spoke in a shrill voice that hurt his eardrums. "Shawn, where are you? Do you have 400 dollars right now?"

Requests like this made Shawn feel lazy and reluctant to take calls from his mother. Lisa always called Shawn only when she needed money.

Shawn swallowed. "Mom, didn't I give you 450 dollars before? It was only four days ago, right? Why are you asking again? I haven't even gotten my paycheck yet this month."

Lisa became heated when she heard the rejection. She furrowed her brows. "Since when did you dare to go against me? Just send me the money. I need it. I know you must have hidden the money in your bank account."

Shawn clucked his mouth. "Mom should know that I haven't gotten a paycheck yet. I'm already struggling to live my life like this. Besides the money I give you, you always give it to Ryan, right? Why, he just uses it to get drunk!"

Her ears and forehead burned as she heard Shawn's reply. "Damn, kid! Don't you remember who raised you? You're an outcast! You should be grateful that I took you in and raised you. How dare you insult Ryan. I know you have money. Give it to me now!"

Lisa's habit of getting angry when Shawn didn't give her money made her even more displeased. The swear words that came out of Lisa's mouth sounded so annoying. She would only stop if Shawn sent her the money she asked for. If not, she would continue to babble and swear at him, or she would even come to Shawn's house and ask for money in person.

The money Shawn sent was always given to Ryan, Lisa's biological son—the money he would use to buy alcohol and get drunk on the street. Last time, he got drunk, wrecked a car, and injured a woman. Shawn had to send most of his earnings to settle the matter.

However, this time, Shawn was upset because Lisa had gone overboard. Asking him for money just four days apart was unreasonable. "I told you, I haven't gotten my paycheck yet!"

Lisa gasped in shock at Shawn's snapping words. "Look who's talking. You're just a loser and trash if I don't take care of you! You might even die and get eaten by dogs. Realize your place, damn it!"

Shawn glared, his heart feeling crushed by something tight. He also felt a pulse creeping into his head.

Shawn squinted when he saw that information. His resentment had already peaked, and he accepted the mission without a second thought.

Shawn swallowed, and then his eyes glanced sharply to the side. "Ah, never mind, stop your babbling. You're not my real mother anyway. You've never done anything, and you've always been a burden!"

Lisa was furious. "What an ignorant child! I've raised you all this time. Just wait. You'll be in trouble if you dare to go against me!"

Shawn was getting fed up with Lisa's threats. There was no point in arguing with this vain woman. "You ungrateful woman! I went out and got a job and lived rough for your selfishness, but all you do is ask and ask. You're just like a sponge, greedy and disgusting. "

Lisa was surprised that Shawn would call her that. "Unlucky child, who taught you to say that to your mother? Just wait there. Your father and I will teach you a lesson!"

Shawn clucked his mouth. "Go ahead. Come over. When you came, I was already gone. I became the son-in-law of Rachel's wealthy family. I don't need you anymore. You go live with your bastard son. I'm out of your fucking family!"

Lisa shouted in a shrill voice, "Asshole! How dare you--"

Shawn hung up the phone before Lisa could finish her tirade. He felt satisfied that he had said that to his mother.

Lisa, on the other hand, was so shocked that her heart felt like it was going to burst. Since taking care of Shawn from childhood, this was the first time Shawn had rebelled. Honestly, this made Lisa both sad and upset.

She yelled for her husband. "John! John! Come here!"

A well-built man in a t-shirt came up to Lisa and sat down beside her. "What's wrong, honey? Why are you looking so glum?"

Lisa glanced over while bending her lips downward. Her heavy breathing made her look very gloomy. "Shawn threw a tantrum and said he was leaving the family. He said he would marry a rich woman named Rachel."

John furrowed his brows, the atmosphere around him becoming more tense. He had never heard of Shawn doing such a reckless thing. "Damn kid, who turned him into that? Does he know the consequences of doing something like that?"

Lisa shook her head.

Shawn glanced at the mission window that was still plastered in front of him. "I did it. I was successful, right?"

[Ding!]
