"When we get in there," Levi said, "allow me to do all the talking, and please try to not show any signs of fear. Betty thrives on that. She will wear you out till you become weak."

"Betty?" Jake asked. "Like a woman."

"She may look like a woman but she is far from being that." Levi ended the conversation and walked away from him.

The was something different about this clubhouse. The lights weren't as bright, the crowd was not as wild and the bouncers appeared meaner. Chills ran down Jake's spine as they walked into the club. A persistent ringing grew in his head, and he shot his eye severally to get rid of it but to no avail. No one else noticed the distress that Jake was in. No one except Maverick who turned a blind eye to it. For all he cared, the man could fall down and die.
