"Hen-Hen?" Heath arched a brow when he saw his cousin waiting for him as he reached the main road.
"Yo!" the blond greeted before they both walked back to Henko's apartment.
Their way home was rather uneventful, marked only by light chattering. This was how Henko perceived their trip. Meanwhile, Heath took advantage of the situation, attempting to glean more information about his parallel self's old daily life from his talkative cousin.
Through his efforts, he did manage to gather some basic information and cross-referenced it with what he knew from his previous life. One noteworthy match was the names of his parents and a few others from his family tree. Despite differences in surname and social status, the core element aligned. This made him wonder if there were other similar facts that could be uncovered if he persisted in his inquiries.
Before he knew it, they were back at the comfort of their humble abode, preparing a meal for their dinner.
"So, do you feel at home in your new class?" the blond asked as they finished cooking.
"I won't call it homey just yet, but well, it's not as bad as the others made it sound. The kids up there are fun to be around," Heath said, taking a bite of his dish.
"Oh?" the older one arched a brow. "And here I was expecting you to come back crying and not wanting to work again because it was so bad or something."
"Now now, don't be rude. It's not so bad over there."
“Really?” Henko hummed, “But that’s not what I heard in the main building—”
The blond then shared what he had heard from his peers. Unfortunately, none of it was good news. The stories ranged from delinquents in his classroom bullying other students to the point of driving the victim to almost ending their own life, to devious rumors about one of his students trying to manipulate teachers for better grades.
What makes his blood boil the most is how these stories always place the blame on the students and never once consider the possibility of teacher negligence, assuming any of them were true anyway.
‘These are heavy accusations! Wouldn't any of them go to jail if any of these rumors were proven true? What are the adults doing that such deceitful words can escalate this far?’
—And yet, Henko wasn't done yet.
“I mean, drugs? At first, I can’t believe any of them would get involved in that kind of thing… But the more I heard about those kids, I don’t know anymore— eep!”
He takes a sudden step back, his gaze fixed on the abrupt intrusion in his line of sight.
Heath had twirled his chopstick dangerously close to Henko’s eyes with a cold glare and a plastic smile.
"I said, don't be rude, didn’t I~? Please watch your tongue, dear cousin~"
Wide-eyed, that blond turned his head back at the perpetrator, a comical thick mark on his head.
Henko snapped back, "The heck, bruh!? Are you going to kill me?”
However, the brunet only maintained his sweet smile, making the startled man gulp in fear.
"Ay-yo... No need to be so defensive," the blond threw his hands up in surrender, as he never thought the brunet could be this scary.
"The rumor was simply that bad, you see. I was just worried about you. It's honestly relieving that all of those are nothing but empty words."
The former royalty hummed, turning back to normal and eating as if he hadn't just about to stab those pair of jade eyes, "Well, I guess some parts of it are true. Regarding their grades, that is. I’ve seen the report and indeed, most of them need guidance in getting better scores."
"R-Right, it's rather unnerving to hear that they have been discriminated against by others that far." Henko sighed, genuinely frustrated with himself. "There are some diamonds in the rough within the bunch. If only they could get a chance or be given by someone."
The brunet stared at him.
"What?" That blond shot him an annoyed look.
"Aren't you, like, the homeroom of Class A-9? Or was it Class B-9? Either way, won't the Chairman hear you out?"
Henko huffed, "Dude, I used to go to the same school as that guy in high school at one point. Words won't get through to him." He replied, stabbing the pile of ginger before taking a mini bite and continuing. "If anything, I'd be advising you to stay as far away from him."
"Huh?" Curiously blinking, Heath then asked, "But why?"
“‘Why’ you asked?” Henko hummed, thinking of a way to explain it.
"I guess if we're to put it simply, it would be the phrase 'If there’s no merit, why bother’? That guy is an opportunist through and through after all,” Henko waved his hand.
“Hee… But that doesn’t sound so bad, though. I mean, being an opportunist isn’t a crime, right?”
“Well, yeah. And he’s not a criminal either. Or at least that’s what he wanted us to believe from what he showed on the surface.”
“Oho~?” Heath arched a brow, “Are you implying that he’s involved in some shady syndicate under the surface or some shit?”
“Syndicate— what? No.” Henko scrunched his face upon the teasing.
“Well, I don’t know how clean he is in the eyes of the law, nor do I want to find out. I’m just saying that our dear chairman is as sly as a snake. He’d get what he wanted and he'd eat you alive in an argument. So, unless you are sure of a miracle happening, or you have an expensive proposal going on, I really won't recommend getting on his bad side." He warned seriously before then muttering a soft “Not again.” —which unfortunately went unheard of by his cousin.
Hearing that, Heath hummed quietly, 'Miracle, huh?'
"You know, Hen-Hen, there's a saying that a miracle won't happen if you don't leap."
Honestly, Henko can only facepalm upon seeing that confident smirk.
"Just... stay away from jail, hospital, and obviously don't die. Can you at least do that much?"
"No need to worry about me, dear cousin." That brunet grinned brightly with sparkles on his back.
"If things take a turn for the worse, I won't be the one in any of those places. I promise~"
—Poor Henko can only let out a tired sigh in response.
"Oi, Heath?" "Yes, Hen-Hen?" The brunet smiled innocently as the blond, annoyed with his companion, stared at him. "Where did you get that fedora?" "Oh, this?" Heath tipped the said item down, "I made it. Neat, isn't it~?" He grinned. Just like the birthday gift he made for his father figure, he recreated an exact copy to honor his mentor. "—NeAt iSn'T iT?" Henko mocked before sighing, "And just with what money did you use to buy the materials?" He won't even bother asking how this clumsy Kirby was even able to make something so high class without injuring himself. "Oh, I didn't need to buy anything. You already had an old, unused fedora in your drawer, gathering dust all alone in the sad corner. So I took it, used that as the base, and added some things here and there. Now, voila~!" "Voila, my ass! How the fuck did you make such a fancy hat so neatly?" Heath chuckled over his cousin’s freak outs, “Technically I didn’t make it, just reused it, but meh, Potato - Tomato, right?”
Heath hummed to himself as he flipped through more pages of the files in his current possession. In the name of collecting data about his new environment, Heath had observed their target the entire day before proceeding to ask both Perry and Lillian if they had any additional information on each and every student of I-9. After all, above all else, he was now a teacher. So, rather than focusing on his mutant co-worker, his primary attention should be on the students’ development. With that in mind, Heath carefully examined each file, paying close attention to every student's record. He reviewed their accomplishments, acknowledged their difficulties, and tried to understand what made each of them special. In his new role, Heath wasn't just keeping track of facts; he was also making initial notes on how to assist these young students in growing and succeeding in their futures. Regarding that, quite surprisingly, through the short observation, Heath discovered that the mutant had a few
"Pfft— BAHAHAHAHA what's with that apron?" Kian laughed as he saw the brunet's newly added attire, which clashed with Heath's already-questionable choice of clothing. "Maa~ don't you think it's sort of cute, Kianichy? I made them myself~" Yet, instead of feeling offended, the former royalty just grinned, hand in hip after putting down the fourth tray on the table. The home economics teacher actually felt rather proud of this project he’s wearing. After all, the decoration on his apron, while it might look rather silly, was meaningful to him since he added it to honor his parents. His mother always loved to wear frilly dresses when she could, and an embroidery of a lion honored his father, who used to be called The Young Lion during his reign. He knew that it's not good to drown in sorrow. So at the very least, he wanted to keep the memories dear and wear things that would prevent him from ever forgetting his regret. “Now, now, before we can start the class, I made some treats for y
Putting aside the initial shock caused by the uproar at the beginning of the class, everyone could now see how Heath was not only a prominent teacher but also an excellent cook.‘It’s quite amazing just how efficient Sensei is,’ Zane couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. There wasn't a single wasted moment. Moreover, the brunet displayed the patience of a saint, as evidenced by his tolerance for Zara’s clumsiness, Lia’s never-ending questions, and even Perry’s constant disruptions. It was surprising how unflappable he remained.Actually, that last part left Zane slightly baffled. “I thought the class would end up in disaster…”“I know right? I’m just as surprised,” Jitsuo expressed his astonishment. After the previous incident, the brunet eventually approached the sulking homeroom teacher, presenting a fresh batch of cupcakes, ones that were still in the oven, as compensation for what had transpired. Perry dubbed this as the only correct way to apologize after such a tragic prank.
"Enjoying yourself, Perry-sensei?" that brunet inquired as he walked towards the figure seated on the field, a gentle breeze brushed past them both. The said figure grinned in response, "Yep, as always~"With a stem of dandelion tucked behind his ear for some reason, Perry patted the ground next to him, inviting the home economic teacher to sit with him. The two were relaxing, and there was even this peaceful aura around the mutant."I was wondering why the kiddos were getting more energetic in the middle of their routine, well now I know why~" Heath chuckled as he glanced at the homeroom teacher while laying down a picnic carpet before lowering the basket he brought along."It's so hard to be such a motivational figure," Perry playfully complained.Heath shook his head, bemused, then took his seat. "I'm not even going to dispute that. The students adore you."To which, Perry replied with mirrored grace, "I can say the same with you, Heath-kun." That homeroom teacher was sincere howe
"Should we… be worried that those two are hitting it off this well?" Jitsuo sweatdropped. He was among the few students demoted to this class rank due to a drastic decline in his scores rather than bad behavior, just like some of his peers. By now, no one is even paying attention to the gym class or Lillian anymore, including Lia, who replied to their class rep with glee, "I don't know, man. But I'm preparing myself for something to happen." She was bemused by the sight of their Heath-sensei aggressively shoving the remaining contents of the food basket into their mutagenic Homeroom teacher's mouth. “Honestly, I’m not even sure what we’re witnessing right now, but shouldn't we interfere?” Zane sweatdropped at the rapid pace of their teachers’ bizarre and fast interactions. To him, observing these two felt like watching the personification of his last two brain cells at 2 am, counting down the hours to an exam. He found it both hilarious and concerning how, in one moment, the two a
"Hey, you," calling out the dazed brunet, Henko waved his hand in front of Heath’s line of view to gain the younger’s attention since calling his name doesn’t seem to be so effective anymore, “you okay, dude?” “ah, yes? Sorry, you were saying?” Lips pursed into a line, Henko was clearly unimpressed with his masking, “Is there something the matter, Heath? You've been so distracted since dinner time.” And it’s morning now. A brand new day, yet his cousin looked like he hadn’t even had a wink of rest. Much to his dismay, his intuition was right. Ah, sorry, it’s nothing much. There’s just something on my mind.” Sheepishly scratching the back of his head, Heath offers another smile in hope it’ll make the other less worried. However, unfazed by any of that, Henko, who has seen the exhausted look that the other slips up a moment ago, poked him with another question, “Nothing serious, but consuming your waking hours?” He made a face at Heath, eyes staring straight at the pair of brown, sho
As soon as he reached the school ground, he noticed that only Perry was in the teacher room. The mutant was comically writing in his planner, like he usually does during his morning routine, when Heath greeted him before heading to class. A yawn escaped his lips as he made his way through the creaky hallway. "Damn, I'm tired," he thought. He knew that Henko had been pointing this out during breakfast, but by then, his mind was still running a mile away. Meanwhile, despite the buzzing alarm in his head, nothing seemed out of the ordinary right now. So, whatever his Enhanced Insight was trying to warn him about, it likely wouldn't happen yet. Probably somewhere around noon, or at the earliest, when his two other coworkers arrived at the school. According to Perry, they would arrive in three hours or so because they had a meeting with the chairman first. "Honestly, the fact that the chairman is agreeing to any of this is—" he paused, searching for the right word. "Sick? Icky?" Well, at
