Chapter 9 : Fortune

“BELOW YOU!” Were the last words Andrew heard Phillip scream before he got stabbed through his chest.

His eyes widened in shock as he saw the blood drip through Phillips's shirt. Quickly he retreated and continued to avoid their attacks but he knew Phillip was spent.

*SHRIEK*

Quickly, he was brought back to his senses by the scream of the spider-like infected that Phillip had tried to warn them about.

He quickly reached for the machete that he had carried earlier and swung it into the neck of the grotesque-looking monster.

The sound of metal hitting bone cut through the commotion that was going on all around them. Disgusting blood and liquids splashed all over him.

But still, it wasn’t enough damage as the monster was still squirming and flailing its numerous hands everywhere. “Dina, stab it!” Andrew yelled.

Dina hesitated for a moment but soon enough she brought out her dagger and with anxiety, stabbed the creature under its head, right through the jugular.

More blood poured out and after some twitching, it finally collapsed on the ground. It was dead.

“We have to do something!” Dina’s voice cut through the air, as she pointed towards a surrounded Phillip. He was spent. He had used the last of his energy to put enough distance between himself and the oncoming infected.

Andrew was in a bind, he knew that they had to help Phillip, but they weren’t like him. There were at least a dozen infected and there were only two of them.

They didn’t have powers like him, only a shotgun with limited ammo and a pair of knives. The sound of Phillips's screams filled the air once more as he got stabbed by another infected.

“We have to do something! We can’t just let him die!” Dina screamed once again, putting her face on Andrew's shoulder. She couldn’t bear to see anymore.

Andrew gripped the shotgun in his hands. He couldn’t just leave Phillip, not after everything he had done for them.

“Dina, let’s go. We have to help him.” Andrew said with resolve in his eyes. Dina nodded and they both began making their way down the stairs.

Andrew sat on the floor, with no ounce of energy in his body. All he could hope was the siblings were okay.

“What a crappy way to go” he said to himself as he saw the inhuman faces creeping closer to him. An infected with a comically disproportionate arm reached out towards him and he simply closed his eyes.

He began to have rogue thoughts that he hadn’t bothered about when he first woke up. What about Valerie and the jerk she cheated on him with?

What about his family and friends? Was there actually a safe haven or was everyone truly wiped out?

It didn’t matter anyway, any second he wouldn’t be head to worry about it. Suddenly he was woken up from his daydream by a soft hand resting on his shoulders.

He turned around to see familiar green eyes looking at him. “Dina? What are you doing back here!?” He asked in a panic.

“We couldn’t just leave you to die!” Said a voice from in front of him. It was Andrew! He was using the last of the shotgun ammo to fight against the infected.

It wasn’t working, only distracting them for the time being, and slowly they were all backed up into a corner.

“What are you guys doing here? Why did you come back?” Phillip asked weakly.

“To save you. We couldn’t leave after everything you had done for us!” Dina spoke, which was unusual for her.

“What was the point of the distraction if we all end up dying!” Phillip said in frustration.

“Hey! Fight if you can, shut up if you can’t.” Andrew said as he kept shooting what little ammunition he had left.

*CLICK CLICK CLICK*

We’re soon the only sounds that filled the air as they were out of ammo. Andrew simply backed up and kept his sister behind him.

Nobody exchanged a word, they all just prepared for the worst.

*BANG BANG BANG*

As shots ringed through the air black blood and brain particles flew through the air. Someone was shooting at the infected surrounding them, but who?

Within seconds, the dozens of infected that had once surrounded them had reduced to one. It was crawling and squirming on the ground, its legs had been shot off.

Slowly, a man wearing a black uniform with a scar across his eye slowly walked behind the creature and grabbed it by its deformed and spiked neck.

“You disgust me!” He said with a scowl.

And to the surprise of the three crushes the creature's neck with his bare hands, its lifeless body crumbling down as if it wasn’t a threat a few minutes ago.

“Search the area for any more of the infected. Then report back here.” He said once more.

“Yes sir!” A group of voices said in unison.

Andrew, Phillip and Dina were too focused on the man In front of them for them to notice the troops spread out around the area.

“Andrew, who are these people?” Dina asked nervously.

Andrew thought to himself, could they be from the safe haven they had heard about? However, after looking at them and their gear, he wasn’t sure.

“Excuse me, sir, what’s going on here? Who are you?” Andrew finally found the courage to ask.

“Kaiser Braun, head of the recon unit of the SGO.” the man said with a less-than-friendly look on his face.

“And who might you bunch be?” He asked, shifting his gaze to Phillip who was now sitting on the floor, trying to cover his wounds.

Thanks to his super speed, his wounds were healing at an unprecedented pace, but he had lost a lot of blood.

He was going in and out of consciousness, trying to stay awake as he didn’t feel comfortable with Kaiser’s presence. Something didn’t sit right with him whenever he looked at him.

“My name is Andrew Hughes, and this is my sister Dina, and that’s our companion Phillip. We’ve been working together for a few days now.” Andrew said, trying to make sure he didn’t say more than necessary.

Kaiser had already noticed Phillips's white hair and silver eyes, instinctively he could tell that he wasn’t normal. Secondly, his wounds were healing right in front of his eyes.

He didn’t need to think twice to know that Phillip was a special grade like him. He needed to recruit him to become part of the SGO.

“Your friend over there doesn’t seem to be doing too good.” Kaiser said while gesturing towards Phillip.

“Ah… all he needs is food and rest and he’ll be good to go. We haven’t eaten anything for days.” Dina said worriedly.

Kaiser made a signal with his left hand and one of the subordinates standing behind him walked up to him and opened a bag filled with canned food and dried fruits.

He grabbed the bag and threw it at the feet of Andrew. “Eat, and give some to your friend too.” He said.

At this point, Phillip was very close to losing consciousness. The last sight he could see was Dina hurriedly opening a can of beans and trying to feed him a spoon.

But it was too late, he had used too much energy and lost too much blood while fighting the infected. He had overexerted himself and soon everything faded away into black.
