"... Who are you?" Andrew warily asked the mysterious white-haired person who appeared to have saved them from the infected creature.
He had fired his shotgun the moment he appeared with his arms raised. He refused to believe someone killing an infected with a single hit, and with their bodies no less, was a normal human. He was even more convinced of this theory when he appeared completely fine and snatches his shotgun before he could react."My name is Philip, and don't worry, I don't intend to hurt you." The person, Philip said with a reassuring smile, though Andrew didn't buy it for a second. He was already reaching for the combat knife strapped on his waist."I can fully understand your apprehension. After all, what I did should be impossible. I still have trouble believing it myself." Philip said and muttered the last part to himself."So why did you save us?" Andrew asked carefully. He doubted his combat knife would be any good considering Philip had ignored a shotgun blast to the face, but there was no way he’d let this man hurt him or his sister even if it was futile."Out of the goodness of my heart." Philip shrugged, and then his expression became strange."What, happened?" he asked and Andrew's eyes knit in confusion."What do you mean?" Andrew also asked."To the city. It was perfectly fine before I lost consciousness. So what happened?" Philip sounded genuinely distressed, but Andrew's guard raised even more. How in the world was this person unaware of what happened to the city?"You have to be joking." Andrew said with obvious disbelief. However, Philip shook his head."I know how unbelievable it sounds but it's the truth. I've been unconscious and I want to know for how long. One moment everything was okay, and now the city is like this." Philip gestured everywhere.Andrew looked at Philip hard, but from start to finish, his face hadn't changed and his voice hadn't wavered. He seemed to be telling the truth."Fine." He sighed and let go of his knife."It was about the third of last month. A large number of infected suddenly appeared. Everyone in the city was taken by surprise, and because of that, the situation deteriorated before the military could intervene. And by the time they did, it had already reached the point of no return." Hearing this, Philip frowned. The third of last month. That appeared to be the day he got infected!"I see." He said simply."Wait, you said that you were unconscious. Does that mean you were unconscious for a whole month?" Andrew's sister, Dina suddenly spoke up.He wanted to tell her to be quiet, but he too was curious."... It would seem so." Philip answered with furrowed brows. At that moment, his head suddenly snapped up."Ah, crap. Seems like your shot from earlier made too much noise. We have to leave." Immediately Philip said that, and Andrew and Dina's faces paled. This is what they had been trying to avoid."Wait, how do you-" Dina started to ask."No time to explain, we need to leave, Now!" Philip's face was dead serious. The siblings briefly glanced at each other before running out of the store. The two followed Philip who appeared to be jogging, however, he outpaced the two of them by at least five steps. They just barely managed to keep up and they soon left the area. They went into an alleyway and Philip cocked his head as if he were listening to something before blowing out a sigh."Okay, we're good for the time being." Hearing this, Dina finally couldn't help but ask."How did you know infected were coming." Philip looked at her with a small smile."Well, my hearing appears to have been enhanced as well." Andrew frowned."Enhanced?" When he said this, a helpless look appeared on Philip's face."Okay, don't freak out, but." A wry smile appeared on his face."I may or may not be infected." The instant he said that Andrew's eyes widened as he pulled Dina to his back and removed his combat knife."What are you trying to do!?" He demanded and Philip shook his head."I'm not trying to do anything. I'm still not completely sure of the whole situation myself. I think I'm infected because I got scratched by a cat before I lost consciousness. When I woke up, it was a month in the future and my hair and eyes changed. My body also became stronger along with my five senses, and my speed also received the biggest increase. I honestly don't know why this happened and I'm still trying to figure it out." Philip said in a pleading tone."Fine. Maybe you're telling the truth. But if you really are infected, how are we sure you won't suddenly turn violent and try to kill us? And even if you don't, how careful are you to not accidentally infect one of us!?" Andrew asked."Two very good points. And I honestly have no answer to them. For all I know this could be some sort of fantasy an infected is put in while my actual body could be ripping someone apart right now. Too many uncertainties and I hate it. But there's nothing I can do about it except move forward and try to find answers." Philip said sounding and looking frustrated.A small part of Andrew felt pity for the guy, but the bigger part still wanted them to split. Before he could say it though, Dina suddenly tugged at his shirt."I think we should let him stay with us." Andrew's eyes bugged out when he heard his sister."Are you out of your mind?! He's a walking time bomb for crying out loud!" He whispered."You don't know that. Besides, he's saved us twice so far. And you tried to kill him once. I think we should give him a chance." She said calmly and Andrew hesitated."... You're sure? You trust him?" She shook her head at this."I'm not sure of anything. And I also don't trust him. But while he could spell doom for us, he could also be our saving grace. It's a huge gamble but it's one I'm willing to take." Dina looked at him with her big green eyes and Andrew gritted his teeth as he had an internal battle. Then he sighed. He turned to face Philip who had been waiting patiently and said."Fine. You can join us." But then his gaze immediately became sharp."But if you show the slightest sign of wanting to hurt me or my sister, I'll carve your heart out." Despite the threat, Philip appeared elated."No problem. By the way, I didn't catch your names." Philip said and Andrew debated telling him. Well, might as well get to know his new ally."My name is Andrew Hughes. If you haven't already noticed, this is my sister. Dina Hughes." Philip nodded."Philip Drew. A pleasure to meet you." Philip said and held Andrew's shotgun to him.Andrew eyes the weapon, then Philip. Then he nodded and grabbed it.Philip analyzed the information and couldn't help but feel both a sense of luck and also incredibly lucky. He'd been unconscious for a whole month due to whatever the infection did to him. On one hand, he felt that he'd lost some good time to do something useful. But on the other hand, there was no guarantee that he'd have been able to survive the virus outbreak in the city.He sighed inwardly. No use thinking about it now.He glanced at his two new, albeit distrustful companions walking by his side. From what they told him, Andrew was a former soldier which was why he had a shotgun, and his sister Dina was a substitute teacher. An interesting pair.Anyway, due to his quick thinking, Andrew was able to survive with him and his sister when the outbreak happened, and according to them, they were heading towards a camp filled with survivors. When Philip asked how they knew it was there, Andrew told him that the leader had sent out a broadcast when the outbreak happened.Philip was a lit
Philip lightly slapped his cheeks.‘I can do this. I can do this’ Even though the logical part of his brain was screaming at him he couldn't do this, he pushed the doubt in his mind.‘Worst case scenario, I'll just run away. That thing is big and I don't want to get hit by it, but it probably swings like a crane’ He let his analytical part take over and his fear began to subside.Thankfully, another thing his ability let him do was think incredibly fast as well, so he could think of a plan without worrying about wasting time.‘The biggest problem is that I don't have a weapon. Most likely, I'll have to gather up a bunch of speed and run into it. But, can my body handle that’ The thought worried him, but he shook his head.‘We'll cross that bridge when we get there. Alright, no more sitting around.’ He let out a breath, steeled himself, and walked into the open. The moment he walked out, the giant infected looked at him with its big angry eyes, and for a moment, Philip felt like a smal
The rest of the night went by without incident, so the group set out early in the morning."We'll forget about heading to the base today, we need to spend the day finding food." Andrew suddenly said."Why?" Dina asked and Andrew pointed at Philip."His speed is our biggest advantage right now, and we need him to be at peak strength if we want to maintain that advantage. To do that, we need to get him food." Philip's eyes widened when he heard this."You're holding yourself aren't you? You probably expended a lot of energy fighting the infected from last night, and I doubt those canned meals were enough to sate you. Am I wrong?" Andrew said and Philip pursed his lips.Andrew was spot on. Right now, he was actually super hungry and the canned food he'd eaten the night before was barely enough to keep him on his feet."Yeah, you're right." Philip conceded and Andrew nodded. He gestured them over to a car and dug out a mp from his backpack before laying it out."The closest mall is about
The food court was very much scattered. Chairs were broken, tables overturned, and an unsettling amount of dried blood. The group quickly went over and got to the counter.Andrew told Philip and Dina to stay before jumping over the counter and moving out of sight into the kitchen, towards the Fridge Philip assumed. He and Dina ducked and waited. It was at this time Philip finally got a good look at the mostly silent girl. She was very good looking. She had a slight tan, constantly running from monsters in the sun did that to you. She had large green eyes and long blonde hair, like her brother, though his was obviously short. Her body was also proportioned very nicely. Philip judged that if she was a teacher as she said then she was probably very popular among the male students. It was then that she turned to look at him and they both stared at each other. Philip caught the same look of wariness which Andrew usually looked at him with.He smiled at her and she looked away. Philip shook
“BELOW YOU!” Were the last words Andrew heard Phillip scream before he got stabbed through his chest. His eyes widened in shock as he saw the blood drip through Phillips's shirt. Quickly he retreated and continued to avoid their attacks but he knew Phillip was spent.*SHRIEK* Quickly, he was brought back to his senses by the scream of the spider-like infected that Phillip had tried to warn them about. He quickly reached for the machete that he had carried earlier and swung it into the neck of the grotesque-looking monster. The sound of metal hitting bone cut through the commotion that was going on all around them. Disgusting blood and liquids splashed all over him.But still, it wasn’t enough damage as the monster was still squirming and flailing its numerous hands everywhere. “Dina, stab it!” Andrew yelled.Dina hesitated for a moment but soon enough she brought out her dagger and with anxiety, stabbed the creature under its head, right through the jugular.More blood poured out an
Andrew and Dina carefully moved Phillip to a bench that was still intact in the hall of the mall. Dina went and came back with some water in a bowl from a nearby fountain and tore a piece of her flannel shirt to use as a rag.She carefully wiped the blood and fluids that he had racked up on his body after his bout with the infected. And for a split second, she caught herself looking closer at the features of Phillips's face. His facial structure was well-defined, his silver hair made him seem like a character out of a fantasy novel. Well, he had randomly appeared and saved her and her brother when they were in danger, sort of like a prince. Those feelings, however, were unwarranted considering the current situation. The world was falling apart, and they didn’t even know if they would survive till next week. This infatuation with Phillip had to be limited, for everybody’s good. When she had cleaned him up to a decent extent she tilted his head up and gave him some water before gently p
CHAPTER 11Where am I? That was the first thought Philip had when he woke up. From the bumping sensation he kept feeling, he knew that he was in some sort of vehicle. He also remembered some guy coming to ‘save’ them before he lost consciousness, so he was very concerned. However, he made no effort to open his eyes or stir. Because he could hear two people having a conversation next to him.“This guy seems pretty strong.” The first one said.“Even if he’s a special grade, it’s very impressive that he was able to hold down that many infected on his own.” He continued to say.“That’s right, and with the way he was looking, he barely had any energy left. Boss will be very happy with us when we get back.” The second said with a hint of excitement.Boss? Special grade? Philip saved these two thoughts in his mind and kept listening.“By the way, what do you think sir Kaiser is going to do about those two?” The first one asked and Philip restrained opening his eyes. They must be talking abou
Chapter 12A group of the SGO guys were laughing like maniacs, they had surrounded a bunch of people in ragged clothing, survivors, were screaming. As for why they were screaming, well, one of the SGO guys was using a knife to slowly carve off flesh from one of the survivors who was wailing like a pig about to be slaughtered. At that juncture, one of the survivors tried to run, however, an SGO suddenly stepped in front of him and held him by the neck. And before the poor guy could struggle, his neck was snapped.Andrew slowly retreated and took a deep, but silent breath to calm himself down. He couldn’t let his emotions get the best of him, especially now. With resolve in his eyes, he marched back to the camp.Philip took a moment to digest the information that was given to him. From what the guy said, there was a faction called the New World, and it was filled with people like him, called ‘Special Grade Infected’. Individuals who the G-virus and their genetic makeup managed to perfec
Xander was in a bind, the cabin they had struggled so much to get to was right in front of them but instead of relief, he felt tension. The people there numbered about ten or so, it wouldn’t be wise to confront them head-on.Furthermore, he did not want to approach them either. After what he had experienced with Mark and Adrian, he did not want to give anybody the benefit of the doubt. He could still remember the look on his face when he tried to choke the life out of him. He had gotten wiser in the last twenty-four hours believe it or not.He concluded that the best he could do was simply try to get enough cans of food before the others entered into the cabin. Funnily enough, they seemeddisagreeing. An older man with patches of grey hair seemed to be telling them not to forcefully enter, while a slightly younger man, probably middle-aged was raging for them to break the door down. This however was not a time for him to gawk and stare. It was a time for him to act! “Hailey, stay here
"Life can be annoying honestly," Andrew said as he looked through the window at the harsh downpour of the rain. When the group thought that they could move for a few more hours until sunset, it suddenly began to rain heavily. Enough to force them to seek shelter.Hence, they quickly found a gas station and decided to hunker down there. On the bright side though, there were some old comics they could use to entertain the kids. And a toilet, so they didn't have to ease themselves in the open as they had been doing since."With how hard the rain is falling, we might be leaving here by noon tomorrow. Just our luck." Andrew lamented. But who could blame him? They were trying so hard to cut their travel time and arrive at the settlement, and yet they just kept facing setback after setback."Fretting over it won't change anything. It's unfortunate but that's just how it is. The only thing we can do now is take it the best we can and keep moving." Philip said, however, Andrew raised a brow.W
“Do not even Think about stopping until I say so!” Andrew barked at the troops who were visibly tired while running laps.Their bodies seemed to ache and their chests heaved with each breath they took in. Andrew watched their progress with a whistle around his neck and arms folded across his chest.Ever since he became Captain, he had completely turned around the training regime of the force. They were now more effective and able to handle more difficult situations, thanks to Andrew’s guidance. He continued to watch over their progress when he heard the sound of a vehicle drive onto the training ground. He turned around and saw one of Greysons aides alight from the vehicle and walk up to him.“Captain Andrew, I have been instructed to take you to Mr Greyson immediately. He said there is something you must need to know.” She said.Andrew looked at the troops who were running behind him, of course they prayed internally that he would leave so that they could get a chance to rest after
In the blink of an eye Phillip was already at the front lines where the soldiers were assembling themselves and putting on their gear. They were spooked when he suddenly appeared out of seemingly thin air. “Who’s in command here?” Phillip asked the slightly frightened group in front of him.“Well based on what’s just happened wouldn’t that be you sir?” A voice said sarcastically from behind, generating a slight chuckle from all the members behind him.He was an average heighted man with well built muscles, a full face beard and ebony black skin and a shiny bald head to top it off.Phillip asked that question to know the hierarchy of the group and who’s responsible for what. “That’s very funny, however I don’t know if you are all aware but that alarm means there’s a swarm of infected rushing towards this base, correct?” He asked while turning his gaze to all of them who were staring at him.“Yes we know, we also know we don’t need one of those freaks to tell us how to do a job we’ve b
Phillip and Andrew leave the room in silence, walking side by side. They were still trying to comprehend what they had just heard.Even Phillip who was the first to be informed still had a hard time believing it. Turning people into infected for personal gains was something he never thought he would discover. However that was the reality, and all they could do was stop it from happening. “When do you want us to leave?” Andrew asked, bringing Phillip back to reality.“I was thinking tomorrow, any later than that and it would be unnecessary. We do not exactly have that much time to waste, especially considering we do not even know if the boy is still wandering the streets by himself.” Phillip responded.“What about Dina? Has she been informed about what is going on?” Andrew asked once again.Phillip shook his head, they had not mentioned anything to her yet as he did not see it as that important. But now that he thought about it, he would need her help since they were dealing with a chi
In the blink of an eye, a whole week had passed. The group was getting more and more accustomed to their new residence and life in the settlement. It was weird since they were so used to finding an infected at least once or twice in a day, so returning back to a somewhat normal life was a little foreign. However, they did still adapt to their new lifestyle quickly. So when they were confident, they all finally decided to look for something to do.Also, Frank hadn't stopped collecting blood from Philip, and according to the bags under his eyes and the excited expression he had on his face each time he invited Philip to his lab, Philip judged that his blood was indeed helping. He had tried to watch Frank work but gave up almost immediately as he failed to understand anything he was doing. On the other hand, Andrew and Dina had been socializing with the other survivors in the settlement. Most of them were pretty hospitable and had no problem in getting acquainted with the duo. There was
CHAPTER 30Phillip and his crew walked closely together as they passed through the makeshift wooden gates which led them into the settlement. They tried to observe as much as they could while passing through, especially exits should they need to escape from the place for any reason. The walls were made from timber and reinforced by rows of lamp posts, despite the fact that the infection spread less than two months ago the measures they had taken to protect themselves were very impressive. And unlike his earlier assumptions, the walls actually spanned about 3 kilometers across all four sides of the settlement. Every 50 meters or so there was a watch tower with people with guns at the top.Upon closer inspection, some parts of the walls were covered in graffiti. Names of departed, days In captivity and other random yet strange things were painted on the walls.“Follow me.” Alice said as she turned and passed through what was formerly a commercial district but had now become a makeshift
“The primaries aren’t looking too good Mr Greyson.” His secretary said after making his presentation on the projector in Greysons office. He was holding some documents and graphs from the last primaries that had just been held concerning his rerun election. He was pursuing a second term in office as the next round of elections was coming up.“Just what could the problem be Chris? I kept all the promises I made during my campaigns, so just why are the polls so negative.” Greyson said as he leaned back in his chair and put his palms on his face.Chris could only look at his boss with a bit of sympathy. Ever since the introduction of the G-Virus which still couldn’t be explained, his competitors had begun to take advantage of the situation. Making promises such as protecting those who voted for them from the virus.Although it was a deplorable tactic, it seemed to be working. Greysons main competitor, Judas Layton was the embodiment of power hungry. He had always been guilty of making f
Frank opened the door and at the entrance stood two guards with masks standing at attention. They both saluted when they saw Frankwho acknowledged them before returning to their natural positions.“This was please.” Frank said as he gestured in front of him and took charge. As they walked, Phillip couldn’t help but notice the other scientists that occupied the makeshift laboratory. The building seemed to be an old building which they had converted quite nicely into a suitable laboratory. There were at least a dozen people in there with their own secluded workspaces and tables set up with various gadgets and equipment.Lights flashed, equipment beeped and notes were taken as they studied the various tasks that were in front of them. He caught a glimpse of some fascinated faces when he was making his way past some of their desks. He could see their curiosity visible written across their faces as he walked by. ‘What a specimen!’ Some of their faces screamed as they walked further into th
