As soon as Modus faded away, the world melted into its usual color and time began to flow again. Will still stood by himself in the middle of the street. He acted rationally when everything was happening, but the reality of what happened suddenly hit him. He felt as though he had taken morphine. He was numb with euphoria. His worries melted away and his mind swayed as though he was floating in water. Yet, he started to wonder what he should do next.

"Become immortal? How am I supposed to do that?"

Will was familiar with the concept of ascension into immortality. His Chinese novels heavily included this idea as part of the main story lines. Unfortunately, in most of the novels that Will reads, this was a feat regarded as almost impossible. The characters that were able to achieve this state had a lot of help from other characters and developed surpassing talents.

"Sigh"

"I can't think like this. I've dreamed of this, now it is happening. I can't let it drift away or let it seem so impossible." Will thought.

Will understood what Modus meant. He needed to improve his skills and gain new abilities. Grinding was going to be the key to doing this. If he just focused on these two things at first, then the goal of immortality won't be too far out of his reach. Will smirked at the thought that the luscious figure that was before him would become his. Just as he began to fantasize, the system spoke.

"The user system shall begin."

"Begin? –Wait, what?"

Will knew that he had missed something when he was off in his daydream about Adelda.

"Ding! You have been given the class Sword Apprentice. You receive 600 bonus points as the first user on Earth to hold two classes. The system is ready to modify your body. Please say begin when you are ready."

"Huh?"

Will looked around to make sure that no one was around to see what would happen.

"Begin"

Will was blinded by a light that seemed to engulf his body. A cool calming sensation flowed about his body, Will felt as though he could feel all of the modifications that were happening to him, even down to the cellular level. It was as if he was both within and separate from his body. Then a wave of pain took over. It was a rough sharp pain as though he were being sliced by a thousand knives all over his body. When the pain reached his brain, he felt something change within him. He couldn't tell what it was, but he knew that something was different about him. The pain was rampaging about his head. It was at this point that Will realized what was happening. The two sensations were energies working together to change his physical body down to the very minute structure of his existence. When the two energies began to slow, the pain and pleasure began to decrease. Will was unable to comprehend this sensual experience of pain and pleasure. He lost consciousness.

When Will's eyes opened, he was staring at the ceiling of his room. He turned his head to see his aunt looking over him very concerned.

"Will, are you feeling alright?"

Will nodded his head. She was a very kind middle aged woman. She was one of the very few that Will felt cared about him. He assured her that he was well. His aunt interrogated him for a few minutes. She wanted to know what had happened. The neighbors found him unconscious in the middle of the street. Will told her that he must have overworked himself and passed out when he went for a walk. She didn't believe it, but she knew that she would be able to get anything else out of him.

After their discussion, Will's aunt went to make him something to eat. She wanted to take him to the hospital. Will was not against the idea, but asked that he have some time to rest and something to eat first. The moment she left the room, he stripped the clothes off of his body. He was eager to see if anything had changed. To Will's disappointment, there weren't many changes. He did seem to have a bit more muscle mass and was somewhat more defined, but there was nothing significant enough outwardly to notice if he wore clothes.

Will dismissed the idea that what had happened was a dream. Though he didn't look much different, he felt that something had changed. He felt stronger, agile and flexible. He tested his body by moving things about his room and stretching in different ways to see how far he could stretch his new body. He wasn't able to test his agility just yet. He was still in his room and his aunt would be suspicious if he left. However, he did notice more things that had changed. He didn't need his glasses anymore. They hindered his eyesight. Without them he could see farther and much closer too. He could see the lines on a fly's wing that was outside in the street; Will could even hear the buzzing of its wings as it struggled against a small breeze that threatened to blow it away. This was astonishing! His room was completely insulated, but he had the hearing abilities of a super being.

The more Will concentrated on these new abilities, the more he gained some control and understanding of them. He sat on his bed and closed his eyes to see what he could do. He could hear things within a 50 meter radius! Then a strange sensation filled his body. It was as if he extended outside his physical body. Will could feel the atmosphere around his body and feel every bit of moisture in the air. He could control it!

"Water Meister!" Will exclaimed in excitement.

He jumped off of his bed and ran to his bathroom. He opened the tap slowly and concentrated on the water that began to flow out of the tap nozzle. It didn't fall into the sink as it would normally. No! It snaked its way out of the tap and into the air as Will manipulated with his mind. He was able to coil the water around his body, moving it in every direction and shape he could think of.

Will wanted to test how far he could control water. He closed the tap and thrust the water in the shape of a snake outside the window. He slithered it in the air above his neighborhood, farther and farther from his house. Will couldn't believe how he was able to do this, and so easily too. When the snake reached about 15 meters away, he could feel his control of the water slipping. When it reached 30 meters, the snake fell apart and rained down onto the street. He knew he could control any amount of water within a 15 meter radius with his current level of power. But, he could only control its movement, he couldn't change the temperature, in other words he couldn't change it into a different state, such as steam or ice.

After more experimentation with his control over water, Will sat down on his bed again. He felt as though he were forgetting something important. He started to remember everything that had happened.

"Ah, the system, that's it!" He said aloud.

Just as he remembered it, the system flooded his mind with instructions on how to use the system.

Once a user becomes a part of the system, they gain abilities, powers, and a class. To increase their power and ability level, a user must gain experience. The way to gain experience is by being in the system and killing demonic creatures. By doing this, a user will be rewarded and level up. Users cannot leave a dungeon once it has been entered. Each world has a set amount of dungeons. A star on a dungeon represents 50 points that may be earned by defeating the boss. The reward goes to the user who defeats the boss.

The system selects users randomly throughout a world. Only a certain percentage of a population above a certain age may be a part of the system. When a user is chosen, they will remain in the system until the end of their life. To make a non- user part of the system, it will require a payment of 25 points. However, the system will determine their abilities and class. If a payment of 200 points to the system occurs, one can have any individual become a part of the system, and they will have the ability to choose their class, abilities, and parameters.

Every user has a menu with a list of five options.

[Information]

Information contains information on dungeons and creatures; however, all information has a price.

This also allows a user to talk to anyone in the world for 1 point. But, the user must know the individual's full name and have already met them. A user may pay 1 point to message anyone in the world for a day.

Moreover, this is where a user may add an individual into the system and allow them to state their class parameters and abilities.

[Stats]

This allows a user to view their abilities, level, and class.

[Storage]

This is a space of 1 cubic meter to store any non-living items. The storage space increases as the user reaches higher levels.

[Map]

Map shows a layout of the area up to a 100 meter radius around a user. It shows users and creatures that are within the 100 meter radius, depending on the circumstance. This too increases as the user reaches higher levels.

[Management]

This allows users to form groups with other users. These groups may be guilds, alliances, parties or an organization on a large scale.

To see this menu page, a user must close one eye and navigate using their hands.

As soon as this information had finished loading in Will's brain, more information began to flow into his mind. Something was different. This information was not about the system, it was about cultivation!

The information that flowed into Will's mind was about cultivation. There were three types of energy that a human was able to use: Qi, mana, and yuan. Qi was the energy of the body. Mana was the energy of the spirit. Yuan energy is a fusion of the two. There are different yuan energies, one that is primarily Qi, one that is primarily mana, and one that is a balance of the two. Once a player has reached a certain level of skill and ability, they are able to use yuan energy. The closer a player's yuan energy is to a perfect balance of the two, the better and more affective the energy is. It is when yuan energy is at a perfect balance, having equal amounts of Qi and mana; it is considered very high quality. These players are then called a practitioner. Practitioners have a greater advantage of other players who cultivate and absorb energy from the universe, because they are able to use both types of energies.Cultivation is

...Next thing Will knew, he was in a beautiful garden. It was decorated with beautiful flowers of all kinds. There was a big pond near where he was standing, and next to it was a table with two chairs. On the tables were delicacies, food like sandwiches, pigs in a blanket, cheese and many other things."This is..." Will was stunned by the sight. Normally he wasn't much for aesthetic beauty, but he couldn't help but marvel at the sight, especially the food. Will was a serious glutton. He loved any food, so long as it had starch, cheese and meat, especially meat. Will was once taught an African word by his best friend. It was nyama. It meant meat. Will noticed that his friend would always shout this when he saw a girl with an ass. At first he found it odd, but eventually he was doing it too!"Please join me." Modus was standing right next to Will. He pointed to

Chapter 7 – Sword Totem...Will was in the zone! He finally felt like he somewhat understood the essence of those words! It was only when he was about to die, that the idea hit him. Death was the end of a life! A previously obvious assertion that now bore so much weight.Or one could say the absence of life. Just like how darkness is the absence of light, or cold is the absence of heat. To understand death, one needs to start by understanding life.In everyday life, the cycle is constantly around us. When we accidentally kill an insect, or when we pluck a flower or even killing rodents in your own homes. Every human usually ignores such acts, yet they are in fact killing.Every human is a killer. When you engage in any one of these things you feel no revulsion, nor do you feel any guilt. In fact, it even feels natural. So why is killing other humans is treated differently? Because we make it relevant, we say we are justified in killing other creatures, because they are not sentient,

It looked to be daytime. Will was rather surprised. This is a dungeon? To be honest, the place didn't look like a dungeon; it looked more like an episode from a program on a nature channel. Will put the rusty sword into the storage ring and decided to look around.[Welcome to the dungeon King Yama's Gate]These words suddenly appeared in Will's vision.Ok. So this really is a dungeon. Will also noticed that his senses and strength were weaker here. As if they were being suppressed in some way. He climbed the tree quickly with nimble and agile movements, and when he reached the top, he looked around, only to see a ridiculous sight.Whatever was approaching, it was coming from all around Will, and as it got closer, trees were mowed down as if they were grass. This sounds like a monster horde. Indeed, just as Will thought, it was a horde of monsters. Or rather to be specific it was a pack, a pack of large grey wolves which had encircled Will from all directions. At first Will was happy. With such a great amount of enemies he could get the practice he needed. Soon however, Will's smile turned into a frown. The number of wolves seemed endless. It was as if a massive

There were only ten thousand at most in this one, were as the previous horde had hundreds of thousands, if not more.Unfortunately, it seems the difficulty was inversely proportional to the size. This small horde was far more difficult than the previous one. Not just because these wolves were stronger, but more importantly, because they were far more intelligent. When they attacked, they did so with order and near perfect teamwork. Unlike their predecessors, these enemies knew how to use their numbers, and their abilities well. They always attacked in groups of threes. One would attack with a barrage of wind blades; each one compact, powerful and well placed, then another guardian would attack from the opposite side with its claw

  • Solitary Sword Sovereign    The Nail That Sticks Out, Gets Hammered

Chapter 12- The Nail That Sticks Out, Gets Hammered...The system had four ways of categorizing skills. The first method was through skill books, which are dropped by demonic beasts once you kill them. This is purely a random process that depends on chance, because monsters can drop many things besides skill books, such as items, scrolls, ores etc.Modus had ordered Adelda to remove this aspect from every kill that Will made. Apparently Modus said that this difficulty will 'temper' the boy and make him stronger. He also ordered her to make the boy's map and information options inaccessible. He made her modify the system around Will quite a bit, and often to make his battles more realistic and bloody. One can try and emulate a skill from a skill book, if you do it successfully, you gain the skill permanently and the system will reward you, depending on the difficulty of the skill, for example, Will's water blade. It is a very common skill, one that the system has, thus it does not cou

His heaving chest and deep breaths revealed that he was tired. His expression displayed indifference, his faced hardened by constant battle. He was brandishing a sword, the edge of the blade covered in blood.Surrounding him, there were approximately 50 or so corpses littering the floor."Damn, these guys didn't give me enough experience! Boss, You There?

...As Will traversed the tunnel, he met a variety of different monsters, each troublesome in their own way. Yet, despite their formidability, each time Will fought he would adapt and achieve victory. The same applied even for the last batch of creatures he had to fight. Humanoid creatures that had blades as arms and an eel-like head. They were called gagan and had an E+ rank. Despite their rank, one was not that much for Will to handle, and a group was also easy to deal with. The Gagan were humanoid both in form and in nature, their team battle tactics were worthy of praise as far as Will was concerned. Their ability to use spaces and their communication was uncanny. All Will heard was something akin to squealing. Nevertheless, these squeals were definitely more than they seemed. The Gagan did not have any extra abilities besides having a tough exterior and being very nimble.Their blade-like limbs made for effective weapons, but there was no weapon that could pose less danger to Wil

...The first opening was an important event, particularly because it determined ones future cultivation path. Many warriors did countless hours of research and searched for areas with the most ideal locations for a breakthrough. Some even had so many resources they had access to places where world energy was so dense it liquefied.Since one's first opening decided their future path, it was crucial. Will had used his first opening to comprehend not an ability, not a technique, but an intent, and from one of the five constitutional base elements at that! Such an achievement was absurd. This had without a doubt meant that Will's path along the Dao of water would be smooth sailing if he trained hard enough. Little did Adelda know that Will did far more than just understanding a bit about water intent...At some point, Will had opened his eyes and had walked out of the water. His eyes were shining with incredible vigor and his entire temperament had changed. Aside from the obvious bruises

...Spiritual veins were veins that transported energy from the pores on the skin, to and all around the body. Meridians, on the other hand, were broad valve-like checkpoints that existed in the complex network of spiritual veins. There were actually thousands of spiritual veins, but only 20 of such meridians.Places, where spiritual veins intersected, were called acupoints. One could freely operate one's acupoints to assist in directing energy, but meridians were different. There were two types of meridians, called the Eight Gates and the TwelveDoors, respectively. How many meridians you had unsealed at birth was a measure of your cultivation talent. Especially your Gates: the more you trained, the more Doors you could open. The number of Gates however never changes, you are stuck with that number for life.In the beginning, Will had six Doors that were unsealed and five unsealed Gates. Each of the Doors was trait less and thus

At the bottom of the lake formed at the base of the waterfall, was an underwater cave. Within that cave was a young man, dutifully training his sword technique. This cave did not exist when Will first arrived here; he had dug it out to make it his temporary home. The creatures above ground were far too strong for him to fight constantly. Will had no idea where Modus had sent him, but he knew this was definitely a higher level area. The average creature here could easily give the Storm Wolf King a good fight. Thus Will decided to create a hideout for him to rest after a good day's adventuring. The inside of the cave was large, about 800 meters in diameter. The entrance to the cave itself was not that large and was usually frozen shut. Will would only create an opening while he was leaving or entering.Within the cave was a small lake with a somewhat large patch of land in the middle. From above the ground, it looked like the letter O with the water constant

He had been moving so fast that he could barely tell what the creature was. Even the usual notification that the system gave hadn't reached his eyes. All he had seen had been a weak, furry, humanoid obstruction, so he had taken care of it.With a frantic expression, Will ran forward as fast as he could within the jungle. From time to time he would come across a 'powerful' creature, but like the ape-monster from before, it would be greeted by Will's sword and sudden darkness. Will did not care who or what he ran into. Be it a creature, trees, rocks or any other obstruction within his path, he would merely swing his sword and make way. All his focus was on trying to make sure he was going in a straight line.

However, thanks to his explanation Modus had answered a few of the questions that had been pestering Will. Yet, even more, questions were created."Intent is very difficult to describe or explain, especially to those who have not yet experienced it. However, luckily you have quite an experience with it already. It's just that you did not realize It." said Modus with a cheeky grin.At this point, Will had more or less recovered quite a bit so he was able to sit up straight. As far as Will was concerned even if he had been called an ant Will would still have felt that Modus was justified. Such was the gap between an Immortal such as Modus and Will."This is indeed a difficult question, thus in order to solve that problem the system was created.
